Episode 224: Community Health Workers Dr. Arreaza: Today we will discuss a topic that, frankly, every single person listening, whether you're a medical student, a resident, a nurse, a family doctor, or any primary care provider, needs to really understand. We're talking about community health workers (CHWs). We are joined by our stellar medical student; you may be familiar with her voice from previous episodes about insomnia. Moira, welcome, please introduce yourself. Moira: I want to be upfront about why Community Health Workers matter to you specifically. If you've ever felt frustrated that your patient with uncontrolled diabetes keeps missing appointments because they can't get a ride, or that your heart failure patient was readmitted because nobody checked whether they could afford their medications, then you already understand the problem that CHWs are designed to solve. Dr. Arreaza: We're going to give you the definition of a CHW, the evidence behind their effectiveness, how they fit into your care team, the return on investment, and practical steps for integrating them into your practice. We have pulled information from a lot of peer-reviewed sources, and we want to share them with you. So, Moira, let's start with the basics. What exactly is a community health worker? Moira: Great question, and it's one that even literature struggles with, because there are so many titles for this role. Community Health Worker is an umbrella term that encompasses more than 20 different titles including outreach workers, promotores or promotoras de salud, community health representatives, lay health workers, peer educators, patient navigators, and many more. The American Public Health Association defines CHWs as frontline public health workers who are trusted members of or have an unusually close understanding of the communities they serve. Arreaza: And that trust is so important in health care. CHWs are not physicians. They are not nurses. They do not diagnose or prescribe. But they are like a bridge connecting the medical environment, social services, and the community to reduce gaps in healthcare delivery. Moira: Exactly. In the United States, the role was formally recognized in the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which includes several sections highlighting the key roles CHWs play in achieving important goals of healthcare. ________________ References: Aguerrebere, M., Rodríguez-Cuevas, F. A. J. Bermudez speaks to Emily Everett about her story “The Sixteenth Brother,” which appears in The Common's fall issue. With a fable-like feel, the story explores the dynamics of family and gender roles in Morocco, as fifteen brothers scheme to convince their youngest sibling to allow the sale of the family's ancient and opulent riyad. A. J. discusses the story's framing device—a storyteller relaying it, almost like gossip—and how it creates both intimacy and distance. She also talks about her work in film, and the interplay between writing for the page and for the screen. A. J. Bermudez is an award-winning writer and director who divides her time between Los Angeles and New York. She is the author of Stories No One Hopes Are About Them, winner of the Iowa Short Fiction Award and a Lambda Literary Award finalist.

In this debut episode of Return to Her, a new monthly series on Pleasure in the Pause, host Gabriella Espinosa sits down with lifestyle host and midlife influencer Lizzie Bermudez for an honest conversation about walking through over three years of her daughter's mental health struggles while putting her own life completely on hold.Lizzie shares what it felt like to be her daughter's primary caretaker in survival mode, how she navigated the isolation and stigma surrounding mental health, and the turning point when she finally realized the best thing she could do for her daughter was take care of herself. This is a powerful story about caregiving, crisis, and the slow, messy, beautiful journey of coming home to yourself again.Lizzie is a lifestyle host, podcaster and midlife influencer. People don't know what to say, so they say nothing.DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy) gave her family tools and a shared language to navigate emotional regulation and crisis.Learning that two things can be true at once expanded her capacity to hold conflicting emotions without judgment.Coming home to herself feels like lightness. Waking up smiling again, cortisol releasing, opening to friendships after years of isolation.Laughter was medicine. Even in the darkest days, finding one thing to laugh about each day became a survival tool.If you're in the thick of caregiving and losing yourself, if you're slowly coming back, or if you're still figuring it out—this conversation reminds you that returning to yourself is always possible. In this deeply transformative episode, Melissa sits down with therapist and integration guide Julian Bermudez, whose voice is so resonant you'll want to press “repeat.” Julian offers a trauma-informed lens that merges somatic awareness, deep presence, psychedelic-assisted healing, and self-inquiry to address survival patterns that are buried in the body and psyche.Together, they explore what trauma really is, how it shapes identity, and the soulful path back to authentic connection. You'll discover how healing isn't about fixing what's broken—it's about returning to who you are beneath the pain.We explore:• How trauma affects our identity and perception• The ways we adapt to survive—and how those adaptations show up today• How to get curious about our patterns rather than judging them• Tools for rebuilding inner relationships with gentleness and joy• The role of psychedelic integration in healing and awarenessConnect with Julian:Website: https://www.psychedelic-integration.netInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/psycheintegration/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julian-bermudez-ma-ccmp/FIND MELISSA:MYOK on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mind_your_own_karmaMYOK on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mindyourownkarmaMYOK on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@MindYourOwnKarma#MindYourOwnKarma #SomaticHealingJourneys #TraumaHealing #PsychedelicIntegration #SelfInquiry #SomaticTherapy #InnerLiberation #EmotionalHealing #TransformationalHealing #HealingFromWithin #SomaticHealing #PsychedelicTherapy #TherapistPodcastGuest #JulianBermudez

Muzzleloader Mayhem In The Elk Woods - George BermudezIn this episode of the Out of State Hunter Podcast, Chad sits down with his friend George Bermudez to break down an unforgettable Arizona muzzleloader elk hunt that almost fell apart—twice. George's father drew a rare tag with minimal points, but the excitement quickly turned to frustration when a primer mix-up and a stuck bullet sidelined the muzzleloader early in the hunt. What followed was a whirlwind of problem-solving, a bent ramrod, multiple trips across the state, and an outpouring of support from the hunting community to get the rifle back in action.Despite the setbacks, George and his dad stayed in the unit, kept grinding, and eventually relocated the bull they had glassed days earlier. After a fast-paced stalk and a perfect shot at under 300 yards, the bull went down—only to stand back up moments later, creating a tense, unforgettable sequence that capped off the rollercoaster week. The story has everything: gear mishaps, community generosity, long-range glassing, miles of hiking, emotional highs and lows, and the payoff that only comes when hunters refuse to quit.If you love stories of perseverance, tough hunts, and family traditions in the elk woods, this episode delivers in a big way.GEORGE BERMUDEZInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/backcountry_g/ OUT OF STATE HUNTER@outofstatehunter - https://www.instagram.com/outofstatehunter/ DEFIANCE MACHINESave 10% off at Defiance Machine with the code OUTOFSTATE10Website -https://defiancemachine.comInstagram -https://www.instagram.com/defiancemachine/ REVIC OPTICSWebsite - https://www.revicoptics.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/revicoptics/ ARROWHEAD RIFLES - Website -https://arrowheadrifles.comInstagram -https://www.instagram.com/arrowheadrifles/ GOHUNTUse the code OUTOFSTATE when you become an Insider and get $50 in GOHUNT Gear Shop Credithttps://www.gohunt.com MCMILLAN STOCKSSave 10% at McMillan Stock with the code OUTOFSTATE10Website - https://mcmillanusa.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/mcmillanstocks/ #outofstatehunter #elk #elkhunting #arizonaelk #muzzleloaderhunting #westernhunting #publiclandhunting #huntingstories #storyfromtheseason #longrangehunting #glassing #backcountryhunting #huntingcommunity #fatherandsonhunt #neverquit#giveaway #outdoorsman #publiclands #conservation #huntingpodcast
In this episode of ABA On Call, Rick and Doug sit down with doctoral student Christina Sena from the University of Pittsburgh to explore how ethical principles guide mentorship, clinical decision-making, and professional development in Applied Behavior Analysis. The conversation spans three critical areas: the ethics of mentorship and what it truly means to guide another professional beyond mere supervision; the ethical implications of using or rejecting punishment and extinction, highlighting the analyst's duty to understand behavioral processes while safeguarding dignity, consent, and least-restrictive practice; and finally, the BACB's decision to exclude podcasts from supervised fieldwork hours, which raises broader questions about how evolving technologies challenge traditional standards of evidence, accountability, and ethical oversight in training the next generation of practitioners.

He helps people heal trauma, navigate identity, and integrate psychedelic experiences—not through rigid protocols, but through presence, somatic work, and honest self-inquiry. My guest this week is psychedelic integration guide and facilitator, Julian Bermudez, who joined me last month from his home in Portland, Oregon. Julian shares raw personal details of his own experiences with trauma and healing through psychedelics, which has deeply informed his approach of how he works with clients. You can learn more about his practice at his website, psychedelic-integration.net And, this interview will be joining my expanding collection at my YouTube Channel of "Psychedelic Oregon," featuring interviews and talks with those in my state of Oregon who work with psychedelics.
Why does healing feel so complex—especially for highly sensitive people? In this deep and compassionate conversation, integration therapist and trauma guide Julian Bermudez joins Daphnie to explore the intersection of sensitivity, attachment wounds, and somatic healing. Together, they unpack what trauma really is (and isn't), why HSPs often carry emotional burdens they were never meant to hold, and how to begin reconnecting with the self beneath survival patterns. If you've ever been told you're “too sensitive” or wondered why you feel so deeply, this episode offers validation, clarity, and hope. Julian brings a grounded, intuitive perspective, and the belief that healing is a return to your wholeness—not a fixing project. We explore:The link between sensitivity and early traumaWhy many HSPs adapted by becoming emotionally hyper-attunedThe path from survival patterns to self-trust and inner connectionWhether you're on a healing journey, integrating a psychedelic experience, or simply seeking deeper understanding, this episode will help you remember: your sensitivity is not the wound—it's the lens. And you were never meant to heal alone.

In this profound episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty is joined by somatic therapist and trauma guide Julian Bermudez for a deep, grounded conversation on healing trauma, reclaiming authenticity, and understanding emotional survival patterns. Together, they unpack what trauma really means—not as a clinical label, but as a disconnection from the self—and how real healing begins by turning inward, not by reinventing. Julian shares insights on how suppressed emotions manifest in daily behaviors, how societal rewards reinforce trauma patterns, and why healing is not about becoming someone new—but returning to who you've always been beneath the pain. A must-listen for anyone seeking emotional clarity, post-traumatic growth, and embodied wholeness. About the GuestJulian Bermudez is a therapist and emotional healing guide specializing in somatic awareness, post-psychedelic integration, and trauma recovery. He offers deep support for those ready to stop performing, soften survival strategies, and return to a state of connection, presence, and authenticity. Key Takeaways Trauma isn't just what happened—it's what happens inside us when we don't have the support to process it. Suppressing emotions and becoming overly agreeable are common survival patterns that often begin in childhood. Healing is not about fixing—it's about remembering and returning to the self we abandoned to survive. Authenticity isn't found, it's uncovered by listening to the pain in our body and tending to the unmet needs underneath it. Real recovery begins with curiosity: “What is this feeling trying to teach me?” Disconnection is not a flaw—it's an intelligent adaptation to trauma. But we can choose to reconnect. Facing what scares us within often reveals an inner child needing care, not punishment. Healing doesn't require radical reinvention. It starts with compassion, presence, and slowing down. .
