This is a series of 66 mini podcasts - to support you through a 66 day alcohol free challenge. The challenge lasts for 66 days because that's how long it takes to change a habit.   We have published an e-book called "66 days to sobriety" (available on our website https://www.tribesober.com) - this book contains 66 pages of tips, tools and motivation so I will read a page a day for these mini podcasts. I will also update you on the healing taking place in your body and mind as you progress through the 66 days. What to drink when you don't drink As you progress through your alcohol free journey hopefully you are experimenting and discovering your “go to” drinks.   Whether you are at home or out on the town you need to have some choice.  Drinking at home is easier as at least you can scour the supermarkets and stock up on delicious juices, cordials and tonic waters.  Lautus de-alcoholised wine and Duchess virgin G & T will deliver to your door. Make sure your fridge is always full of lovely AF choices so you won't feel you are missing out.   When you are out and about you need to avoid the “panic at the bar” syndrome – it can hit the moment you walk into a bar and are asked what you would like to drink.  If you are not prepared, your mind goes blank, your throat goes dry – and the pressure builds as everyone waits for you to decide.    Always have your “go-to” drink in mind when you go out. Even if it's just an AF beer or a tonic water with ice that's fine and will get you through.    Your objective is to avoid drinking alcohol.    If the bar does cocktails then ask for a mocktail – there are plenty of lovely bar staff that are delighted to do something different rather than produce endless glasses of wine and beer!    If you know where you are going then check out the drinks online – you might even discover something interesting that will make your boozy pals jealous!     If you're enjoying the challenge and would like to change your relationship with alcohol then please think about joining our community HERE Monthly membership is just R85 (£4/$5)    Or just check out our website - https://www.tribesober.com Any questions? - drop us a mail at membership@tribesober.com   The Sober Spring Challenge is sponsored by Drink Nil, South Africa's first store to  specialize in alcohol-free drinks.  Browse their huge selection of non-alcoholic wines, bubblies, spirits, beers and mocktails online, at drinknil.co.za. I first came across the various theories of motivation during my studies and often had an opportunity to put them into practice during my career as an HR executive.    There are two kinds of motivators: internal (also called intrinsic) and external (or extrinsic). Internal means being motivated to do things for their own sake - you've decided that you want to take a break from alcohol, and you strongly want to achieve your goal.   External motivators include rewards and potential punishments or other pressures outside of yourself.   The thinking is that “intrinsic” motivators are more powerful than “extrinsic” – the HR example would be that an employee will feel more motivated if she finds the nature of her work interesting than if she is paid a high salary  (although its nice to have both of course ;-)   The moral of this HR lecture is that you should be using both kinds of motivators to keep you on track…for example:-   You may have decided to ditch the drink (for a while at least) because you hit  “rock bottom” – this kind of experience can be a powerful intrinsic motivator.  Write down the story of what happened and how you felt about it – and read it often as you progress through your alcohol free time.   The extrinsic motivators are all about the treats, the rewards, the tracking Apps, the weight loss, the clear skin, bright eyes and better sleep!    The prospect of having to confess to your WhatsApp buddies that you fell off the wagon also counts as an extrinsic motivator! This worry keeps so many of us trapped for years… Alcohol really is the “only drug we have to justify not taking” isn't it? Telling people we have stopped drinking (even if only for a while) is not easy – we are peeling off from the “herd” and making ourselves vulnerable. People love to zone in on, look you in the eyes and ask you if you have stopped because you have a “problem”… The ones who will give you the hardest time are the ones that are aware that they are drinking too much themselves - and are worried that if you are sober you might just notice! That's where this Sober Challenge can help – you have a ready answer to the inevitable “what do you mean you're not drinking? You are “doing a WWW Sober challenge” – (along with a lot of other cool people ;-) Some of us drank quite heavily when we were young because it felt a bit “edgy and rebellious” – well alcohol has become so “normalized” in society these days that its far from rebellious to drink – in fact it's more like becoming “one of the sheep”… So make a stand – be a rebel – ditch the drink! (even if only for 66 days!)   If you're enjoying the challenge and would like to change your relationship with alcohol then please think about joining our community HERE Monthly membership is just R85 (£4/$5)    Or just check out our website - https://www.tribesober.com Any questions? - drop us a mail at membership@tribesober.com   The Sober Spring Challenge is sponsored by Drink Nil, South Africa's first store to  specialize in alcohol-free drinks.  Browse their huge selection of non-alcoholic wines, bubblies, spirits, beers and mocktails online, at drinknil.co.za. However I am pretty sure that if I was to ask you which part of Sober Spring Challenge was most helpful you would say the WhatsApp group. Connection is the opposite of addiction (so says Johan Hari in his awesome TED talk Many of us begin drinking in an effort to socialize with others but eventually it can escalate to the point where we are turning down social invitations because we would rather stay at home alone with our bottle of wine – which is fast becoming our “best friend”! That's why this journey brings many people out of self imposed “isolation” towards deep and meaningful connections with a completely new crowd of people. We begin our workshops with “shares' and I am always humbled by how people open their hearts to a bunch of strangers about just how unhappy alcohol is making them. This Sober Challenge has been a bit like a mini on-line workshop as you have all been so open about your own struggles and supportive of each other.  In the “old days” you either had a drink problem and sat in a church basement saying “I am an alcoholic” every week – or you were fine. These days alcoholism has finally been recognized as a “spectrum” – with millions of us residing somewhere between being “fine” or being a serious “alcoholic” There are now a myriad of choices to change your relationship with alcohol and World Without Wine is just one of them –thank you for choosing to do this Sober Challenge with us! Alcohol and Adrenal Fatigue We hear a lot about “adrenal fatigue” these days and there are plenty of medics out there who will diagnose this and provide you with medication/supplements. However it could be worth reflecting on the role alcohol could be playing - some adrenal fatigue sufferers are under the misguided illusion that alcohol is a relaxant, and for that reason it's okay to drink it. Let's consider why that's not such a good idea. Firstly, alcohol depresses the function of the adrenal glands, meaning that cortisol production is lowered. On the surface, this may not initially seem like such a bad thing, but over time, impaired or lowered cortisol production can lead to poor immunity, increased inflammation and disturbed sleep. Another problem lies in the fact that whenever you consume alcohol, the liver has to take a step back from its other jobs to prioritize metabolising it out of your system. This means that it has a harder time working on ridding the body of excess circulating hormones such as adrenaline. Furthermore, regular consumption of alcohol (particularly if this is combined with sugary mixers) causes your blood sugar to rise. This is very bad news if it's happening on a regular basis and will lead to weight gain. Weight gain is common in people with adrenal exhaustion, placing this extra, unnecessary burden on the body only compounds the problem. So avoiding alcohol is the most sensible approach for anyone with adrenal fatigue. If you're having difficulty winding down or managing your stress levels, there are far healthier ways to deal with it. I will also update you on the healing taking place in your body and mind as you progress through the 66 days.   Is willpower a limited resource I spent years trying to “control” my alcohol consumption. I would succeed for a while but inevitably it would all go horribly wrong and I would berate myself for having “no willpower” My thinking was that “willpower” was a personality trait – you were either a strong person with plenty of it – or not. However recent research likens willpower to a finite resource – almost like a “muscle” that gets tired. Once you've used up your daily quota, it's gone. So if you've had a really difficult day at work and used a lot of “willpower/self control” to stay awake in a long boring meeting and then you get home and remember it's a “no alcohol day” you could struggle more than if you had sailed through your working day with no problems. Click HERE The good news is that if willpower is like a “muscle” which gets tired when it's used it can also be trained to be stronger. Managing to control your behaviour today will make it more likely that you will be able to do so in the future too. So every time you say no to a drink craving, you're not only avoiding a drink now, you're strengthening that willpower “muscle”. So work that willpower muscle today! Alcohol is a false friend It's so easy for a few glasses of wine to become our "go to" remedy if we are feeling anxious.   Do that for long enough and you will build a neural pathway in your brain which is a precursor for addiction. In spite of that initial glow alcohol increases anxiety and depression to the point where even small problems can seem unsurmountable. Before you drank alcohol you would just deal with whatever came your way. Alcohol is chemically designed to make you rely on it and believe that you cannot function without it. You need it to get through that business lunch, then to de-stress when you get home and finally as an elixir to sleep. Well the good news is that neural pathways can be changed - and just by taking time off alcohol you are changing your habits. You resist the urge to surf the Web instead of finishing your expense report. You reach for a salad when you're craving a burger. You bite your tongue when you'd like to make a snide remark. Yet a growing body of research shows that resisting repeated temptations takes a mental toll. Some experts liken willpower to a muscle that can get fatigued from overuse."    The implications of this are quite interesting - say you've had a really tough day at work - an endless meeting which demanded all your willpower just to stay focussed - then you get home and remember its a "no alcohol day" - could just be the last straw for that worn out "willpowermuscle"!   So should we be relying on willpower if we want to quit or moderate our drinking? - a better way would be to change our belief system which has built up over many years of conditioning, social pressure and advertising.    Follow the process:-   1.  discover your "limiting beliefs" around alcohol   (eg "I need a glass of wine to relax at the end of the day") 2.  convert them into "empowering beliefs" (eg. "there are plenty of ways to relax at the end of the day without alcohol") 3.  "do the work" (experiment with other ways of relaxing until they become natural)   Using this process brings about a deep "mindshift" in your subconscious and will actually diminish your desire to drink...   If you're enjoying the challenge and would like to change your relationship with alcohol then please think about joining our community HERE Monthly membership is just R85 (£4/$5)    Or just check out our website - https://www.tribesober.com Any questions? - drop us a mail at membership@tribesober.com   The Sober Spring Challenge is sponsored by The Duchess Alcohol-Free Drinks Studio.  The Duchess is available in three refreshing alcohol-free gin & tonic variants and their brand new alcohol-free wine spritzers: Elderflower White and Berry Rose

No Worries!  Before I got sober, worrying was a way of life for me.  I drank because I was worried; I was worried because I drank.   My drinking contributed to new worries that I couldn't have even imagined when sober!  Sobriety opened up crucial space in my mind to discover and eradicate the mindset in which I was mired. I finally realized that I didn't have anything to worry about at all.  Worrying never, ever changes outcomes for the better.   In fact, worrying never changes outcomes, full stop.  Only taking the right action when the time comes will ever change anything. Ditch the drink for better sex Of course we have been brainwashed into thinking that alcohol is the gasoline of fun and that means we need it for sex. We rely on alcohol to remove our inhibitions and loosen us up. In reality alcohol dulls our senses - including our sense of touch. Drinking may well increase the urge but once the party gets started performance and pleasure actually decrease. Alcohol is the main cause of sexual dysfunction in men. Both men and women are more likely to remain aroused without alcohol. Drinking alcohol before sex means that your brain receives information from your body more slowly. Result is that instead of getting blissed out your brain hardly registers what is going on! So don't close down your body's ability to feel pleasure. Alcohol is a drug Alcohol kills more people every year than all the hard drugs put together. Yet somehow alcohol has become so normalised that we see it as an essential to a happy life! We rarely call alcohol a drug - but alcohol absolutely IS a drug - I think the confusion arises because alcohol is legal Not only is it legal but the hype is that a small amount is good for you - it's not! Although alcohol is chemically designed to be addictive somehow people who drink too much are seen as "weak" Whereas if someone starts taking heroin we expect them to become addicted! Amy Winehouse used alcohol and drugs yet she struggled with alcohol the most. Although the media liked to focus on her drug use alcohol was the only drug in her body when she died. Having a "hangover" is seen as perfectly acceptable whereas "coming down" from a drug not so much. All these contradictions prove that we treat alcohol differently from other drugs - when we really shouldn't. What are you afraid of?   No more fun?    Undoubtedly we have had plenty of fun filled nights when alcohol was involved - but there have also been those other nights which were just plain boring or even worse have descended into arguments and tears..   We have been conditioned by our social lives and by marketing to give alcohol far too much credit for "fun".   What really makes the fun is the people you are with, the mood you are in, the music etc..  Some of your sober nights out may be rubbish but others may be awesome.  Just go with the flow - you are experimenting remember - and get it all down in that journal!   How will I cope?   We are under the illusion that alcohol helps us cope with stress - it doesn't.  This was proved recently when a batch of mice were injected with alcohol for a month, the control group of mice stayed sober ;-)  Then they were all put through a stressful obstacle race - and guess what - the sober mice coped much better.   Drinking does indeed numb the pain and is equivalent to putting your head in the sand for a few hours but the only way to reduce stress is to tackle the problem that is stressing you. What if I fail?   One of the advantages of taking a break from alcohol is that it gives you a chance to "reset" your habits and to actually test how dependent you may have become on alcohol.   There is an ingrained belief in society that alcohol is an essential part of our lives and happiness.  Ergo life without alcohol equals deprivation.  Try turning those beliefs upside down - what about heroin, cigarettes - we don't normalise or romanticise these - we see them for exactly what they are.    Alcohol is a "sneaky bugger" and if it has got its claws into you then it's time to make a change.  Come to a WORKSHOP and explore your relationship with alcohol. Alcohol sneaks up on you  Drinking has become so normalised that drinking everyday doesn't seem such a big deal - after all everybody else does it. Getting home from work, opening a bottle of wine, getting the dinner on and then sip, sip throughout the evening - well what's wrong with that? The thing about everyday drinking is that it will catch up with you.   It will lead to restless sleep, excess weight, premature ageing not to mention the risk of cancer, stroke and diabetes. Another problem is that it saps away at your self discipline. Why go to the gym with a hangover when you just want to knock back a Bloody Mary and eat a greasy meal. All those things add up and lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. That's why it makes so much sense to "reset" with (at least) a month off alcohol. When we were children and then teenagers we laughed and giggled - a lot!   Then as we grew older and incorporated drinking into our lives we somehow started associating that laughter and fun with alcohol. We look back and remember those fun "drinking sessions" - but in reality we are just remembering the laughter, the relationships and good conversations. Those fond memories are more about the friends you are with than the alcohol you are drinking but we lose sight of that because the wine is always flowing. Alcohol doesn't actually make any experience better - it just dulls your senses and emotions and makes you feel rubbish the next day. A quote from Victor Frankl who spent time in Auschwitz where he observed that some people managed to survive in the face of appalling hardship... Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning. The greatest task for any person is to find meaning in his or her own life. This made me wonder if us drinkers are people who focus too much on the quest for pleasure.  Perhaps the other side of addiction is actually philosophy - and when we emerge from addiction we can begin to look for meaning and purpose in our lives?   If you're enjoying the challenge and would like to change your relationship with alcohol then please think about joining our community HERE Monthly membership is just R85 (£4/$5)    Or just check out our website -  https://www.tribesober.com Any questions? - drop us a mail at membership@tribesober.com   The Sober Spring Challenge is sponsored by Drink Nil, South Africa's first store to  specialize in alcohol-free drinks.  Browse their huge selection of non-alcoholic wines, bubblies, spirits, beers and mocktails online, at drinknil.co.za. Alcohol is not a magic potion Imagine if your child came home from school and told you he's had a really bad day - would you open the fridge and get him a beer? - of course not! As kids we didn't need drugs to make us happy or to cheer us up - we just instinctively knew how to have fun. Yet as adults we have been brainwashed into thinking that we need alcohol to relax us, to de-stress and of course to socialise. Alcohol has been given "magic powers" by the liquor industry who spend billions on marketing to create this illusion. The truth is that alcohol is actually a depressant - which numbs our emotions - including happiness. As you go through your alcohol free time try to continue with your "normal" activities. You will be building valuable skills around how to socialise and de-stress without alcohol. Going back to stone age times our ancestors were either in a state of "fight or flight" (when confronted with a wild animal) or (if they had eaten the wild animal) they were in the much more relaxed state of "rest and digest". These days we don't have to worry about finding enough to eat but rarely are we in a truly relaxed "rest and digest" state either. We have managed to create a world where many of us live in a constant state of anxiety, around our jobs, our kids and the state of the planet in general. In addition we have magazines telling us that we need to be "happy" all the time - not to mention our friends on social media posting pictures of their perfect lives 24/7. The wellness industry is packed with "feel good" ideas and "mood booster" juices to keep us in a constant state of elation. When sadness, disappointment and/or loneliness do put in an appearance we just don't know how to cope. When we were drinking it was easy - we just chased those feelings away with a glass or two of wine. When we stop drinking (even for a while) we feel raw and exposed. The trick is to realise that we were not put on this earth to be happy every single minute. To be human is to experience the whole gamut of emotions and to learn to "sit with" whatever we are feeling in the knowledge that it will pass.   The upside of this is that when you do feel "happy" your feelings will be genuine and deep - not a result of a chemical substance.   If you're enjoying the challenge then please think about joining our community HERE Or just check out our website - https://www.tribesober.com Any questions? - drop us a mail at membership@tribesober.com   The Sober Spring Challenge is sponsored by Drink Nil, South Africa's first store to  specialize in alcohol-free drinks.  Browse their huge selection of non-alcoholic wines, bubblies, spirits, beers and mocktails online, at drinknil.co.za. These days I have a completely different take on people who drink "moderately" - its not about using every ounce of will power you can dredge up, nor about counting units or even about planning your social life around 14 units a week.  Neither is it about managing for a few weeks and then failing spectacularly one night and feeling terrible for days   People who are truly able to drink moderately actually don't think about alcohol very often.  If they are going to a wedding they might have a glass of champagne to toast the happy couple.  If they are at a restaurant they will have a glass of very good wine to go with their food.  If they are at home alone the thought of drinking alcohol will not even cross their mind.  Sometimes they may even leave half a glass on wine because they didn't feel like finishing it!   Granted - these people are quite rare - and those of us not blessed with an "off" switch can only look on with wonder ;-)   If you're enjoying the challenge then please think about joining our community HERE Or just check out our website - https://www.tribesober.com Any questions? - drop us a mail at membership@tribesober.com   The Sober Spring Challenge is sponsored by Drink Nil, South Africa's first store to  specialize in alcohol-free drinks.  Browse their huge selection of non-alcoholic wines, bubblies, spirits, beers and mocktails online, at drinknil.co.za. How will I ever have fun again if I stop drinking?  What about those 3 hour lunches with my pals?  What about those crazy drinking games? These questions could well cross your mind. Alcohol is not a fun machine - yes it helps us lose our inhibitions and gets us in a party mood quickly but our happiness actually depends on the people we're with as well as the mood and environment. Alcohol is a depressant - a few glasses of wine will give you a "buzz" but after that it's all downhill. We've all had nights when we have drunk a lot and not had a good time - and of course waking up at 2am with a crashing headache, trying to remember what happened is just about the opposite of fun. Almost anyone can get stop drinking for a month if they become a recluse and just stay home counting the days.. It takes far more courage to continue as normal (minus the booze) and see what happens. You will find yourself developing new skills (sober small talk anyone?) as you navigate our alcohol drenched society - think of yourself as an anthropologist observing the drinkers around you. You may also find you get plenty of attention - people are generally intrigued by non-drinkers - so come up with some good reasons why you are not drinking - and have fun with it! You may also decide that you need some new activities in your life if everything you do revolves around alcohol. You may find you enjoy your alcohol free time so much you decide to carry on... When we drink a lot our bodies get lazy - they leave it to the alcohol to make us feel good and often neglect to produce that feel-good hormone dopamine. When we stop drinking we can feel a bit "flat" as we have to wait a while for our natural dopomine to click back in.   One of the best ways to reset is by exercising.   When we exercise we release endorphins  -  sparking positive and even euphoric feelings. It's a great and healthy way to get that "buzz" we were always chasing with a couple of glasses of wine. So, don't allow your brain to worry about things that need to be done. Instead, write these tasks down and then check them off one at a time.   Create something When we're in creative mode, we can become hyper-focused. As a result, we can enter a state called flow. Dopamine is the brain chemical that allows us to achieve this state. The lesson is this: take up a hobby or activity in which you actually create something tangible.   Exercise Not only does exercise help us relieve stress, achieve better physical health and make us more productive; it boosts our dopamine levels. More specifically, exercise increases multiple neurotransmitters – serotonin and endorphins, besides dopamine, receive a boost. Alcohol and sleep    Have you noticed any differences in your sleeping patterns during your alcohol-free time?   When a non-drinker starts getting ready for bed their brain will start to “dampen things down” to get them feeling sleepy.   However, if you are a regular drinker your body won't do that because it will rely on the artificial effect of alcohol to get you to sleep.   That's why for the first 4 or 5 nights you might not sleep so well – your body is just not used to doing that natural “winding down” thing..   The good news is that after just 5 nights your brain will re-adjust – and your sleep will improve.   However long you have been drinking you have not really been getting good quality sleep – daily fatigue may be the norm for you – relying on morning coffee and evening drink(s) to “pick you up..   So the other good news is that you are going to get the boost of more energy during your alcohol-free time– not just when you wake up in the morning  – but for the whole day and evening! Ever wondered what actually happens in your brain when you drink that much anticipated glass of wine after work? Well the first glass stimulates the pleasure centre of your brain.  There are two main chemicals that work in the pleasure centre:- Dopamine, which is responsible for desire and craving and Seratonin which is responsible for the feeling of satiety and inhibition. In a healthy brain there is a delicate balance between these two chemicals but alcohol throws off that balance and lots of dopamine gets dumped into our system, making us want more of what gave us pleasure (the alcohol) Our brain must keep the body in balance so to counteract the artificial stimulation from alcohol it will send out a chemical downer, called dynorphin. This dynorphin actually suppresses the euphoric feelings, and as the effects of that first glass start to wear off, our sense of well-being actually falls BELOW where it was when we started drinking. Leaving us LOWER than when we got off work after a hard day! This is a series of 66 mini podcasts - to support you through a 66 day alcohol free challenge. The challenge lasts for 66 days because that's how long it takes to change a habit.   We have published an e-book called "66 days to sobriety" (available on our website www.worldwithoutwine.com) - this book contains 66 pages of tips, tools and motivation so I will read a page a day for these mini podcasts. I will also update you on the healing taking place in your body and mind as you progress through the 66 days.     Are you in a state of "cognitive dissonance"?   Are you aware of some kind of “inner struggle” going on  inside your head during this alcohol free time? Your conscious mind is well aware that you need to give your liver a holiday and you had no hesitation in signing up for this challenge. However did your subconscious get the memo? Your subconscious has been conditioned by years of marketing, socializing and peer pressure – it now fully believes that alcohol is essential for a happy and full life. That's the source of your “inner struggle” or “cognitive dissonance” and it feels like anxiety. Here is an exercise you can do to reduce those uncomfortable feelings. Make a list of “why” you drink.  (these are your “beliefs” around alcohol) Take a long hard look at each of those beliefs and unpack them – are they really true? As you are being a scientist in your own life, get on google and do some research… Here is an example… “I drink because I love the taste”  your belief Think back to that first drink you took – it tasted horrible! – we have to work at “acquiring” the taste of alcohol because our bodies naturally reject it – recognizing it as poison! So long as you know that you will be able to stick to the “safe” limits of a bottle and a half of wine a week then no reason to stress. However if you are struggling a bit and longing for the end of this challenge(!) then maybe you need to do a "future self meditation" Take a big sheet of paper and visualise your life in 10 years time  Where do you see yourself, what would be your ideal life, dream a little... The meditation itself will do a number of positive things, but most importantly, it will help you hold a vision of what direction you want your life to go, and who you want to become.   I am pretty sure that your dream doesn't include a vision of you  stumbling out of bars or drinking alone every evening.   If you are holding some anxiety that alcohol is becoming too important in your life then it might just be worth making this the year that you create an alcohol free life - and make it awesome! Well maybe that's not a bad thing – make it a more “mindful” time and think about keeping a journal to analyse what's going on.  Be a scientist in your own life!  When most of our socializing involves alcohol we can find ourselves trapped in a cycle of planning the drinking, doing the drinking – and then recovering (!) - leaving little time for discovering new interests or working on self-development. Use this alcohol free time as an experiment.  Go into meetup.com and check out all the hobbies and interests that people get up to – use Pinterest to create your vision board – if you are stuck grab one of your friends and brainstorm together! Alcohol is a calorie catastrophe!     No doubt you are aware of the calories in alcohol and that drinking a glass of wine is equivalent to eating a slice of cake.  Most people wouldn't dream of eating 3 slices of cake but somehow 3 glasses of wine just  slips down ;-)   What you may not know is that your body is so anxious to get rid of alcohol that it won't even think about burning up the calories that you have eaten for dinner until all traces of alcohol are out of your system.  Alcohol is so toxic that your body has to act fast and make it a priority to get rid of it.   Your highly intelligent body just wants to keep you alive – and is less concerned with keeping you slim!   So if you are used to eating organic, exercising regularly but still drinking alcohol on a daily basis you may want to have a re-think when you come to the end of your alcohol-free time. I would sit there, legs crossed, eyes closed but mentally I would be veering from extreme boredom to planning what I was going to eat for dinner. Over the years the evidence has been stacking up that meditation reduces stress, helps to keep us calm and enables us to sleep better. It's a great coping strategy and your alcohol free period might just be a good time to give it a go. When I first tried meditation we didn't even have cellphones never mind "apps" but these days technology is there to help us. I go to a weekly class and use one of my meditation apps on a daily basis - and I think I am getting there There are two apps that I love and use regularly - "Headspace" and "Calm" So why not give meditation a try - there is nothing to lose but your stress   If you're enjoying the challenge then please think about joining our community HERE Or just check out our website - www.worldwithoutwine.com Any questions? - drop us a mail at membership@tribesober.com   The Sober Spring Challenge is sponsored by Drink Nil, South Africa's first store to  specialize in alcohol-free drinks.  Browse their huge selection of non-alcoholic wines, bubblies, spirits, beers and mocktails online, at drinknil.co.za. This “withdrawal” feels a bit like mild anxiety and explains why that first drink in the evening tastes so good – and seems to alleviate your stress. That's why it makes so much sense to have at least 3 or 4 alcohol free days in your week – it gives your liver time to recover.   By the time you are halfway through your alcohol free challenge all traces of alcohol will be eliminated from your body and you should be free of that craving for a 6pm glass of wine.  Of course you may still miss “the ritual” so make sure you stock up on some alcohol free drinks to use as a replacement.
