Julio is president of the Architecture, Culture and Spirituality Forum, that he cofounded in 2007. His interests focus on the relationship between architecture, culture, and spirituality through the lens of phenomenology and neuroscience. Julio has widely lectured, led symposia, taught, published, or appeared in the media covering these areas. Current projects include three neuro-phenomenological studies of sacred vs. secular architecture. He has received several national and international recognitions. In this conversation, Julio and I look at how sacred spaces are designed to evoke transcendental experiences. We discuss various architectural principles that contribute to the creation of these spaces, the scientific studies that analyze human responses to sacred architecture, and the differences between Catholic and Protestant church designs. Our talk also covered the importance of community in church architecture and the tension between modern and traditional forms of church architecture. Additionally, we considered the challenges posed by consumerism on the design of contemporary worship environments.
It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Julian Bermudez, founder of Psychedelic Integration, about his deeply personal and powerful approach to healing. In this episode, Julian shares his philosophy of psychedelic integration as a sacred return—a coming home to the body, to the heart, and to the version of ourselves that existed before life's pain forced us to adapt. Through his lived experience and the space he holds for others, Julian invites us to see integration not as a checklist, but as a living, breathing practice of transformation. We explore the idea of purpose, reclaiming value, and the path to remembering who we truly are.

My guest today is Henry Burmudez. He became a major artist in his home country of Venezuela in the 70's through the early 2000's. He made a good living and prospered as a creative force in his home town of Caracas. Among his other accomplishments, he represented Venezuela at the 1986 Venice Biennale. In 1998 , with the election of Cesar Chavez, his world began to fall apart. With the collapse of the economy, his collector base evaporated and left the artist with no way of making a living and support his family. With the help of artist Frank Hyder, he was invited to show in Miami Florida. He eventually made his way to Philadelphia where he forged a new life as an artist and in 2024 had a 20 year retrospective at the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia. The exhibit was a survey of his extraordinary reinvention of himself and his artwork in his new chosen home. With the results of the recent election in the US, he is now reminded of the challenges he faced in Venezuela. We will be talking about all of that and what it means to be an artist in the world today.

I'm honored to have Dr. Richard Bermudez, the National Medical Director at Brainsway, joining us. Dr. Bermudez is a pioneer in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a groundbreaking treatment for mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. With years of expertise in neuroscience and psychiatry, he has made it his mission to expand the accessibility and efficacy of innovative mental health therapies. Today, he'll share his journey from electrical engineering to medicine and how it shaped his passion for non-invasive brain stimulation treatments. We dive into the science behind TMS and how it differs from traditional mental health treatments like medication and talk therapy. Dr. Bermudez explains the evolution of TMS technology, including its ability to stimulate specific brain networks through advanced coil designs. We'll also discuss the transformative outcomes TMS provides for patients, as well as its potential for treating conditions beyond depression, from obsessive-compulsive disorder to nicotine dependence. Whether you're a clinician, a mental health advocate, or simply curious about this cutting-edge therapy, this discussion promises to be both educational and inspiring. As we explore TMS, Dr. Bermudez highlights its safety, versatility, and unique role in fostering neuroplasticity. He compares TMS with other emerging treatments like ketamine therapy and discusses the collaborative innovations underway at Brainsway. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in mental health, neuroscience, or the future of non-invasive treatments. [03:32] We've had great success with TMS at Camelback Integrated Health and Wellness. [04:14] Dr. Bermudes started out as an engineer and ended up switching to biology in college. [05:38] He worked in a physiology lab doing neurophysiology research and brain stimulation. He learned that the brain was an electrochemical organ. [06:22] He ended up going into medicine and psychiatry. He became clinically interested in non-invasive brain stimulation. [08:44] Brainsway is like a family with a very collaborative culture. They want to transition into a true neuroscience technology company. [10:03] It's an exciting time for the organization and for neuroscience. [13:23] How TMS differs from traditional medications or therapies. Transcranial means it's across the skull but it's not invasive. They use a high-powered magnet to induce a small electrical current. [15:40] Brainsway developed their technology in conjunction with the NIH and their coils are what are called complex coils. [16:47] 8 out of 10 patients have had a clinically significant change in their depression score. [19:07] There are three brain networks responsible for our mental health and Brainsway has three different helmets and coils. Each one modulates a different network. [21:47] TMS is safe and good for all of our brains. It induces neuroplasticity. [23:22] Deep TMS and standard TMS. Deep TMS stimulates more areas of the networks. [26:54] Functional MRIs and studies related to TMS. [28:33] Neurological changes that TMS produces in the brain. TMS belongs with the other pillars of substance abuse treatments. [30:01] We learn about conditions that TMS is cleared to treat. [39:58] There are different targets or areas of the brain that need to be modulated to affect different brain networks. There's not a lot of evidence that TMS would work for bipolar mania or autism or ADHD. [43:22] We learn about the typical TMS protocol and how long it takes to start to see results. [51:20] Dr. Bermudes talks about accelerated protocols and the use of TMS and ketamine. [55:00] Avoiding toxic conversations and watching the news. You don't want negative experiences on your plastic brain. The patient experience is important and it's good to have a calm, safe, welcoming environment. [57:17] TMS and psychedelics like ketamine. They both have glutamate which is our excitatory neurotransmitter. [59:06] Things to think about when deciding between TMS or ketamine. [01:03:22] Safety profiles of TMS versus ketamine. Safety concerns for TMS include not having any metal in your head and likelihood of having seizures. [01:12:00] Misconceptions about TMS. [01:14:11] Accessibility and insurance cost for TMS. [01:20:34] A device based treatment that doesn't require a doctor or a psychiatrist will help address the shortage of psychiatric prescribers. [01:21:53] It's surprising how many research articles about TMS are available now. -What does codependency look like in women attempting to date outside their culture? -How can codependency with your family prevent you from dating outside your culture (and what are the short- and long-term consequences?) -If you do date interculturally, what should you be prepared to navigate from the reactions/response from your family? Welcome to Episode 157! This week, I'm joined by Noura Bermudez, LMFT, to explore codependency in women who date outside their culture (a.k.a. dating interculturally). Noura opens up about her own experience being codependent with her father and what that relationship was like to navigate when she started to date (and eventually marry!) outside her culture despite his disapproval. Noura describes what codependency looks like in women and their families when they begin to attempt to date interculturally and the consequences of this. You'll hear Noura list what women should be prepared to navigate if their families respond with judgment, shame, prejudice, and threats to disown them. We conclude with steps you can take to cultivate your own autonomy in these situations. It's a must-listen! More on this week's guest: Noura Bermudez is a mindfulness-based therapist who helps women in intercultural relationships experiencing rejection and/or disownment by their parents, live authentically and confidently with the choices they have made about dating. Has experience working with Middle Eastern women with immigrant parents. Practicing therapy for 10 years and has a private practice in CA. www.bermudeztherapy.com www.instagram.com/bermudeztherapy/ More deets on the episode: We begin with hearing Noura's definition of codependency: when someone has to sacrifice their authenticity to have or maintain a connection. Seen when someone disowns themselves or a part of themselves, disowns their needs for something the want–love, approval, affection, etc. Noura emphasizes how there is a perk or benefit to our codependency–we just usually aren't conscious of it. Noura opens up about codependency in her own life, including in her relationship with her father. She describes growing up and trying to meet his expectations and standards as a Muslim. This led to her keeping her dating life a secret from him since she dated outside her Muslim and Middle Eastern culture. She ended up marrying outside her culture and, while this put a strain on her relationship with her father, she was eventually able to heal it by putting intentional distance in their relationship and through conversations. We shift gears to Noura's specialty: dating interculturally! She describes what codependency with family can look like in women who date outside their culture: living a secret life, hiding, secrecy, yearning for her family's approval, not feeling okay until the parents' feel okay, strain in the relationship, feelings like resentment, and attempts to convince/negotiate with family to approve of their partner. Sounds like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, yes??? Noura lists the short- and long-term consequences of codependency in these women, including sadness, a sense of grief, abandonment, underlying unhappiness, and attempts to conform to the family's expectations by dating within the culture. Noura's opinion: codependency and conforming with family's expectations is not sustainable. Noura encourages women who want to date outside their culture to prepare for their family having their own reaction, getting in touch with their values and their ‘why,' leaning on their support system, and inviting conversations. For the harsher realities like racism, prejudice, and disownment that may come when attempting to date outside one's culture, Noura encourages seeking professional help, setting boundaries, and cultivating one's own autonomy. We conclude with Noura emphasizing how radical acceptance, intentional distance, and having conversations with family can help the most in these situations. Thanks for coming on Noura! And thank you for being here, dear listener! PLEASE: Rate. Review. Subscribe. Share. We need more ratings on Spotify! TY! www.codependummy.com See you next week!
