Summary In this episode of Develop This Podcast, Dennis Fraise interviews David Gantz, a trade law expert, to discuss the current state of tariffs and international trade. They explore the chaotic nature of recent tariff threats and implementations, the historical context of trade agreements like NAFTA and USMCA, and the implications of new tariffs on trade relationships with Canada, Mexico, and China. The conversation delves into the impact on consumers, manufacturing, and the long-term effects on US relations with Canada, Mexico, and China, as well as the greatly diminished role of the WTO in global trade. Takeaways The current tariff situation is chaotic and rapidly changing. Historical tariffs like the 1930s Hawley-Smoot tariff are comparable to today's tariff levels on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China. NAFTA and USMCA have significantly shaped and improved trade relationships in North America for more than 30 years. New tariffs undermine and conflict with existing trade agreements such as the USMCA. Manufacturing shifts are influenced, inter alia, by tariff policies, both economic and political pressures, and the costs of altering supply chains. Consumers may face immediate price increases on their purchases due to tariffs imposed on Mexico and China generally, and imports of steel and aluminum from all foreign sources. Retaliatory tariffs from trading partners will escalate tensions and further disrupt trade. Long-term damage to US-Canada relations may take decades to repair. China is actively seeking new trade partnerships to mitigate US tariffs. The WTO's influence is waning as the U.S. and other countries pursue unilateral trade policies that conflict with basic WTO obligations.

Reageren? Mail dedag@nos.nl Presentatie & montage: Elisabeth Steinz Redactie: Rosanne Sies en IJsbrand Terpstra

Mexico is now one of the few countries in the world that elects its judges, including at the Supreme Court level, by popular vote, rather than by appointment. International trade has flourished in recent decades. In the U.S., which is both the world's largest importer and exporter of goods and services, trade has lowered the costs of everyday goods, raised the living standard, and fueled job growth. But it has also eliminated some jobs, mostly in manufacturing. As a result, support for free trade has declined. Today, American policymakers are embracing industrial policies, which are designed to promote specific sectors, especially manufacturing, in a way not seen since the 1980s. President Biden's “Buy American” policies are a prime example of this. How can we rebuild trust in trade and use it to ensure that the U.S. remains competitive globally? In this episode we sit down with C.J. Mahoney, former deputy U.S. trade representative and chief U.S. negotiator for the USMCA, in 2020, and David Gantz, the Baker Institute's Will Clayton Fellow in Trade and International Economics. In recent days, there has been intensifying debate inside Israel over whether the security concerns raised by Prime Minister Netanyahu (regarding the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egypt-Gaza border) are legitimate or just sand being thrown in the gears of the hostage negotiations? Are there actual substantive objections to the concerns the Prime Minister is raising, or are the concerns really just with Netanyahu himself? Is the problem the message? Or the messenger? When the news broke out in Israel, about the execution of six hostages, it seemed like the public was split in half over Netanyahu's policy to retain the Philadelphi Corridor. That picture, Mike and Gadi argue, is distorted in more than one way: there was no deal to accept or reject; the Philadelphi Corridor is not the main point of contention; Israel is not equally split between the two position; the Gallant, Gantz and Eisenkot game plan is more complicated than it seems; and the Never-Bibi crowd just suffered a strategic defeat with the collapse of its attempt at a massive protest and a general strike.   Plus: Tucker Carlson, Daryl Cooper and the rising tide of antisemitism on the American right.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. After last week's escalation along the northern border, US special envoy Amos Hochstein is in the country to try to head off a war with Hezbollah and advance efforts to rein in hostilities along the “Blue Line” between Israel and Lebanon. What are his chances? An unnamed senior Israeli negotiator told AFP yesterday that dozens of hostages are still alive and that the Israeli negotiating team had green-lit the Biden plan and is waiting for Hamas's answer. Berman brings up an idea that is slowly gaining support, that Israel must change the paradigm of the war in Gaza and consider it as just a first step in taking on all the Iranian proxies that make up the hydra-like monster that is Iran.   A document by the IDF's Gaza Division warning of a potential attack by Hamas and en masse hostage-taking that was internally circulated on September 19 and reportedly brought to the attention of at least some senior intelligence officials, was ignored. Berman explores the report and discusses some reasons why -- tragically -- this intel wasn't acted upon. For more updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. On Tuesday I got back from an eight-day trip to Israel and the West Bank. I happened to be there on the day that Benny Gantz resigned from the war cabinet and called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to schedule new elections, breaking the unity government that Israel had had since shortly after Oct. 7.There is no viable left wing in Israel right now. There is a coalition that Netanyahu leads stretching from right to far right and a coalition that Gantz leads stretching from center to right. In recent days, there have been a lot of war-related developments that have taken place in Israel and outside of Israel. So it was good that wr had the opportunity to catch up with Haviv Rettig Gur as Shavuot came to a close in Israel. In this episode, we wound up having a spirited conversation about: I.The mood in Israel days after after Operation Arnon, and also why the day after the successful resuce operation we saw Benny Gantz's long anticipated exit from the unity government; II. The ultra orthodox or 'Haredi' IDF exemption bill that passed in the Knesset; and III. Hamas's rejection (yet again) of Israel's ceasefire proposal.

Benny Gantz, a key member of Israel's war cabinet, resigned from his post on Sunday. His announcement came one day after Israeli forces rescued four hostages held by Hamas in an operation that killed scores of Palestinians. Gantz, who's also Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's chief political rival, said Netanyahu is “preventing us from reaching real victory” and called for new elections.President Joe Biden wrapped up a five-day visit to France on Sunday. While the trip was nominally about commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Biden also used it to defend the idea of democracy itself, drawing parallels between World War II and the war in Ukraine. Behind the scenes, European leaders are privately panicking over the prospect of a second Trump term. McKay Coppins, senior staff writer at The Atlantic, says he encountered “an undercurrent of dread” in almost every conversation he had with European officials while traveling across this continent this spring. And in headlines: A New York probation official is set to interview former president Donald Trump today following his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records, Conspiracy theorist and Info Wars founder Alex Jones asked a bankruptcy court for permission to liquidate his personal assets to pay the families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims, and the head of the United Nations' World Food Programme says Sudan could become the “world's largest humanitarian crisis.”Show Notes:What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Today's Headlines: On Saturday, the IDF rescued four Israeli hostages during an operation in Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp, killing 270 Palestinians, according to Hamas's Gaza Health Ministry. The US provided intelligence support but did not participate directly. There are still about 120 hostages in Gaza, with 43 presumed dead. Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu's chief political rival, Benny Gantz, announced his party's withdrawal from Netanyahu's coalition, criticizing his handling of the conflict and calling for early elections and a commission to investigate October 7th. This leaves Netanyahu's war cabinet dominated by ultra-right-wing ministers, likely leading to a more aggressive stance. In European news, far-right parties gained ground in the EU parliamentary elections in France, Germany, and Italy. Marine Le Pen's National Rally Party doubled the votes of President Macron's party, prompting him to dissolve the lower house of parliament and announce snap elections. Italy's Giorgia Meloni and Germany's Alternative for Germany party also saw significant gains. However, the majority of the European Parliament remains with centrist parties, led by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. In the US, the Department of Justice and FTC are investigating Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia for antitrust issues in the AI industry, part of broader scrutiny of major tech companies. Additionally, Trump's former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, pled not guilty to nine felony charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Arizona. His trial, along with that of Michael Roman, is set for October 31st. Finally, May's jobs report showed the US added 272,000 jobs, exceeding expectations. Job growth was strongest in healthcare, government, and leisure and hospitality. Average hourly earnings increased, while the unemployment rate rose slightly above 4% for the first time since January 2022. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. It is day 247 of the war with Hamas. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Israel celebrated yesterday after the IDF announced that it had rescued Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv from eight months of Hamas captivity in Gaza. Horovitz shares his impressions of the mood of the country. Protesters at rallies in Tel Aviv and across the country on Saturday night called for new elections and the return of the hostages held in captivity in Gaza. The protests at the same time as war cabinet minister Benny Gantz was meant to give a statement at the deadline of his self-imposed ultimatum of whether or not to stay in the government. We hear what may be some of Gantz's considerations. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to visit the region starting tomorrow, even as Israel awaits Hamas's response to the hostage deal proposal pushed by US President Joe Biden. Could the rescue operation reframe the negotiations in any way? On Friday, Israel, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were added to the United Nations' so-called “list of shame,” which is attached to an annual report released by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's office that documents alleged rights violations against children in armed conflict, sparking outrage in Jerusalem. Horovitz weighs in. For more updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. It is day 223 of the war with Hamas. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan in our Jerusalem offices for today's episode. Five Israeli soldiers were killed and another seven were wounded, including three seriously, in an incident of so-called friendly fire in northern Gaza's Jabaliya on Wednesday evening, the military announced today. Prior to the official announcement of the soldiers' deaths, last night Defense Minister Yoav Gallant sounded the alarm to force the hand of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take steps and promote a reasonable option for governance of the strip -- in part to prevent more soldiers' and civilians' deaths. Horovitz puts the speech into perspective. Yesterday, Netanyahu revived a 2022 proposal by cabinet minister Benny Gantz to lower yeshiva students' age of exemption from military service from 26 to 21. Today, the Attorney General weighed in and stated the Gantz bill is based on outdated data and therefore opposes it because it doesn't reflect today's reality. The bill has since been approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation this morning. But are there really any winners if this bill moves forward? The official date for the next elections are October 2026. Horovitz explains why Netanyahu must move the date forward and call for a new democratically validated mandate of his leadership -- or cede the throne. For the latest updates, please see The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: 5 soldiers killed, 7 hurt in ‘friendly fire' incident in northern Gaza's Jabaliya Gallant to PM: Reject Israeli military, civil rule of Gaza after Hamas; I won't allow it Full text: Gallant demands PM rule out Israeli military, civil control of post-Hamas Gaza Netanyahu says he'll advance Haredi IDF enlistment bill that lowers exemption age To save and heal Israel, Netanyahu must quit or at least face the electorate ICJ's urgent hearings over IDF's Rafah operation spell more trouble for Israel THOSE WE HAVE LOST: Civilians and soldiers killed in Hamas's onslaught on Israel THOSE WE ARE MISSING: The hostages and victims whose fate is still unknown Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Jeremy Gantz, contributing editor at In These Times, to discuss the recent unionization efforts at Trader Joe's. Then, she speaks with Leah Goodridge, Commissioner on the New York City Planning Commission and former member of the New York City Rent Guidelines Board, to discuss efforts to support rent stabilization in the city. First, Emma runs through updates on the incumbent victories in yesterday's PA primaries, Trump's legal woes, the Senate's Ukraine-Taiwan-Israel aid package, new mass grave reports coming out of Gaza, Biden's new labor regulations, Elon Musk's desperate Tesla promises, a DOJ settlement, the Supreme Court's anti-labor agenda, and fascist legislation coming out of Idaho, Tennessee, and North Carolina, before watching Summer Lee's phenomenal speech in the wake of her massive victory against a Pro-Israel challenger. Jeremy Gantz then joins, diving right into the major recent developments in the bargaining process between Starbucks and Starbucks Workers United, with Atlanta hosting the first genuine sit-down bargaining session in almost a year, before stepping back to walk through the two years of hardline union-busting, despite consistent pushback from both the NLRB and the general public, with only the negative change to their public image pushing them back to the table. Next, Gantz expands to the greater context of the retail industry, with major companies like Trader Joe's and REI operating their own en-masse union-busting campaigns, exploring why the decentralized nature of the industry, as well as the high employee turnover rates, make these particularly difficult organizing efforts. Wrapping up, Jeremey walks Emma through the role of the ongoing suit sponsored by SpaceX and joined by Starbucks attempting to undermine the NLRB, and what the future of these unionization drives will likely entail. Leah Goodridge then joins, first bringing Emma through her own experiences working with New York's housing industry, and the major issues facing the affordable housing sector, both in its policy and access, and in the greater construction and maintenance it requires. Expanding on this, Goodridge explores the ever-present power struggle with developers and landlords on one side, and tenants and homeowners on the other, tackling how the former group can both manufacture the public rhetoric and villainize their opponents, often presenting their domination over the industry as heroic or necessary for a functioning of society. After touching on some of the major issues in what makes up the affordable housing market (unaffordable, single-bedroom units), Leah and Emma look to the role of the Faircloth Amendment in killing federal investment in the expansion of the affordable housing market, and pushing the responsibility for constructing and maintaining the infrastructure almost entirely onto the private sphere. Next, Goodridge touches on the major factors of the broker system and the epidemic of vacant units (often used as speculative assets) in driving up housing costs, before she and Emma dive deep into the topics of rent control and Tenant's Rights, unpacking what these terms entail and how the media completely misrepresents the role they play in equalizing the power dynamic between landlords and renters, before wrapping up with a brief assessment of Squatter's Right's minor (yet unsurprisingly overblown) role in the conversation. And in the Fun Half: Emma covers Elon Musk's unsurprising response to Tesla's cratering profits and stock price (make unachievable and absurd promises), Garrett from VA on the growing extraction of profits from medical clinics by insurance companies, Rick from Baltimore explores how he came to MR, and Kowalski from Nebraska gives his takes on the rent control and Big Tech conversations from the day. The MR Team also watches the harrowing footage of (content warning) a Zionist counter-protester getting bonked by a flag, listens to some powerful reflections from a Columbia University anti-zionist Jew, and gives some much-needed aesthetic advice to Trump's attorney. Newt Gingrich has a stunning parallel for the ‘persecution' of Donald Trump, plus, your calls and IMs! Gaslit Nation
Trump's Shadow Foreign Policy

Remember when Jared Kushner tried in late 2016 to establish a secret back channel to talk to Russia? Jared and Ivanka ran the Trump transition team, with Paul Manafort operating from the shadows, where he blooms like mold, pretending to have taken a step back to avoid the heat of, well, having been outed by a Ukrainian investigative journalist for being a highly paid Kremlin operative. The latest back channel between the Trump Crime Cabal and Russia is Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán, the Tiger Beat idol of CPAC. This Friday, on International Women's Day no less, Orbán and Trump will meet at Mar-a-Lago, where America's nuclear secrets get their own cabana. For months now Gaslit Nation has warned that Orbán is the new Manafort, the Kremlin's guy to make sure Trump comes to power, making their shared autocratic dreams come true. As Trump's coup against our democracy continues, Andrea discusses Trump's blatant shadow foreign policy with Russia mafia expert Olga Lautman and analyst Monique Camarra of the Kremlin File podcast, and the many challenges and bold action needed for democracy to fight encroaching authoritarianism, before it's too late.  The sharks are circling, with China setting up police stations in Hungary, a European Union state. Will our democracy survive? As always, it comes down to us, as grassroots power is the most reliable power we have left. See the all new Gaslit Nation 2024 Survival on our homage – GaslitNationPod.com – for simple ways for us to pitch in as it's all hands on deck!  Fun announcement for our Gaslit Nation community! On April 11 at 7 pm ET we're holding another MAKE ART workshop exclusively for our subscribers at the Truth-teller level and higher on Patreon. Got questions about the creative process or the business side of things? Ever wanted to make art but didn't know where or how to start? Want to know how to bring your art out into the world? Ask Andrea anything! Art is survival, and we need your mind and creativity more than ever! To get access to that, be sure to subscribe to the show at the Truth-teller level or higher on Patreon.com/Gaslit. Thank you to everyone who supports the show – we could not make Gaslit Nation without you!
