John 7:47-49 The Pharisees then answered them, “You have not also been led astray, have you? No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” All of us have at some time had to deal with peer pressure. It can be somewhat jarring and scary to think that we are not in the mainstream. We've noticed how often propagandists use the phrase “not in the mainstream” to put down a particular idea or philosophy. The Pharisees used that tactic on the temple officials. In essence, they said, “None of us have sided with Jesus. Don't you want our approval? If you have been convinced to believe in Jesus, you also have been cursed like this crowd.” It is possible that today we will feel that same pressure the temple officials felt when it comes to Jesus. If we speak out about Jesus, people will think we are some super spiritual weirdo. If we don't laugh at the dirty jokes and use profanity like everyone else in the office, we will be rejected. What do the pastors and the elders think about watching R-rated and PG-13 movies? Or if you are a pastor or elder, what will the people to whom I'm trying to relate think if I can't converse with them about the latest movie? Without realizing it, peer pressure, or fear of man, may shape our lives more than the fear of God, or our relationship with Jesus. These verses encourage us to put Jesus first place in our lives. As we live to love with Jesus, we will want to make our decisions based on what gains His approval and glory. Three Scriptures come to mind that encourage us to not cave to the pressure of the crowd. First, Colossians 1:18, “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him.” Second, John 5:30, “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” Third, John 5:44, “How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?” It is obvious that the Pharisees want to put the pressure on the officials to seek their glory rather than the glory of God. As we renew our minds to think like Jesus, we put Him first in all things, and we seek His will and glory rather than the glory of men. Out of such a mindset, the love of God flows. I encourage you today to have the same attitude in yourself that Jesus had—seeking to please the Father by doing His will for His glory. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Would you pray about becoming a regular supporter of Elijah Ministries and the Live to Love with Jesus ministry? I hope you will receive the joy and benefit of "giving it forward," so others may receive encouragement to turn their hearts to God and to live to love with Jesus. The hallway of my junior high school seemed less like a passageway from class to class, and more like a gauntlet. Walking that hallway was painful business as my self-conscious self wondered where – if anywhere – I fit in to that mass of same-aged students known as my “peers.” As children move into the early stages of adolescence, peers become increasingly important. Kids feel more secure when they are accepted by a group of friends. Hiding in the confines of a group offers safety to an insecure and self-conscious teen. Peer acceptance is sometimes pursued with reckless abandon. . . and what they often abandon are the beliefs and behaviors you've instilled in them as decent, good, and right. Because rejection is feared and to be avoided at all costs, many kids will compromise these standards of right and wrong if that compromise will facilitate peer acceptance rather than rejection. Parents, talk to your teens about peer pressure, decision-making, God-honoring choices, and the nature of healthy friendships.

Because the teenage years are filled with so much change and uncertainty, your kids yearn for stability and normalcy. Their search for a safe place to belong leads them to the haven of friendships with peers. These friendships are important and necessary as our kids begin to move towards the independence of adulthood. This means that they'll face peer pressure. That pressure can either be positive - influencing them to make good choices - or negative. . . something most of us remember all too well from the impulsive peer-influenced decisions we made during our own teenage years! Getting to know your teen's friends opens a wide window into understanding the unique blend of peer pressures your teen is facing. That knowledge allows you to respond to those realities with Godly wisdom, direction, and boundaries. But that's not all. You'll be opening the door to other kids who will benefit from - and might even desperately need - your friendship, Godly wisdom, and guidance as well.

Peer pressure is often seen as negative, but as Justin puts it - "you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with". The key is healthy and positive friendships, and with loneliness at an all time high, we wanted to find out how the families on Parental Guidance are helping their kids make and foster friendships. In a world where kids feel lonelier than ever- despite being constantly “connected” - how can we help them build real, meaningful friendships and resist negative peer pressure? How are the families on Parental Guidance helping their kids make and foster friendships? In this episode, we dive into the crucial role of social skills, healthy face-to-face interactions, and intentional parenting to help children thrive socially and emotionally. KEY POINTS Not all peer pressure is bad — positive peer pressure can help kids adopt healthy habits. Many kids today struggle with loneliness despite being surrounded by peers, often due to excessive screen time and lack of real-world social practice. Social skills like introducing oneself, showing curiosity, and maintaining conversations are essential for resisting negative peer pressure. Parents play a key role by modelling healthy social interactions, facilitating opportunities, and keeping conversations about relationships open and non-judgemental. Excessive technology use may hinder social development, but more evidence is needed to fully understand the impact. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE "You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with — so help your kids choose wisely." – Dr Justin Coulson RESOURCES Find more parenting resources and tips for making your family happier at Happy Families. You can watch Parental Guidance on demand at 9NOW. ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS ✅ Reduce your child’s screen time and encourage more in-person social interactions.✅ Organise supervised, face-to-face playdates or gatherings to help kids practice social skills.✅ Have regular conversations with your child about their friendships — what’s working, what’s hard, and how they feel about making new friends.✅ Teach curiosity and empathy by modelling how to ask good questions and show interest in others.✅ Support your child in developing both structured (team sports, clubs) and unstructured (free play) social experiences.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What do you think of this episode? Do you have any topics you'd like me to cover?More than half of kids who've drunk alcohol under the age of 15 in the UK were offered it by their parents. Alcohol has been proven to cause seven types of cancer, according the World Cancer Research. According to other research, the earlier kids try alcohol the higher the risk they'll indulge in binge drinking and any alcohol-related harm.Parents don't want to harm their kids, so why are they giving them alcohol? According to research done by Community Alcohol Partnerships, parents often assume their kids are going to drink so they would rather it happened at home. To help us understand the issues, I invited Director of Community Alcohol Partnerships, Kate Winstanley, to talk through what we should be thinking as parents. PRACTICAL TIPS:Encourage sports, hobbies, clubs and social activities that keep your kids active and fulfilled.Teenagers say boredom is a reason for drinking. Encourage them to get a holiday job or volunteer.Establish routines, like mealtimes, that mean you can spend some time together and talk to each other. This helps your child to feel they can come to you if they have a problem.Know the facts and laws about alcohol and can talk in a balanced and constructive way about the pros and cons of drinking.Talk and listen to your teenager. It is important that they hear your views and that you hear theirs.Use everyday opportunities, for example a storyline in a TV programme, as a prompt.Make sure the ground rules are clear. Have consequences for breaking rules and enforce them. [22] For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” [23] And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” [24] And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” [25] And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” [26] And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. [27] And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison [28] and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. [29] When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. Who hasn't had to wait at a doctor's office well past the appointment time. It sucks. What is a reasonable amount of time to have to wait? Should you complain to someone? This episode starts with some interesting research that explains what you should do so your doctor knows your time is valuable and you shouldn't have to wait so long. https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/practices/ppatients-switched-doctors-long-wait-times-vitals Peer pressure is a powerful force – more powerful than people realize. You are constantly influencing people around you to be more like you, and they are influencing you to be more like them - without even realizing it. When you understand the power of peer pressure it can become a powerful tool. Joining me to discuss all this is Robert Frank, a professor of Management and Economics at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management and author of the book Under the Influence: Putting Peer Pressure to Work (https://amzn.to/3L4HPno). Almost everyone has felt shy. In fact, only 2% of people claim they never feel shy. The rest of us have all been in situations where we have felt shy to some extent. What is shyness? Why are some people more prone to it than others? Can you overcome shyness in situations that really matter? Here with some advice is Lynne Henderson who has worked with shy people to help them overcome that feeling that prevents people from fully engaging in life.By the way, it being shy isn't always a problem to be fixed. Sometimes it can be quite charming! Lynne is the founder of the Social Fitness Center and the founder and co-director of the Shyness Institute. She is also author of The Shyness Workbook (https://amzn.to/3sA1Njp). Sometimes you just “click” with someone. It can happen in romance, friendship and in business. People just click. What is happening when that happens? Who are you most likely to click with? Listen as we explore the magic of clicking – and hear some ways that will help you become better at clicking.
