Controlling FAST diseases increases the resilience of livelihoods, improves trade conditions, and enhances food security. In yet another excellent episode, Nancy and Jose are joined in the studio by John Thill, an author, a learning and development specialist, and a literacy advocate. When we say author, we mean storyteller.  A story of love, family, California history and how families are made.  "A California Love Story" starts in the 1920s with John's grandparents, future husband and wife Ray and Dora and their 205 letters back and forth from Wichita, KS to Oceanside, CA.  What we hear from John is how the letters reflect the love between his grandparents, their hopes, their dreams and Ray's incredible optimism about California and Oceanside in particular.  John was particularly moved by the promises made by his grandfather to his grandmother as to the life he would give her - and he followed through and ended up building a very succesful real estate company while also serving as Mayor of Oceanside.  We also hear why John painstakingly typed out the letters on his IBM Selectric in 1986 as a book for his family.  Not only was it inspiring, it was also partly how it handled the grief of losing his grandfather.  An excellent interview from a passionate gap minder. Let's revisit one of our favorite Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast episodes with Dr. Bibi Pirayesh. Dr. Bibi Pirayesh is a Learning Specialist and an Educational Therapist who has been in private practice for over a decade. While the emphasis of Dr. Pirayesh's work is on remediating learning disabilities in a one-on-one setting, she is also a sought after speaker and community advocate for children and families around learning rights. In this episode, we discuss how educational therapists help students develop the skills they need in order to be successful. You will also learn what can be done now to make a difference in the life of a child who is struggling in school. Listen on to hear Dr. Pirayesh's riveting statements on how learning differences and disorders can be viewed as a social justice issue.   Show Notes: [2:31] - Dr. Pirayesh began her career in education by accident and shares her story on how she started on this path with observing children and families as a researcher. [7:14] - Using a processing lens, Dr. Pirayesh helps students with remediation by first knowing what the issues are and provides targeted intervention. [9:34] - Educational therapists are important as they will be able to bring in speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, etc. as they discover the needs of the student. [11:50] - There are certain types of progress that are really easy to measure. Bibi uses phonics and phonemic awareness as an example.  [12:32] - So much of the work is about helping kids own their learning and demystifying the learning process. There are a lot of emotions for parents and students to manage. [14:27] - All brains are equipped to learn, grow, and expand. When we are able to help a child find what is getting in the way of that natural flow. [15:30] - We live in a world where there is a lot of pressure on both students and parents. [16:49] - When kids struggle, they lose the motivation for learning. [18:41] - Bibi explains that the way our formal education system works is a very linear and limited way of thinking and it is a social injustice. [20:20] - What we know from research is that 10-15% of children struggle with learning difficulties. [21:24] - There is a constant demand for higher and better production and that is what our education system has become.  [23:24] - These issues are large-scale cultural issues, and so much of the work we need to do is to undo the damage. [27:27] - Many parents have trouble accessing the very resources that protect them. [28:57] - Due to the way these laws are designed, we see the overrepresentation of minorities and students from a low socio-economic background. [33:16] - When kids with learning difficulties pass through school, are they ready to navigate the real world? [36:23] - Communities are organically designed to be able to figure out and solve their own problems, but a narrow education system prevents this. [39:53] - The system needs to work in a way that increases access to services in an equitable way no matter where you attend school. [43:19] - We've limited ourselves by seeing the world through a very tiny lens. [44:30] - Having this conversation and acknowledging the problem is an important first step. [46:20] - “Regardless of what is going on, if you move forward with the idea of connecting, empathizing, and understanding, somehow miraculously it will work.” [48:45] - Take a moment to build a relationship with your child's teacher and start a meaningful conversation. [49:47] - When you reach out to the teacher, you are modeling to your child that it is the right thing to do to make yourself vulnerable and ask for help. Do flashcards help improve basic numeracy skills? Should we use calculators as a special education accommodation? How many years of math do we really need to take in high school? I invited math curriculum expert Jonathan Regino to episode 123 of the De Facto Leaders podcast to answer some of these questions. With the Science of Reading on the forefront in many districts, we're starting to have a better understanding of the scope and sequence of English and Language Arts; but this doesn't always translate over to math curriculum.Jonathan Regino is a highly accomplished educator with a diverse range of experiences in the field of education. Beginning as a middle school math and science teacher in Pennsylvania, he quickly established himself as a dedicated and passionate educator. Transitioning from the classroom, Jonathan became a Teaching and Learning Specialist at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, providing invaluable support to educators and enhancing teaching practices throughout the County. As an Educational Consultant with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Special Education, he developed strategies for working with students with special needs within the math and STEM Classrooms. Jonathan's work as a curriculum developer at Age of Learning and as a facilitator and program manager for Code.org in Eastern PA showcased his commitment to innovative learning experiences and computer science education. Amanda went from Anthropology and Archaelogy to a Masters in Education, which ultimately led her to corporate training. Previously in the construction industry, she is now working in the travel space as a Learning Specialist, with a variety of learning responsibilities to oversee. Meet Amanda and listen to her story. Sherleen Bruno is a learning support specialist who works with young children with learning differences. With over fourteen years of experience in the field of education, Sherleen Bruno has served as a Special Educator to early learners from Pre-k through Second grade in public and private schools, as well as an Early Interventionist and Itinerant teacher.As a Learning Specialist, Sherleen provides targeted and direct instruction to students through individual and small group support by using the students' interests, learning styles, and individual learning goals. She targets multiple academic areas including reading, writing, and social skills while utilizing multi-sensory teaching approaches including Sounds in Motion (SIM) and Orton-Gillingham. Sherleen also works closely with families to offer tools and structures that will ultimately help students manage their learning independently. In addition, Sherleen serves as an Educational Consultant to provide teachers and staff with insights and recommendations for best practices in supporting students with varied academic and social-emotional needs.Sherleen continues to strive to support students in reaching their best potential academically, socially and emotionally.

On today's episode of the Orton-Gillingham Podcast, we are speaking with special guest Jeanine Cyrwus about Dyslexia in D.C.   Jeanine has an M.Ed. in Special Education and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Education Leadership. She also has a Dyslexia Advocacy Certificate from the Dyslexia Training Institute. Jeanine has an impressive 20 years of experience in the field of Special Education, with her focus being on learning difficulties and dyslexia. Positions that Jeanine has held include Classroom Special Education Teacher, Learning Specialist, Language Arts Coordinator at Oakwood School, and most recently, the Director of Outreach and Literacy at Oakwood School. When asked about her passion, Jeanine responded, “I'm a mother to a child with dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD and I know what it's like to see your child struggle to read, not get appropriate intervention, and watch as this impacts their self-esteem.”   Jeanine joins us today to talk with us about her time in D.C. attending a Congressional Dyslexia Panel. In this panel, members of the Senate and Congress discussed the 21st Century Dyslexia Act. This bill will allow students to be identified by their school as students with dyslexia and will get them the specialized help they need to succeed.   So, what is the status of this bill, and why hasn't it been passed yet? It's tempting to ignore the looming shadow that is college. It's the monster under the bed, the squirrel in the attic – we leave it alone and hope it goes away. But as usual, denial isn't the answer. How DO we prepare our teens for college readiness and college success? Theresa E. Laurie Maitland earned her M.Ed. and Ph.D at the University of Pittsburgh. She has been a Learning Specialist and Academic Coach at the Learning Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1994, working with students with learning, attention and emotional challenges, assisting them in turning those challenges into gifts. In 2003 she became a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC). She has been the primary investigator on research projects studying coaching and its impact on college students, and investigating the graduation rates and enrollment patterns of college students with ADHD/LD.
