Normal boy behavior is too often pathologized and drugged and medicated. When our children "act out" or "act up," it doesn't mean that they have poor behavior, a learning disability or a mental illness. It actually indicates that they are in distress and it's up to us as adults to investigate the cause of the behavior and to attempt to meet their needs.   Laurie A. Couture is a licensed mental health counselor and the author of "Instead of Medicating and Punishing" and "Nurturing and Empowering Our Sons." Today, she addresses the crisis our boys (and all of our children, really) are facing when it comes to physical and mental health. Laurie offers sound advice for supporting and nurturing our children through appropriate diet and attention. She makes specific recommendations for what foods to avoid to protect their health (like refined sugar and soy) and how to help them deal with trauma (like using protocols like EMDR, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing).   Visit Laurie's website: laurieacouture.com Join the Weston A. A FRAUDULENT DIAGNOSIS is a powerful, in-depth conversation with my guest Laurie A. Couture, a Childhood Developmental Trauma and Attachment Specialist. Laurie is a licensed mental health counselor and the author of 'Instead of Medicating and Punishing' and the best seller, 'Nurturing and Empowering Our Sons'. She is developing The Couture Protocol, an evidence-based, whole-child program of treating developmental and generational trauma in children, youths, and their families. Laurie provides consulting, presentations, training, and research reports to industries, agencies, and programs that directly serve children, youths, and families. Laurie discovered early in her professional career that our society's institutions are out of alignment with nature's intent for children's developmental and attachment needs. What concerned her most was that the institutions in which she worked--behavioral healthcare, education, social services, and juvenile justice--generally reacted to children's alarm signals with labels and behavioral/biochemical interventions that caused more developmental distress. She observed that boys especially suffered and withered in these institutions, as their needs and natural alarm signals were met with denial, hostility, or punishment. The title essay of his first book won a 2006 Pushcart Prize. His work has appeared in The New York Times and the Washington Post, among dozens of publications. He has been a guest on the Today Show, the Morning Show, CNN, BBC, and NPR's Fresh Air. He was educated at Harvard and Columbia universities, and lives in Connecticut with his family.  Bart Gullong grew up in Old Saybrook and Wethersfield, Connecticut, attending local schools before graduating from Tabor Academy in Massachusetts. He earned a degree in English from Marietta College in Ohio, and later received a master's degree in Counseling from Central Connecticut State University. In high school and college, he was a top-level rower and directly after college became a high school and college rowing coach, at Simsbury High School and then Connecticut College. He recruited future Olympians at Conn College, and in his second year as a coach, his crew finished second in the country. By age 25, he was a US Women's crew national coach, and athletes he recruited formed a nucleus of the medal-winning 1976 Olympic team.  He changed careers in his late twenties to become an entrepreneur. Moving to Long Island, he variously worked for NASA as a consultant on the Space Shuttle, developed an early video game company, and co-invented and marketed a speedometer for rowing teams.  At age 50, he met his future business partner Frank Hursey, and Gullong's career took on a new course, although his earlier experiences as an elite coach and inventor/entrepreneur fueled the next stage of his career. Working with Hursey, he brought to the attention of the military a miraculous blood clotting product, QuikClot, that Hursey had discovered two decades before. QuikClot was immediately adopted by all branches of the military but the Army and was credited with saving many lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. "How Do You Manage Escapism, Marshall?"Firstly, what is escapism? It is the tendency to seek distraction and releif from painful realities.  In codependency, escapism shows up as:1) Being hyperfocused on the realities of others, their feelings, and their lives (so you can escape your own emptiness, loneliness, or pain)2) Medicating emotional pain through food, sex, needlessness, work, productivity, and avoiding conflict3) Fantasies about finding "the one", being made complete in a relationship, or being rescued and finally loved a specific way4) Actively denying and ignoring your pain and your emptiness. Everything is "fine"5) Seeking to regulate and rescue others in hopes they'll rescue youWhat ways has escapism showed up for you? Now, what do we do to manage this? Escapism signals that you are low on resources to help you navigate pain and create more nurturing patterns in your daily life.  Specifically, you will need to:1) Learn How To Sooth Pain: Learn how to bring soothing and care to pain and to distress in the body through nervous system care and emotional processing2) Build Connections:  With support communities, play communities, friendships, and nurturing bonds3) Reconnection with Reality:  Confront your fantasies, deconstruct them, and reconnect with what is reality through soberly acknowledging to the facts of your reality and acting appropriately from that information4) Build, practice, and master well-being skills: This involves creating new, lasting skills that soothe and care for your pain, nurture your needs and wants, and foster your well-being through community, purpose, and self-loyaltyI help you make this a reality in the Heal Your Codependency Membership. Our first training series starts July 9th:  The Actually Heal Trainings.Care for and bring peace to your pain and hurts using the Curiosity-Inquiry-Care Framework.  Enrollment opens June 26th.  Get on the waitlist here: https://www.actuallyheal.com***Seeking help in healing codependency? Brooke Schnittman went from being a Middle and Elementary School Administrator, (at my alma matter Jericho high school:), to helping others understand the dynamics of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a coaching business for ADHD'ers called Coaching with Brooke (CWB).   A graduate of Penn State and NYU grad school, Brooke Schnittman worked her ass off and is still turning out great content with a large social media following.   She realized the school system needed more help and she became an ADHD coach, to realize later at the age of 35 she too had ADHD and so does the majority of her blended family. How does she address her journey? Medication? Diagnosis? Ongoing support? Medicating family members and herself  through the Adderall Shortage?!?!    She discusses her earlier experience with a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder and how she dealt with bullying through her ADHD diagnosis, by way of her auditory processing disorder.   My questions about concerns for tolerance levels and getting addicted vs the benefits....in addition to some more shared Brooke Statistics and the fact that ....   PILLS DON'T TEACH SKILLS!!!!   Esteem and Behaviors are always an important component!   Listen up as Brooke shares her stories of Coaching with Brooke!   @coachingwithbrooke on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok www.coachingwithbrooke.com   Contact Jamie https://lightswitchlearning.com/product/bridging-the-gap-between-school-and-home/ jamie@teamesteemmethod.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jamielevine8/ https://www.instagram.com/teamesteem_/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/team-esteem-llc/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jamieblevine https://www.facebook.com/TeamEsteemLLC YouTube https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCsK7ONq0Oph1AGTq9tDWHJw Websites: www.teamesteemmethod.com www.jamielevinemsed.com Resources: https://childmind.org/article/one-on-one-help-in-the-classroom/

Reverend Frederick Shaw is the Director of Public Affairs and Spokesperson for the Citizens Commission on Human Rights International (CCHR), a more than 50-year mental health industry watchdog. He's also the Executive Director of the NAACP Inglewood-South Bay Branch in California, with a long history of working with NAACP.   Rev. Shaw is a native of Compton, CA and has worked in Compton for most of his life as a fierce advocate for children and adults in Civic and Human Rights. He has advocated and stressed the importance of education, and the reduction of poverty and drug addiction. His late mother, Marcine Shaw, was a sergeant in the Women's Army Corp in 1950. For 18 years she was Senior Deputy to Los Angeles County Supervisors Kenneth Hahn and Yvonne Brathwaite-Burke and a Compton City Council member for six years and was described as a “foot soldier for human rights.”  Between 1980-1993, Rev. Shaw was a Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy from, which included organizing and implementing the Sheriff's Youth Athletic League. In 1992, he was the co-founder and President of the World Literacy Crusade, an international organization with the purpose of eradicating poverty and hopelessness in the inner cities through education. In 2005, The State of the African American Male and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation honored Rev. Shaw as one of their recipients of the MEN WHO CARE AWARD, along with actor Jaime Fox.  He received this award for his demonstrated NAACP leadership skills and dedicated persistence to eliminate the drugging of children.   For nearly three decades, Rev. Shaw has worked closely with CCHR International and is now its international spokesman while he also continues to work with NAACP.  From these positions, he has: o Helped obtain three national Resolutions, two from the NAACP and one from the National Caucus of Black State Legislators that supported children's rights not to be subjected coercive psychotropic drugs, to stop the psychotropic of foster care children and to prohibit electroshock. o He traveled to South Africa in 1997 to attend the Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC) investigating apartheid crimes where he helped CCHR present evidence to the TRC about the role of psychiatric and psychological racism in introducing and maintaining apartheid, and how Africans were allowed to die from easily treatable medical conditions when locked up in slave labor psychiatric camps during apartheid.  o In November 2016, he led a march in South Africa against African children being subjected to dangerous psychotropic drugs and protested the World Psychiatric Association congress being held in the country. o He has delivered seminars and speeches across the U.S. and is a regular guest on community radio shows and is quoted in press newswires, reaching millions. o Rev Shaw also lends his powerful voice in defense of children around the world, and continues to lead CCHR marches against the electroshocking of children. On today's episdoe we are joined by Brooke Siem. Brooke Siem was among the first generation of minors to be prescribed antidepressants. Initially diagnosed and treated in the wake of her father's sudden death, this psychiatric intervention sent a message that something was pathologically wrong with her and that the only “fix” was medication. As a teenager, she stepped into the hazy world of antidepressants just at the time when she was forming the foundation of her identity. For the following fifteen years, every situation she faced was seen through the lens of brokenness. Her recent book "May Cause Side Effects" is the gripping story of what happened when, after fifteen years and 32,760 pills, Brooke was faced with a profound choice that plunged her into a year of excruciating antidepressant withdrawal and forced her to rebuild her entire life.
