Rather than learning to write, students have been asked to perform writing simulations, artifacts that pass muster measured against surface-level checklists as part of a system rooted in assessment and standardization. They are proficient at creating imitations, but largely inexperienced with the kind of critical thinking which underpins effective writing and sound communication. This Great Conversation features John Paul Kanwit, the IU Bloomington Campus Writing Program Director, and John Warner, author of many books including “Why They Can’t Write: Killing the Five-Paragraph Essay and Other Necessities”. Writing is thinking and is about making choices consistent with the audience, purpose, and message of the piece of writing. The challenge of engaging students as thinkers starts with authentic assignments that require students to wrestle with the choices writers make.

#55: Author John Warner on Rethinking Writing Instruction and Schools

Why do so many students leave high school without the ability to write in compelling and interesting ways? According to John Warner, author of a new book titled "Why They Can't Write: Killing the Five Paragraph Essay and Other Necessities," it's because we're teaching them to write to a test, not to real life audiences. But that's only one of many problems with schools today, places in which well meaning and talented teachers are constrained by outdated expectations and a lack of appreciation, and where students are constrained by standardization, stress and much more. Warner, who is also a columnist for the Chicago Tribune as well as a blogger for Inside Higher Education, suggests some wholesale changes in the priorities and commitments we keep in schools. Among them to grant more agency to both students and teachers to do meaningful work that matters, to get rid of the scourge of grades, and to generally reduce the amount of stress that today's high schoolers are feeling in their lives. This 45-minute interview touches on a wide range of topics relevant to anyone seriously interested in rethinking the status quo of schools. Ever since the founding of the state of Israel, the country’s leaders have favored overwhelming military might over diplomatic finesse in confronting conflicts with their neighbors. Such is the argument made by veteran journalist Patrick Tyler in his new book, Fortress Israel: The Inside Story of the Military Elite Who Run the Country—and Why They Can’t Make Peace. Tyler has spent a combined 26 years reporting for the New York Times and the Washington Post, covering the U.S. State Department, the Pentagon, the intelligence community, and the Middle East. In his book, Tyler focuses on the latter, offering a fascinating account of the Israeli military establishment—its victories, defeats, mistakes, and cover-ups. Beginning with David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Dayan in the 1950s and continuing almost up to the... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
