While out tracking in the new snow the other day I came across some relatively small tracks, reminiscent of a Chipmunk (Tamias striatus) or Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), though small enough to be a Short-tailed Weasel (Mustela ermina). It took a second before I recognized them as Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans) tracks. I have been encountering Southern Flying Squirrels in various ways for a few years, including tracks, scat, feeding sign, live sightings, and I even pet one once, but through all of this, I didn't know much about them. Hence, inspired by my recent tracking outing, I figured I would take some time to get to know the Southern Flying Squirrel a little better. Seit 49 Jahren organisiert Leon Finger den Weihnachtsmarkt in Steele. Wir laufen mit ihm einmal über seinen Markt und sprechen über das was war und wie es weiter geht. Ideen gibt es genug. Ein Jahr will Finger noch die Fäden in der Hand behalten. Dann tritt er in die zweite Reihe zurück. Radio Essen-Stadtreporter Timm Schröder trifft Leon Finger in seinem Bekleidungsgeschäft am Kaiser-Otto-Platz. Das feiert in diesem Jahr 100. Geburtstag. Schon seine Großeltern haben in Essen Herrenbekleidung verkauft. Erst in der Innenstadt. Er hat dann vor fast 50 Jahren in Steele weitergemacht. Mittlerweile führen seine Frau und sein Sohn das Geschäft. Leon Finger konzentriert sich auf das Organisieren diverser Feste in Steele. Los ging alles vor 49 Jahren mit dem Weihnachtsmarkt. Der zieht mittlerweile Gäste an von weit über die Stadtteilgrenzen hinaus. Das liegt unter anderem an der Schlagerbühne und dem Eisenbahndorf. Aber auch zum Beispiel die drehende Tanne und der Besuch des Nikolauses mit einem Hubschraubers sind die Ideen von Mr. Weihnachtsmarkt. So wird er liebevoll von einigen auch genannt. Veranstaltungen sind die große Leidenschaft von Leon Finger und er kann sich auf die Unterstützung seiner Familie verlassen. Bei unserem Rundgang über den Steeler Weihnachtsmarkt treffen wir den Sohn und die Frau von Leon Finger. Sie ziehen gemeinsam an einem Strang. Lob gibt es aber auch von dem Betreiber der Almhütte auf dem Kaiser-Otto-Platz. Ein großer Teil der Dekorationen in dem Festzelt kommt von der Familie Finger. Der Gastronom schätzt die vielen Ideen von Leon Finger und freut sich über immer über seinen Besuch. In unserem Podcast plaudert er aber auch privates aus und wie es die nächsten Jahre weitergeht. Auch hierfür hat er schon viele Ideen.
