The following interview is with Stefon Bristol, the director of the 2024 sci-fi thriller movie BREATHE. BREATHE stars Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich, Quvenzhané Wallis, Sam Worthington and Common.
It seems like the axe is falling over at the Grio. Of course, I'm talking about Byron Allen's media conglomerate. Well, an individual with knowledge of the situation did tell TheWrap.com that members of the podcast and video teams have been laid off, along with managing editor Christy Oglesby. The individual also told TheWrap that Allen Media Group is making strategic changes to better position the company for growth, but it does result in expense and workforce reductions across all divisions. The company did come out with their own statement but the spokesperson declined to talk about the specifics regarding the layoffs. The Grio was acquired by Byron Allen Media Group in 2016. They also own 27 network affiliate broadcast television stations in 21 U.S. markets. Byron has done very well. And I'll tell you one thing I know to be true of him: he always has a plan and he usually lands on his feet. So I'm sure that he'll be okay. We do know that. And hopefully all of the other layoffs will find other jobs. Looks like we will not be seeing Will Smith on the red carpet Will is refusing to take part in the publicity campaign for his new movie, "Bad Boys: Ride or Die." We all know he does not want to talk about the infamous 2020 Oscar slap and the state of his marriage with Jada Pinkett Smith. You know, he really doesn't do interviews anymore, but I do have to say that he showed up and showed out at Coachella recently. Will popped up on stage at the end of Colombian singer J Balvin's set. He rapped the lyrics to his smash hit, "Single Men in Black," while dressed in his 1997 character Agent J's trademark black suit. Yep. It still fits. Go Will. As its title suggests, Stefon Bristol's Breathe is a claustrophobic and tense film that will leave you gasping for air. A prescient science fiction piece, Breathe is set in the near future where the earth has a depleted oxygen supply. A small family eke out an existence, but when strangers arrive at their doorstep paranoia seeps into their lives. Are these new arrivals friends or foes? Bristol's film comes with a stacked cast - Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich, Quvenzhané Wallis, Common, and Sam Worthington - and they all bring added gravitas to proceedings. Wallis in particular delivers an impressive turn as the film's central character. Stefon Bristol joins this episode of the podcast to talk about making Breathe, its powerhouse cast and he also drops some details on his upcoming Indiana Jones-style collaboration with Spike Lee.

At NINE years old she was nominated for "Beasts of the Southern Wild" in the lead actress category. Isaiah Hill plays Jayce Carson, a character loosely inspired by pro basketball player Kevin Durant, which examines his experiences as a young phenom on the AAU circuit before he made it to the NBA. Cronin Cullen breaks down the 12 Jungian Archetypes, giving an overview of each archetype's characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. He reveals why Castability breaks down scenes into archetypes, and how each character seen on TV and Film can fit into one of these 12 character types. Understanding which archetypes best showcase your acting skills helps you market yourself accurately to those around you, while being able to write for these archetypes allows writers to create well-developed characters and gives casting more specificity as they go into casting a role. — What are Archetypes? — Archetypes, Stereotypes, Stock Characters, and Typecasting — The Lover (ex: Claire Danes as Juliet, "Romeo & Juliet") — The Hero (ex: Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope") — The Wizard (ex: Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, "The Matrix") — The Rebel (ex: Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, "Scandal") — The Explorer (ex: Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade") — The Sage (ex: Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi, "Karate Kid") — The Innocent (ex: Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, "Forrest Gump") — The Everyperson (ex: Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie, "Annie") — The Caregiver (ex: Viola Davis as Aibileen Clark, "The Help") — The Creator (ex: Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory") — The Jester (ex: Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, "Pirates of the Caribbean 1: The Curse of the Black Pearl") — The Ruler (ex: Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa, "Black Panther") Episode Resources: Quiz 1: Discover Your 12 Jungian Archetypes Quiz 2: Jungian Archetype Test by Psychologist World Castability's Archetype Breakdown The Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell Email admin@castability.actor with all your archetype thoughts! ──────────────────────────── Learn more about the Castability app right here. The year is 2004 and the nominees are: 1. Keisha Castle-Hughes - Whale Rider 2. Naomi Watts - 21 Grams 3. Diane Keaton - Something's Gotta Give 4. Charlize Theron - Monster 5. Samantha Morton - In America - In 2004 Charlize Theron received her first Oscar nomination and win for playing Aileen Wuornos who was a prostitute and serial killer. This haunting performance remains one of the best in Oscar history (IMO). This was a very strong year with very diverse performances each brilliant in their own way. Naomi Watts gave a devastating performance in the movie 21 Grams playing a woman who loses her children and husband in a hit and run accident. Samantha Morton plays an Irish immigrant trying to make it in America while trying to overcome the loss of her son. Diane Keaton plays in a much more light hearted rom-com defying age in a brave (and funny) performance in Something's Gotta Give. Finally Keisha Castle-Hughes gives a captivating performance in Whale Rider becoming (at the time) the youngest Best Actress nominee at 13. The current record is held by Quvenzhané Wallis who was nominated at 9. Some of my favorite quotes from our conversation: “You need to bring yourself to the role in order for it to feel authentic.” “I’m there to guide my clients in the entirely of their career, not just the next audition.” “You need a good headshot… that’s your calling card.” “It’s not the prettiest picture that catches their attention… it’s something in the eyes, some kind of emotion that makes casting want to call them in.” “Watch out for the scammers… someone approaching you in the mall is probably not the right person.” “Please, please, please do not get involved in the Mama Drama.” “It’s very important to network here. So much of this industry is about connections.” “I think you should get involved in short films if you can, so you start to develop a reel.” “It’s more important than ever to have a great self-tape setup. It doesn’t have to cost a lot.” “Trust that your agent or manager are doing everything they can to get you seen.” “Your rep should be passionate about you.” “If you want to be a great theatre actor, go to college.” You should do community theatre. It’s great. That’s the first step to getting over stage fright.” “Patience is very important in this industry.” “Win the room, not the role. If you win the room, they’ll keep calling you back over and over.” Follow Sherry Kayne here: Website: https://moxieartists.com/ Instagram: @sherrykayne

Episode 45 Fresh Perspective explores "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (2012), directed by Benh Zeitlin and starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry. This is part one of our two-part “Girl Power”-themed discussion, in celebration of strong performances by young African American actresses and magic realism in film. Presented in the shaky but imaginative perspective of a child, this film pulses with the life blood of an impoverished and hurricane-torn but content Delta community free of the barriers of civilized society. The heart of the film beats with the will power of a young girl mature beyond her years as she tries to piece together a dysfunctional domestic life with fragmented memories and comes to profoundly understand the nature of life and death. Guess what, listeners? It's time for a reboot!!!!! We had a listener suggestion this week to reboot The Parent Trap (which is a brilliant idea - we totally need more suggestions from you at home!) and it spun out of control. So, not only do we reboot this amazing story to include Quvenzhané Wallis as the twins, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as the dad and Uzo Aduba as the mom, we ALSO manage to pick apart how HORRIBLE the titular parents of this film really are! Honestly, try not to think about it too much because it can really change your feelings on this childhood classic. So, take a listen if you want to know how we update this film for our modern times and how we manage to fix all the parental nonsense from the first film(s). And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other!
Rod and Karen are joined by Reeta (@theNFLChick)to discuss football watching etiquette, the NYPD work slowdown, Quvenzhané Wallis name is pronounced incorrectly, Gay priest, Big Brother racism again, Huckabee ponders if Jay-Z is pimping Bey, bad renter in Toronto, Hood mom and sword ratchetness. Two sequels, one remake, and a film you may never see. It's a bizarre and exciting Movie Date podcast! On the sequels front, we have "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb." Our remake is the reboot of "Annie," starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz. And the movie that may never see public eyes is "The Interview," Seth Rogan and James Franco's new movie that inspired terrorist threats from North Korea. There's also listener mail this week and, as always, trivia!
Ridley Scott's Moses epic Exodus: Gods and Kings is reviewed by Adam Smith; investigative journalist John Sweeney and Baltimore-based crime novelist Laura Lippman discuss the phenomenon of the 'Serial' podcasts; The Shoemaker's Holiday director Phillip Breen tells Samira Ahmed about his RSC production of Thomas Dekker's Elizabethan comedy of class, conflict and cobblers in love; and Quvenzhané Wallis and director Will Gluck on their new film adaptation of Annie. Producer Jerome Weatherald.
Apologies. This week's Movie Date podcast is coming to you late, from an abandoned room in Rafer's office building. But there's a good explanation, we promise! Once you settle into the lousy sound quality and get past the tardiness, you'll hear Rafer and Kristen's reviews of Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and Chris Rock's "Top Five." You'll also hear the Movie Date team's thoughts on the new Netflix series "Marco Polo" and on this year's Golden Globe nominations. And, as always, there's trivia!
