Welcome back to Wayward Stories!   Tonight we are, yet again, going to embrace that Nomad Spirit, Sedentary Life energy we harnessed a couple of years back when school had me unable to go pretty much anywhere.   As we talked about in the last episode, I've recently been working on some itineraries for road trips from our national historic site that would trace the historic trails set by some of the earliest explorers. So tonight, we're going to explore in the footsteps of one Edward Fitzgerald Beale, the man who “built” the first transcontinental wagon road across the U.S.   I promise tonight's show won't bore you to tears with my historic predilections, because ol' Eddie Beale wasn't just blazing our nation's first transcontinental highway for horses and buggies…he was building what we become a road trip classic bucket-lister…Route 66. Today we explore three unusual stories from Virginia folklore: the ghost legend associated with Sarah Shelton Henry, the mystery of the Beale ciphers, and the modern tale of a werewolf-like creature in Henrico County. Along the way, we will separate the documented history from the legends that grew around it. Virginia was one of the thirteen colonies that declared independence from Britain, but its human story reaches back much farther. Archaeological evidence shows that people have lived in what is now Virginia for at least sixteen thousand years. Early communities were mobile hunters, fishers, and gatherers. Over thousands of years, many became more settled. During the Late Woodland period, farming, towns, and far-reaching trade networks became increasingly important. By the early 1600s, Virginia's Indigenous peoples spoke languages belonging to three broad families: Algonquian, Iroquoian, and Siouan. In Tidewater Virginia, Wahunsenacawh—known to the English by his title, Powhatan—inherited authority over six groups. Through diplomacy and force, he expanded that alliance to include between twenty-eight and thirty-two tribes and smaller chiefdoms. This alliance did not include every Native nation in Virginia, and its population numbered in the tens of thousands. European contact also began earlier than the original article suggested. Spanish Jesuits attempted to establish a mission in the Chesapeake region in 1570. Jamestown, founded in 1607, became the first permanent English settlement. Relationships between the English and Virginia's Native peoples included trade and diplomacy, but also warfare, dispossession, and forced displacement. Virginia's Native nations survived those events and remain part of the Commonwealth today. This long and complicated history provides the setting for some of Virginia's most enduring folklore... You were probably taught to read Daniel like a codebook with beasts to identify, timelines to chart, and an Antichrist to spot. Dr. Jim Hamilton thinks the church has been missing the point, and he makes a compelling case that the key to Daniel's strangest visions is hiding in the stories of chapters 1–6.ABOUT THE EPISODE:Dr. Jim Hamilton, professor of biblical theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and senior pastor of Kenwood Baptist Church, joins Joshua Lewis to walk through his book With the Clouds of Heaven: The Book of Daniel in Biblical Theology. His central claim: Daniel wrote real history and real prophecy, and the apocalyptic visions of chapters 7–12 aren't a departure from the narratives of chapters 1–6, but rather a projection of them. Look to the patterns: Nebuchadnezzar attacks God's people, plunders the temple, and tries to indoctrinate the faithful in Daniel 1, and that same pattern gets pressed onto the end times, again and again, until it culminates in resurrection of the dead (Daniel 12:2). Dr. Hamilton makes the case that Daniel interpreted his own God-given visions through a mind saturated with earlier Scripture, describing Nebuchadnezzar's shattered statue in the language of Psalm 1 and Psalm 2. However, the sparks fly on the fourth man in the fiery furnace. Dr. Hamilton argues it was an angel, not the pre-incarnate Christ, and Joshua isn't ready to concede. If a book promises to give you the heart of God while quietly replacing His words with someone else's, that's not a translation. It's a trap. And the trap has a paper trail.ABOUT THIS EPISODE:The Passion Translation has been endorsed by some of the most influential voices in the charismatic world. Bill Johnson called it the best thing to happen to Bible translation in his lifetime. It's been sold in Bethel's bookstore, read in prayer rooms, and handed to new believers across the movement.David Fish and JonMark Baker of the Minor Prophets Podcast spent weeks comparing the Passion Translation, line by line, against its claimed sources. What they found isn't a matter of interpretation. It's documented.Where Brian Simmons departs from the Greek text, and claims an "Aramaic" source, the renderings don't match the Peshitta, the actual Syriac New Testament. They match the Mirror Bible, The Message, and other fringe paraphrases. Fish found over 300 instances in Paul's epistles alone. Simmons also claimed co-translator credentials on a Kuna New Testament. Ethnos 360, the mission that ran the project, says he was NEVER a Bible translator.
