In this special summer bonus episode of The Food Professor Podcast, co-Michael interviews Ed Madronich, President of Flat Rock Cellars, recorded live at the Ontario Craft Wineries Conference in Niagara Falls. As part of the podcast's summer series highlighting thought leaders in the Canadian food and beverage industry, this episode delves into Ed's personal and professional journey through the wine industry and the evolution of one of Ontario's most celebrated wineries.Ed shares how a chance trip to France at age 19 sparked his lifelong love for wine—an encounter that led to a career built on passion, community, and a dedication to quality. He reveals the philosophy that drives Flat Rock Cellars: celebrating "place" by making wine that reflects the soil, slope, and unique geography of the 20 Mile Bench in the Niagara Peninsula, while breaking down the traditional, often intimidating barriers to wine appreciation. The conversation encompasses not only terroir and taste, but also strategy, particularly in terms of market access and retail. Ed opens up about his unorthodox but successful approach to distribution, including the brand's strong presence in Costco. He emphasizes relationship-building over aggressive selling and explains how Flat Rock positions itself as a true partner to retail and restaurant buyers. "We don't push product," he says. "We build long-term trust and deliver exceptional value."With a customer-first mindset and a refusal to compromise on quality or authenticity, Flat Rock has earned industry-wide respect. Ed discusses how the brand's low-margin, high-quality model has even challenged global competitors, and how his team constantly works to overdeliver, producing $25 bottles that sommeliers say rival the quality of $50 wines. From label design to customer education, the episode is packed with insights for anyone interested in craft winemaking, retail dynamics, or brand storytelling. Listeners will come away inspired by Ed's down-to-earth leadership and his clear commitment to helping consumers connect with wine, not through pretension, but through joy, passion, and a sense of place. What does it look like to lead with purpose and performance — to stay true to your values while building something that lasts? I so enjoyed talking with fellow @tuckschool alum @Jim_Weber, longtime CEO of @BrooksRunning, for a conversation about leadership, grit, and building a brand rooted in conviction. Jim took the helm at Brooks when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy — and through a relentless focus on purpose, customer obsession, and culture, he helped lead it to become a billion-dollar brand. He did all of this while navigating a personal cancer diagnosis — a chapter that deepened his clarity, his courage, and his belief in the kind of leadership that endures. We also talk about what it's like to work alongside Warren Buffett with the astonishing story of Brooks and @BerkshireHathawayInc, and the mindset required to lead through uncertainty without losing sight of what matters most. If you're a leader looking for clarity, or someone in a season of challenge, this conversation is one you won't want to miss. #running LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/jim-weber-3b996b8 Website: http://www.jimweber.org/Keppler: https://www.kepplerspeakers.com/speakers/jim-weber Book: tinyurl.com/runpurpose

Today on the podcast, I am joined by Andreas Tzortzis, a former journalist who has written for the likes of Newsweek, Monocle, and The New York Times. For the last 15 years, he's worked in brand strategy and storytelling at places like Red Bull and Apple, and for clients through his consultancy, Hella. He recently co-authored the book, Not a Playbook: The Art of Building a Brand, with Damien Bradfield, the co-founder of WeTransfer. In this episode, we chat all about how brands can grow without sacrificing their integrity, prioritising creativity and trust to build brands that will stand the test of time. I really hope you enjoy the episode and come let me know what you think. You can find me on Instagram at @lizmmosley or @buildingyourbrandpodcast. Key Takeaways A Brand is its People: A brand's culture is a reflection of the people who work there. WeTransfer's success came from hiring people from non-traditional backgrounds and fostering a culture that encouraged experimentation and didn't have layers of approval. The Power of Instinct: Especially in the early stages of building a brand, instinct is invaluable. Relying on instinct over-analysing data can lead to more authentic and compelling brand decisions. Build with Intentionality: Brands that endure are built with a purpose beyond just profitability. WeTransfer's intention was to inject a moment of joy into a utilitarian task and to champion the creative community they served. Embrace Unpredictability: While consistency is important, the brands that truly cut through the noise are those that are unpredictable. This is achieved by having a clear, ambitious vision from the start which gives you the license to experiment and do the unexpected. Trust is Everything: Building trust is a cornerstone of a successful brand. This extends from creating a trustworthy product to empowering collaborators, like artists and creatives, by giving them freedom and respect. Episode Highlights 06:53: Andreas shares the story behind his book, Not a Playbook, and the unlikely origins of WeTransfer, a tech company founded by designers. 13:58: A brand is simply the people who work there. Andreas explains how WeTransfer's culture of hiring individuals from non-traditional marketing backgrounds was fundamental to its success. 19:58: The significance of intentionality in branding. Andreas discusses how WeTransfer was built with an intention that went beyond profit, aiming to serve and celebrate the creative community. 27:05: How can brands be more creative? By articulating a vision that is bigger and more ambitious than the specific product or service they currently offer, using Apple as a prime example. 41:51: Andreas reveals the five key themes from the book that frame the WeTransfer story, reflecting the best qualities of an artist: intention, trust, faith, instinct, and serendipity. Welcome back to Let's Try This Again—I'm your host, B Simone, and this episode is extra special because I'm sitting down with my longtime friend and behind-the-scenes powerhouse, Jazmin. If you've ever wondered what it really takes to build a brand, keep a business afloat, and find the right team, this conversation is for you. We get real about our journey together—from building websites before B Simone Beauty was even a thing, to weathering the storm of losing team members and starting over from scratch. I share how, after resigning from our previous venture, we went from a team of eight or ten down to just the two of us, and how that season of transition tested our resilience and commitment to our vision. We talk about the importance of trusting the process, even when it feels like you're losing everything. I remember calling Jaz from the Virgin Islands, feeling anxious and unsure about starting the podcast, but her belief in me gave me the courage to try again. We also get honest about setting boundaries in business, especially when working with friends, and how crucial it is to have people around you who not only have the skills but truly believe in your vision. Jazmin keeps me grounded—when I'm dreaming big about arena tours and conferences, she's the one who helps me build the solid foundation to make those dreams a reality.I open up about learning to delegate, to release control, and to trust my team—like this morning, when I was exhausted and realized it was okay to let the team handle things while I took care of myself. We talk about how building a business is never a straight line—it's full of pivots, tough decisions, and moments of gratitude for the people who stick with you through it all. If you're in a season of transition, feeling like you've lost your team, or just need a reminder to trust the process and keep going, this episode is for you. Let's keep trying, growing, and building together.Sponsors//Simply Pop: See what the fizz is all about! To date, my new mini-series has very much been focused on the creation of your fragrances. However, once it's created, it becomes the time to put it out into the big wide world. But, how do you achieve it if you're a small independent perfume maker and you don't have the marketing budget or resources of a big company? Whether you know it or not, you're also carrying an expectation that you'll put your product on the internet and people will flock to buy it. In this episode, I give you the reality of both: what is achievable with marketing within a small indie brand, and what you should expect, and why both of these things can be much bigger and more prosperous than you think. KEY TAKEAWAYS The reality versus the expectation of making your first social media post or putting out your first advert is huge. Karen explains what people subconsciously think will happen, what the reality of most situations are, why you're not alone and what to expect. In the absence of large budgets and a dedicated marketing team, it can feel like you're in a David versus Goliath fight most days. However, as Karen explains, the real strengths of marketing lie elsewhere. Artists do not always feel comfortable selling themselves. Talking about your own work can leave you feeling self conscious or even arrogant, but it is a crucial part of the process. Karen gives you some courage and some tips on how to sell yourself effectively. All the marketing, sales, likes and comments on social media will never make you happy unless you know the answer to one very important question - “what does success look like to me?” Karen goes into depth on the importance of this point and how knowing the answer is the difference between real success and failure. BEST MOMENTS “The gap between the energy you put into the creation and the silence on your first social media post is where a lot of people spiral.” “Your most important marketing tool is to have real clarity about what you're doing, why you're creating, who it is for.” “You can't make someone buy something they don't want. But you can share what you've created in a way that will connect with the right people.” EPISODE LINKS Perfume Making 101 Waitlist Rose Fragrance Masterclass Wait List VALUABLE RESOURCES Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. Join me for an inspiring conversation with beauty industry pioneer Kim Wileman, co-founder of No Makeup Makeup and founder of Gala Beauty. Kim takes us on her unconventional journey from growing up with rock musician parents who toured with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, to discovering her passion for beauty at a Lord & Taylor counter. Kim shares how she built a successful career without finishing college, why no executive has ever asked about her education, and how following her heart to Hawaii opened doors she never expected. We dive deep into her philosophy of walking away from opportunities that aren't in alignment, even when money is tight, and how that approach has consistently led to better outcomes. From her early days making $5.80 an hour as a buyer to consulting for billionaires and now co-owning a revolutionary beauty brand, Kim's story is a masterclass in trusting your instincts, building expertise through experience, and creating wealth with purpose. She reveals her approach to risk management as an entrepreneur and shares her vision for using future success to invest in and mentor the next generation of founders. Key Topics: How growing up with parents who followed their dreams despite uncertainty shapes your relationship with risk and possibility Why she never finished college but built a successful career anyway - and why no executive has ever asked about her education How to recognize when opportunities aren't in alignment with your values and have the courage to walk away Building industry expertise and authority through hands-on experience rather than formal credentials The transition from employee to consultant to business owner - and how to manage financial risk at each stage Why following your heart (like moving to Hawaii for love) can open unexpected professional doors Her approach to building wealth for legacy - planning to invest in others rather than accumulating for herself Connect with Kim online: Website: https://nomakeupmakeup.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmykimkimkim/?hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimwileman/ Find more from Syama Bunten: Instagram: @syama.co, @gettingrichpod Website: https://syamabunten.com/ Download Syama's Guide to Getting Rich: www.syamabunten.com Big Delta Capital: www.bigdeltacapital.com

If you're still relying on Google traffic and ad revenue to grow your blog, here's the hard truth: that era is over. In this episode of The Blogger Genius Podcast, I sat down with Katie Trant of Foodie Brand Lab to talk about the seismic shift happening in online business. AI is changing how people search, generic content is flooding the internet, and Google algorithm updates are gutting traffic overnight. So what is working now? Katie and I break it down: it's time to stop chasing SEO and start building a memorable brand that people search for by name. Bloggers who mastered keyword research could build passive income machines. But now? With Google's updates and AI tools like ChatGPT answering simple questions instantly, those days are behind us. Katie shared how even her most high-performing posts like “how to cook dried chickpeas” are losing relevance—not because they're bad, but because users now ask AI instead of clicking through to a blog. What's the solution? You Are the Unique Ingredient The only thing that can't be copied by AI is you. Whether you're sharing chocolate chip cookie recipes or parenting tips, your voice, values, personality, and brand are what make you stand out. Katie puts it perfectly: “The only truly unique thing about your recipe is you.” That means showing up as a real person—on video, in your writing, and across your digital products. And yes, that means being relatable and even a little imperfect.
