Chip has spent nearly 30 years coaching executives and family business leaders through some of the most complex transitions in business — and he first met Laurie 13 years ago when she was a CEO candidate in a third-generation family business. The best organizations are people-oriented and performance-driven — in that order. When performance leads and people follow, bad things happen. Every hire, especially at the CEO level, should be evaluated through three lenses: strengths, motivations, and fit. Viewing the business as an asset — not a legacy — is what makes a clean exit possible. Founders who treat their company as an asset can make clear-headed decisions about growth, transition, and sale. Those who treat it purely as a legacy often hold on too long, stall the next generation, and turn what was once a strength into a bottleneck. Hubris is the silent killer of succession. When leaders believe they are the only ones who can run the business, delegation collapses, decision-making centralizes, and the organization becomes dependent on one person. Chip has seen companies where no one could spend $100 without CEO approval — and half the leadership team couldn't survive the transition when that CEO finally left. Retirement has three stages — and most founders only plan for the first one. Vacation, depression, and meaning and purpose. The honeymoon phase fades fast. Founders who haven't built outside interests, hobbies, or identity beyond the business hit a wall — and without a plan, depression follows. The goal is to reach meaning and purpose before a crisis forces the issue. Crisis is often the catalyst for transition — but it doesn't have to be. Whether it's a health scare, a lost client, or a market shift, crises force the introspection that should have happened years earlier. Chip advocates for doing that work proactively — in your 50s or early 60s — before external pressure removes your options. A hobby isn't a luxury — it's a succession strategy. Finding something outside the business that gives you purpose, community, and a sense of leadership is one of the most practical things a founder can do to prepare for transition. Seit mehr als 20 Jahren kennen sich Tankred Stachelhaus und Andy Scholz. Zum ersten Mal begegneten sie sich, als Tankred einen Artikel über die fotografische Arbeit von Andy in einer Essener Tageszeitung schrieb. Im Kunstverein Ruhr treffen sie sich wieder, um die Zeit etwas Revue passieren zu lassen. Die Diplomarbeit von Andy Scholz wurde übrigens 2005 im Forum für Kunst und Architektur gezeigt, in dem das öffentliche Gespräch am 20. März 2026 stattfand. Tankred Stachelhaus, Jahrgang 1970, ist Magister der Kommunikationswissenschaft, Germanistik und Philosophie, Vorsitzender des Kunstvereins Ruhr, Mitbegründer der Essener Ausstellungsreihe »Kunst im Wohnraum« und Jurymitglied des Förderpreises »Junge Positionen NRW«. Im Terminal des Düsseldorfer Flughafens initiierte und kuratierte er die preisgekrönte Schau »Art Walk«. Über zwei Jahrzehnte lang begleitete er unter anderem für die Neue Ruhr Zeitung, die KUNSTZEITUNG und den Informationsdienst KUNST die Kunst- und Ausstellungsszene in Essen, dem Ruhrgebiet und Nordrhein-Westfalen. Er begleitete mit seinen Texten und Reden zahlreiche Kataloge und Vernissagen. Darüber hinaus ist er Gitarrist der »Funkrockimprovisationskappelle ›Projekt‹«. Andy Scholz wurde 1971 in Varel geboren, studierte zunächst Philosophie und Medienwissenschaften, um dann schließlich an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen einen künstlerischen Abschluss in Fotografie zu machen. Er lebt seit mehr als 20 Jahren mit seiner Familie als freier Künstler, Autor und Dozent in Essen-Rüttenscheid. Seine Arbeiten wurden seitdem international ausgestellt. Zahlreiche Lehraufträge führten ihn quer durch die Bundesrepublik und die USA. Als Kurator und Künstlerischer Leiter machte er sich zuletzt einen Namen mit Ausstellungen und Symposien für das INTERNATIONALE FESTIVAL FOTOGRAFISCHER BILDER sowie als Herausgeber und Moderator vom Podcast: Fotografie Neu Denken. Wieso Olaf Scholz für Olympische Spiele in Hamburg wirbt, weshalb es in den kommenden Tagen laut wird in Hamburg und warum Otto vorsichtig in die Zukunft blickt.

Natürlich ist der Weinservice von Christian Scholz fast wie eine kleine Aufführung. Präzise Bewegungen, ein intuitiv definierter Tonfall, ein Vokabular, das sich zwischen Gästerespekt und tiefgründiger Kennerschaft bewegt. Und natürlich ist er auch einer der Weinmenschen, die nicht nur einschenken, sondern positiv inszenieren. Ist er doch der Chef-Weinkellner in einem der derzeit gefragtesten Restaurants unserer Republik. Dem Restaurant Haerlin im Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg, einem jener Orte, an denen große Namen, große Flaschen und große Erwartungen täglich aufeinandertreffen. Und eben genau dort begegnet Christian Scholz dem Wein nicht wie ein Schatzanbeter, sondern eher wie ein Kurator. Ein Treuhänder von sage und schreibe 100.000 Flaschen. Und er versteht, dass große Weine nicht deshalb groß sind, weil sie teuer sind, sondern weil sie etwas erzählen. Und er archiviert diese Geschichten über Herkunft, über Zeit, über Geschichte und natürlich über die Menschen. Nicht, weil Archivare staubige Verwalter wären. Sondern weil sie entscheiden, was bewahrt und vermittelt werden muss. Er wirkt nicht wie jemand, der sich vom bloßen Prestige beeindrucken lässt. Das ist in einer Branche, in der Etiketten gelegentlich fast mehr Aufmerksamkeit bekommen als Inhalte, bemerkenswert. Große Weine interessieren ihn – aber nicht als Trophäen. Sondern als kulturelle Objekte mit Aussagekraft. Ein Sommelier wie er sammelt nicht wahllos Worte, Geschichten und Wein. Er bewertet. Trennt Substanz von Dekoration. Dauer von Trend. Relevanz von Lärm. Und genau das scheint Christian Scholz auszuzeichnen. Diese Episode ist kein Spaziergang durch gefällige Lieblingsweine. Sie ist ein Gespräch über Verantwortung, über Geschmack, über Mechanismen einer Branche, die zwischen echter Leidenschaft und perfekter Selbstinszenierung pendelt. Er ist kein Fachmann für einfache Antworten. Zum Glück.

Damit folge er dem Gebot seines Vorgängers im Amt, Olaf Scholz. Unter dem Deckmantel der angeblichen „Zeitenwende“ hatte Scholz bereits die Weichen gestellt, um das deutsche Volk in die demokratische „Kriegstüchtigkeit“ zu führen, eine Forderung, die von Verteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius bis heute mantraartig wiederholt wird.Hinterhältig wie Verschwörungstheoretiker nun mal sind, verweisen diese bösartigen Schreiberlinge darauf, dass der Begriff der „Kriegstüchtigkeit“ durch und durch nazi-vorbelastet ist. Also nicht nur ein bisschen, so wie der Spruch, der auf der Klinge des so genannten „Nazi-Ehrendolchs“ der SA stand, nämlich „Alles für Deutschland“. Nein, der Begriff „kriegstüchtig“ ist durch und durch tief-braun nazi-versifft. Davon zeugt, dass der Obernazi, Reichspropagandaminister Dr. Josef Goebbels immer wieder die „Kriegstüchtigkeit“ des deutschen Volkes eingefordert hat. Diesen Umstand missbrauchen rechte Agitatoren heute, um das Vertrauen der Menschen in die heiligen Institutionen der herrschenden Elite und ihrer Demokratie zu untergraben.Im Internet wird von einschlägigen Kreisen auf den Umstand verwiesen, dass einerseits ein namhafter AfD-Politiker von einem deutschen Gericht wegen der Benutzung des verwerflichen SA-Spruchs „Alles für Deutschland“ rechtskräftig verurteilt wurde, aber andererseits Verteidigungsminister Pistorius seit Beginn seiner Amtszeit, ungerügt, unbehindert und unbestraft mit Dr. Goebbels Nazi-Begriff der „Kriegstüchtigkeit“ schwadroniert, und zwar in Bild, Wort und Schrift.Tatsächlich hat Minister Pistorius im Bundestag und in Fernsehinterviews seit Jahren gefordert, Deutschland müsse wieder „kriegstüchtig“ und „wehrhaft“ werden. Dafür müsse die Bundeswehr sowie die Gesellschaft als Ganzes wieder entsprechend neu aufgestellt werden. Im Eifer der neuen, „Zeitenwende“ in Richtung Krieg gegen Russland bediente er sich sogar am Sprachschatz des einstigen Propagandaministers der Nazi-Diktatur. Der hatte z.B. am 9. Juli 1944, als die Niederlage der Wehrmacht bereits nicht mehr aufzuhalten war, auf der Titelseite seiner von ihm selbst herausgegebenen Wochenzeitung Das Reich einen Leitartikel (1) mit der Schlagzeile „Kriegstüchtig wie nur je“ verfasst. Darin beschwört der NAZI-Propagandaministers die „Kriegstüchtigkeit“ Deutschlands und verlangt, alle Kräfte der „Nation“ (Gesellschaft) für den „Sieg“ gegen Russland zu mobilisieren.Böse Zungen fragen: Sind diese auffälligen Parallelen zu heute rein zufällig? Verfolgt die herrschende Klasse heute wieder ähnliche Ziele gegen Russland?83 Jahre nach dem Goebbels-Artikel in Das Reich, Ende 2023, veröffentlichten Boris Pistorius und der Generalinspekteur der Bundeswehr, Carsten Breuer, die „Verteidigungspolitischen Richtlinien 2023“, die laut Kritikern als Blaupause für einen „totalen Krieg“ gesehen werden könnten. Er ist relativ verwundert darüber und meinte in einem kürzlich geführten Spiegel-Interview, dass kein Kanzler es so schwer vor ihm hatte.Wörtlich sagte Merz dem Spiegel:„Schröder hatte mit hartem Widerstand zu kämpfen, aber er wurde nicht so angefeindet, wie ich angefeindet werde. Ich bin nur gelegentlich auf Social Media unterwegs. Aber wenn Sie mal schauen, was dort über mich verbreitet wird, wie ich da angegriffen und herabgewürdigt werde – kein Bundeskanzler vor mir hat so etwas ertragen müssen. Ich beschwere mich nicht darüber, aber so ist es.“Merz hob dabei den Druck durch Öffentlichkeit und soziale Medien hervor.Dass Schröder nicht so angefeindet wurde wie Sie, verwundert nicht, Herr Merz, weil er doch Einiges für das Volk getan hat, und im Gegensatz zu Ihnen kein Bellizist ist. Sie muten dem Volk einen massiven Sozialabbau für die Entwicklung einer Kriegswirtschaft wegen einer herbeigeredeten Kriegsgefahr durch Russland zu, die mit nichts – absolut nichts – begründbar ist.Nennen Sie mir auch nur ein Indiz, warum der Russe 2029 vor der Tür Deutschlands stehen sollte! Meinten sie in Orwell'scher Manier vielleicht 2092?Auf die Anspielung im Spiegelinterview, dass auch Scholz einiges wegstecken musste, meinte Merz, das sei zwar richtig, allerdings sieht er einen fundamentalen Unterschied:„Scholz hat versucht, der Bevölkerung zu sagen, dass alles schon nicht so schlimm wird, wenn man ihn wählt. Er hat ja immer gesagt, er wolle die Sicherheitspolitik nicht gegen die Sozialpolitik ausspielen.“Das könne seine Regierung sich aber nicht mehr leisten, man müsse Prioritäten setzen, meinte Merz. So ein Schmarrn, Herr Bundeskanzler, wenn überhaupt sitzt eine Gefahr für Europas Sicherheit westlich, jenseits des Atlantiks in einem Land mit einem durchgeknallten Präsidenten, und nicht östlich der EU. On February 27, 2022, three days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Olaf Scholz, who was then the Chancellor of Germany, gave a speech to an emergency session of the German parliament at which he described the attack as a Zeitenwende – an historic turning point. This watershed moment, he declared, meant “that the world afterwards will no longer be the same as the world before. The issue at the heart of this [change] is whether power is allowed to prevail over the law: whether we permit Putin to turn back the clock to the nineteenth century and the age of great powers, or whether we have it in us to keep warmongers like Putin in check. That requires strength of our own.” He announced a major restructuring of the country's cautious defense policy, including billions for modernization of the military and a promise that defense spending would exceed 2 percent of Germany's GDP, a level of spending that Scholz's party (the Social Democrats) traditionally had opposed. Three years later, Germany has a new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who leads the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He succeeded in amending Germany's constitution to lift the so-called “debt brake,” which means that the country will spend significantly more on defense as well as hundreds of billions on related infrastructure over the next ten years. But will it be enough to allow Germany to deter Russian aggression against Europe — particularly if the United States under Trump withdraws from its post-1945 role as the guarantor of European security? Can Germany develop a defense industry that can deliver under wartime conditions? Can Germany take on the leadership role in Europe that it long has been reluctant to assume — and will other countries accept Germany in this role?Jan Techau is a director with the Eurasia Group's Europe team, covering Germany and European security. He is also a senior fellow with the Transatlantic Defense and Security Program at the Center for European Policy Analysis. From 2020 to 2023, he served in the German government as head of speechwriting for three ministers in the German Ministry of Defense. In this podcast interview, he discusses the European reaction to Trump's reelection, the likelihood of Germany's being able to make the physical and psychological adjustments it would need in order to become the principal provider of conventional deterrence in Europe, the rise of anti-Americanism in Germany on both the left and right, and whether Europeans are capable of keeping peace on the continent without the help of the Americans. He also explains his 2016 diagnosis of what he called “sophisticated state failure,” which long before the Abundance movement was dreamed of predicted that highly developed countries would find it increasingly difficult to get anything done, and that this paralysis would provide an opening for populist uprisings all over the world. “The only lasting way out of sophisticated state failure,” he concluded, “is for responsible politicians to worry less about getting re-elected and start risking their political careers for things that need to be done.”
