It's Okay To Start Again - Mental Health EpisodeAt the end of 2025, Maya felt like the year had wrung her out and left her on the floor. She was sitting alone in her car in a grocery store parking lot, hands wrapped around a coffee that had gone lukewarm an hour ago, staring at the dashboard but not really seeing it. Her phone was full of unopened messages: friends checking in, her manager asking about a missed deadline, her mother sending another “Just making sure you're okay” text. She wasn't okay.In the span of twelve months, she had watched a relationship she thought would end in marriage quietly dissolve, lost a job she'd poured herself into, and moved back into a small, echoing apartment that felt more like a storage unit for her disappointment than a home. Every time she opened social media, it seemed like everyone else was posting highlight reels: promotions, engagements, babies, book deals. She felt like the only one stuck on repeat.“I'm so behind,” she whispered to no one in particular, the words fogging up the windshield. The week between Christmas and New Year's stretched in front of her like a hallway she didn't want to walk down. One night, she sat on the floor of her living room, surrounded by half‑unpacked boxes, and opened an old notebook. On the first page, in handwriting that looked a little more hopeful, she saw a list titled: “Goals for 2020.” It was a collage of big dreams—start a business, run a half‑marathon, travel more, learn another language.Almost none of them had happened. The familiar wave of shame rose in her chest: See? You never finish what you start. Something's wrong with you. She almost closed the notebook, but something in her—small and stubborn—stopped her hand. What if, just for one night, she didn't treat this list as a report card? What if she treated it as a love letter from a younger version of herself who believed in her?Maya picked up a pen and wrote, in darker ink across the top of the page:“Begin again.”She drew a line down the middle of the paper. On the left, she wrote “Things that ended in 2025.” On the right, “Seeds I'm carrying into 2026.” Under “things that ended,” she let herself name them: the relationship, the job, the version of herself who pretended everything was fine to keep the peace. There were tears as she wrote, but there was also relief in acknowledging that some chapters had truly closed. She realized that even in a year that felt like wreckage, seeds had been planted. She'd taken a free online course in the evenings about content creation. She'd started sharing small posts about resilience and healing, just for herself, with a handful of followers who would quietly message, “I needed this.” She'd gone on evening walks to clear her head and noticed that, even on the hardest days, she always felt a little more like herself after twenty minutes under the sky. They weren't big achievements. They were gentle threads. But they were real.On New Year's Eve, instead of going out, Maya lit a candle on her kitchen counter and made herself a simple dinner. The apartment was still cluttered, and there were still unanswered emails and bills she didn't know how she'd pay yet. Nothing external had magically fixed itself. But at 11:50 p.m., she did something different. She pulled out another blank page and wrote one sentence at the top:“In 2026, I will start small and start honestly.”She chose three tiny beginnings—so small they almost felt silly.Ten minutes each morning without her phone, just breathing, journaling, or looking out the window. One honest conversation a week, where she told the truth instead of saying “I'm fine.”One piece of creative work posted every week, whether or not she thought it was perfect. How to connect with AgileDad:- [website] https://www.agiledad.com/- [instagram] https://www.instagram.com/agile_coach/- [facebook] https://www.facebook.com/RealAgileDad/- [Linkedin] https://www.linkedin.com/in/leehenson/

On New Year's Day 2020, Adam Tendler unexpectedly received his father's final gift: a wad of cash stuffed into a manila envelope handed over in the parking lot of a Denny's restaurant in West Lebanon, NH. The strangely furtive exchange launched a musical journey.Tendler, a renowned concert pianist who grew up in Barre decided to use his inheritance to commission an all-star cast of modern composers to compose piano pieces exploring the theme of inheritance. In his pitch to his composer friends, Tendler wrote that he wanted “to plant that cash in the soil of something that may actually grow and — if you'll forgive me — live on.” To his amazement, every composer he wrote to agreed to contribute. The result is a critically acclaimed album and concert tour called Inheritances, which the New York Times has called a collection of “little masterpieces.” Tendler will perform Inheritances at the Barre Opera House on November 16.Tendler initially did not know what to do with the money that he received. Taking a trip or paying down a credit card seemed inadequate. “This is an inheritance so something should be done with it that sort of honors the gesture,” he told The Vermont Conversation. “The thing I do for a living is ideally creating experiences for people … which [are] cathartic and beautiful and [provide] a sense of connection,” he said. “What if I use it to facilitate that experience for people?” Tendler originally told his story in a 2023 essay for the New York Times, “My Father's Death, An Envelope of Cash, A Legacy in Music.”Adam Tendler is a Grammy-nominated pianist and a recipient of the Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists and the Yvar Mikhashoff Prize. The Minneapolis Star Tribune called him "currently the hottest pianist on the American contemporary classical scene." After graduating from Indiana University, Tendler performed solo recitals in all fifty states as part of a grassroots tour he called America 88x50. He has appeared as soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, LA Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony and at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and other venues. He is on the piano faculty of the Steinhardt School at New York University. Tendler took a circuitous route from Barre to the concert stages of the world. After college, he worked at the landfill in Coventry and was a substitute teacher at U32 and Twinfield high schools. His relationship to his hometown is both affectionate and ambivalent. “I love Barre, I love Vermont, but it wasn't really the most easy place to grow up as a queer kid,” he recalled. “Music was a safety hatch … a real place within which I could hide, protect myself, express myself. I created a little fortress within it.""That vessel motivated me to actually start to really train to the point of getting into conservatory.”Tendler said that his work on Inheritances transformed his complicated feelings about his “semi-estranged” father “into something that feels like a companion in a good way.”“This project and having to sort of confront him on a human level, even though we're talking about music, has brought me back to him. I am my father's son. We are family.”

In this weeks episode of Sober Stories from Everyday People I chat with Kellie in Hong Kong. Kellie is an Australian living in Hong Kong, a fitness lover, newly married, and mum to a daughter and step-son. I first met Kellie several years ago at a retreat called Phuket Cleanse in late 2017, which sparked years of sober curiosity for both of us. Although Kellie's drinking wasn't especially heavy, alcohol felt like it had a hold on her—even when she could moderate or go weeks and months without it. On New Year's Day this year, Kellie stopped trying to moderate and chose full sobriety. At 9.5 months sober at the time of recording, Kellie shares how making alcohol a “non-event” unlocked a profound sense of freedom, focus, and motivation. This episode explores expat social pressures in Hong Kong, building an alcohol-free marriage, showing up fully for family, and the fitness routines and a passion for her career that reinforced her decision—offering a powerful reminder that you don't need a dramatic rock bottom to choose a better life. You can connect with Kellie on instagram at @sunshinejoy29. On this edition of Madison BookBeat, host Sara Batkie talks with author Pernille Ipsen about the new translation of her memoir, My Seven Mothers (University of Minnesota Press.) On New Year's Eve in Copenhagen in 1972, seven women had a child together: one gave birth and six others attended. They had met a year earlier at a feminist women's camp on a small island and now, with about twenty other women's liberationists, they occupied three dilapidated apartment buildings in the center of Copenhagen. One became the country's first Women's House, the nerve center of the Women's Movement in Denmark, and the other two were women-only communal living spaces that were Pernille Ipsen's first home. In this intimate portrait of life during the exhilarating early days of women's liberation in Scandinavia and dramatic social change around the globe, she tells the stories of these seven women, her seven mothers. Recounting her mothers' history—from the passions and beliefs they shared to the political divisions over sexual identity that ultimately split them apart—Ipsen captures the individuality of each of her mothers as well as the common experiences that drew them together. As she deftly reflects the practical and emotional realities of her mothers' women-centered life, Ipsen presents an engrossing picture of intersecting lives that, half a century ago, raised questions we still grapple with today: What is a family? Who is a woman? And who gets to decide? A chronicle of gender, sexuality, and feminism as it was constructed, contested, and lived, My Seven Mothers is an eye-opening account of the challenges and possibilities connected with liberation and radical social change during the 1970s. In this time of fierce struggles over family, sexuality, and child-rearing, it reminds us that new worlds are always possible. Pernille Ipsen was professor of gender and women's studies and history at the University of Wisconsin–Madison for fifteen years and is now a full-time writer. The Danish-language version of this book, Et åbent øjeblik (An open moment), was published in 2020 and was awarded the Montana Prize for literature, one of Denmark's top literary prizes.

On New Year's Eve 1989, Mansfield, Ohio was rocked by the disappearance of Noreen Boyle. Her husband, prominent neurosurgeon Dr. John Boyle, insisted she had walked out after an argument. But Noreen's son, 11-year-old Collier, told a very different story—a scream in the night, suspicious behavior from his father, and threats to stay silent. When investigators dug deeper—literally—they uncovered the truth buried beneath the floor of Boyle's new home in Pennsylvania. Forensic science, from dental records to a Rolex watch frozen in time, dismantled Boyle's lies and secured his conviction. This case became one of the most publicized trials in Ohio history, second only to Sam Sheppard. It's a story of hidden abuse, the power of forensic evidence, and the extraordinary courage of a child who refused to be silenced. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

By request from Chris & Val of the Cavern Club, we're playing "Searchin'"  by The Coasters! It's a Table-Topper and a Goofy Great with an oompah beat and an amazing vocal performance by Billy Guy - what else do you want? On New Year's Day 1962, The Beatles recorded a version that wasn't released for years and that's because it stinks! Isn't the story that they honed their sound in the dirty clubs of Germany? They musta had too much NYE grog because you can't hear it here ... Next up is The Hollies who do a decent British Invasion verzh but it doesn't have the fairy dust it needs. Back to the States for Dick Dale's "Surfin'" - yes it's an adaptation but it doesn't really shoot the curl. Paul Revere & The Raiders's rendition leaves out the Mountie which might be a statement? Neal Ford & The Fanatics offer a subdued take that goes double-time, "Shout"-style at the end. Is 7 the lucky number? No! It's a 1968 (shudder!) track by The Tow-Away Zone and the best thing about them is the name ... stick to the original!!!

On New Year's Day in 1962, a four-man band from Liverpool arrived at Decca Records in London to record a demo tape. The band's 15-song audition was apparently underwhelming: The Beatles were rejected from the label in favour of a group called Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. The audition tapes, too, were soon forgotten, aside from some incomplete bootlegs that circulated among die-hard fans and five songs released on the 1995 compilation album Anthology 1. So when Rob Frith, the owner of Neptoon Records in Vancouver, and the man we interview today, brought a tape labeled “Beatles '60s demos” to his friend's studio on a whim, he didn't know the value of what he possessed. Impossible Way of Life is created by musicians, for musicians—diving deep into the grind, the glory, and the gritty truth of life in the music world. RE 507: Why the First 30 Days Can be Rough

Episode 507 - Why the First 30 Days Can be Rough   Today we have Jason. He is 56 years old and from Minneapolis, MN. He took his last drink on December 31st, 2021.   Sponsors for this episode:   Better Help  - code ELEVATOR for 10% off of your first month   [01:06] Intro:   In today's episode you are going to hear Jason say that he doesn't identify as an alcoholic. How many alcoholics do you think have been interviewed on the podcast? Paul says the answer is zero.   Zero because whenever people hear the word alcoholic, the first things that come to mind are homeless, living under a bridge, brown paper bag. Zero guests have fit this description.   Studies show that only 5% of alcoholics are actually homeless, living under a bridge, etc. However we are all walking the same path regardless of how far it takes us.   It's never too late to get help, and we've got your back. The real villain here is alcohol, not the addict. In 2024, you can be alcohol-free, you can be sober, you can be sober curious, you can be an alcoholic in recovery. At the end of the day it's all about getting honest with yourself.   [04:16] More thoughts from Paul:   Drinking can be challenging in the first 30 days. Paul shares with us a piece about this that uses an analogy comparing our brain and neurotransmitters to toy boxes and toys.   During recovery, our brain is resetting itelf now that the alcohol is halted. This will take time. A couple of week to a couple of months. Go slow, be kind to yourself and let the body heal. Your part is not drinking, and the universe solves the other part which is time.   [07:36] Paul introduces Jason:   Jason has lived in Minnesota all of his lfe, currently in Minneapolis. He is married with two sons, 14 and 12. He works in sales. Jason says for fun, he is getting into golf and he is a pilot who enjoys flying for fun as well as for business.   Jason says he had his first drink as a junior in high school. It wasn't a remarkable event but he ended up becoming a typical drinker: parties and weekends, etc. He got married when he was 21 to his first wife, and she did not drink. Therefore Jason didn't drink much during his 20s. The company he worked in sales for, had a big drinking culture that Jason started to get more involved in. Around the same time his marriage wasn't working out and he found himself divorced and drinking more often afterwards. At the time it didn't feel out of control although in hindsight Jason feels it was excessive – almost daily and every weekend complete with hangovers.   In his 40s Jason met his current wife who is a social drinker. His drinking continued, but he did begin to question it. He began to try a lot of methods of moderations, some of them worked for him but it became exhausting after doing it for about five years. On December 17th of 2021, he had decided he was going to quit. He says he drank a lot for the first week or so after that as a reminder to himself of how bad it was.   On New Year's Eve, Jason had two beers and ended up dumping out half of his third. He was done. Jason said the first month went well and the biggest thing he missed was having something to look forward to. Once he made the decision it wasn't that hard for Jason.   Jason shares that he read a lot and listened to podcasts which really helped him. He mentions the book Almost Alcoholic which helped him identify that he was in the middle ground with his drinking.  Jason has had no desire to return to drinking and his cravings were few and far between over the last nearly three years. Going forward, Jason wants to find more hobbies and things he enjoys doing with his kids. He enjoys the subtle calm that is in his life now.   Jason's parting piece of guidance: you don't have to identify as an alcoholic for quitting to be the best option for you.   Recovery Elevator We took the elevator down, we got to take the stairs back up.
