Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
One hundred months of subscription boxes. It feels almost unreal to say that out loud. That I've curated 100 different subscription boxes over the past 8 ½ years. And yet… here we are. When I look back at where it started, I can still picture myself stressing over every tiny detail of that very first box. My “Lilly Pulitzer-inspired” box, packed in a plain brown craft box I stamped by hand. During the early days of my subscription box, more always felt better, so I just kept adding things, forgetting all about profit margins, and hoping my customers would be happy. Fast forward to today? My process, my confidence, and my profit margins look completely different. That first year, I thought adding more products would make the box feel more valuable. But over time, I learned the magic is in the experience. The way the boxes make my subscribers feel. Instead of thinking that more is better, I choose one wow-worthy item and curate the rest of the box around it. And the packaging? Let's just say we've come a long way from those stamped boxes and logo tape. When I reached 100 subscribers, I finally ordered my first custom boxes in my signature turquoise. A few years later, we gave The Monogram Box™ packaging the full glow-up it deserved. Out of those 100 boxes, some stand out more than others, for better and for worse. There was the box where FedEx left their truck door open, and my boxes ended up all over a busy road in my town (yes, really). The “Oh My Gourd” box that I thought was funny, but many of my subscribers didn't. Lesson learned - give them what they want! And the custom-designed green Christmas sweatshirt that subscribers still talk about – and still wear – years later. Every one of those moments taught me something. How to plan further ahead. How to problem solve and pivot. How to listen (really listen) to what my subscribers wanted, even when it wasn't what I expected. Today, we plan boxes 6–8 months in advance. I still start with one main item and build the rest of the box around it. And yes , I stopped packing boxes myself after about 45 of them when we moved into the Warehouse (the team kindly told me I was… in the way). And my favorite hack? An automatic paper folder for packing slips. A little thing, but it saves so much time every month. You'd think by our 100th box I could predict exactly what my subscribers will love. But they still surprise me. Sometimes it's the smallest detail that gets the biggest reaction. So what keeps them coming back month after month? The seasonality. Their style needs change, so the box does too. The surprise. That feeling of opening something unexpected every month. The connection. They know I care about their feedback and use it to make each box better. If you're sitting at box #3 or #33 right now and wondering if you're on the right track, let me tell you: you are. And if you haven't launched yet, this advice is for you, too! Consistency matters more than perfection. Growth happens when you keep showing up, even when no one's cheering you on yet. And more than anything, remember: building a sustainable subscription box business is a long game. One box at a time, you're building something bigger than you can see right now. So keep going. Your 100th box is closer than you think. Join me for this episode as I share the story of my first 100 subscription boxes and how the lessons they've taught me can help you reach your 100th box and beyond. In this episode, Paul was asked the following question. Listen as Paul breaks down a question about if a metal wireway is used above a panel and interposed between an EMT raceway and a small 18” EMT Raceway, often called a nipple. Does the wireway have to meet the same “straight” as “Eight” requirements in 314.28(A)(1) even if not being used as a “pull box”. Also, he answers a question, in his opinion, of the lack of SCCR ratings on commercial HVAC equipment that may cause a conflict with 110.10 of the National Electrical Code.Listen as Paul Abernathy, CEO, and Founder of Electrical Code Academy, Inc., the leading electrical educator in the country, discusses electrical code, electrical trade, and electrical business-related topics to help electricians maximize their knowledge and industry investment. If you are looking to learn more about the National Electrical Code, for electrical exam preparation, or to better your knowledge of the NEC then visit https://fasttraxsystem.com for all the electrical code training you will ever need by the leading electrical educator in the country with the best NEC learning program on the planet.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/master-the-nec-podcast--1083733/support.

Let's see how we feel, after a message from our sponsors. Jesus effing Christ, Jimmy Kimmel—goddamn! Why are you always this fucked UP. (Super fuckedupedly) I'm not, I'm just feel—(belches)— like it! —look like it, okay! Omah Gas. I nuh! Uh. Pedro Pascal? You're right again. Yehy! Well, almost right. What. That character he played on that extremely viral SNL skit— OKAH. Woah. —this is the dimension where he's— —oh my god— Yeah. —UHMYGAH! Cut back to: —look— jus— don't look at me. When you're—lookin at me, like that— okay?! Goddamn, he is fucked up. Yeah. This is critical. What did you do to Jimmy Kimmel? Nothing! Okay! He was just— like that already— you know —you don't know! Honestly he's kinda always, a little… WOOOF! Yowza. WOOF WOOF! JIMMY! DO NOT LICK ME! *panting* WOOF WOOF! AUGHHH. Get him out of here before he pees on the rug. I second that. Comeon, boy— WOOF! DOWN! [he obeys intently] Good Jimmy Kimmel. Good— —RUFINOL. What? [suddenly, JIMMY KIMMEL is human again and answers intently. Yes. It seems the word itself has broken his extreme delirium— —yo, okay, what is going on?! You've got to can this thing What. Cancel it. No way. I want to go. This thing, cannot happen, okay! It can't! Wtf Jimmy Fallon, stop inserting yourself into everything! — Unless it's me. EW. GROSS. Shots fired. No, I would call that a foul ball—Get it. No, Cause. You know. He's a bird, kind of. Oh. You mean, like “Fowl ball” Yeah! You got it! Yeah but not without like, thinking about it— So it doesn't work? It didn't work. Yo, but that part does explain why: CUT TO: No, you're right, I do hate Jimmy Fallon. —a lot. A lot. Okay? —but to be fair, I also hate Brad Pitt in the same way. BRAD PITT …You do? Yes, Brad Pitt i do— Very much, Hate you. BRAD PITT (Tearing up emotionally) Like, a lot? Uhm. Like, more than a lot, I just. BRAD PITT is actually extremely fragile and very emotionally sensitive. Is this a prescription for— fucking roofies?! I— have a, a…medical condition. That requires roofies?! Yes actually. It's very…serious. Shapeshifting is very serious. What kind of medical condition requires roofie-ing yourself. I didn't—I don't—I can't roofie myself, actually. What! No way… Someone else has to administer the dose, okay?! So wait. Uhogh, what the fuck man. This is— [he bites his knuckles nervously, then pats his pocket area, before realizing he is no longer wearing pants. Everyone just shrugs, but he becomes increasingly upset.] Where is my— phone?[more shrugs and blank stares] He quickly shuffles through the room and then the open suitcase of empty prescription bottles, spiraling into a deep void of panic and doubt— then, in an act of desperation and apparent extreme thirst, he reaches for the decorative flower vase, ejects the flowers— never mind that they are thorned roses and he appears to be bleeding without giving this a second thought, and chugs the liquid from the translucent crystal vase in a hearty and impressive glug of chugs; gesturing towards the now empty vase with the subtle remark— [beat] It's just vodka— I always have them do that. He sits down on the edge of the bed and takes a sigh as this seems to have calmed him, besides the trickle of blood running down the vase, which he still grips in one hand while rubbing his forehead with the other in complete distress… He seems to be looking out into the universe searching for an answer— seeking a solution to this unknown conundrum— and questions the cause of his demise. A single tear forms in his eye as he calmly asks: …does anyone know how to get ahold of Seth Rogen? The room is a confused and sticky, silent heap of bewildered unknowns. TITLE CARD {Enter The Multiverse} … was that the “message from our sponsors”? Shh! L E G E N D S: ICONS don't look at me. [The Festival Project ™] 50 CENT bursts down the door. WHERE'S MY SHIT, JIMMY? Fiddy. Fiddy, look, man— Don't “FIDDY” me! Look, I can explain. Well, then, explain— TV man. Go on ahead. Look. This is— this was not my fault— Then what was it?! This was— oh, God… Go ahead! It was— this was like a game. This ain't no goddamn game, Jimmy Kimmel, I'll tell you that much right now. Yo. But it—was— a game, though, it just— [got out of hand] {Enter The Multiverse} Museum in a curio cabinet; I know, I know, I know That's the boy, That's the boy, That's the boy I saw That's my boy, that's my boy, that's the boy I know I know Museum or curiosity Too late to tell the tale I think Just cover all with masking tape It is a game, To move the pieces Leave it, let it be, She said Hideous and when the winter hits And the withered women come again Let it be sinking into the sea with the rest of the things I don't need, i never needed I never need it Several synchronicities later, Still something sees symphonies in him Music and misers and mistereases, mistresses Listen to tin written sentiments And remember to forget the rest It's been minted Minted, minted Don't talk Just fucking listen And you'll never fucking get it. Consider the joy of a box that holds useful things. We are like boxes ourselves, containers holding things. Sometimes we hold little, sometimes just right, often we hold too much. Look around you and see the boxes. They are there. And they are most useful when they hold just the right amount, not too much, not too little. For a lot of reasons, we lean toward holding too much. We should hold faith, commitment, love, and whatever style we are created to be. And we must let go of what we don't need. A collaboration between Aston University in the UK and RAD Global will help small farmers in East Africa keep food fresher for longer, preventing food waste and improving livelihoods. Working with other partners they have developed pioneering cold storage boxes which can keep food fresh without access to grid electricity. Affordable cold boxes for small farmers in East Africa Whilst working in Uganda, Tim Messeder, founder of UK agricultural development company RAD Global, noticed that small scale fishers in Uganda had a major problem keeping fish fresh. The African country is large, and this causes an issue in keeping fish fresh in the blistering heat after it is caught from Lake Victoria and from various fishponds spread around the country in remote locations. The fishers, many of whom are women, have to transport their catch for up to nine hours during which time their harvest goes off. Surveys across the region reveal that 42% of traders experience fish spoilage due to inadequate cooling, resulting in lost income and increased food insecurity. To help prevent waste Tim drew up a plan for a cool box that could keep fish fresh for up to 48 hours, could be transported on the back of a motorcycle and was affordable to people on very low incomes. He contacted Aston University and between the two they developed his idea into the prototype now known as RADiCool, which aims to extend the safe selling window for fish from 12 to 24 hours. The prototype development was supported by the Efficiency for Access Research and Development Fund. The RADiCool system features a lightweight, insulated cold box powered by advanced phase change material (PCM) and integrated internet of things (IoT) technology for real-time temperature and GPS monitoring. The innovative system cools fish from 25°C to refrigeration temperatures within four hours and maintains cold storage conditions for over 24 hours, without additional pre-cooling capacity. Purpose-built to fit on motorbikes - the primary transport mode for rural vendors - RADiCool is practical, scalable, and tailored to first and last mile delivery needs in resource-constrained settings. PCM technology is an environmentally friendly solution for maintaining cooling temperatures. The materials absorb and release energy as they transition from solid to liquid and back again, similar to the process of ice melting and refreezing. These specially designed PCMs can maintain a consistent cold temperature for extended periods without the need for continuous electricity. This makes them particularly suitable for transporting food, medicine, and other temperature-sensitive items in an energy-efficient way. The PCM panels for RADiCool are frozen in solar-powered hubs for later use in precooling and storing the fish at the desired temperature. Tim Messeder said: "RADiCool brings together cutting-edge technology while taking into account the challenging realities of the African context. "We are committed to empowering small-scale traders with sustainable solutions that reduce waste and improve livelihoods." The project's success marks a major step forward in addressing the cold chain gap in Africa's informal food markets. Through field testing and technical iteration, the team has developed a system that can function effectively off-grid, supporting food security and economic resilience in the face of climate and infrastructure challenges. RAD Global and Aston University are now focusing on scaling and commercialisation. Planned next steps include finalising the new special design PCM panels, partnering with manufacturers, expanding field trials, and deploying a pay-per-use business model to increase accessibility. Ongoing collaboration with other partners (ThinkAqua UK, Therma-Inova UK and Dulotrop Uganda) will ensure further staff training, impact evaluation, and long-term sustainability. "RADiCool demonstrates the power of cross-sector innovation in addressing global development challenges," said Dr Ahm...

In the 1960s, three babies were left at differing locations around the country shortly after their birth. David McBride was found in a Belfast driveway, John Dowling was found in a Drogheda phone box and Helen Ward at a Dundalk phone box. All are siblings. Their story was told in a documentary which aired last night and Helen and David joined Ivan to tell their story.
Subdollar stocks —those priced under $1—now make up nearly half of all share volume in U.S. markets, while contributing a fraction of the notional value (the actual dollar amount being traded). In this episode of Boxes and Lines Lite, Ronan and JR get into why this trend deserves more attention than it's getting. From wild one-day volume spikes in penny stocks to distorted exchange market share and rebate incentives, they chat about how a handful of ultra-low-priced names are reshaping the trading landscape, and why it's not just noise.

We favor an endearing turd box quite well round these parts, but there exists an irredeemable class of vehicle even further removed from greatness. On this heartfelt episode, the boys single out vehicles that lack any semblance of desirability.

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Mark Stern, founder and CEO of Custom Box Agency, an award-winning boutique specializing in bringing digital offers to life through innovative offline ‘box experiences.’ Today, he’ll share how he made the leap from corporate to startup life, offer practical tips for integrating physical touchpoints into a digital world, and discuss the secret sauce behind building high-impact customer journeys. I can’t wait to dive into his wealth of knowledge. KEY TAKEAWAYS When I mixed physical and digital together with my publication called ‘Entrepreneur Elements’ I people started posting unboxing videos, which a digital-only product can do. Everyone who received the product became an ambassador and lots of organic traffic was being created as a result. During Covid the virtual event game became bloody red, in terms of competition, because everyone became a virtual event expert overnight. But the boxes, and how we were approaching this to get results faster, was an unknown, exciting realm which I went 100% in on and the business skyrocketed from zero to a million in the first year just by pivoting and focussing on this opportunity. What we include inside our boxes is a welcome note, a getting started guide – which, for me is the most powerful sales pieces to orient people on the journey that they’re about to start and see your universe, a journey map – a visual depiction of the recipe that’s going to get you the result, then all the tools and resources. This isn’t SWAG (Stuff Without A Goal), think of it a product development and who we can truly get into your programme and give people the incentive structure to want to take one step at a time. I love data, so I can engineer feedback loops to say, once you’ve hit a certain milestone, how can I get you to provide me with the information I need so 1, I can celebrate you, but 2, it also gives me good intel to make the product you’re making better. BEST MOMENTS ‘In the online space done beats perfect. I approach the standards of the online realm in a corporate way; the client’s either ready or not ready at all.’ ‘If you have a digital product, you have to compliment it with something physical because physical can tap into other modalities and senses that digital can’t.’ ‘It’s not about you, it’s truly about your customers and their needs.’ ‘Boxes can be a tool to take what you’re already talking about/teaching, or the service you’re providing and making it easier for people to have the breakthrough in the tangible way the a digital-only product just can’t.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Mark Stern is an accomplished serial entrepreneur and the visionary behind Custom Box Agency, an award-winning experience design firm headquartered in Austin, Texas. Leveraging his background as a top-ranked strategy consultant at Deloitte, Mark has guided major retail and lifestyle brands through transformative growth initiatives. He holds an MBA from Duke University and has been recognized as a Forbes Next 1,000 Entrepreneur, as well as featured in Joey Coleman’s bestselling book Never Lose an Employee Again.Mark’s passion for merging the physical with the digital underpins his signature approach of crafting “offline-meets-online” experiences. By moving beyond standard swag and focusing on strategic box campaigns, Mark’s team has successfully launched 100+ direct mail initiatives—boosting conversions, slashing churn, and extending customer lifetime value. As a mentor at SXSW, sought-after keynote speaker, and champion for innovative entrepreneurship, Mark remains dedicated to helping businesses of all sizes adopt experience design as a powerful lever for growth.
