“It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it works, and you don't know if it works unless you experiment with it.  In order to get good at everything you got to break it all up and pull it apart.  Find the common thread, that's how the styles will merge.”  -- Erik PaulsonMy guest on this episode is Erik Paulson who is an Encyclopedia of Martial Arts and the first American to win the World Light Heavyweight Shooto Championship in Japan.  He was trained by legendary instructors like Guro Dan Inosanto, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Gene Lebell, Yori Nakamura, Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie, Tim Tackett, Ajarn Chai, and Billy Robinson.  He is a multi-style Black Belt and master instructor of Jeet Kune Do, Kick Boxing, Savate, Shoot Fighting, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, and a 6'th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  He is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling and STX Kickboxing.  He runs the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, where he has trained MMA Fighters like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Cub Swanson, Sean Sherk, James Wilks, and Brock Lesnar. This episode is all about connection and seeking the common thread in all martial arts.  My key takeaway is that martial arts is a creative act.  We must be humble and open so that we can learn and absorb from all sources.  What we learn must be tested so that we know that we can make it work, and the only way to test it is to experiment with it.  Martial Arts is a creative process, of transforming knowledge, wisdom, to understanding.  Erik Paulson is a true genius of the game, his understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of martial arts sets him apart and allows him to mentor and guide his students toward excellence.  This is a special episode, filled with insight and old-school stories of Jeet Kune Do and the development of MMA from someone who has first-hand knowledge and experience.  Tune in for an unforgettable episode.

Old Movies For Young Stoners

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2022 70:45

In our terrific tenth episode, we delve into the hallucinogenic possibilities of the most surreal movie genre of them all -- the musical! And as strange as the musical is, it was the most normie form of entertainment for a good chunk of the 20th Century, and is still capable of giving us the utter batshit weirdness of CATS from time to time. For our first film, we go back to the height of MGM and the technicolor musical for ON THE TOWN from 1949 where Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin are a trio of horny sailors looking for love and destroying brontosaurus fossils while on 24-hour leave in New York City. Along the way, they meet Ann Miller as a beautiful woman scientist who's smitten with Munshin because he looks like a neanderthal; Betty Garrett as an aggressively amorous cabbie with a hankering for Frank; and Very-Ellen as "Miss Turnstiles," the object of Kelly's affections and the subject of the movie's dreamlike dance sequences. With satire that still lands and groundbreaking location cinematography, this one was a big hit with young stoners Cory & Philena. In our second feature, British director Ken Russell and Roger Daltry of The Who, fresh off their success in TOMMY, get even weirder with the rock opera for LISZTOMANIA (1975), an anachronism-heavy take on the life of Hungarian composer (1811-1886), a long-haired heartthrob who sent young women into fits of hysteria. Russell's obsessions with sex, paganism and Third Reich iconography are all on display here as this movie is chock full o' towering dicks, bare breasts and Nazi vampires. Plus we have the lead singer of The Who being enveloped by a mammoth vagina, Ringo Starr as the Pope, AND Nell Campbell from Rocky Horror Picture Show completing her mission to be in the weirdest musicals of 1975. And Rick Wakeman converted the music of Liszt into its prog rock synth score and plays Thor in a way you'll never see the thunder god portrayed in the MCU. Weed recs are definitely essential for this one. Both movies are currently streaming on HBOMax. I just checked and they're still there but watch 'em while you can before HBO is nothing but Ghost Adventures spinoffs. Sorry for some of the audio hiccups here. Weed recommendations are in the episode along with Bob Calhoun's special tribute to his friend "Judo" Gene LeBell, the legendary martial artist, pro wrestler and Hollywood stuntman. This time a pair of cops need to find a new line of work and of course their fallback is professional wrestling. Join us and enjoy that one guy from that thing you watched that one time and his partner look to be the best BAD GUYS in professional wrestling. Also... Sgt. Slaughter is definitely in this film. He's one absolutely one of the leads. We promise. But while you wait for Sarge, you can be entertained by the legend Gene LeBell and his on-screen significant other Ruth Buzzi (ask your grandparents).

This week on the ECC, Cam and Trav talk about the death of wrestling/martial arts legend, Gene LeBell at age 89. What he bought to a movie set, who he beat up, and the Tarantino movie loosely based on him. This week in TV saw the return of Karrion Kross, this time with Scarlett. Why Travis thinks pushing Kross as the number two heel will not go well. Ciampa shines in his loss to Bobby Lashley. After a couple of weeks speculating who Triple H might bring back, Travis asks who will be the first talent released from their contract under Triple H? Considering how he was treated on Monday's Raw, Cameron believes Ezekiel might be that person. Emails, live calls and much more. Gene Lebell was a Judo fighter. I am going to include this because Lebell was an AAU Judo Champion and represented Judo in this contest. However, he had hundreds (or even thousands) of matches as a Pro Wrestler. This match was against Milo Savage, a top-rated journeyman in the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight divisions. Lebell was the brother of promoter Mike Lebell and the son of Aileen Eaton (Promoter). She also was the first woman to ever be inducted into the IBHOF (in 2002). Milo Savage later became a boxing judge and settled in the Trenton, New Jersey, area........ ABOUT RINGSIDE WITH READING: BOXING HISTORY FROM YESTERYEAR I would like to announce The Podcast Show Ringside With Reading: Boxing History From Yesteryear brought to you by The Sports History Network. I am your host Frank Reading I am a middle-aged former boxing mega-fan from the 1980s-1990s. I have no allegiance or affiliation with any Boxing Organization Alliance or Federation. I have a background in research and public speaking as well as boxing training and coaching. I hope you will enjoy the factual information provided on this program.  My goal is to educated and inform the listener on the History of "The Sweet Science" It will be available on The Sports History Network app and will air bi-weekly on Saturday. HOST: FRANK READING I am a researcher, public speaker, historian, Boxing History buff, a mega-fan from yesteryear amateur boxing, co-trainer, and worked with 2 golden gloves champions amongst several others. I became interested in boxing in the early to mid-1980s and was fascinated with the one-on-one competition. I trained for a little sparred several times but I was not that good and realized it. I took my interest in other aspects of the sport. Watching and analyzing fight moves styles and recording fights on television back in the days when every home had VCRs. I am a middle-aged man now and do not follow the sport closely anymore but during a time I was a super mega-fan and did not follow anything closely but The Sweet Science. I hope an interest will be brought to and appreciated through my contribution. I am a high school graduate who barely got through because I was not interested in the subject matter being taught. I work in the Private Contract Security field for over 30 years. I have been happily married for 16 years and have 2 stepdaughters. My wife's name is Erika and the daughters are Andrea and Elena.

Meet Star Trek's Original Gorn, Stuntman Bobby Clark! When people think of Star Trek aliens that don't look human, chances are the first thought that pops into their head is the Gorn. This verdant bruiser left an indelible mark on Trekkies since he debuted and remains a signature part of the series to this day. In this episode of Trek Untold, we chat with Bobby Clark, a stunt performer who performed four times in the original Star Trek, along with a list of other roles across many Westerns, crime dramas, and plenty of other TV shows & films during his very active career. Bobby Clark first appeared in the 1967 TOS episode "Arena," where he was the primary actor to wear the Gorn suit and fight against William Shatner's Captain Kirk. Learn how Clark got the role, what the suit was like, sparring with Shatner in arguably the most iconic fight scene in Star Trek history, and memories of his time at Vasquez Rocks.  Clark followed that up with three more appearances in TOS, "Mirror Mirror" as a guard who gets shot by Trek Untold alumni Garth Pillsbury, "Return of The Archons" as a crazed towns-person, and "The Apple" as a follower of Vaal, who tussles once again with Kirk, but this time painted as a jumbo-sized Oompa-Loompa. We chat about his many Star Trek memories, his background, and how he got into the stunt business, working with Hal Needham, Gene Lebell, Charlie Picerni, Vince Deadrick, Joseph Penvey, and others in this fascinating discussion about a time in Hollywood when stunt performers had a very different lifestyle than they do today. No Holds Barred: John Perretti on His Life and Memoir, The Origin Of A Species and Mixed Martial Arts

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with lifelong martial artist, former UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting matchmaker, TV commentator, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti. His long-awaited autobiography and memoir has recently been released. It is called The Origin Of A Species and Mixed Martial Arts. We spoke with him by phone Tuesday. This book covers so many topics and so much territory that we had to limit our discussion, which for this show was about one hour and 20 minutes long, just to subjects related to the martial arts, combat sports, and of course mixed martial arts, a term which he first coined. But John Perretti's life and interests included so many other areas, including the arts and history in general, and also how they are related to the martial arts and combat sports, that a thorough examination of all of them would be impossible in one sitting. For that you are strongly encouraged to purchase and read this book, which is a must-read, especially for those concerned with the past, present, and future of the martial arts and combat sports, their real history, and what should be kept and discarded in all of them. In particular, since so much of the media devoted to the martial arts and combat sports is controlled by various corrupt promoters, the actual role of John Perretti in them has been, to use his term, largely "redacted from MMA history". We thus put out a challenge to those in the media who are sincere about understanding and truthfully reporting on and analyzing the martial arts and combat sports to follow our lead and interview John Perretti and review his book. We discussed how his experiences as a boy were key to developing his passion for the martial arts and combat sports, how he devoted himself to finding out just what worked and what didn't in real life in them, his introduction to grappling and Gene LeBell, how he developed the basic framework and format of modern mixed martial arts in Battlecade Extreme Fighting, his one-and-done but historic grappling show called The Contenders, his trying to position MMA as a sport and not a spectacle, his exit from MMA, the role of his old gym called Madison Avenue Muscle, the health problems he has today resulting from a lifetime in the martial arts and combat sports, and much, much, much more. Although Bob Wall had no desire to become a film star, he somehow ended up appearing in some of the highest grossing martial arts films of all time. As Chuck Norris’ business partner and Bruce Lee’s training buddy and friend for over a decade, Bob – a world professional karate champion – found himself cast as one of the baddies in Lee's 1972 film, The Way of the Dragon. Bob provided a similar foil to Lee’s on-screen attacks the following year when he was cast as the treacherous villain, O’harra, in the 1973 martial arts classic, Enter the Dragon. In this candid interview, Bob Wall – now aged 78 and speaking to me from his home in California – recalls a young and charismatic Bruce Lee who ruffled feathers amongst the martial arts community and revolutionised the action film genre. Despite a few film appearances since Enter the Dragon (including Robert Clouse’s Game of Death and supporting roles in Chuck Norris films), Bob – who describes himself as a “foul-mouthed Irishman” – mostly retired from the movie business following Lee’s untimely death. But the Bob Wall story doesn’t end there. Listen as he recalls training with Gene LeBell, Mike Stone and Joe Lewis, and teaching superstars like Steve McQueen, Freddie Prinze and Elvis Presley. He is still active on the martial arts scene as the founder of World Black Belt, and through his many appearances at seminars around the world. For the latest Bob Wall information, head to bobwallworldblackbelt.com. Also on the show, I talk to the action film expert and writer Timon Singh, who drops by to talk about his new book, 'Born to Be Bad – Talking to the Greatest Villains in Action Cinema', which features interviews with some of the best big screen baddies, including Bob Wall. 'Born to Be Bad' is available now in hardback, paperback and on Kindle via Amazon.

Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Doctor Sam Beckett led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM LEAP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Beckett, prematurely stepped into the Project Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own time was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al, the Project Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Beckett could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, putting things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next leap will be the leap home... and not get murdered by Terry Funk. On the latest episode of Three Way Theater the boys devote the show to the Funker, one of the stars of Beyond the Mat (Episode #30) and a true TWT All-Star. But before diving into his appearance on Quantum Leap Jake brings us a weird gem from the late 90s with Beyond Belief: Fact of Fiction featuring Funk and fellow TWT alum Gene Lebell! [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWI57cXfVTk] Once the guys dig into the adventures of Dr. Sam Beckett JC's love of the series shines through, spoiling five years worth of story lines without regard. So if you're worried about spoilers for a show that's been off the air 24 years, hold off on listening till after you've binged this sci-fi hit. No Holds Barred Tenth Anniversary: John Perretti on MMA and Grappling

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with lifelong martial artist, former UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting matchmaker, TV commentator, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti. This is another in a series of discussions celebrating the tenth anniversary of this No Holds Barred podcast, which began in March 2006. These interviews will focus both on the legacy and issues raised over the years on this show, as well as contemporary issues and the future of the combat sports and martial arts. We spoke with John Perretti by phone Tuesday. Besides having been both a kickboxer as well as a grappler with a black belt from Gene LeBell, John Perretti was a pioneer in mixed martial arts. He devised the modern format of MMA, including the use of weight classes, rounds, and fingerless gloves, as matchmaker with Battlecade Extreme Fighting and later UFC. He even first used the term "mixed martial arts" in the 1980s, before the revival of professional MMA in the 1990s. But when UFC changed hands in 2001, he quit that organization and moved on. And he is not at all happy with what MMA has become. "I did not see this being the way it is today, before Barnum and Bailey bought it," he said, mockingly referring to Zuffa, UFC's parent company. "I did not see this fan contingent base being such an odd one, a narrow one." And he decried what he called the "new culture" in MMA today. We discussed the devolution of MMA in the U.S., why it was accurate to argue in the 1990s that MMA was indeed safer than sports like boxing and college football, and why that is no longer the case. Grappling has also always been extremely important to him, especially with his own experience of having suffered numerous concussions and some memory loss from his fighting days. In 1997, he attempted to develop a professional grappling pay-per-view event known as "The Contenders". That show, however, was a financial failure, and folded after one event. The question arises, with so many more people training and competing in many styles of grappling and wrestling these two decades later, could some type of professional grappling or real wrestling event succeed now? "I caution everyone," he said. "I caution everyone that anything is within the clutches of corruption." After referencing the many corruption scandals in sumo wrestling in Japan, he emphasized, "Anything, no matter how much you want it to be, a solid future for a concussion-less sport of pugilism, is susceptible to a circus coming into town." We discussed more on concussions and head trauma in combat sports, the techniques of grappling and striking in MMA, some of the history behind the New York State government banning MMA in 1997 and now being set to re-legalize it this year, his being written out of history, his forthcoming memoirs, and much, much more.
