Stāsta Dzīvā muzeja "Senās Kuldīgas stāsts" gide Inga Spēkaine; pārraides producente – Dina Dūdiņa-Kurmiņa Hercoga Jēkaba valdīšanas laika beigās Kuldīgā sākās zviedru laiki. Jēkabs gan mēģināja zviedru iebrukums atrisināt diplomātiskā ceļā, bet tas neizdevās. Viņš pat tika saņemts gūstā un kopā ar ģimeni pusotru gadu turēts apcietinājumā. Pamatīgajam haosam sekoja mēris, pēc tam bads. Kādreiz varenās Kuldīgas atdzimšana sākās vien 19. gadsimta vidū, kad pilsētā strauji attīstījās rūpniecība. Tika uzbūvēta Hiršmana adatu fabrika, Alekšupītes krastā – Goldberga ziepju fabrika, bet par lielāko fabriku pamazām kļuva "Vulkāns", kur ražoja sērkociņus. Tā kā Kuldīga tobrīd bija Krievijas impērijas sastāvā, tad saražotās preces ceļoja arī uz Krieviju. Dziesmu svētku dzimšanas gadā – 1873. gadā – tika uzsākta ķieģeļu tilta būve pāri Ventai, un jau gadu vēlāk darbi bija pabeigti.  Tilta pamata balstiem izmantoja arī akmeņus no kādreizējās Zelta pils. Tobrīd 164 metrus garais tilts bija modernākais Eiropā un šobrīd tas joprojām ir trešais garākais ķieģeļu tilts Eiropā. Pirmo reizi uz tilta bija iespējama divvirzienu kustība – uz tā bez pūlēm varēja samainīties pretimbraucošas karietes. Pirmā pasaules kara laikā Pārventas pusē uzspridzināja divus tilta posmus. Labošanas darbu laikā amatniekiem neizdevās izveidot precīzu ķieģeļu salikumu, tāpēc saspridzināto vietu salaboja ar dzelzsbetonu. Nelielās atšķirības joprojām ir saskatāmas. Cara valdīšanas laikā neogotikas stila ēku logus un durvis ar vilcieniem veda no Krievijas galdniecībām un jau gatavas iebūvēja ēkās. Logi bija daudz zemākas kvalitātes nekā tie, kurus ražoja Latvijas amatnieki – viņi logus pielāgoja katrai ēkai individuāli. Kuldīgas vecpilsētā joprojām var redzēt uz akmens pamatiem būvētas koka ēkas, kuras šobrīd ir Valsts nozīmes kultūras pieminekļi. Ēkas datētas ar 17., 18. gadsimtu, un nostāsti vēsta, ka šīm dzīvojamām mājām zviedru laikos pamati likti no izlaupītās Zelta pils akmeņiem. Amatnieku bez būvprojektiem būvētās mājas turas vēl šodien. Vēlākā posma namiem – adatu fabrikai, sinagogai un šī brīža Kuldīgas novada pašvaldības ēkai – jau ir saglabājušies ēkas plānojumi.

Guests: Blue Jays top prospect Trey Yesavage, Gold Glove centrefielder Daulton Varsho, rehabbing Jays starter Alek Manoah  This week in Deep Left Field, we head down to the farm and talk to right-hander Trey Yesavage, the Jays' first-round pick last July, as he prepares to make his debut with the Buffalo Bisons - the fourth team in the Jays' system for which he has suited up in this, his first season in pro ball. The 22-year-old has allowed just 45 hits and notched a whopping 134 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings this year at Dunedin, Vancouver and New Hampshire combined. He'll start for the Bisons on August 14 and the big leagues will be the next stop. That final promotion could very well come as soon as next month. We also chat with Alek Manoah following a disappointing rehab outing in Buffalo. The former all-star and Cy Young finalist is recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery and in the first Triple-A start in his rehab assignment, lasted just an inning and two-thirds. Also, Daulton Varsho joins us to talk about watching from the sidelines as the Jays built the best record in the American League and then picking up right where he left off, power-wise, when he rejoined them.

Who killed JFK? What forces made the mind and actions of Lee Oswald? And what does it mean to be an agent of history or something called fate? DDSWTNP probe these and other big questions in multiple new episodes on Libra released over the coming month. June may be the time of Gemini, another sign of doubles in the Zodiac, but for us it's a month for the balance scale, tipping one way or the other, with some Librans like Lee not balanced at all but (as David Ferrie puts it) “somewhat unsteady and impulsive . . . Poised to make the dangerous leap.” In Episode 25: Libra (1), we discuss where DeLillo began in the 1970s in his build-up to Libra, as far back as Americana and other early novels' mentions of JFK, Oswald, the CIA, and the overwhelming Warren Report. We examine what makes DeLillo's Oswald a great but frustrating character and a portal for new dimensions in the author's examination of language, naming, and self-making. We ask what's behind the clear shifts in style, tone, and humor DeLillo makes for this historical novel, as well as the power of his place/date chapter structure, the influence of existentialist fiction, and some alternate titles he considered.
