Karim Said is a pianist, conductor and Jordan's new Performing Arts Institute Director of Music. He founded the Amman Chamber Orchestra in 2018. I met Karim few years ago where we had a discussion over one of my podcast series and he had something to tell me about the secularity of Bach's Music. This episode was a learning experience for me as Karim has a wealth of knowledge to share with listeners and people who are keen to learn about Music. He talks about Schoenberg, Enescu, Bach, John Dowland, Bernstein and much more... It was an array of Musical experiences this recording with Karim. https://karimsaid.com/page?2 Karim's Latest CD will be released on the 31st of May 2024. https://rubiconclassics.com/ Recommended Listening Links and List https://open.spotify.com/track/3nKR1TVh3EXRXePUKv2V2v?si=bf1b57b11f4243f https://open.spotify.com/track/7ot3EU1cxdDTk8TWCXpBJg?si=0accc66a29cb487f https://open.spotify.com/track/16AYgiFDGrEZtGBOAAtFwz? si=f8d3fc3d6d8e4c76 https://youtu.be/MB28oIlnQdQ?si=1GEJFhE85T1oIhgp https://youtu.be/qvpBtMCdlEQ?si=yNXE5P9oLQWtVbDx https://youtu.be/mBbPkU6qFH0?si=N5Uj3psTYfu0EI8h To listen to the complete list from Glenn Gould's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvpBtMCdlEQ&list=PL8WKooOccbd5yUoDuVXt8YeKRzkH_2vJL Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Francaise - Igor Markevitch (1955) https://www.discogs.com/release/7665422-Igor-Stravinsky-Orchestre-National-de-la-Radiodiffusion-France-Igor-Markevitch-Pulcinella-Le-Baiser-/image/SW1hZ2U6MjA1MTcxOTU= https://youtu.be/55syhGxxUyQ?si=WUcAjumZ67wg1-27 https://youtu.be/Oe2fRnu64rU?si=hBZ7ujhKjPextkQJ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4EmIPY8yqY) https://open.spotify.com/album/1UOVzeYjNgEyEQzIRiRAIT? si=zUFU8rXMTcqQrVlilhFCyg https://youtu.be/5M6XwTJgCmk?si=8EYeD-z36LJzt25L https://www.discogs.com/release/7665422-Igor-Stravinsky- Orchestre-National-de-la-Radiodiffusion-France-Igor-Markevitch-Pulcinella-Le-Baiser-/image/SW1hZ2U6MjA1MTcxOTU= --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/laradarwazah/message

In this episode I interview Archaeologist/History Teacher Kariman Mango and together we explore Cairo's roaring 1920's - The limelight is placed on two main singers; Naimah il Masriah and Mounira il Mahdiah. Kariman gives an elaborate historical and political account of the time focusing on the women's feminist movement. We attempt to discover if these women were true artists or simply entertainers. We also delve into whether we should romanticize Cairo's extravagant 1920's or do we place these women in the right context and express the difficult circumstances they lived through. How has Ziad Rahbani been influenced by the music and personality of Sayed Darwish? Can those listeners who don't agree with him put aside his political views and just enjoy his compositions for what they are? Ziad Rahbani has contributed in more than one way to our contemporary Arabic Music library .. His style of compositions have incorporated the old Rahbani school but also he was able to venture into his own Jazz style of compositions. Songs that the young and old could relate to and love.. I hope you can listen to the podcast and offer feedback! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/laradarwazah/message
Discovering the compositions of Sayed Darwish has been a pure pleasure and something very educational. An iconic/beginning of the last century Egyptian composer that lived an interesting life both in politics and love.. He revolutionised Arabic music in that he expressed the yearnings of the masses and managed to blend Egyptian folkloric music with Western instruments and harmony. He also wrote new compositions to the old Arabic Muashahat (lyric Arabic classical poetry). This is the last episode to a four episode short series on this great singer/artist. How are we still connected to Um Kalthoum? In this final one, I explore the intricate political canvas that Um Kalthoum was part of, during Egypt's 1960's. She sang nationalist songs, not just for Egypt but for Palestine as well. How can we relate to these nationalistic and politically charged songs now a days when so much has changed. Songs, Links and References Used: Salou Qalbi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hjuo... In this episode I look into Um Kulthum's style of singing and how she induced a state of Tarab in her listeners. Her repetitions, improvisations and heart felt singing intoxicated her listeners. Egypt was the first Arab country to have witnessed an active feminist liberal movement - this was all part of the 1919 revolution. Um Kulthum, through her art, voice and personality embodied independency and power.. This episode is an exploration on the similarities between Early Western Music and Islamic Culture. The 800 year Moslem occupation on Spain left a huge mark on European Music, Orchestra and even way of life. In the narration, I discuss this influence and go deeper to talk about the Virgin Mary in both religion and the section in the Quran where her story is narrated and held in the highest forms.. I also draw similarities in the way the Mary has been respected, depicted and her sanctity in Western Music.. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/laradarwazah/message
