Whats up fam this is a little bit of a family meeting. We need to discuss this "red pill" movement, the manosphere, and the infamous figure of Andrew Tate. This was a long discussion about general relationship dynamics in todays age. In part 1 of this conversation, we discuss Andrew Tate's rise to prominence and what he has brought to the minds of young men. We also talk about the influence of role models on an impressionable generation. To help with this discussion, we talked to Charles Wallace a current PhD student in sociology.

We're no strangers to books with religious overtones or stories meant to impart a moral lesson, but this episode's journey to Camazotz with Madeleine L'Engle's classic work A Wrinkle in Time is definitely the most overtly religious book we've tackled. Jesus, Charles Wallace... or Jesus= Charles Wallace? We're not entirely sure. We're also not entirely sure if our extreme irritation with a 5 year old makes us terrible people. This book is a straight up romp where plot is concerned, but we lose the signal a bit with what the author is saying about gender roles, the nature of evil, faith, physics, and the world. We're discussing all things Who, Which and Whatsit, tesseracts, pulsating brains, and soft fluffy beasts to try to figure it out though! This week we watched another patron voted movie, A Wrinkle In Time, about family, love and friendship. The Murray children, Meg and Charles Wallace, search for their father, Alex, and bring their new friend Calvin along for the ride. Together they beat the odds to 'tesser' through time and space to find their father amongst the cosmos, getting past gossiping flowers, grumpy gurus, and ultimately defeating an emo big brain, like they literally had to fight a large brain. But in the end we learned that you can't have light without the dark, or dark without the light. In the brightest night, you will see the darkest light, or something like that.
This week we go on a cross-dimensional interplanetary journey to learn more about tesseracts, centaurs that aren't centaurs, the big "Black Thing", mind-controlling brains, furry tentacles, and isn't Charles Wallace one of the hosts of 60 Minutes? This is a great conversation because we dive into the idea of creating a program around all the things Charles has learned about elite performance from his +20 years as a football coach. As we talked, it became clear that Charles has a passion for coaching quarterbacks. They have a great opportunity to maximize their abilities and opportunities, but it requires discipline and a systems approach to developing their careers. The dread and anxiety of IT is coming for you… just like this episode. We have some difference in opinion between which is better here, the book or the novel. It depends on what you're looking for, long story short - but our journey to that conclusion is pretty ridiculous. We also talk about how Chris Pine is our favorite damsel in distress, Jordan ALMOST catches feelings, and Emily admits the hero's journey needs to die. The most important thing to understand about A Wrinkle In Time is that it is based on a novel that is aimed at pre-teens. So it is positive. Get over it. But the fact that it is based on a tween novel means the movie moves slower than it should and some plot points are oversimplified. It's sad because I wish I had more positive things to say about the movie. Minor spoilers ahead. Director Ava Duvernay's Wrinkle is a love letter to pre-teen girls. It encourages them to stand up for what they believe in and not be afraid of their intelligence. Protagonist Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is consistently encouraged to acknowledge her beauty. This is when the movie is at its best. When Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) takes Meg aside to explain how everything in the universe has led to her being exactly who she needs to be, the movie sings. It is exactly the message that tween girls -- and maybe everyone -- needs to hear. And I can't speak enough positive things about 9-year-old Deric McCabe, who plays Charles Wallace. The entire third act of the movie is placed on his shoulders and he rises to the occasion as the best actor in the movie. When Light Turns to Darkness However, any light that escapes from the film is certainly dimmed by the first 30 to 45 minutes. Audiences must endure pacing that is at a crawl and acting that feels like it belongs in a high school auditorium. The first act does little to draw in those who haven't read the book. It introduces characters like Mrs. What's It (Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) with such a casual nature that it's hard to be invested in the characters. Calvin (Levi Miller) receives no introduction whatsoever which makes him a character of little consequence. The film tries, but it never quite captures the magic that has caused so many children to fall in love with it over the years. Final Rating: 7/10

Pastor Robin and Cass dive deep into Christian theology this week in their wrap-up of Disney's A Wrinkle In Time (as part of their "What You Can Watch on Netflix" series!). Based on Madeline l'Engel's book of the same name, A Wrinkle in Time is a fantastical sci-fi adventure that hones in on those oft-depicted angsts of teenager-dom. Meg, our main character, is struggling with school and her social life while being preoccupied with the mysterious disappearance of her father. Her little brother, Charles Wallace, while wonderful, is an eccentric and precocious boy who is also teased mercilessly by his classmates. He enlists the help of some magical women to take him, Meg, and their friend Calvin on a journey to find their missing father. We explore the message of ubiquitous love, truth, and the spiritual implications in A Wrinkle in Time, as well as our nerdy film-critic takes on the artistic direction and how it helps the messages hit home. And maybe comment on Oprah's make-up a little bit.

Michelle Butler Hallett and I take a deep dive into the recent movie adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. Along with obsessively analyzing every aspect of the book and movie we talk about the process of adaptation itself, as well as about Madeleine L'Engle, Ava DuVernay, Star Wars, and what SHOULD have happened to Charles Wallace.
A Wrinkle in Time starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy KalingFrom visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light. Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg's classmate Calvin O'Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.Sweet Country starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, and Hamilton Morris Warwick Thornton's award-winning Australian western set in the outback of the Northern Territory, 1929. When Aboriginal stockman Sam (newcomer Hamilton Morris) kills a white station owner in self-defence, he goes on the run. Co-stars Bryan Brown and Sam Neill. Sam and his wife are pursued across the outback. Sergeant Fletcher (Brown) leads the posse with the help of tracker Archie (Gibson John) and local landowners Fred Smith (Neill) and Mick Kennedy (Thomas M. Wright). Fletcher is desperate to capture Sam and put him on trial for murder, but Sam is an expert bushman and has little difficulty outlasting them. Eventually, for the health of his pregnant wife, Sam decides to give himself up and is put on trial in the courtroom of Judge Taylor (Matt Day)Faces PlacesAgnès Varda and JR have things in common: a passion for and the exploration of images in general, and more precisely, for places and for ways of showing, sharing, and exhibiting them. Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create open air photography galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a film in France, far from cities, during a trip in JR's photographic (and magical) truck. Through chance encounters and prepared projects, they reached out to others, listening to them, photographing them, and sometimes putting them on posters. This film also tells the story of Agnès and JR's friendship, which grew stronger throughout the film shoot, between surprises and teasing, and while laughing about their differences.

This week we saw a double feature of Love, Simon and A Wrinkle in Time. Do you like to read the book first? Have you ever watched the movie and then read the book? Well that’s what we did for this episode.----more---- Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised. With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met. A Wrinkle in Time It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger. “Wild nights are my glory,” the unearthly stranger told them. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract”. Meg’s father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. But can they outwit the forces of evil they will encounter on their heart-stopping journey through space? We’re going to review A WRINKLE IN TIME, which opened this weekend to so-so reviews and $33 million at the box office, coming in second to BLACK PANTHER, which continues its box office domination. Directed by Ana DuVernay (who also directed the documentary THE 13TH and SELMA), and based on the beloved book by Madeleine L’Engle. The movie stars Storm Reid as Megan Murry, a middle school student whose brilliant scientist father (played by Chris Pine) has disappeared while working on a way to travel through the universe. This is not a spoiler, but four years after his disappearance, Megan, her younger brother Charles Wallace (played by Deric McCabe) and her friend Calvin (played by Levi Miller) must search the galaxy for him before something called The It (not to be confused with with Pennywise IT) destroys the universe with its negativity. Luckily, they have the help of three, ummm, beings to help them on their adventure: Mrs. Whatsit (played Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (played by Mindy Kaling) and the god-like Mrs. Which (played by god-like Oprah).
