Welcome to Season 4 of Conversations with Musicians, with Leah Roseman. For this first episode in 2024, I welcome the violinist, author and coach Jennifer Roig-Francoli. We talk about her newly released book, Make Great Music with Ease!: The Secret to Smarter Practice, Confident Performance, and Living a Happier Life, and her Art of Freedom Method which incorporates the mind-body skills of the Alexander Technique. This episode also features excerpts from her solo violin album, Solo Con Spirito, with music of Kreisler, Enescu and Bach. Jennifer had the opportunity to study with Nathan Milstein, Josef Gingold and Stanley Ritchie and has had an interesting career as a performer, including with Appollo's Fire. We talk about performing barefoot at Carnegie Hall, travels to India, and in Jennifer's words” how you do one thing is how you do everything”. I myself have been very influenced by different mind-body practices like the Alexander Technique, and the power of thought to help me address habitual tensions in my own life has really helped me, and I trust this inspiring and helpful episode will be of help to you, both musical performers and not, because the content of this discussion addresses universal challenges for all of us. This conversation is punctuated by some excerpts from Jennifer's solo album, and I hope you'll listen to the whole album which you'll find both on streaming services, or better yet for purchase on her website: https://artoffreedom.me/meet-jennifer/ Like all my episodes, you can watch this on my YouTube channel or listen to the podcast, and I've also linked the transcript to my website: https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/jennifer-roig-francoli Here you can sign up for my weekly newsletter to get access to Sneak Peeks for upcoming episodes: https://mailchi.mp/ebed4a237788/podcast-newsletter I have had several interviews talking about some of the same issues as this episode.
Violinist Carolin Widmann covers 1000 years of repertoire in her latest album, L'Aurore, including works by Hildegard von Bingen, J.S. Bach, Ysaye, Enescu and George Benjamin. She speaks to online editor Davina Shum about what all these pieces have in common, including finding freedom within the form with such diversity of pieces. Carolin speaks about the importance of singing in achieving free, musical communication, and how the different ways composers use musical notation can achieve surprisingly similar results. Synopsis In Bucharest on today's date in the year 1903, a 21-year-old Romanian composer named Georges Enescu conducted the premiere of two “Romanian Rhapsodies” he had written. These flashy orchestra showpieces quickly became his most popular works – a little to the composer's later chagrin. He came to feel – and quite rightly – that the huge success of these toe-tappers had come to overshadow all his other compositions and accomplishments. Enescu had good reason to be proud: In addition to being a fine composer and conductor, he was one of the great virtuoso violinists of his day. As both a conductor and violinist he appeared with most of the great orchestras of Europe and America. Enescu wrote impressive symphonies, chamber music, and even an opera based on the Greek legend of Oedipus. As a teacher and general musical mentor, Enescu could count the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin as one of his star pupils and most devoted admirers. Enescu died in Paris in 1955. Even though he had severed relations with his now Communist homeland, the Romanian government revered him as their great national composer: His native village, a street in Bucharest, and the State Philharmonic were all renamed in his honor. Authors: Irina Botea Bucan & Jon Dean, 2021. A sonic portrait of Tescani through assembling all of the “da” sounds from our daily conversations and informal interviews facilitated during our residency period. The sound translates indistinctively as both an affirmation (da = yes) and doubt (da' is the shortcut sound for dar = but). In the context of Tescani (both village and George Enescu residency) two distinct temporalities co-exist: that of the short and temporary visits of invited artists alongside the repetitive working cycles of the local inhabitants; witnessed in the crops growing underneath high voltage electricity poles. All of these actions are situated in the vicinity of Tristan Tzara's birthplace. Oedaadaao is a title without registered meaning or definition… the choice of these letters represents the ongoing journey through Enescu's Oedipus and Tzara's sound poetry both of which have their origins within the local area. Sound piece created during the SONIC FUTURE RESIDENCIES organized by Asociația Jumătatea plină and SEMI SILENT at the George Enescu National Museum in Tescani Village, Bacău County, Romania in September 2021.
Conservation Conversation. A Sound Essay Author: La Pesch, 2021 (English, German, Romanian, Ukrainian) How to approach a new place? And what to take home from it? The rural area of Tescani in Romanian Moldavia is characterized by reverberating sounds waving between hills, farming, and plenty of dogs of course. Up the hill on the edge of the village lies a small museum in honor of the Romanian composer George Enescu. A mansion with its own little forest. But the grandeur of the past shows cracks. Humidity sneaks up the walls. Red, aristocratic patterned carpet hosts historic notes, furniture, and instruments. Mice ate the hammer felt of the piano – the piano on which Enescu finished his opera Oedipe. Today it is untouchable. Packs of visitors come in coaches, have a quick look, bath in some mellow notes, and climb their vehicle again to take off. What is conserved along the way? The piece follows, questions, deconstructs, and reconstructs the process of conservation. It starts a conversation with the ghosts of the past. Open exploration, improvisation, and coincidences play a major role in the piece as most of it is composed by movement in space on-location and not by layering tracks. It drifts intuitively between scenes, thoughts, and impressions. Essayistically, it weaves together reoccurring themes in a meandering way that invites listeners to get lost in the imagination of a place. Sound piece created during the SONIC FUTURE RESIDENCIES organized by Asociația Jumătatea plină and SEMI SILENT at the George Enescu National Museum in Tescani Village, Bacău County, Romania in September 2021. They oscillate between narrative and purely sound-based with strong fascination for the thin borderline between fiction and reality. Often she uses spoken word that transcends sentences and syntax and reaches a pure atmosphere or emotional quality. She chooses a subjective approach towards the world and sets in scene encounters creating contact points in dialogue. Ved. Domantas Razauskas

Violinist Lea Hausmann, cellist Samuel Shepherd, and pianist Mengjie Han of the Amatis Piano Trio join us to chat about scoping out chamber partners at international competitions, navigating multiple nationalities in one small ensemble, using the internet to cultivate and sustain audiences on the way to securing concerts each season, stimulating artistic growth with dialogue between performers and composers, developing innovative cross-genre and interdisciplinary projects, and the importance of reconnecting listeners with the lost wonder of youth and the human aspect of music. The Amatis Piano Trio was founded in 2014 by German violinist Lea Hausmann, British cellist Samuel Shepherd, and Dutch/Chinese pianist Mengjie Han. The three musicians met in Amsterdam, and have performed together in 33 countries around the world. The piano trio is one of the leading ensembles of its generation, exalted worldwide for their energy, insight, communication and passion. Only weeks after their formation the trio won the Audience Prize at the Grachtenfestival-Concours hosted by the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and First Prize at the International Parkhouse Award at Wigmore Hall in London, both venues that now invite them as regular artists. The 2018-19 season saw the trio selected as ECHO Rising Stars (European Concert Hall Organisation). From 2016 to 2018, the Amatis Trio was part of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists and in 2018 they were invited to participate in the Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland. Amatis Trio released their debut CD on cAVI Records featuring the music of Enescu, Ravel and Britten. The disc received high praise amongst critics and earned the ensemble's inclusion in the Gramophone Magazine's 'One to Watch'. The transcript for this episode can be found here.

Să-i invocăm fără să-i cunoaștem cu adevărat, fără să-i ascultăm sau (re)citim..
Bravissimo.
