Today I’m sharing about emotional availability. Do you know what messages you’re sending to others about your willingness to “go there”? We all crave deep meaningful connections and it can be uncomfortable to show up and move towards growth and expansion. Let’s talk about the importance of emotionally availability in individual relationships and also on the community level. Suggestions for being more emotionally available: Learn to be present with the pain. Learn to process your emotions. Have difficult conversations with your people. Learn to sit with discomfort. I can’t wait to explore this with you! We all have patterns in relationships—some of them are easier for us to spot than others. Have you ever wondered where these patterns come from or why it’s so hard to change them? In today’s solo episode, I’m talking all about the concepts of adult attachment theory. From the anxious style to the avoidant style to the style we are all working toward (secure!), we are covering the basics of relationships patterns in order to support one another in amplifying what’s working and switching up what doesn’t. None of us are stuck in these patterns permanently, but we do need to know and understand why we fall into them so easily so we can utilize the right tools and strategies to manage them differently. On today’s episode, I am sharing my healing journey and what healing means to me. I take you through my tangle with cancer at 21, facing my own mortality, moving across the country for graduate school, the loss of my father, my commitment to social justice, my healing and how I am continuing to heal. The Uses of Sorrow by Mary Oliver (In my sleep I dreamed this poem) Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift. Today I am talking with Bianca Gragg, LCSWA. Bianca is a community member and revolutionary mother in Asheville NC. Born and raised in the border city of El Paso Texas, Bianca has ancestral roots in Mexico, Germany, and Spain and identifies as part of the Latinx community. Bianca is deeply invested in supporting the healing of others in community as well as her own healing—-recognizing their interconnection. She most recently served as a school based therapist and has co-developed a local initiative that is aiming to disrupt systemic bias and racism in our local school systems, Colorful Pages Coalition (formerly the Colorful Pages Project, as she discusses in this podcast). This initiative addresses racial equity issues in schools by bringing books that feature children of color written by authors of color for our youth to see themselves positively portrayed and amplified. Bianca shares her healing journey, how she has found strength through recognizing the value of our own self-work and how it ripples out into our community and into the world. She also encourages everyone to educate themselves on racial equality, have the hard conversations and be willing to make mistakes. Bianca is currently raising multi racial and ethnic children with her supportive husband in the Appalachian mountains. In this episode, I’m sharing the principles of healing I use in my therapy practice and daily life! These principles capture the important aspects of healing and remind us that we are all here to heal--regardless of where we’ve been or what we’ve experienced. Guiding principles of this podcast: Principle 1: Healing is unique to each person. There is no one right way to heal. Principle 2: Healing is for everyone. Whoever you are, you have the opportunity to heal. Principle 3: Healing sometimes hurts. The expectation to be perfect keeps us stuck and trapped in our old patterns. Also, growth is just really uncomfortable sometimes. Principle 4: We heal in service of our future selves. We heal for those who come before us and those who come after us. Principle 5: Healing happens in relationship and community. We are here to learn and grow with each other! How did this episode land with you? I would love to hear from you!
