The Long, Cold Dark, part 3: Far From Home, But Not Alone
In this episode we try to gain a deeper understanding of what it was like to live, fight and die on the Western Front. Through the eyes of the soldiers who were there, we venture into an abandoned German dugout on the Somme and discover how a British soldier comforted a wounded German in his final moments. This story demonstrates the compassion and spirit between enemies. We compare the impact of shellfire in built up areas, on civilians and soldiers, compared to being in the shelter of the trenches and we also discover a young pilot from Australia who is buried in Norfolk. Who was he?
In this episode, we sit down with Alex, who opens up about the heartbreak, confusion, and sheer emotional exhaustion of navigating multiple miscarriages while living halfway across the world from home. Now based in Singapore with her husband - and with zero plans to head back to the UK - Alex has had to make sense of her losses within a healthcare system that doesn't always cushion its words or soften the blows. Cultural differences meant that some of the medical conversations she faced landed with a thud: blunt, clinical, sometimes bordering on cruel.Throughout the episode, Alex describes the emotional toll of repeated miscarriages - the way each loss chips away at you until you feel like this cracked, fragile version of yourself, desperately trying to glue the pieces back together again. Her IVF journey has involved genetic testing, endless decisions, and the constant tug-of-war between hope and self-protection. She's made lifestyle changes, like going gluten-free, in her determination to give future embryos the best possible chance. And woven through all of this is the gang: the friends, the online communities, the people who show up and get it when the world feels impossibly heavy. Alex's story is a powerful reminder of how vital compassion and understanding are when talking about pregnancy loss - and how much it matters when someone finally says, “I see you… and you're not alone.”Key TakeawaysAlex relocated to Singapore for her husband's work and is settled there long-term.She has experienced multiple miscarriages, each bringing its own unique heartbreak.Cultural differences in Singapore's healthcare system can lead to abrupt or blunt communication. After receiving a harsh diagnosis, Alex trusted her instincts and sought a second opinion. The emotional impact of loss can feel like being a cracked vase, with resilience chipped away piece by piece. Her IVF journey included genetic testing after repeated miscarriages. She has made lifestyle changes, including going gluten-free, to support her fertility.Support from friends and online communities has been essential throughout her journey. The episode highlights how deeply compassion and sensitivity are needed when discussing pregnancy loss.We are The Worst Girl Gang Ever Foundation. We're all about bringing people together who are going through the tough stuff — baby loss, infertility, and everything in between — and making sure no one has to face it alone. What does “home” look like when your life is rooted in both connection and impermanence? In this episode, we sit down with actor and arts educator Noah Casner, a creative Swiss Army knife based in New York City and a familiar face in Mansfield through his performances at the Renaissance Theatre. Noah talks about what it’s like to arrive as an out-of-town performer, walk into a rehearsal room full of strangers, read the energy of a space, and advocate for art that feels truly accessible to the communities it serves. From pandemic-era Survivor marathons to navigating long-distance friendships and relationships spread across cities and time zones, Noah reflects on how to build real community in places you may only call home for a season. Along the way, we talk about rest, boundaries, and what it really means to be a “better villager,” showing up for others without pouring from an empty cup.Support the show: https://richlandsource.com/membersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I love it when my family gets to come home for Christmas! Sometimes we have to go to some great lengths to get people home to celebrate together, but being together is the best gift we could ever hope for. As we look forward to Christmas this advent we are remembering that God sent His one and only Son to leave home so He could bring us home. Yes, Jesus left His home in heaven, freely giving Himself for us so He could bring us home. And the home Jesus is preparing is the best home ever!
What does "home" really mean? In this Advent message, we explore the profound reality that we're living in exile, separated from God since the Garden of Eden. Through Isaiah's prophecy of a shoot rising from Jesse's stump, we discover that God sent a Savior who entered our exile, walked through our brokenness, and died on a cross to lead us home. While we wait for Christ's return, we can give others a preview of that home through patience, forgiveness, and grace.
Episode #439: “The key human rights issue within Thailand and more broadly within the region is migration related,” says Ben Harkins, a veteran labor rights and migration expert who has spent over seventeen years working across Southeast Asia. From refugee camps to industrial zones, Harkins has witnessed how migration has become both a lifeline and a trap—an act of survival in systems built on exploitation. He began his career along the Thai-Myanmar border in the 2000s, where tens of thousands of Karen and other ethnic minorities lived in sprawling camps after fleeing conflict. “It's only been this year, in fact, that we've finally seen a major transition in refugee policy in Thailand,” he notes, referring to new measures allowing some refugees to legally work outside the camps for the first time. For Harkins, this small policy shift represents freedom long denied. Over the years, he has researched the migration that sustain Thailand's economy. “The flows from Myanmar are so complex,” he explains. “These are very heterogeneous flows of migrants.” His work with the International Labour Organization (ILO) has exposed forced labor, human trafficking, and modern slavery in sectors like fishing, manufacturing, and agriculture. When Myanmar's 2021 coup dismantled years of fragile progress, Harkins says it upended everything he had worked for. “Just overnight, my entire world was turned upside down, basically,” he recalls. Colleagues and partners he had collaborated with for years were suddenly arrested, in hiding, or silenced. The military junta publicly denounced his research in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar, accusing him of spreading lies about labor conditions. “Migration itself has sort of become weaponized in many ways by the military junta,” he explains of the current reality, describing how the regime taxes overseas workers, manipulates remittances, and uses migration control to punish dissent. Now based in Bangkok, Harkins rejects claims that international businesses can operate responsibly under dictatorship. “You just can't have responsible business if you don't have fundamental labor rights for workers,” he insists. Despite everything, he continues his work with the ILO. “The least I can do is make use of the voice that I have within the UN system to try to support these principles of social justice as much as I can.”
With special guest: Rosie Ayliffe… in conversation with Bill Kable All Hell broke loose on that night in 2016. When we speak with Rosie Ayliffe about her book Far from Home we hear firsthand how her loving 20 year old daughter Mia was put in harm’s way in a backpacker hostel. We hear how Mia and another backpacker who tried to protect her were both killed by another resident in the middle of a psychotic episode. What made it even worse is that Rosie was far away on the other side of the world in England when this nightmare unfolded. Rosie’s dreams of a future life involving her daughter Mia were gone. Rosie thought that her daughter was working in a healthy environment on a farm in outback Queensland in order to comply with the Australian government’s visa requirements for an extended stay in Australia. After being told by the local Police in England about her daughter’s tragic death Rosie decided immediately to come to Australia and get to the bottom of what had happened. Podcast (mp3)

If you've ever spent any significant amount of time in Italy or around native Italians, you will soon have discovered: Italians are loud. A recent trip to the peaceful Austrian Alps, in which she was confronted with lots and lots of Italians on vacation in a place outisde of Italy, brought home this reality to Tiffany more than ever before. Turns out, when Italians are in a non-Italian context, they seem even louder. Is there a genetic reason Italians talk more loudly, or is it simply because they are used to living in a loud place and necessarily modulate their voices to match? Or is there a deeper reason? Also, as an expat whose dream was once to live with and among Italians, how long does it take before your chosen people start to get on your nerves? ------------------------------------- COME TO ROME WITH US: Our third annual Bittersweet Life Roman Adventure is all sold out for 2025! This episode comes to us from independent journalist Scott Gurian. In the Nørrebro neighborhood of Copenhagen, there's a small building with a garden and wooden seats. At first glance, it looks like some sort of neighborhood cafe, but it's actually the Menneskebiblioteket or Human Library, where the "readers" and "books" are people having deeply personal and intimate conversations about topics that might normally be considered off-limits or taboo in polite society. The library is staffed by volunteers whose life stories and experiences mean they face some sort of stigma, whether it be due to their ethnicity, religion, orientation, occupation, disability, or social status.Gurian visited the Human Library and produced this episode for his award-winning documentary-style travel and culture podcast Far from Home. Since its beginning in Denmark, the Human Library concept has now spread to more than 80 countries on 6 continents. While exiled in Babylon, the King adopts Daniel and his friends into his royal court, granting them privilege and power. All he asks for in exchange is total allegiance. The way Daniel deftly navigates serving the king while never compromising his service to the Real King serves as a bold inspiration for God's people. The stories of Daniel in exile also introduce us to the “Son of Man” through whom God will ultimately overpower all the evil kings of the world and bring life to all nations.
Have you ever lived in a new place that just doesn't feel like it will ever be your home? Maybe that's you right now. Living far from home can make you feel invisible, like nobody really sees your heart or the weight that you carry. Jesus once told a story about a shepherd who left the ninety-nine sheep to find the one that was lost—that mattered. And you also matter. Even if you've never heard His name before, Jesus sees you. He understands feeling misplaced and misunderstood, and far from home. But He also brings hope—a connection to God's love that is not limited by location. He says in the Bible, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” You're not forgotten. You are not unseen. That longing in your heart is an invitation from God. Come and follow Him; make your home in Him. Always remember, there is hope with God. radio.hopewithgod.com

Donald Trump's control of the Republican Party is almost complete. But there are still some members pushing back against the president. Sen. Lisa Murkowski is a persistent dissident. She was one of the few Senators to vote against a recent package of cuts that had already been approved in a spending bill. She has also voted against and expressed reservations about a number of Donald Trump's cabinet members. She voted to convict him on impeachment charges after the January 6 2021 Capitol Hill riots. On this episode of Free Expression, Gerry Baker speaks with Murkowski about her recent memoir, “Far From Home,” her concerns about HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s stances on vaccines in relation to the recent measles outbreak in Texas, and why she's “not losing sleep” over the direction of the Republican party. Learn more about your ad choices. Katie heads to Capitol Hill for an in-person conversation with Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. In this unflinching interview, Murkowski reflects on her high-stakes political journey, her defiance of party pressure, and her growing alarm over the threats facing American democracy. Drawing from her new memoir Far From Home, she opens up about the personal toll of standing alone and why, in this moment, staying grounded has never been harder—or more critical.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Have you ever noticed that Italian homes don't have closets? Bedroom closets, linen closets, broom closets, coat closets—they simply don't exist (unless you as a homeowner or renter decide to build one). Because of this lack of convenient storange space, Italians, twice a year, every year, have to swap out all their winter clothes (and pack them away) for their spring clothes, or vice versa. This got us thinking: what other things that an American might feel is indespensible in a home just doesn't exist in Italy? Or at least, it's not incuded when you buy or rent your home, but must be provided by you? A few things to keep in mind before you move to Italy... ***Katy's sister Dana has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 agressive brain cancer. To help with the staggering medical costs—her specialist is outside her insurance network—as well of the costs of temporarily relocating to San Francsico for her treatments, please consider donating to her GoFundMe. Mike Afolarin became famous for a role. But what he shared with me on set may be the most powerful thing he has ever done.He said many actors are suffering and smiling.Even though Far From Home made him a breakout star, the weight he carries behind the scenes is softer, sadder, and far more complex. He found photography through heartbreak. Work became a way to outrun the pain. One day, he picked up a camera — and that became his healing. He said the women in his life often call him emotionally detached. And right there on set, it clicked.Maybe it wasn't just about heartbreak. Maybe it began with an absent father. He became the emotional rock for his mother. Somewhere along the way, he forgot how to let others hold him too.He is open to reconciliation. But his father has not reached out.Still, he says everyone needs a father's love. Not having it made him grow up fast.It shaped his heart. His relationships. His silence. This is Mike Afolarin like you have never seen him before.Watch all new and old full episodes here: www.withchude.comBuy ‘How Depression Saved My Life', #TheDailyJoy and #TheDailyVulnerable books here: shop.withchude.comDonate to the work here: partner.withchude.comPlease subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/c/chude Hosted on Acast. Four young men from Austria — Tim, Julian, Ellis, and Gregor — share their powerful journey of Holocaust remembrance through their voluntary service at the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. Part of the Austrian Service Abroad program, each of them chose to travel across the world to work with survivors, guide Australian students, and immerse themselves in Holocaust education. In conversation with SBS, they speak candidly about their motivations, the survivor stories that have left a lasting impact, and the emotional complexity of answering students' questions about humanity's darkest chapter.
It's been nearly a month with lots of things happening, under our hosts' control and not, but they check back in this week with some overview of life stuff as well as nerdy and geeky stuff. WEEKS IN GEEK: Andrew finds a lot to like in the recent MCU-Disney+ show, Daredevil: Born Again, continuing the series from its run on Netflix. He also returns to survival gaming with Far From Home's Forever Skies. D. Bethel dips into new old sci-fi with the well-regarded series, The Expanse, but has been occupying his gaming time with Machinegames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Our hosts, of course, remember her fondly for her dips into Doctor Who across the years (she even used to be married to the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee) as well as her turn as the unforgettable villain, Queen Bavmorda, in Willow.
