On this week's episode we are discussing Critical Race Theory in Schools. There is often confusion on what Critical Race Theory (CRT) is and what it would mean for schools. Is CRT correlated to other terms, like “anti-racism” and “social justice,” with which it is often conflated? Or is this the latest ploy in divisive media? Listen to the conversation I have with an educator friend on what CRT means based on our perspectives in school and the long term impact it can have. Our Guest's Bio: Chase-Mitchell, native New Yorker and Classroom Culture co-founder, has worked in the nonprofit sector under the education umbrella in the capacity of director of programs and has taught middle school English for ten years in Northern Virginia.  Ms. Chase-Mitchell is currently a Learning Specialist with an independent school in Washington, D.C., where she implements innovative instructional strategies for students in grades 9-12. In 2015, Meredith co-published a collection of essays and interviews called Why the SUN Rises: the faces and stories of women in education. The book highlights women in education via vibrant photos and honest essays on why they teach. https://www.amazon.com/Why-SUN-Rises-Stories-Education/dp/1504923944 Ms. Chase-Mitchell is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. On this week's episode we are discussing Authentic Allyship with Nicole Vega! Nicole easily became a friend of mine through our mutual love for the Bachelor, but more importantly our shared love for living out our allyship. Being an ally is more of a declaration, it is a way of life, it is solidarity for those who are being marginalized and oppressed. But how do you do that you ask? Well, first you gotta listen to this podcast then you just gotta be about it! (Do not worry we will give you some tips and tricks we have learned along the way!) Our Guest's Bio: Nicole was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and immigrated to the US when she was 4 years old with her parents and sister. Nicole grew up in a multicultural home so early on diversity and inclusion were topics not only her family discussed, but lived them as they were becoming Americans. She worked hard to learn English and strived to feel comfortable in her new home but as a minority, Nicole always felt different and in feeling that way, she would befriend the people who might be experiencing the same. Growing up in the diverse areas of south Florida, over time and with experience and education, Nicole made it a priority to elevate and support people of color and especially the black community. Her allyship journey began in late high school and has grown and grown each year as she learns more about what it's like to dismantle unconscious bias', be anti-racist, and be more self-aware about how her language or actions either support a cause or perpetuate the wrong idea. On this episode, Mia has a transformational conversation with the creative minds of Common Ground. We discuss how it's time for people to get comfortable with those traditionally uncomfortable conversations. You know the ones about race, sexual orientation, politics, privilege... you know the ones that keep many oppressed and stressed! So we came up with a new golden rule: Seek to understand people's different perspective rather than agree. We shouldn't only do life with people who agree with us, rather lets engage with those we disagree with. So how do we do that you ask? Well you gotta disagree with grace my friends! Listen to the episode we give you some tips and tricks based on our experiences. Guests' Bio : Common Ground is a passion project, a collective, a fundraiser, an alliance aimed to protect underrepresented populations through art community & sustainability. Their vision includes embracing differences & working together to rebuild harmony & balance in our communities. Developed by two female, college graduates with a passion for sustainability and social justice— Common Ground was established to encompass a larger threshold of injustices that limit or impact BIPOC, LGBTQ+, & other silenced communities through sustainable clothing and advocacy. To ignore these topics is a privilege and we can no longer sit out of these conversations. Do not forget to subscribe and rate this podcast on Apple Podcast. On the very first episode of Divergent Perspective, my first guest is the woman who gave me life! My mom and I sit down to answer some 'about me' questions that allow y'all to get to know me and also give you a glimpse of why I am a hypocrite. We are all imperfect humans with bias who may not always walk the talk. Example: I went to school to be a teacher because I love the kidsss... but I do not want to work with kids. I say things like 'I love having a diverse group around me.. yada yada yada', then two seconds later say most of my current friends identify as Black. I know, I know... practice what you preach Mia. Well I am here to tell y'all we are all hypocrites, and that is okay! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/divergentperspective/message
