Are high-end non-alcoholic drinks worth the price? What is the bartender's secret to great citrus-based cocktails like Margaritas or Mimosas? How do bartenders redefine a crafted cocktail without alcohol? Why does the term "Mocktail" for zero-proof non-alcoholic drinks offend many bartenders? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Elva Ramirez, author of the award-winning books Sparkling and Zero Proof. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Giveaway Three of you are going to win a copy of Elva Ramirez's terrific book, Sparkling: Champagne and Sparkling Cocktails for Any Occasion. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights How did bartenders at Dante in New York discover that burrata water could replace egg whites in a Champagne Ramos cocktail? Why should citrus juice be used within hours, and how can leftover juice be transformed instead of being wasted? What are the biggest mistakes home bartenders make with bottled juices? Why do large ice blocks make a better punch than cubes? What inspired Elva to write Zero Proof? How did she recognize that the non-alcoholic movement was becoming a lasting cultural shift? How does America's long-standing tension between loving alcohol and fearing its effects still shape drinking culture today? What was the infamous "Raines Sandwich," and how did it expose the loopholes in New York's early drinking laws? How do public declarations like temperance pledges connect to today's Dry January social media posts? Why did the US Army go completely dry in 1917 and how did that decision pave the way for Prohibition? Why do professional bartenders dislike the word mocktail and prefer the term "zero proof"? How did Seedlip, the first distilled non-alcoholic spirit, transform modern bar culture? Why are alcohol-free cocktails sometimes as expensive as traditional ones? How is the culture around not drinking changing? Why does Elva believe opting out of drinking should feel as natural as any other choice? Key Takeaways Are high-end non-alcoholic drinks worth the price? There's a real conversation happening among consumers: "Why am I paying $16 for a non-alcoholic drink?" But what you're not seeing is all the work that happened three days before to get you that drink. So what you're seeing when you get an expensive non-alcoholic drink is really the result of a lot of effort in the kitchen before it ever gets to the bar. How do bartenders redefine a crafted cocktail without alcohol? Bartenders are challenging themselves in this space. They were saying, "Okay, what if I take the alcohol out but still make something that's crafted, that still has balance?" They were doing all these really interesting experiments. They were using teas, ferments, and all these different things. That was really the seed of Zero Proof - the idea of how to continue evolving this craft and keep it inclusive. Why does the term "Mocktail" for zero-proof non-alcoholic drinks offend many bartenders? Bartenders prefer the term zero-proof, because "mock" means to make fun of or fake. They don't want the consumer to feel like they're making a lesser choice or not being seen in their choice when they order a non-alcoholic drink. They're also putting as much effort, if not more, into making these really beautiful non-alcoholic drinks. About Elva Ramirez Elva Ramirez is an author, journalist and brand strategist. She is the author of "Sparkling" and "Zero Proof," which were both finalists for Best Cocktail Book at Tales of the Cocktail in their respective years. "Sparkling" is a finalist for IACP's 2025 Best Cookbook Awards. Elva holds an MBA from CUNY Baruch College and a Master's in journalism from Columbia University. Apparently, choosing not to drink now makes you controversial. In this episode, Shane dives into the cultural weirdness around sobriety — why quitting alcohol freaks people out more than drinking too much, how clear-headed men are suddenly being called “radical,” and what this says about masculinity, culture, and freedom in 2025. From The Guardian's recent article “Mocktails for MAGA: Why the US Right Is Turning Sober” to the growing trend of men reclaiming their focus, faith, and families, Shane breaks down why a simple glass of sparkling water can now spark a political debate. You'll laugh, shake your head, and probably think twice about why society celebrates dysfunction and ridicules discipline. Because here's the truth, sobriety isn't extreme. It's clarity. It's leadership. It's power. And in a world that glorifies chaos, staying sober might just be the most rebellious move you can make. Key Takeaways Don't let culture define your character — “normal” isn't always right. True masculinity isn't about how much you can drink, but how much you can carry. Staying sober isn't weakness — it's the foundation of real freedom and clarity. Join the Movement If you're ready to level up your mind, health, and leadership:

She has garnered appreciation for her analytical approach and commitment to empowering listeners to make informed health decisions. Episode Summary: Join Dr. Kristin Hieshetter as she delves into the critical connection between alcohol consumption and breast cancer on this episode of Functional Health Radio. As alcohol use remains prevalent, understanding its health implications becomes crucial, especially in light of emerging research. Dr. Kristin examines the cultural shifts in alcohol consumption and the heightened awareness about its potential risks, leading into an in-depth discussion based on recent medical findings. In this informative episode, Dr. Kristin highlights the sobering reality illustrated by recent studies, showcasing the increased risk of breast cancer associated with alcohol consumption. From alcohol's biological impact on estrogen levels to its epidemiological connection to various cancers, listeners will gain a comprehensive understanding of the inherent health risks. Dr. Kristin also provides practical advice on reducing these risks, emphasizing mindful consumption and advocating for better dietary and lifestyle choices to mitigate cancer risks. Key Takeaways: Alcohol is widely consumed but poses significant health risks, including increased cancer risk, particularly breast cancer. Studies reveal that every 10-gram increase in alcohol consumption raises breast cancer risk significantly. Alcohol contributes to numerous cancer types, raising estrogen levels, which can exacerbate cancer risk, especially in post-menopausal women. Reducing alcohol intake can significantly lower cancer risk, encouraging more mindful drinking habits. Mocktails, like a raspberry basil concoction, provide healthy, antioxidant-rich alternatives to alcohol. Notable Quotes: "People are just using [alcohol] to medicate, right? Like, well, screw it. The virus is still here, and it's snowing again. I'm gonna have myself a beverage." "Alcohol causes three out of four of those genetic mutations. Scary, right?" "If there's anything you can do to prevent from ever needing cancer or chemotherapy, I want to be in your corner helping coach you through that process." "Be safe, everybody. Okay? So these different patterns of alcohol drinking may have different effects on breast cancer." "One beverage a day raises your risk 200%. Say it again. Have a beverage on a holiday. Have a beverage once a month." Resources: PubMed - Source of numerous studies including data on alcohol and cancer. #96 - Today's is two sisters, shooting the shit in the best way. Chandice and I sat down for what started as a casual catch-up and turned into a raw, hilarious, and surprisingly deep conversation about body image, confidence, sobriety, mocktails, childhood memories, and even bikini breakthroughs. She shares her memories outdoors and hunting with our Dad. Her mocktail recipes for gameday and 3 camping recipes that her family always goes back to for camping at the lake. This may be the episode to send to the women in your life or listen and learn. Aside from being my sister, Chandice Probst is the bubbly personality behind both This Vivacious Life and Holiday Food and Fun and COO & Sponsorship Director of Tastemaker Conference. My guest this week is Deb from Kentucky – aka Mocktail Mom This was her second time on the show - click here to listen to the first interview In this episode:- Deb quit drinking on December 31, 2020. She originally took a break to evaluate her drinking and felt so good she just kept going! Deb was a Late Starter and only started drinking heavily in her 40s during after her divorce. Like many of us she was a Gray Area Drinker: She often found herself drinking more than she had intended, particularly when she was alone on weekends without her kids. Debs Turning Point: came when she realized that alcohol was taking up too much mental space I loved her analogy of the ticker tape of breaking news that we see on tv – Deb felt she had an alcohol related ticker tape constantly turning in the background of her mind! She joined a sobriety challenge in January 2021 and community did the trick It was a breakthrough for Deb when she finally accepted that moderation wasn't working for her Like many of us she discovered it was easier to stop completely altogether than to try to control it. This is because alcohol changes our brain chemistry – once we have crossed the line into dependence just one drink can trigger intense cravings I wish someone had explained that to me before I spent 10 long years trying (and failing) to control my drinking! Deb's Top 3 Benefits of Sobriety: Freedom from ticker tape mental chatter about alcohol. No more waking up with guilt and shame. Confidence and trust in herself (she gave that example of being able to collect her daughters if they called her in the evening.) Mocktail Mom Platform: Deb shares mocktail recipes and alcohol-free fun on Instagram and TikTok. Created a mocktail recipe book: The Happiest Hour. Learn more via her website mocktailmom.com Both Deb and myself are breast cancer survivors. We didn't know about the alcohol-cancer link when we were drinking so are keen to let as many women as possible understand that alcohol is linked to 7 types of cancer Debs Sobriety Advice: Don't think in terms of “forever.” Take it one day or one event at a time. Don't worry about future events (e.g., weddings or trips). Celebrate any alcohol-free progress; it all adds up. Her last tip was to get support—having a community made all the difference for her If you're looking for a community then try Tribe Sober! Don't worry you can have your drink and so can the kids. With so many choices as Disney the kids can feel like they are just like you with those non alcoholic drinks too that are just as fancy as those adult beverages. Tune in this week to find out what the dudes recommend.
We're taking you along on a whirlwind couple of days at Walt Disney World—complete with friends, food, drinks, and a few unexpected twists (including a surprise snake sighting near the Skyliner… yep, that happened). We kicked things off with snacks and sips at Bar Riva to see some Cast Member friends alongside our good friends Lucie and Caleb, and the fun just kept rolling from there. We did a little shopping in Pandora (yes, we bought rings), used an Individual Lightning Lane for Cosmic Rewind, and bounced around resorts chasing dinner plans from California Grill to Steakhouse 71 to Three Bridges—where we finally found our perfect Plan C, great food, and some awesome cast member interactions. We also squeezed in some magic at Magic Kingdom to ride Haunted Mansion, placed a special hat embroidery order, and spent a rainy afternoon at Disney Springs catching up, indulging in Salt & Straw, and hiding out at Jock Lindsey's. The trip wrapped up with poolside snacks at Siestas, an evening at Dahlia Lounge, and a final stop at Jeff's Bagels on the way home—because you know we weren't leaving without breakfast handled. It was a trip full of laughs, detours, and Disney magic, and we can't wait to share it with you.MEI-Travel – Expertise. Rocco describes the challenges of managing food logistics, including weather considerations, historical data analysis for planning, and balancing inventory to avoid shortages or overbuying. Rocco continued his discussion of catering for the upcoming 4th of July event in Philadelphia, highlighting a shift towards healthier menu options for crew catering. Mentioning how he coordinates 25 food trucks offering diverse cuisines, as well as his own trucks serving popular festival foods. Byzantine Empire Catering and Drunken Hen Eatery and WineryAmarildo "Mo" Boyco and his wife, who have backgrounds in the culinary industry, started the Byzantine Empire Catering Food Truck about seven years ago. The business combines Mediterranean and Latin cuisines, reflecting Amarildo's Albanian heritage and his wife's Colombian background. Recently, they expanded their operations by opening a brick-and-mortar establishment called Drunken Hen Eatery and Winery in Mayfair. Although guests can visit Drunken Hen during regular operating hours, your next event can be catered via Byz Empire Catering as well as the Drunken Hen, with a wide variety of foods to choose from. When Steve Jackson stopped drinking in 2023 he noticed something odd. As much as non-alc drinks have improved over the past twenty years no one was making a zero proof alternative in the premium wine space. He set out to fix that with Society de la Rassi, which offers a high-end drinking and aesthetic experience at 0.5% ABV. Steve sits down with Greg to talk about positioning his product in the market, the process by which the wine is created, and the ongoing discourse around mocktails and low and no alcohol drinks. Why ARE people drinking less anyway? They put their heads together to get to the bottom of it.Plus, major news out of the northeast!
