In this study, I want us to focus in on two words. The first is victory, and the second is restoration. And you recall that David was most discouraged, and the reason for that was very simple. There were those from his own people that wanted to stone him to death, they were so grieved about what had happened in that city called Ziglag, and we see that not only was the city destroyed, and there was great spoils taken from the people, but also the women, and the sons, and the daughters, they too were taken into captivity, and the people, in a very human way, needed someone to blame. Well, we left off last week in chapter three of Ezra, and now we're ready for verse eight. And again, we're seeing a restoration. We saw last week that under the leadership of Ezra, there were people that they returned to Judah, more specifically, they came to Jerusalem, and they began to do something. Well, we're now ready to move into chapter three of the book of Ezra. Now, this third chapter is about change. This is who God is, and what did we see? We saw that there was people in exile, the Babylonian exile, but God, at the right time, exactly after these 70 years were completed, He began to do what He said He was always going to do, and that is to bring the people back to the land. Well, last week we started the book of Ezra, we completed the first chapter, and now we're ready for chapter two. Now, what are we going to encounter in this chapter? Again, the faithfulness of God. I cannot speak too much about God's faithfulness, He is forever faithful. Now, God's faithfulness is always related to His truth. What does that mean? It means that God is going to reveal truth, and then He is going to act in light of His truth. Thing that we can say about the life of David is that it was difficult, and why was that? Not necessarily because of sin or disobedience, but rather David, as we've talked about several times, he was a man after God's own heart, he wanted to please God, he wanted to serve God. And when we are committed to the purposes and the plans of God, be prepared to suffer. The world does not like faithful people, and those who belong to the world will come against you. In this installment, we're going to see that David is going to be rejected by the Philistines. Now, in one sense, that is a very wise decision, because David has proved over and over that he is loyal to God. Let's begin with a very simple principle. We are going to see in an undeniable way that Shaul, the king of Israel, was not a faithful man. Now this has been documented in many different ways throughout First Samuel, but now we're going to see how evil of a leader he is, that he has no faith, he does not rely upon God. He does not believe in Him. Rather, we are going to see that He engages in sorcery. Why? Because of fear. David is indeed a man of God, and David is going to demonstrate humility, and he is going to do something that shows that he is not an enemy of King Shaul, but rather a servant. I want to begin this message by talking about spiritual bondage. Anyone who is still in bondage to sin is not a true believer, and there are certain manifestations which reveal to us that a person is not a believer, and what are some of those. We're going. going to learn tonight about this woman, Avigil, and this is a faithful woman who did not think of herself what she wanted, what she desired, but rather she was a woman who wanted to bless others, and we see that in her relationship with David. Now, when she approaches David, she calls him consistently her Lord. Why does she do that? Well, we saw last week that the children of Israel experienced a great victory, but we also saw that there was pride among some of what we might call soldiers, that when the Word of God commanded the people to divide up equally the spoils, some of the soldiers did not want to Do that. They wanted to keep everything for themselves, because these other individuals, what did they do? The scripture says they remained with the vessels, or we could translate that with the supplies, they did not go out and risk their life. Well, in this passage of Scripture that we're going to study, we're going to see that the concept that is emphasized is that of vengeance, and we know that the scripture says Vengeance is Mine, saith the LORD, meaning that God is the only one who is holy enough, righteous enough, that can execute vengeance in a way that will bring forth righteousness. David is going to reveal something most significant. And what is that we're going to learn in our passage today, that King Sheol is not operating because he does not know something. We're going to see that, according to the law of Moses, that there were sacrifices and offerings which were required for every day, and we see that on special days, like the new moon, which represents a new month, and also for the biblical festivals I'm talking about The Lord's appointed days. Today in the passage of scripture that we're going to study, we are going to witness truly a tragedy. Why? Because of the behavior and actions of King Saul. Now we have seen that Saul has no regard for the Word of God. He is obsessed and committed to one thing, and that is what He desires. Bitter soul. Now we're talking about those who were in distress, they would be unhappy, those who were indebted, meaning indebted to King David, and those who had a bitter soul. All of this, even though we're talking about three different groups of people, they all had something in common. And what was that they were not pleased with how their life was going. They wanted a change. And when we look at the situation, they probably were blaming one individual. And who was that? The king? We have seen that King David is on the run. He knows that Shaul who is the king of Israel, but not the legitimate one, because we know that God has rejected Shaul and has anointed David to be the legitimate king, but Saul is rebelling against God, and he wants to put David to death. And what does David do? Well, the Bible says that he flees to a specific location. Well, we are going to continue in the same chapter we started last week, and of course, I'm speaking out about the book of Numbers and chapter 26 now, for the most part, what's happening here. A census is being taken, and we're going to continue. We went through many of the tribes, but there are still a few tribes that are left, and we're going to see something else. We're going to see as God always does. He makes a distinction between the children of Israel, in a general sense, and the Levites. In a general sense, we should be truthful people. That means that most of the time, we should always be honest and we should tell things exactly as they are. But there is one biblical exception, and what is that? Well, we are going to be looking at a scripture that the best way that we can describe it is a census, so people are going to be counted. Now we need to realize something, and that is in the Scripture, a census has a unique word that really speaks to it, and that word is to lift up. And we'll see this in a moment. So what does that mean? To lift up, and the implication is to lift up one's head. Well, there's two things. Well, we have seen that what has figured in significantly in this last part of chapter 20 of First Samuel is what's known as the new moon. Now that is a new month in Judaism, and the word for month is the word Chodesh, which is derived from the word for new. But here's something important. Well, we see biblically that there has been some judgment. We've talked about last week how Balaam did something that he taught Balak, the king of Moab, how to cause Israel to stumble, and what was that stumbling into idolatry? Israel consistently has that problem with struggling with idolatry, and that shouldn't surprise us, because we all do, what is idolatry? We have learned that King Shaul desires to put David to death. We have also seen that there has been a disagreement between David and his good friend, Yonatan. Now this disagreement concerns one thing. We have seen that Yonatan thought that his father was not truly committed to putting David to death, but we're going to see today that it's clear that Shaul is obsessed with one thing, and that is holding on to his kingship, and that means putting David to death. One of the most godly relationships or friendships in the Bible is between David and shaul's oldest son by the name of Jonathan or jehonatan. Now we see in the scripture that they shared a Godly love for one another, and this love caused them to be loyal to one another in order that David would not die, but rather David would be spared by the help and the assistance that Jonathan gave him. Well, we have been focusing in on an individual, and that individual is known as Balam in Hebrew, and we see in the Scripture, in many places, in the New Testament, that Balaam was not a godly individual. Did God speak to him? Yes, he did. But the problem was this, when we look in, let me give you a citation. If you look sometime to the epistle of Jude, what's called in Hebrew Yehuda. In this passage that we're going to learn from it today, there is an important concept, and that concept is called in Hebrew Rosh Chodesh, or the new month. We see that the calendar is very important in the Scripture.
