The End of Evangelion[a] is a 1997 Japanese anime apocalyptic science fiction film written by Hideaki Anno, directed by Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki, and animated by Gainax and Production I.G. It serves as an ending to the television series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which aired from 1995 to 1996 and whose final two episodes were controversial for their atypically abstract direction. The story follows the teenagers Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu, who pilot mechas called Evangelion to defeat enemies who threaten humanity named Angels. Shinji is subjected to the Human Instrumentality Project, a process in which human souls are merged into a single divine entity. The film features the voice actors of the original series, including Megumi Ogata as Shinji, Yuko Miyamura as Asuka, and Megumi Hayashibara as Rei. Shortly before The End of Evangelion's release, Anno and Gainax released another film, Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, which summarizes the first twenty-four episodes of the series. Like Death & Rebirth, the creators conceived The End of Evangelion as a duology comprising "Episode 25: Love Is Destructive" and "Episode 26: I Need You", remakes of the last two episodes of the original television series. In 1998, the overlapping films were edited together and reissued as Revival of Evangelion. The End of Evangelion was a box-office success, grossing ¥2.47 billion. It was honoured at the Awards of the Japanese Academy, the Animation Kobe, and the 15th Golden Gloss Award. The movie also won the 1997 Animage Anime Grand Prix, and received critical acclaim for its animation, direction, editing, emotional power, and screenplay, though some reviewers criticized its oblique religious symbolism and abstraction. Since its release, the film has frequently been cited as one of the greatest animated films of all time.[2]

Is Shinji truest the “lowest of the low” for doing…. you know? Or is he going a bit too far acting out the dreams of his Jungian Shadow Self? Is Miss Misato a sicko pedo? Or are you the weird lil' freak? Let's dive in and find out in our analysis of End of Evangelion. We quantify that Human Instrumentality with a giant Rei Ayanami mom figure would be a way cooler way to go out than nuclear war. Most importantly, Josh will emphatically state his strong case for this film being Anno holding an ugly mirror up to his most ardently passionate fans. It's a pretty good one. Kendrick Lamar and Hideaki Anno have the same message for us: I made you think about it, but I am not your savior. It's not your fault. But it is your responsibility. Go outside. Make a friend. Touch grass.Anno points two big middle fingers up at all of us as we analyze End of Evangelion to wrap a bow on it and put the original series to bed. But stay subscribed to this feed as we have plans to potentially put out special episodes revisiting Evangelion, other Anno works, or semi-related media as we feel and may do a 2nd Season covering the Rebuild series eventually.Support the show: Patreon, Venmo or CashApp

What in the heck's a Lilliputian?! Revisiting western medias over reaction to censorship and religious modesty in the 90s. The early advent of people trying to turn their brains into computers. Those of you who have seen the series likely agree with Josh - “That's not what's going on here… Just hang on.” But you wouldn't be wrong for agreeing with Steph either - “But it's still coded as Pedo.” As always, if you are a full grown adult with a crush on the underage characters of this show please seek therapy and stay away from schools.K. In a pair of taut, action-packed episodes, Neon Genesis Evangelion earns its reputation as a high-stakes science fiction action show. While your hosts espouse its merits, they also take a critical look at the second Eva pilot, Rei Ayanami. She’s a fan-favorite character, but her role in the series is far from cut and dry. Joseph and Ian also unpack Evangelion’s relationship to Godzilla movies - Hideaki Anno would later direct a Godzilla film. At the same time, your hosts take a quick tour through the various failed efforts at creating an Evangelion movie in America - it’s a convoluted story that involves James Cameron, Peter Jackson’s collaborators at Studio Weta, and possibly Guillermo Del Toro, whose movie Pacific Rim bears more than a passing resemblance to these episodes of Eva. Wow we finally made it episode 100! What better way to celebrate than by discussing the anime our name comes from... Neon Genesis Evangelion! What can really be said about Eva that hasn't been said already? Who knows, but we're going to give it a shot! The tales of Shinji, Rei, and Asuka have captivated the hearts and minds of audiences for 25 years and counting, with a new film on the horizon that will hopefully be released... eventually. After reflecting on making it to 100 episodes, we give an overview of the series followed by discussing how we first got into NGE, our favorite characters, the series' major themes, and what we think audiences young and old can get out of NGE in 2020 and beyond. (Note: Evangelion is an incredibly dense topic and for that reason, we elected to limit our scope to just discussing the 1995 TV series for this episode. Podcasts on the 2 original films and the Rebuild films will follow... one day!) Thank you so much to everyone who has listened to us, attended our panels, or otherwise supported us over the years. We'll continue striving to make the best podcast we can. Here's to another 100! Special thanks to everyone who contributed to our "Congratulations" chorus, including an incredibly special cameo from Amanda Winn Lee, director of the ADV & Manga Entertainment Evangelion dubs and the original voice of Rei Ayanami!

Skip intro/synopsis @ 9:17 045: Neon Genesis Evangelion vol. 3   Chapters 13 to 19   By Yoshiyuki Sadamoto Translation by Adapted to English by Lillian Olsen, Fred Burke + Carl Gustav Horn     Topics: Is there such a thing as a story without a goal? Joseph Campbell and the monomyth. Rei Ayanami . Stoicism and “Resting Bitch Face” The action scene/Angel battle being a plot device to get Rei and Shinji closer.   Synopsis + first impression:   On his return to base, Shinji befriends Toji and Kensuke Aida, it becomes the first time that Misato sees Shinji smile. Rei doesn’t give much of a welcome to Shinji and Misato tells him that Rei never smiles and treats everyone the same. The exception is that Rei adores Shinji’s father, Gendo Ikari.   Ritsuko Akagi comments on Misato’s and Shinji’s relationship, she congratulates Misato on passing the rite of passage which is Shinji’s rebellion towards his guardian. Ritsuko was always confident that Shinji would return to Misato and pilot the Eva. Not long after this, Shinji notices that his dad has scars on the palm of his hands, which he acquired by saving Rei from a malfunctioning Eva. The Unit-00 which somehow tried to reject her. Shinji can’t help but wonder if his father would ever do the same for him.   The next day Shinji is sent on an errand to go to Rei’s home and drop off her new security pass. Shinji finds the doorbell broken and the door already unlocked. As he makes his way inside, he finds that Rei has kept broken spectacles that belong to his dad. Rei appears out of the shower. She is more concerned that Shinji is touching Gendo’s glasses then him seeing her naked. Rei is cold and reticent in her demeanour and Shinji is embarrassed through their meeting. It becomes clear to Shinji that Rei is more loyal to piloting Eva than Shinji is, but also that Rei lives a lonely life and has given it solely to Gendo Ikari.   Soon another Angel attacks the city, Shinji is almost killed by its laser and it forms a drill in order to attack the underground base, calculations are made and they have less than a day to kill the angel before it succeeds. Rei watches Shinji recover like a mother at a bedside vigil, she even notices him cry as he dreams about and calls out to his own dead mother.   When Shinji recovers, he is ordered to use a prototype positron rifle whilst Rei uses a shield in order to protect him. It becomes their first time battling together. Shinji realises that if he misses the shot, the time it takes to recharge the rifle means Rei’s shield would be destroyed before he can fire back. Shinji misses the first shot but thanks to Rei’s sacrifice and her promise to protect Shinji, they manage to fire a second time and defeat the angel. Shinji runs out to Rei’s Eva; he opens her pod door and looks into the cockpit as his dad did before him. Shinji sees that Rei is okay and begins to cry. Rei asks him why he is always sad; Shinji says he is not sad but that he’s happy she is alive and tells her that its okay to show emotion when you’re happy. For the first time we see Rei smile.   Instagram – weappreciatemanga.co.uk Twitter - @RealJamesFitton Website – Weappreciatemanga.com Email – Weappreciatemanga@gmail.com

This is it! The cultiest of cult 90's anime, the daddy of the sekai-kei genre! And maybe Elon Musks favourite anime? It kickstarted the popularity of angsty teen anime heroes. Skip synopsis talk @ 6:52   Special thanks to 'Eagle8burger' for our intro.   043: Neon Genesis Evangelion vol. 1 Chapters 1 to 6   By Yoshiyuki Sadamoto Adapted to English by Mari Morimoto, Fred Burke + Carl Gustav Horn   Topics: The Western Anime boom, the days of collecting VHS tapes and trading with friends, which Evangelion’s first American dub came to us during that time. Shinji’s “daddy issues”, sometimes you just learn that you don’t need your daddy’s approval, sadly the main character, Shinji Ikari, has a long way to go.  Rei Ayanami being possibly "albino" The concept of the “Angels” and the originality of how aliens are depicted in Neon Genesis Evangelion. The ending to chapter 6, which differs from the original anime and clues us in on things to come.   Synopsis:   In the year 2015, fifteen years after a global cataclysm known as the Second Impact, teenager Shinji Ikaritravels to Tokyo-3 at the behest of his estranged father, Gendo. While meeting with Misato Katsuragi, a woman who works for Gendo, the city is attacked by a giant creature known as an Angel. Misato takes Shinji to NERV, an organization headed by Gendo that has developed giant bio-mechanical mecha known as Evangelions. As Evangelion Unit-01's pilot, Rei Ayanami, is wounded, Gendo asks his son to take her place. Shinji decides to fight the Angel, named Sachiel, but panics when he first sees it. During the fight, Shinji makes Unit-01 furiously attack Sachiel, which self-destructs, causing minor damage to the Eva. Next day, Misato discovers that Gendo is not planning to live with Shinji. Therefore, she decides to become Shinji's legal guardian to keep him from being isolated.   Pop culture and other references: The Christian cross is used to depict a flashy death state of the defeated Angel, over the next volumes there will be many allusions and references to not only Christianity but all Abrahamic religions, and even kabbalah. Group A10 is the largest group of dopaminergic cells in the ventral midbrain tegmentum of rodents and primates. The cells are located for the most part in the ventral tegmental area, the linear nucleus and, in primates, the part of central grey of the midbrain located between the left and right oculomotor nuclear. Not to be confused with T10 which is found in the human spine.   “On the floor of the midbrain is the ventral segmental system, that neurobiologists call region A10. Cells soaked in dopamine, certain emotions are processed here: such as the thoughts of two lovers - or a parent and a child. And it is the synchronization of the threads and bundles of A10 that splice pilot and Eva together; to become one entity, to fight. In other words, the power of love drives this weapon of mass destruction.” – Yoshiyuki Sadamoto       Instagram – weappreciatemanga.co.uk Twitter - @RealJamesFitton Website – Weappreciatemanga.com Email – Weappreciatemanga@gmail.com
