In these times of extreme polarization, leaders must prioritize the development of the skill of engaging in difficult conversations and mastering the art of respectful disagreement. There is a pivotal role these abilities play in fostering effective communication, nurturing healthy relationships, and driving organizational growth. Difficult conversations, whether addressing employee performance issues or navigating conflicting viewpoints among advisors, are inevitable in any leadership role and demand a willingness to navigate them constructively. By honing the ability to respectfully disagree, leaders create an environment where diverse perspectives are valued, leading to richer discussions, enhanced problem-solving, and ultimately, more informed decision-making. Plus, mastering these skills cultivates trust, strengthens team dynamics, and empowers individuals to voice their opinions confidently, fostering a culture of openness and innovation within the organization. In this episode, our guest is Justin Jones Fosu, the CEO of Work Meaningful. Justin brings over two decades of expertise in employee experience and inclusion. His book, "I Respectfully Disagree," offers a refreshing take on conflict management, emphasizing the significance of genuine respect and understanding in difficult conversations. Through his unique framework, Justin encourages individuals and organizations to challenge perspectives, cultivate curiosity, and seek common ground. With a passion for creating respectful environments, Justin's work has significantly impacted leaders and teams, fostering healthier and more productive discussions. His approach not only provides practical tools but also delves into the heart of respectful disagreement, making his insights invaluable for those seeking to enhance their conflict-resolution skills.Justin states that his book is “certainly not making the claim that respect alone can solve the world's biggest problems. But respect on an interpersonal level, in our day-to-day lives, can plant seeds of change in the hearts of those we encounter.”In this episode, you will be able to:understand conflict management and how to give feedback to foster a positive work environment.prioritize compassionate thinking for a happier, more productive team.take a strategic approach to constructive dialogue for professional success.learn how to stay connected to people and enhance teamwork and communication.Get I Respectfully Disagree on Amazon: https://a.co/d/icyhJLp//WHEN YOU'RE READY, HERE'S HOW WE CAN HELP YOU//TAKE THE FREE 5-MINUTE EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT ASSESSMENThttps://turningthecornerllc.com/hr/employee-engagement/assessment/DOWNLOAD A FREE SELF-ASSESSMENT:https://turningthecornerllc.com/free-assessment/SCHEDULE A CALL WITH A HUMAN RESOURCES CONSULTANThttps://turningthecornerllc.com/LISTEN TO OUR PODCASTApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-i-turned-the-corner/id1637875430Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2S4sGuOSeXWXIKY7zMW1p5Google Podcast:https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5wb2RldGl6ZS5jb20vcnNzL05lTUhWV0tSSQiHeart Radio:

Dear Mr. De Niro,I trust you had a wonderful evening at the Oscars. Watching you bask in the comforting embrace of the special people was a reminder of who you really are—a movie star.By the looks of it, the Oscars are back. They have a host now and they gave their top prize to a movie people actually saw. It won a whopping 7 Oscars. There were dance numbers and jokes, beautiful people in their finery—a grand celebration to revive the lifeless body of Hollywood.I was shocked that they kept politics mostly out of it—well, until near the end when Jimmy Kimmel just had to bring in Trump—not just to mock him but to show the country which side all of you are on and to let them know, in no uncertain terms, that they are not invited to this party.Turns out, Trump really did write that:But might I say, Mr. De Niro, none of you seem able to figure out if Trump is such a criminal/fascist/dictator/rapist/racist, why he's kicking Biden's ass in the polls six ways from Sunday? Funny, isn't it, Mr. De Niro? Didn't Bill Maher ask you this same question on Real Time? You didn't have an answer except to say that Trump is a “monster,” a “mean, nasty, and hateful person.”And that if “We want to live in a world that we want to live and enjoy living in, or live in a nightmare. Vote for Trump, and you'll get the nightmare.”Let me get this straight. You said that you would never play Trump because there is “Nothing redeemable in him.”So, Max Cady in Cape Fear, Al Capone in The Untouchables, and William Hale in Killers of the Flower Moon had redeemable traits? They were all mass murderers, Mr. De Niro, yet you not only delighted in playing those roles but also earned Oscar nominations for two of them. And I'm betting a nice fat paycheck at the end of the day.Al Capone was connected to hundreds of murders, William Hale committed a near-genocide of the Osage people, and Max Cady, well, need we be reminded?Trump is not nice to you, Mr. De Niro. That is true. He isn't very nice to Hollywood or Jimmy Kimmel, or to the establishment. But did it ever occur to you that so many people love him because he isn't one of you? And that your crazy ramblings about him only make his supporters love him even more? You, like Hollywood, like the Democrats, like Bill Maher, have become so disconnected from the lives of Americans that you can't possibly understand why Trump is by far preferable. You seem to think you have the right to tell them what they should want, what they should care about, and that your own personal happiness should be a factor they consider.Have you driven through any of our cities lately? Have you driven down to the border? Have you gone to a grocery store? Have you gone into Walmart only to see everything locked up, from baby formula to batteries to deodorant? Have you driven across America to see what this country is really like?I'm guessing not. Why would you? You go from the film set to your multi-million dollar property, and you turn on MSNBC and CNN and you RAGE RAGE against the man they keep telling you is a dictator and fascist who will never leave office, take Bill Maher off the air, and then hunt you down like you're Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor. I worked a 14-hour shift at the polls last week for Super Tuesday. And every passing week takes us deeper into an election season that is looking more and more like a repeat of 2020. Which makes me think now would be a great time to review an important concept that seems to have been lost in our current cultural climate: And that is the ability to discuss differing opinions in a civil manner. We've forgotten how to respectfully disagree. This skill is of vital importance, not only in discussing politics, but in dealing with anybody who believes differently than you do: friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers. Chances are, you have SOMEBODY in your life with whom you don't see eye-to-eye 100% of the time. So, how should we respond when those differences threaten to divide us? To isolate and alienate us? That's the topic of discussion for this week's episode of Loving Life at Home. So grab your cup of coffee and listen in! How can a nation survive if its citizens see each other as enemies? Two out of three Americans consider civility to be a major problem in our country today. Only 7 percent say it is not a problem at all. It seems we are all fighting to be heard, but no one’s listening. Has our culture lost the art of civility? Tuesday on Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, Dr. Mark Turman, Executive Director of the Denison Forum joins us to share thoughts from an E-book of Dr. Jim Denison's titled, "Respectfully, I Disagree". In this E-book, Dr. Denison offers a path to becoming a people of civility in a season of conflict. Someone asked me over the weekend what my main mantra is, and what their mantra should be. This is my answer. ❤️ Note: the most powerful mantra is the one you chant and keep chanting. The one that helps you keep recognizing the unbroken mantra of Silent-Love that's always, already here. Feel It, feel It, feel It, or hear It, hear It, hear It... hold on to the path you're on because it is your destiny and is leading you to your destiny. You've made it (!!!!), and you'll make it. I Love you, Nik nikki@curlynikki.com ******God is afoot! I'm writing, and working on something BIG (and very useful) for your practice! Former NBA athlete Charles Barkley articulated his dissatisfaction with San Francisco during the NBA All-Star Game's live telecast on Sunday. Throughout TNT's secondary broadcast for the event, Barkley entered a debate pertaining to the locale for the 2024 All-Star game - Indianapolis, where he voiced his thoughts alongside renowned sports figures like Reggie Miller, a former star from the Indiana Pacers, and Draymond Green from Golden State Warriors. Draymond Green initiated the discourse by expressing his dissatisfaction with the icy conditions in Indianapolis during the past weekend. Respectfully addressing Reggie Miller, he opined, 'We deeply admire you, Reggie, but I hope this is the last All-Star [game] in Indiana.' Next, Barkley took the liberty of comparing the Indiana weather to the situation in San Francisco, where Green's team, the Golden State Warriors, calls home. The tone of the conversation took a sharp turn when Barkley put forth a provocative question to Reggie: 'Given a choice between braving the cold or negotiating with the multitude of homeless folks in San Francisco, which would you prefer?' Barkley's punctuating remarks set the stage for a quarrel among the panelists. Candace Parker, a fellow analyst, quickly offered her rebuttal by proclaiming her love for San Francisco. However, Barkley wasn't swayed and dismissively retorted, 'We certainly do not.' He elaborated that the level of safety in the city was in question, implying that it felt unsafe to even roam around there. Uncomfortable with this apparent denigration of his home city, Green contested Barkley's claims by asserting, 'Yes, it is perfectly safe to walk around!' A response to this from Barkley was: 'Maybe it is, if one chooses to don a bulletproof vest'. In the grand panorama of the live broadcast, Barkley seemed conspicuously critical of San Francisco, a departure from the norm. Generally known for taking distinct positions on political matters and targeting either side of the spectrum, he is no stranger to critiquing the Californian city. Barkley's earlier critique of San Francisco became a talking point during Game 4 of the 2022 NBA Finals, contested between the Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks. As a sudden rainstorm in Dallas interrupted the game due to a leaking roof at American Airlines Arena, Barkley bluntly asserted that the situation would be much worse if the precipitation was occurring in San Francisco. He commented, 'Our beautiful city, San Francisco, has its charms, yet the blatant squalor and rampant homelessness need serious attention.' Barkley urged the city officials to clear the streets from what he deemed as 'undesirable elements'. San Francisco's struggles with deep-rooted societal issues, particularly concerning homelessness and drug abuse, have come under magnifying glasses recently, but intensified scrutiny can lead to change. Locals were outraged in November when city officials decided to clean homeless encampments and open-air narcotics bazaars just before several world leaders came to the city for an important international summit. Ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, San Francisco was power-washed to cater to notable dignitaries like Chinese President Xi Xinping. This action accentuated the government's approach to handling the echo of urban decay and homelessness that has often marred the city's reputation. While it is clear that there is criticism and concern, there is also anticipation associated with San Francisco. The city has an upcoming opportunity to glamorize its civic pride as it gears up to host the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend. The main attraction, the All-Star Game, is slated to be held at the Warriors' illustrious Chase Arena. As debates on housing and urban decay continue to ebb and flow, it becomes clear that there is a steep path towards righting the wrongs. As with sports, a city's journey towards renewal requires team spirit and a deep-seated desire to rise above adversity. Voices, powerful and pervasive like those of Charles Barkley's, ensure that the spotlight remains on pressing urban issues. While controversial it may seem, these debates might be the spark that ignites a wave of transformation necessary for the City by the Bay, San Francisco. For Valentine's Day, Dan and Paul take a look at how romantic love is portrayed in Dungeons and Dragons. From NPCs with love-based plot lines to the infamous philter of love, we'll cover ever instance we can think of in D&D in which love plays a part. Love is considered to be both positive and negative, with its virtue representing human kindness, compassion, and affection—"the unselfish, loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another"—and its vice representing a human moral flaw akin to vanity, selfishness, amour-propre, and egotism, potentially leading people into a type of mania, obsessiveness, or codependency. It may also describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, oneself, or animals. In its various forms, love acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts. In the Middle Ages, extracts from nightshades were used as hallucinogens, and to make supposed love potions and flying ointments. Such plants may have included belladonna, angel's trumpets, jimsonweed, black henbane, European scopolia or autumn mandrake, which contain alkaloids (atropine and scopolamine, which are hallucinogenic in higher doses) characterized by a narrow therapeutic index. Some attempts to create love potions have led to overdose or death where the preparations were not standardized for the content of potent compounds. If you don't like nuance, you're gonna hate this episode. If you see everything through a binary, either/or partisan lens, this edition ain't for you. If you think those who don't share your political views are the enemy, just don't bother. For the rest of us... This talk is about the economy. Corey recently posted about the S&P hitting a record high as a way to initiate a conversation about the domestic macro economy. And boy howdy! Some folks just didn't want to hear it. So this is a response to a number of the comments that were shared. The challenge in such threads is to practice the objective of who we are. Can we talk about this issue in a better way? “It's natural to complain about what we didn't get in life instead of remembering what we have." Key Moments 00:57 Reminding employees of support and solutions provided. 03:29 Showing appreciation through listening and communication. 07:26 Respectfully communicate, record feedback, and communicate back for trust and improvement. 09:40 Opinions matter. Communication is essential for positive morale. 12:56 Cockerell Academy and newsletter Resources The Cockerell Academy About Lee Cockerell Mainstreet Leader Let Your Team Know What You've Done For Them When leaders effectively explain the actions taken to address their teams' concerns, it leads to greater trust and appreciation. It starts by actively listening to employees' concerns and ideas. By creating a system to record and address their feedback, you build trust and show that their opinions matter. Leaders need to keep employees informed about the actions taken based on their feedback. Whether it's fixing a leaking water fountain or providing more coat hangers, acknowledging, and addressing their needs is crucial. The natural tendency for individuals is to focus on what they didn't receive rather than appreciating what they have been given. This extends to employees, who may remember what their leaders failed to address, rather than recognizing the efforts made on their behalf. It is important to periodically remind employees of the actions taken to address their concerns and improve working conditions. This acknowledgment serves as a powerful form of validation. It shows that their opinions are valued, and their needs are being actively tended to. While leaders may worry about coming across as boastful, communicating your actions isn't about self-promotion. Instead, it's about showing appreciation, building trust, and making employees feel valued. Creating a 'you said, and we listened' newsletter is one way to detail the feedback received from employees and the actions taken to address their concerns. This not only demonstrates transparency but also shows respect for the employees' viewpoints. Leaders are encouraged to explain the reasons behind decisions, whether they pertain to implementing suggestions or facing constraints. This open communication and genuine transparency cultivate a culture of understanding and mutual respect within the workplace. Understanding and empathizing with the employees' experiences is incredibly important as a leader. Seemingly simple requests such as additional coat hangers for housekeepers or functioning equipment holds major importance in the daily operations. By acknowledging and addressing these concerns, leaders communicate their empathy and dedication to ensuring a conducive work environment. The acknowledgment of these efforts communicates a powerful message—leaders recognize and value the vital contributions of every team member. By being present in the operational environment, leaders can better understand the needs and challenges of their teams. Actively engaging with employees not only provides insights into necessary improvements but also signifies the leaders' commitment to truly understanding and addressing the concerns of the team. Make sure to listen to this episode to hear more about the power of acknowledgment and effective communication.
