Even though Martin grew up with loving and involved parents, he couldn't escape the fact that he lived in a drug and crime-infested neighborhood, while his White peers enjoyed life in cleaner, safer neighborhoods. This stark discrepancy resulted in Martin internalizing feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. These dark emotions led him to make poor decisions like stealing cars and robbing stores. After a two-year stint in prison, Martin re-entered society and began working, and did a good job of reporting to his parole officer. Unfortunately, this taste of success led him to believe he could manage to bring alcohol back into his life. This decision proved disastrous. On New Year's Eve of 2003, Martin's life was changed forever, when he ran a red light while intoxicated, resulting in the deaths of two people. While incarcerated, Martin learned the individuals he had killed were beloved members of the recovery community. Upon learning this news, Martin made the decision to dedicate the rest of his life to helping others in recovery. Martin has made good on his promise and speaks at drunk driving panels around the country and is a drug and alcohol counselor. His story is deeply moving and inspirational. Nicole's addictive habits began long before she ever took a sip of alcohol or tried drugs. Even as a little girl, she just didn't feel comfortable in her own skin. Growing up with emotionally unavailable parents, she didn't feel she could turn to them when she was first molested as a child and then abused by her boyfriend when she was a teen. She began experimenting with drugs and alcohol but swore up and down that she would never use hard drugs. It didn't take long for Nicole to breeze through these boundaries she thought she could maintain. Before long, she was using and selling hard drugs, stealing, and taking advantage of family members to meet her addiction's needs. Nicole reached her rock bottom when she held a gun to her head and contemplated suicide. She wasn't eating, she wasn't taking care of herself, and she couldn't even stand to look in the mirror at her own reflection. Fate intervened that day as she held that gun to her head and it was then that she made the decision to turn her life around. Nicole is now the proud mom of two beautiful little boys, helps run a successful recovery center in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida, and is soon to walk down the aisle with her fiance. As a kid, when Matt saw his outgoing, uninhibited peers talk to girls or dance like idiots on tabletops, he was jealous. Why couldn't he be like that? Why couldn't he do those things? Why was he so shy and awkward?? Then, he discovered the power of booze. Alcohol put its arm around Matt's shoulder and said, "Actually, buddy, you can do those things. I'm here to help." For the next twenty-plus years, Matt used alcohol to cope with a wide array of emotions and social situations. He drank to bring himself out of his shell, he drank because he was in a rock band and that's what rockstars do, and he drank to tamp down anxiety and fear. After a years-long sober stint ended with a miserable attempt to moderate his drinking, Matt had a heart-to-heart with himself. Was he going to allow for yet another generation of his family to die young because of alcohol, or would the buck stop with him? Candace's parents worked hard to give her an amazing life, but she still struggled in social situations as an introverted only child. When her father passed away suddenly when she was just 20 years old, Candace's drinking escalated. As time went on, she found herself engaging in activities only where alcohol was readily available. If she wasn't able to drink at an event, she simply was not present. She was consumed with the thought of that next drink. One day, Candace was listening to a podcast where Holly Whitaker's book, Quit Like A Woman, was mentioned. Candace had no idea that you could just...stop drinking for the sake of just wanting to try out sobriety. She was always under the assumption that the only people that chose not to drink did so for religious reasons. Could Candace do this? She sure could! Candace now finds joy in hiking, kayaking, and blogging as a happy and healthier sober version of herself. Make sure to read Candace's blog exploringsobriety365.com and listen to her story today! When the people in Todd's life started suggesting he may benefit from AA , Todd calmly explained to them, "I am depressed and crazy, but not an addict." But, funny thing, Todd was constantly drunk and high. After his second mental breakdown and spending time in his local psych hospital, he finally made the decision to enter detox at the behest of a trusted doctor. Unfortunately, Todd ran away from the center and walked to his brother's home the night he arrived at detox. When he returned to his own house, he rationally (ha!) explained to his wife that he could stop drinking on his own, no problem, however, he NEEDED weed in order to function. His wife said sure, you can keep the weed habit up, BUT you're not living here. With nowhere to go except his parents' home, Todd was finally ready to dedicate to detox. He eventually entered a treatment center where he worked to get to the bottom of his addictive behavior. At five years sober, Todd openly admits he still grapples with anxiety, however, life is much more beautiful and calm as a sober person. Athletic, well-spoken, charismatic, successful... you would never have known Luc had a problem with alcohol. But behind Luc's personal successes, he was, in fact, struggling. By creating this outlandish, overly gregarious persona while he drank, he felt internal pressure to play this self-destructive role in all social situations. So...that meant drinking in all social situations. When Luc and his wife decided that having a baby was in their near future, he realized he needed to change his life if he was going to be a good dad. Luc started attending counseling. After only a few sessions, his therapist looked him straight in the eye and told Luc he needed to stop drinking alcohol completely. Luc left the session and cried in his car because he knew in his heart of hearts that what the therapist told him was true. Luc is now over 5 years sober, competes in marathons, and is the proud father of a beautiful daughter that has NEVER seen her dad drink. Listen to Luc's powerful story today! Do you have a parent that struggles with addiction? Rachel, this week's guest, knows exactly what that is like. Rachel grew up in an impoverished community where drugs, alcohol, and teenage pregnancy ran rampant. Even though recognized that drinking was problematic, she got swept up in addictive and self-deprecating behavior after a breakup with a serious boyfriend. After years of binge drinking, her hangover symptoms were becoming more and more severe. Rachel had finally had enough. One day, while nursing yet another horrible hangover, she asked God for help. Rachel knew that when she asked for help from the universe, she was moving in the right direction. She went on to purchase quit lit and healing crystals to help her on her journey to sobriety. She also began the heavy work of exploring the trauma from her childhood. Eventually, Rachel realized that she wanted to help other women going through the same struggles she had gone through. She became a coach through A Sober Girl's Guide and holds weekly support circles where she listens to and validates the experiences of others. Are you or is someone you love in the military? Would you agree that alcohol is a massive problem for many of our servicemen and women? Kenneth, this week's guest, would wholeheartedly agree with you. Even after multiple stints in rehab and spending some time at a homeless shelter, it still took years for Kenneth to admit that he actually had a problem with alcohol. After leaving the military he continued to drink heavily and then, his health took a turn for the worse. His mother looked at her youngest child and asked him what she needed to do to help him because she did not want to bury her son. This conversation snapped Kenneth into recognizing he needed to do better for himself and his family. Kenneth went back to school, earned his Master's degree, studied abroad in South Africa, and wrote a best-selling book titled "The 12 Faces of Sober"! Listen to his story now. To say Dani had a difficult childhood is a gross understatement. She faced years of severe abuse at the hands of her mother's drug-addicted alcoholic boyfriend. At the tender age of 12, Dani discovered alcohol. She was instantly hooked. Drinking numbed the shame, fear, and sadness that permeated every aspect of her life. For the next 28 years, Dani masked every emotion with booze to the point that she had no idea who she was with OR without it. One afternoon her sister-in-law came over and she was just… glowing. She had a clear complexion, she had lost weight, and she seemed just so… present. This did NOT seem like the same woman Dani had partied with over the years. What was she doing to make this change?! “I'm sober,” she told Dani. “There is no way I can give up my wine!” responded Dani.“Just give it a shot for 30 days,” her sister-in-law urged her. So…Dani committed to 30 days. And those 30 days have now expanded into nearly 2 years of sobriety! But finding sobriety was not a walk in the park. After her pink cloud of sobriety bliss popped, Dani had to do the insanely hard work of healing past traumas in order to maintain living an alcohol-free life. Not only has Dani done the work, but she has made it her life's mission to help other people through their sobriety journey. Felicia grew up around her Sicilian and Irish family consuming alcohol during each and every holiday. When she hit high school, Felicia looked around and realized that she was going to participate in the family drinking tradition, too. She began to party hard with friends, making reckless choices and putting herself in dangerous situations. After several years of unhealthy drinking habits, Felicia became pregnant with her daughter. Like so many women, Felicia suffered from postpartum depression after her child was born. She describes the anxiety and depression she experienced as pure hell. Finally, Felicia sought help from her doctor who prescribed her medication, but also told her, no more alcohol. After 60 days without booze, people began to see a shift in Felicia's overall demeanor. She was calm, less reactive. Through a romantic partner, she discovered the AA community which Felicia credits with saving her life. Felicia is now asked to speak at functions where individuals are just starting their sober journey. Megan had been using wine to cope with the stresses of life as a mom of two young kids but when her marriage began to unravel leading to divorce, her drinking got out of hand. One holiday weekend at home, without her kids and no family nearby, Megan once again drank a bottle of wine and passed out. When she awoke at 3 am with night sweats, raging anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, she literally called out for a sign, a message, help, support of any kind to help get her out of this toxic cycle she had created. She got up, opened her email, and discovered she had won a scholarship to participate in an online support group program and she had until the following day to register. With nothing else to lose, Megan jumped on board and has never looked back. After finishing the100 day program, Megan decided to create her OWN sober support group meetings. Emily splits her drinking history into two different realms: college party drinking, and anxious stressed-out working mom drinking. These two chapters of Emily's drinking differ greatly, however, they do have one thing in common: both chapters of Emily's drinking added zero value to her life. In fact, really shitty things happened when she drank. After another slip up of accidentally drinking to excess and making an ass out of herself, Emily woke up to her young daughter crying. Her little girl was worried, confused, and shaken by the belligerent woman she had seen the night before that she couldn't believe was her mom. Looking at the pain in her daughter's eyes, Emily knew she needed to make a change. Listen now to Emily's story and how she stopped drinking and became the best mom and person she could be. When Rachel's six-year-old announced that she had been the one to bandage mommy's knee because mommy fell when she was drunk, Rachel realized a change needed to happen. Rachel has replaced her drinking days with habits and AF substitutes that she calls "multipliers". Instead of the booze subtracting from her life, she now practices daily meditation, follows a spiritual and physical cleansing ritual of drinking hot water and lemon each morning, and experiments with new and fun alcohol-free drinks. All of these practices multiply the joy and love she has for life and helps Rachel to remain the sober, best version of herself. Listen to Rachel's moving and equally hilarious story now.Creator/Host: Emily RobertsHave an inspirational sober story you would like to share? No one in Suzanne's life told her she should stop drinking or that she had a problem with alcohol. But why could she not stop herself from drinking two glasses of wine each night (and not to mention more on the weekends)? Suzanne decided she should probably go to AA, because, at the time, where else did you go if you thought you had a problem with alcohol? Once there, though, she realized it was not a good fit. So, was she an alcoholic, or was she not? She didn't fit into the AA scene, but she wasn't comfortable with her drinking habits. It wasn't until Suzanne started reading Quit Lit and listening to sober podcasts that she realized... Omg, I'm a GRAY AREA DRINKER! There WAS a name for drinkers like her! Through education and working diligently to "rewire" her thinking, Suzanne has been sober for close to a year and a half. Way to GO, Suzanne! I promise you will feel uplifted and connected to Suzanne's sobriety journey. Listen now! Creator/Host: Emily RobertsHave an inspirational sober story you would like to share? Chuck describes himself as the poster boy of high functioning alcoholism. He used drugs and alcohol to get himself through his day to day routine. It wasn't until Chuck was faced with the prospect of a stint in jail after failing his interlock breathalyzer for the second time that he recognized he wasn't going to be able to cheat his way through the system. Chuck now fills a leadership role within a local AA meeting where he mentors individuals mandated to attend meetings. Chuck enjoys a glass of wine here and there with his wife. He has been clean from drugs for 12 years. Way to go, Chuck!
