Kevin Feige says there won't ever be a Star Wars/Marvel crossover, but after the apparent Mustafar cameo in Marvel's "What If..." series, logic dictates that Star Wars *must* exist in the MCU. Minute Ten: From One King's Speech to Two Guards' Patrol We have our first guest! We're joined by Ryanne Bennett from the Black Girl Nerds podcast joining us in the throne room to hear Odin's speech this week. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the tenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Odin continues his speech and Loki doesn't look too happy about it. What's up with that? Should we be reading into that more than we are? Odin seems like he's about to cry as he calls Thor his first born. Is he just overtaken with emotion or should we think that Kevin Feige was planning so far ahead that he knew the subject of Hela would come up later in the MCU? Odin has a nice little chat about mjolnir. Again, could anyone pick it up now? It doesn't have Odin's knot on it. Is there a reason Sif is giving Loki a bit of a dirty look here? Yeesh... those eyebrows... Meanwhile, in Odin's vault... Odin has what seems to be a typical royal speech. The cameraman's so bored he flies outside and down through a vent into the basement. Turns out, their basement is a giant spherical cave. But hark! What's with the funky architecture? A room hanging from the ceiling? I guess this is Odin's vault. Total comic book location that defies all logic. But yeah, it looks pretty cool. Inside, two Einherjar guards are on patrol. They pass several iconic Marvel relics – the Tuning Fork and the Tablet of Life and Time. Interesting that a lot of people initially thought the Tuning Fork was the Orb of Agamotto. Little did they know that it does, in fact, say ‘TUNING FORK' in runes on the wall behind it. Too bad you can only read it in a production still! More dutch angles leading us back to the casket of ancient winters. These shots paired with rather foreboding music could only mean one thing... trouble. But that's all we get in this minute! We'll have to wait until next week to see what's in store for these guards! For now, enjoy this minute of Odin's speech and the mysterious vault! Tune in! Minute Seven: From Soaring Sights to Storytime We have our first guest for our trip to Asgard! We're joined by Ryanne Bennett from the Black Girl Nerds podcast this week. Check her and her shows out at the links below. Ah, Asgard! In the seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We continue our flight through Asgard – quite the city. We talk about the general look of it, what production designer Bo Welch, producer Kevin Feige, and director Kenneth Branagh were trying to achieve with the design of this city. But just how do you pronounce the actual name for the royal palace, as well as the name of the church organ in Iceland from which it gets its look? Not easy to say... And like the Star Wars universe, why do Asgardians seem not to believe in any sort of hand railing system. The city is full of canyons, fantastical buildings, and enormous statues. It's a shame we never really get to explore any of these areas in this film or later ones. It's all been a story to young Thor and Loki in Odin's vault in the bowels of Asgard. We find out that Odin's voiceover is, in fact, him telling this story to his young sons, Thor and Loki. We see that Odin looks about the same age he did during the Asgard-Jotunheim battle so how much time has passed? These two actors playing young Thor and Loki are great. They look the parts and carry the personas of their adult selves very well. So what's happened to Dakota Goyo and Ted Allpress? Branagh really saw this story as this issue between a father and his sons. You can really get a sense his Shakespearean roots were drawn to this aspect of the story. But the relationship between Thor and Loki in the myths is different than what we get here. Speaking to production design, triquetras are everywhere in Asgard. These are also called Odin's knots. It's interesting how this symbol is often interchanged with the valknut. But are they technically the same thing? And hey – is that the eternal flame behind young Thor? Outside of all of this, there was a scripted scene immediately after this that revealed Odin feeling ill and in desperate need of the Allsleep. Was it cut because it would've been too confusing? Our first time visiting Asgard and we're loving it. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on TruStory FM's Discord channel! Director Zack Snyder might've just started a trend with his 4-hour long epic director's cut of Justice League - one that's inspiring a filmmaker in the MCU. The director behind Thor: The Dark World, Alan Taylor, recently spoke with Inverse and expressed interest in returning to put together a director's cut of his Marvel sequel. In the interview, he spoke fondly about witnessing Zack Snyder's pursuits at a director's cut. Continuing the interview, Alan Taylor states how the process was less than fun for him and how, "[Kevin Feige has] got an empire he's running and things have to be changed to fit into other things. My regret was that the movie that got released was changed quite a bit in a way that I couldn't shape really." It's been quite a few years since the 2013 Thor movie sequel, and with the MCU well on its way to releasing Thor: Love and Thunder next year, Disney is likely keeping their eyes forward with this particular Marvel property. #MCU #ThorLoveAndThunder In other news, Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett has a release date! Disney revealed in this tweet that the new entry into the Star Wars universe will be premiering on Disney Plus later this year, December 29th. And finally, looks like DC is getting into the NFT business. By registering for DC Fandome on October 5th, you can receive a free NFT chosen by the DC publisher and chief creative officer, Jim Lee.

People say they grow tired of superhero origin stories, but when Marvel delivers a knockout like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, they change their mind. Perhaps that's because the story Marvel delivers here, under the direction of Destin Daniel Cretton, allows for the story to take precedence, regardless of the fact that it's the twenty-fifth film in the MCU franchise. It doesn't feel like they're trying to find a way to shoehorn it in. It's its own story, and is one about family first. Ocean Murff, now at the head of the table, convenes The Film Board to discuss Cretton's film. Joined by Justin Jaeger, the Board's conversation covers the story, the performances, the camerawork, the effects, and how the film is proof that Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel have a strong plan with how they continue forward. Shang-Chi: A Wuxia Film With Family at Its Core Ocean and JJ talk about the family theme at the center of this story and how that feels like such a strong way for us to meet Shang-Chi. The flashback structure gives us a chance to meet Wenwu and see his lust for glory, but also to see him give it all up for the love of Li. This romance ends up being the heart of the film, and we find a lot to unpack here. We also have side characters like Katy and Xialing. How do they work? Were they in the comics and how have they changed? Clearly, they're here for the long haul. And they both end up providing some great elements to various fight sequences. Speaking of Fight Sequences: Shang-Chi Shines Here Cinematographer Bill Pope working with Cretton helped craft some beautiful and innovative fight scenes well worth watching and discussing. JJ even compares them to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The bus scene is great, but how about the gliding camera when Wenwu and Li first meet and battle? The CG dragon/super soulsucker fight may be a bit, well, CG, but it still looks amazing. And then there's Simu Liu. He deserves more roles because we want to see him in everything. And just like the importance of Black Panther providing a black superhero for African American audiences to identify with, Liu excels in the title role of Shang-Chi, giving him incredible conflict over his past and future decisions and creating a complex and powerful character for Asian audiences to connect with. But really, let's be honest – everyone will be able to connect to this character and to Liu. He helped push this film into the upper echelon of our MCU favorites. It's that good. So join us at the big table this month on The Film Board. It's a great chat about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Let us know what you thought! Star Jeffrey Wright Teases a More Involved Watcher https://www.cbr.com/what-if-jeffrey-wright-watchers-involvement   The latest episode of What If...? sees The Watcher finally talk to one of the characters on the show, as Doctor Strange Supreme detects the being's presence and calls out to him for help. For Wright, the episode was a powerful one and may tease an upcoming breaking point for the multiversal observer.   "In this instance, it speaks to Strange's mystical powers too, that he perceives him there. So there's two sides to that, but also yes, The Watcher is compelled by the danger that Strange is conjuring, obviously not only for himself but for his whole reality," Wright said "For The Watcher, there's only so much he can only watch. He's not a voyeur for voyeurism's sake, he is in some ways made up of these characters. Without them, what does he watch? [Laughs] He's profoundly compelled by them, and maybe there's only so much he can take. We'll see."   Moon Knight: Mark Ruffalo Plays Coy About Theorized Hulk Appearance https://www.cbr.com/moon-knight-hulk-appearance-mark-ruffalo-plays-coy   Despite a recent fan theory that the Hulk will make a guest appearance on Disney+'s upcoming Moon Knight series, veteran Bruce Banner actor Mark Ruffalo is remaining tight-lipped about whether or not he'll show up in it.   On his Twitter account, Ruffalo gave a self-deprecating response to an article discussing said appearance from the Jade Giant on the show, throwing shade at his own tendency to spoil major Marvel Cinematic Universe events. "As the person who's responsible for this next phase of the MCU, I would hate to spoil something," Ruffalo tweeted. "I have learned the hard way."   Marvel's Hawkeye TV series on Disney+ will explore the MCU at Christmas. https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/marvel-hawkeye-tv-series-is-a-christmas-show/   According to Hawkeye executive producer Trin Tranh, the series is “grounded and funny, packed to the brim with Christmas spirit.”   Tranh's remarks come from the latest issue of TV Guide, in which she sheds a little light on both the setting and flavor of the next MCU live action show. While we've already glimpsed the MCU at Christmastime in Iron Man 3, this will be the first holiday season we spend there after the events of Avengers: Endgame. In other words, it will be the first time we see how the citizens of the MCU are enjoying the holidays after they've been reunited with many relatives who had been “snapped” away by Thanos at the climax of Avengers: Infinity War.   Breaking Down Fury's Big Week with ‘What If…?' For this variant episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester turn once again to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to discuss the storytelling, characterization, and creative twists on the monomyth in Loki, the six-episode Disney+ series which recently concluded. In addition to discussing the character arcs of the core cast – Loki, Sylvie, Mobius, and Renslayer – we delve into the weighty themes and significant philosophical ideas underlying the series. We offer high praise for the successful collaboration of director Kate Herron and head writer Michael Waldron, who is poised to write the screenplay for the previously announced Star Wars movie being produced by MCU guru Kevin Feige. Loki certainly benefits from a second watch, which makes even more apparent the clever writing and honed storytelling in the series. "And the script is in the works and Ryan [Reynolds] is working very hard on it with our writers as we speak."   Letitia Wright injured doing Black Panther stunt https://variety.com/2021/film/news/letitia-wright-hospitalized-black-panther-wakanda-forever-1235049077/ “Letitia Wright sustained minor injuries today while filming a stunt for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.' She is currently receiving care in a local hospital and is expected to be released soon,” a spokesperson for Marvel said in a statement to Variety.   Marvel's What If Season 2 Confirmed To Include Phase 4 Movies https://screenrant.com/marvel-what-if-season-2-phase-4-movies/   In a Screen Rant exclusive interview from the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings press junket, Kevin Feige talked about season 2 of What If…?. In particular, he was asked how Phase 4 and the exploration of the multiverse will tie into What If….? Read what he had to say below:   “That's the fun thing about having the What If…? series now; we can explore questions just like that,” said Feige. “And I will say, just as season 1 is tapping into films and storylines from the MCU that you've seen up to this point, season 2 will definitely incorporate movies from Phase 4.”   Scarlett Johansson Slams “Misogynistic” Disney Response As Mouse House Tries To Move ‘Black Widow' Suit Behind Closed Doors – Update https://deadline.com/2021/08/scalett-johansson-disney-lawsuit-black-widow-response-arbitration-1234819262/   Disney insists Marvel's contract with Johansson provides for arbitration exactly in the event of a dispute like this one that erupted on July 29   MCU – Non-MARVEL STUDIOS   Spider-Man: No Way home Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt-2cxAiPJk   DISNEY+   Marvel Studios' ‘What If…?': Jeffrey Wright Talks Voicing Marvel's Most ‘Passionate Fan' with The Watcher https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/what-if-jeffrey-wright-the-watcher   “The character's an interesting one,” he explains. “He's got these strange powers that we've never really witnessed before. He has access to these worlds, and he has a type of vision that is pretty much singular to him. There was a lot of stuff to be excited about, and to play with, and to try to figure out. The Watcher is introduced on the cover of 1963's FANTASTIC FOUR as the most dramatic being in all of the universe. If you get asked as an actor to play something like that, you kind of take interest! It's all about that drama. He's born into the Marvel Universe in an interesting way, popping out on the moon there with the Fantastic Four. I wanted to find out who he was so that I could figure out, how might he sound for the first time, hearing him?”   Kevin Feige Gives Update on ‘Loki' Season 2, Says Director Search Will Begin Shortly https://collider.com/loki-season-2-update-filming-when-kevin-feige-interview/   Collider's Steve Weintraub spoke with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige during the press day for Marvel's new film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he asked Feige for an update on Loki Season 2. The Marvel executive was characteristically tight-lipped, but did confirm development is underway and the hope is to retain much of the same team that made Season 1 of the series:   “It is underway. We're developing it as we speak. The hope is that much of the same team will return. Kate is going on to bigger and better things, so the director search will begin shortly.”   As for when Loki Season 2 might start filming, Feige promised he's “not being evasive” but said he's “not sure exactly where it falls between next year and the year after.” So production could begin as soon as 2022, or it might not go before cameras until 2023, which means an even longer wait until it's on Disney+.   Loki was not originally planned as an ongoing series, but the decision to make a second season was made during production, which led to some tweaks to the final episode. After the finale of Loki aired, reports surfaced that Hiddleston will be seen as Loki in the feature film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So it's possible that whatever Loki Season 2 is is tied to how the multiverse unfurls across the next few Marvel movies. Shang-Chi and Eternals both appear to be fairly disconnected from the multiverse idea, but Spider-Man: No Way Home and the aforementioned Doctor Strange sequel both reportedly deal with the arrival of the multiverse pretty heavily.   Marvel's ‘Armor Wars' Starring Don Cheadle Taps Yassir Lester As Head Writer Of Disney+ Series https://deadline.com/2021/08/marvels-armory-war-yassir-lester-1234818795/ Sources say Yassir Lester has been brought on to pen Armor Wars starring Don Cheadle, who will reprise his role of James Rhodes aka War Machine. We're back from our long July slumber with a new game, news, trailers, and a list of movies celebrating teachers who are just... the... worst. Steve has a report on 'No Way Home' — have you heard the rumors he's been unable to substantiate? Apparently, according to Kevin Feige, there's trailer news about the new Spider-Man entry that might point to a shift in how these big budget tent poles are marketed. The Scarlett Johansson-Disney-Black Widow lawsuit is gaining traction. We advocate for restraint. Yes, this is absolutely a situation of big companies behaving badly. Yes, there is absolutely a corporate privilege and exploitation angle as all parties position for future litigation. But these sorts of disputes are — let's remember — why the legal system exists. It will be hard to watch, but it will be resolved with new contracts and new ways to adapt. We weigh in just a bit this week. For a fantastic tie-in to our list this week, did you hear the news? Mr. Hand is getting more movies! A LOT more movies! The South Park team is gearing up for a deal to bring more seasons of the show and a number of feature length projects that you just have to hear to believe. If you liked that one South Park movie, prepare to be overjoyed. As for trailers, looking for your next stop-motion-from-found-objects fetish? Look no further than Steve's entry this week. Ridley Scott is in Andy's House, and Pete is all-in with Kate. And, as a bonus, we drop in the trailer for Val now streaming on Amazon Prime as pre-work for our show on Real Genius in a few weeks — a tough but heart-warming trip down memory lane with Val Kilmer and his son, Jack. In an unprecedented move even we didn't see coming, this week's game is a trip down production company music history in which Steve and Andy attempt to pair company, composer, and decade to logo scores. Oh, what's unprecedented about that? It's a listener submission! This comes courtesy of listener Adam Underwood who did a massive amount of work preparing clips and trivia that surely Pete is unable to properly perform to expectation. Thanks, and apologies if we broke your game, Adam. It was great fun! This Week's Trailers! Steve's Trailer: Mad God Andy's Trailer: House of Gucci Pete's Trailer: Kate Bonus: Val THE LIST! The movie this week was Fast Times at Ridgemont High and while the community had a whole slew of options, they seemed to key in on our favorite teacher, Mr. Hand, as portrayed by the late, great, Ray Walston. Is he really a bad teacher? Is he really a guy who deserves to serve as anchor to such a list? Sure, maybe at some point he was gracious, generous, and understanding in his instruction on the Platt Amendment. But after our time with him in Fast Times, we just aren't sure that he likes people anymore. And so we say Aloha, Mr. Hand. Thanks for the inspiration as we explore teachers who are JUST THE WORST. The gaming industry shows its ugly side once again with Activision Blizzard's behind the scenes gross business practices catching the attention of the public eye. The House of Mouse shifts blame to the victim and throws out her salary as well as the panini in an attempt to make her look bad. Kevin Feige is embarrassed & angry. Now word is that Emma Stone might step forward as well.
