Millennials vs Classics is a show about books, but mostly about everything else. Each episode host, Gillian, and a special guest read a classic novel then do their best to discuss how the book relates to the modern reader.
This episode Gillian and her friend Olivia discuss the book "Lives of Girls and Women" by Alice Munro. They discuss, unsurprisingly, the lives of the various girls and women of the novel, skating bodysuits, and how not to lie about where you lost your virginity. Yah we spoil the book, but it's not a big deal, you'll still read the book.
This episode Gillian is talking with her friend Ted about "Peter Pan" by James M. Barrie. They touch on the reading the book after knowing the characters first through the adaptations, the Jungian Neverland, whether the author could be considered a feminist, and so much more. Do they spoil the book? Honey, you already know the ending. Do they write a treatment for a Mad Max themed sequel: Heck. Yes.
After a year long hiatus (wherein Gillian went full millenial and moved to an organic farm) we are back with a wonderful episode on "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera. Gillian and Hasti try to untangle the negligent parents, troubled lovers, and philosophical quandaries of the novel while keeping down the bile summoned by hearing sex referred to as "Making Love". Do they spoil the novel? Nope!
Gillian and her friend Danny read "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle. They battle with the whether or not they like the book, whether or not Charles Wallace should have had a nickname, and whether or not they can relate the book to Drag Race.
This week Gillian and her guest Eliza delve into the world of Anne of Green Gables. They take on the novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery through queer and feminist lenses to discover why this book is undoubtedly a #Classic.
On this episode of Millenials vs Classics Gillian and her guest Dan discuss The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. They get into their favourite chapters, what they would ask the prophet, and Quvenzhané Wallis (how could they not)!
On this episode Gillian and Aleks discuss Lysistrata by Aristophanes. They get into what tropes the play shares with drag, Alek's amazing Bernie Sanders impression, and reading the play as a tragedy.
We're back for season two and to kick it off Gillian and Erika are unpacking Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. They talk about interventions for overworked detectives, thirteen guys names "Steve", and whether or not we read the right Christie book.
Gillian and her guest, Claudia, actually talk about Margaret Atwood's amazing novel The Handmaid's Tale! They actually talk about the book! Do they spoil the book? Of course, they actually talked about the book for once!!
On this episode Gillian and Amy discuss beef tea, pickled limes, and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Listen if you enjoy spot on impersonations of Louisa May Alcott, fan theories about Jo's sexuality, and taking part in something as trivial as the Pickwick Society. Also, Amy has her own podcast called "Amyrika". You can find it here: https://amyrikaproductions.wordpress.com/
In episode 6 Gillian and George discuss A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare...except they actually talk about The Real Housewives' authenticity, Vin Diesel's legacy, and Emma Thompson's brilliance more than the play. Do they spoil the play? No, to reiterate: they mainly talk about The Real Housewives. This week Gillian and her co-worker Eva discuss the Gothic masterpiece Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. They also took the time to use Pine Nuts as a metaphor for love, sing the Kate Bush song, and (like always) imagine marrying their cousins. Do we spoil the book? Yes. Do we recap the most recent episode of This American Life for roughly ten minutes? Yes, but it works.
On this episode Gillian and her friend Anna talk about The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Listen to this episode if you ship Zack Galifianakis with Jim Gaffigan, Eddie Redmayne with the dad from Mary Poppins, and Edward Cullen with any of the Real Housewives. Do we spoil the book? Yes. Do we expose Pharrell's deepest secret? You'll have to find out!
Just in time for Galentines Gillian and Olivia (of DreamTeamReads.com) discuss Emma written by Jane Austen. Listen to figure out why they think Emma is the original Kardashian, what "Kerbable" means, and how this all relates to Mean Girls. Number of times we spoil the book: 5-6 Number of times we reference Clueless: 5000-6000
This week Gillian and Marika take on Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. They discuss homeschooling, Making a Murderer, and kissing your cousins. Do they spoil the book? Oh, most definitely. Do the read some scintillating FanFiction about Victor and his monster? Oh, MOST definitely.
This week our co-producer, Juan Garrido, and I get together to talk about the best Mary-Kate and Ashley movie, time-lapse videos, and 100 Years of Memes. If you're worried the episode contains spoilers for the book, don't be. If you're worried the episode contains spoilers for the LEGO Justice League Movie, stay away.
