We're all looking for our next big opportunity, but it's not always easy to know how to be ready for it. In this episode I speak with Meagan Eishen, a pianist, singer, designer, and calligrapher, about taking risks in your art, putting in the work, and saying yes to things that scare you. We discuss how we've both taken chances and ended up in places we never expected as a result and how we make the most of those places once we get there. We also bond over music, movies, and a love of trying new things! New episodes every other Monday! Subscribe for reminders! Videos with creative tips and my guests at YouTube.com/dontworryimfinite! Do you ever feel like you need to shift your outlook on the world? My guest this week is Alyssa Ditch, author, dancer, and intuitive healer. Alyssa has worked hard to recontextualize her purpose and intention in life and is dedicated to helping others work on theirs. We talk extensively about expectations and how they can often set us up for failure and how to eschew the conditioning we've been brought up with to find our true selves. We get into making connections with other people, setting intention to your actions, and finding your own way of understanding the world. Enjoy my chat with Alyssa! New episodes every Monday! This week's guest is Kimberly English, a painter of farmlands and Americana. She has been building her business for a decade and growing within the South Jersey farming community to help immortalize the places that sustain so many families and lifestyles there. Not only does she help raise money for local charities, but she also uses her artwork to promote understanding of an important facet of daily life. There's an inherent romanticism to being a touring artist on the road, but my guest, Mary Scholz, and I know that there's a lot of ups and downs to that life. Mary is a singer/songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist, and a great friend. She has been putting out great music for many years, and she just released a new EP called Lonesome in conjunction with signing to her new label. Mary and I get into the isolation and freedom of traveling solo, making authentic and genuine connections with other people, and how reframing your failures as part of the path forward can be liberating and inspiring. When you find something you're passionate about and put all your energy into it, great things can happen. My guest this week, Chanel James, does just that with everything she creates. As a filmmaker she has been writing, directing, and producing her own work as well as helping others realize their own films for a long time now. Her pure passion for the art comes through in our discussion where we get into honing your craft even when you're not working, using your skills to help others, and overcoming the feelings of imposter syndrome. We got to reminisce about our favorite times in music and pop culture history and dig deep into the difficult emotions that come along with creating anything we call art. Sign up for the small artists/small business newsletter here! Shop small and local this holiday season! We all want to be our own boss, but is it sometimes better to have someone besides ourselves to be accountable to? This week I revisit my conversation with Nathan Terry, a composer, musician, and overall audio magician. He made the theme music for this podcast! We get into taking stock of our work and life, making things work with whatever we have available, and how allowing ourselves to fail when trying new things can often be the key to our success. As we reminisce about the many projects we've worked on together over the years, we talk about how communication is so important in creative partnerships. New episodes every Monday! When you have an idea sometimes you just have to run with it and see where it goes. My guest this week is Zack Steele, an actor, singer, and musician I met working on cruise ships. He was in the cast that put on main stage shows multiple times a week, and we began the pandemic together on a ship in southeast Asia. While some of us felt like we didn't know what to do, Zack got to work writing and demoing songs for a musical based on the pop punk music we grew up with and connected through. His drive and desire to create something led to a full scale musical production being done across the country via Zoom and studio sessions. His persistence and excitement for the project have continued to build a community of collaborators working towards something I know is going to be huge. Enjoy my conversation with Zack Steele! Sometimes it feels like we're caught between creating the art that people want to experience and the art that we want to make. My guest Sarah Saturday has tackled that divide from both sides of the music industry. She is a songwriter, visual artist, and brilliant creator of Gardening, Not Architecture, a musical project that you should be not only listening to but watching. Sarah and I talk about some fun and deep topics including figuring out how to be authentic in a world that wants you to create for money. It's not always easy to find that balance. We get into finding your best friends through the art you consume, being fully present when experiencing art, and how sometimes knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing when to start. I had such a great time talking to Sarah about all of her projects and laughing about our shared experiences. Enjoy! New episodes every Monday! Subscribe for reminders! Do you ever feel like you have trouble finding your true artistic voice? When you're trying to be creative and also make money to survive, the real you can get lost in between. My guest this week is Benedict Brain, a photographer, writer, and artist who is still trying to find just where he fits in to either side of the creative world. It turns out he's right in the middle, and that's not a bad thing. We talk about finding your creative tribe, staying attuned to the nuance of change, and how having boundaries can open up your artistic mind more than total freedom. New episodes every Monday! Do you ever feel like you're not "qualified" to be the creative person you say you are? My guest this week is DaVonne Armstrong, a poet, writer, and library director. This episode follows a slightly different format that I'm very excited about. The idea here is collaboration and feedback, so DaVonne and I read our poems aloud and critique/discuss each one. We talk about how we've evolved as writers and how we can continue to grow our work. We get into giving your work over to the audience once its written, dealing with negative feelings, and how the meaning of artworks can change over time as we change. New episodes every Monday! No writer wants to write, they all want to have written. My guest today might sound familiar-- it's Christopher "Chuck" Atkinson from Imitating Art, our movie podcast! Chuck and I talk about creating things together and separately, including the long buildup to finally launching our first podcast together. While Chuck describes himself as lazy, he is anything but. He has several writing projects going on for work and pleasure, including his second year of writing for National Novel Writing Month! Does it sometimes feel like everyone wants to be heard, but no one wants to listen? Katie Askegaard challenges that idea by asking people questions to help them come to their own conclusions instead of jumping to her own. Katie is a dancer, traveler, and writer who is currently tackling many of the biggest social questions through writing while managing a freelance business, an insatiable need to travel and explore, and living life in a new country. She has an infectious curiosity and a way of helping you think critically about your choices. We get into avoiding confirmation bias, finding truth online amidst a sea of bad information, and how having a positive outlook can lead to better outcomes in our daily lives. Do you sometimes feel like life is just about ticking off arbitrary things from a list that society has told us we need to? My guest Jocelyn Bermudez felt that way, but she has made it a point to take life into her own hands and show everyone that you can do it your own way. Jocelyn is a former lactation specialist and current owner of a marketing business. She balances family life with world travel, hosting two podcasts, and running her business from home.
