J. Robbins legacy in the punk/indie rock world was cemented years ago. As the driving creative force behind Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels and Office of Future Plans as well as the producer of some of the best records of the early aughts including classics by Jets to Brazil, The Dismemberment Plans, Shiner and The Promise Ring, he has left an indelible mark on the guitar-driven rock of the past thirty+ years. His second solo outing leans more heavily into keyboards than he ever has before but the results are no less impactful. The record is eleven songs of exactly the musical quality and lyrical smarts that we have all come to expect from the man. While still nowhere near the sound of classic Sabbath, “Tyr" is the closest we've been since "The Mob Rules." If nothing else, the 1990 sound of the band was unique from what other guitar driven bands were doing at the time. It's not the Pixies or Jane's Addiction or Bad Brains or Alice in Chains and it's certainly not Cannibal Corpse, each of whom released significant records that same year. What it is is a band that sounds fully in belief of the music that they're making and along with Bathory's “Hammerheart,” also released in 1990, it could be argued that “Tyr” helps invent Viking Metal (for better or worse). Max Cavalera has been audibly pissed since the 1985 release of Sepultura's debut EP “Bestial Devastation” (and probably before). His mood has not improved in the years since. From Nailbomb to Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy to Killer Be Killed, every project the Brazilian guitarist/songwriter/shouter has been involved with has loudly had more than its fair share of vitriol. Maybe forming a band with his son would calm the 54 year old. Maybe, but then they opted to call the project Go Ahead and Die and write songs called “Truckload of Bodies.” I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Same old Discharge loving Max. The first Motörhead release without Fast Eddie Clarke and the only to include his replacement, ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson could have been a disaster. Instead, it's Another Perfect Day. Lemmy's rasp and bass roar remain in tack as does Filthy Phil's frenetic pounding, and while Fast Eddie's speedy riffing is missed, in it's place are Robertson's newly welcomed guitar melodies that add another dimension to the ferocity of the patented Motörhead sound. The band would soon return to their meat and potatoes approach but the outlier that is APD remains a bright stop in their glorious catalog. We want more visualization; we want more immediate action steps.”“You want someone double checking that work and making sure anything that's related to AI still has that human element.”“This probably isn't a popular opinion, but I believe on an organizational chart, the chief marketing officer should be above the CEO because marketing truly feeds into everything.”“I think the most important part of a leadership role is that you help shape people's lives in ways that are far beyond the nine to five.”“Generational dynamics is something I study because I'm so fascinated by what a group's formative years can do to help them approach life.”“This newest generation really wants to be a part of something that matters, and they're willing to sacrifice – in ways that I haven't seen before – money or opportunity to be a part of something they really care about.”Recommended Listening and ReadingThe Answers are in the Room podcast with Barbara RapaportTraction by Gino WickmanConnect with Sarah AbelSarah Abel on LinkedInTR Data Strategy

Buzzcocks first three proper studio albums, released from 1977-'81, are all very good but nothing released by the band (or really any other band) before or since can touch their 1979 singles compilation. The San Jose, California Doom Metal practitioners have never shied away from their devotion to Black Sabbath (they have a song called “Giza Butler” for god's sake), and while the Birmingham legends influence looms large over the the trios sound, unlike many of their peers, Sleep are wholly unique. There is an atmosphere that Al Cicneros, Mike Pike and Chris Hakius are able to create that has always set them apart. That originality is nowhere more evident than on the 63 minute title track that makes up the foundation of their third LP. DRI, Corrosion of Conformity, Agnostic Front & Suicidal Tendencies are heralded as masters of the sound and each put out classic albums in the mid '80's. One band rarely mentioned among these titans is San Francisco's Attitude Adjustment who's 1986 debut is as powerful and kick ass as anything released by their better known contemporaries. 1987 was a watershed year for Hip Hop. It saw the debut albums from Ice-T, NWA & the Posse, Boogie Down Productions and Eric B & Rakim. All are certifiable classics but it was Public Enemy's debut that was sonically the most adventurous. The beeps and wails of the Bomb Squads production coupled with Chuck D's booming baritone and Flavor Flav's enticing prompts was unlike anything that had come before (or anything since). The militant stance projected in the Black Panther inspired cover photo wasn't wholly present in Chuck's lyrics yet (that would come fully formed on their sophomore LP a year later) but all the pieces were in place to make PE one of the most important acts in the genres history. Living Colour were (are?) a capital “R” rock band without the benefit (or hinderance) of any of the sub-genre designations assigned to many of their peers. Songs like “Desperate People” and the massive hit “Cult of Personality” had driving, high-energy verses and soaring, singable chorus' that were primed for drive time radio. What separated them from those peers were their insane, Berklee level chops and the fact that they were four African Americans who wrote songs about real life challenges including racial stereotypes, the damages of gentrification and the crack epidemic. Their debut album was groundbreaking upon its release in 1988 but how does it hold up today? The Cure's third long player doubles down on the despair that began with 1980's “Seventeen Seconds” and would culminate on 1982's “Pornography.” Of the three “Faith” feels the most personal to singer songwriter Robert Smith as the increasingly personal lyrics detail a world of a drowning man whose doubt of his own faith increases as other voices interrupt his primary colored world seeing all cats turning to grey during the holy hour of a funeral party dedicated to his grandparents passing. Has your business grown to the point where it needs high-level executive expertise, but you aren't big enough that you can afford to hire the right person full time? A “fractional leader” might be a great solution. Today's guest, Ben Wolf, has literally written the book on the concept. And on this edition of The Clarity Advisors Show, Ben and host Ken Trupke discuss the growing trend of fractional leadership and how it can help small and mid-sized businesses get to the next level.Timestamps(00:51): What is fractional leadership?(03:33): What kind of company can use a fractional leader?(06:10): Ben's background.(09:08): Creating a national community of fractional leaders.(12:57): Challenges of fractional leadership.(17:14): Benefits of an outsider's perspective.(18:51): Setting priorities.(23:48): The fractional leadership end game.(28:55): Ben's recommended reading.(31:12): Connecting with Ben.Episode Quotes“In a typical executive's role, especially at a smaller mid-size company, they're probably spending on average about 20 percent of their time on truly executive-level functions. When a fractional executive comes in, what they're doing is essentially taking that 20 percent strategic and executive part and only filling that role.” (Ben)“That's a nice solution to what I call the 'Entrepreneurial Catch-22.' You got big enough to where you need experienced talent, but you can't afford it full-time until you have had the benefit of that person's experience building the company.” (Ben)“We find ourselves focusing 80 to 90 percent on people issues.” (Ben)“When we come in as a COO, we're taking over from someone else who either was or by absence wasn't doing that job. Now we can more effectively drive both strategy and execution for the entire business and make sure everyone's rowing in the right direction.”“If we can't talk about difficult topics and say the hard things, then our clients are not going to be well-served. They're not going to be able to achieve the goals they so desperately want to achieve.”“People typically are becoming fractional executives because they love being fractional executives. It's not because they couldn't get a full-time job. They want the variety of doing multiple businesses, learning about multiple companies, learning new skills, making massive change.” Recommended Listening and ReadingWin Win Podcast hosted by Ben WolfFractional Leadership: Landing Executive Talent You Thought Was Out of Reach by Ben WolfFierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work and in Life One Conversation at a Time by Susan ScottWho Not How: The Formula to Achieve Bigger Goals Through Accelerating Teamwork by Dan Sullivan with Dr. Benjamin Hardy Follow/Connect with Ben WolfWolfsEdgeIntegrators.comFractionalLeadership.ioBen Wolf on LinkedIn
We're listening to Before Me, journalist Lisa Phu's exploration of her mother's journey fleeing her home in Cambodia, spending 6 years protecting her family in Vietnam, and ultimately resettling in America as a single parent. We think you'll find this new podcast series from Self Evident Media to be a rich, intimate, and recognizable testament to refugee and diaspora families. We're proud to share episode 1 of Before Me, "Firstborn". Here's the description: --- I've never known my mom's first daughter, Ah Lee. I remember writing a story when I was six or seven, about meeting her on a magic carpet ride. And for my whole life, I'd always know that there was so much I didn't know about my family's past. But I never asked my mom the most basic questions about Ah Lee… or anything else that happened when she fled from war, and then genocide, in Cambodia during the 1970s. That changed when I gave birth to my first daughter, Acacia. My mom took time off work, without pay, to fly across the country and visit for three weeks, taking care of her first grandchild so I could take care of myself. Every time I wanted to talk with my mom about her experiences in Cambodia, one of us would find a reason to postpone. But amidst the happy moments and the tense arguments we had during those three weeks, we finally did sit down and turn on a recorder so she could tell me. About her decision to leave home in 1974 when a Khmer Rouge rocket exploded in her family's home, changing their lives forever. About the rising threats of war across Cambodia that pushed her and my dad to seek refuge near the border between Cambodia and Vietnam. And about how she never stopped thinking about the sister I never knew. --- Before Me is a Self Evident Media production. The show's Executive Producers are James Boo, Lisa Phu, and Ken Ikeda. It was created, written and produced by Lisa Phu. Editing by Julia Shu. Fact checking by Harsha Nahata and Tiffany Bui. Sound design by James Boo. Additional support from Cathy Erway. Original theme music by Avery Stewart. Additional music from Blue Dot Sessions. Audio engineering by Dave Waldron and Timothy Lou Ly. Cover art and show name created by Christine Carpenter. Walter Schreifels had Gorilla Biscuits in the '80s, Quicksand in the ‘90s and then Rival Schools in the early aughts. The snowball that is my train of thought is all over the place this week. Why is it I keep starting off by talking about the weather? Of course, this rolls into a little chat about the side effects of having such an active monsoon season, like my yard getting overgrown and the damage on our local tree population. Naturally, this rolls into garden talk and about how it's almost September and that it's been nearly a year with my truck and we're still working on getting things fixed to get it legal in this state. Talk of fixing the truck then turns to why our garage renovations have been delayed and how my wife keeps buying hanging racks for me to install in the garage. With one of those shelf purchases she also bought me my very first KitchenAid stand mixer, which of course gets me talking about pizza and baking cookies. Then the snowball starts rolling back into the garage renovations and about tools for doing it, but that is dependent on getting the truck fixed so I can finish clearing it all out. But first things first, I have to get the back yard cleaned up so I can start planting my fall garden. In a modified "Recommended Listening" segment, I talk about some TV that I've been watching lately including "Harley Quinn" on HBO Max and Letterkenny on Hulu. I've also recently checked out the new podcast from, friend of the show, Paul Csomo, "Avast." If you are familiar with the "Varmints" podcast, imagine that style but talking about pirates. Satan is back! For the second consecutive episode we return to hell for another 80's Thrash classic. This time it's the genre defining Possessed who essentially spawned Death Metal with this record. It's a stone cold classic by any measure but that doesn't mean it's any good in 2022 (try listening to The Joshua Tree today). At the time of its release (in 1985) they could find no flaw in the record but does it hold up 37 years later? Today we're sharing an episode of Home. Made., a podcast that explores the meaning of home and what it can teach us about ourselves and each other. --- When Michael Atkins applied for a job as a teacher's aid, he was offered a position as a part-time custodian. But he took it, because of a promise he made to his daughter: To be the father he never had. Michael proved he had a talent for relating to kids, and he worked his way up to teacher, and eventually, principal. But as he showed up for his school community, he struggled to show up for his family at home. Suddenly, Michael had to figure out how to be present both at home and school…or risk losing it all. --- Listen to episodes of Home. There is an argument to be made that outside of the geographically named baseball bats, Slint's “Spiderland” is the greatest thing to ever come out of Louisville Kentucky. The bands six song LP is not only their high-water mark but it has more than stood the test of time by remaining an incredibly compelling and emotional listen all these decades later as well as being a major influence on the likes of Shellac, Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We gush.
