This episode's guest is Celina McMichael. She’s an accomplished runner with an impressive race resume, including Boston qualifying credentials. Even more incredible than her running history though is the fact that she has accomplished so much while battling an ongoing string of eschemic and mini strokes that have spanned the past 20 years. Celina joins this episode to share her story with the Runner Moms community, including how she has had to fight with the medical community time and again to be taken seriously. It’s a cautionary tale for us as women to always listen to our intuition and to advocate for ourselves when we know that something isn’t right. The dreadmill. The hamster wheel. The treadmill. It’s the tool that most runners love to hate. But, for mom runners, it’s often the only outlet that we have available to run. Whether due to ice and snow in the winter or being home alone with small kiddos who won’t sit well in a running stroller, you may need to run on a treadmill to keep up with your running goals. But, let’s face it, treadmill miles aren’t always the same as outdoor miles. Ludgina from TreadChic joins this episode of the Runner Moms podcast to help us reframe our mindset around the treadmill from one of drudgery to one of opportunity. If you haven’t yet followed along on one of Ludgina’s treadmill running workouts on YouTube, head over and check out her TreadChic channel. Her energy and excitement for treadmill running is infectious and she has a ton of awesome videos for all levels of runners. If you’re currently struggling with body image issues, disordered eating or are feeling the weight of diet culture’s unrealistic standards, pause and consider how long you’re willing to continue that cycle. Look back on all of the years that you’ve struggled with it all. And how many more years lay ahead of you. Then, opt out. Obviously it’s not easy and it could take years and years of work but it’s a heck of a lot better than the alternative. It also means you’ll be opting into a lifestyle of respecting your body and fueling it properly. It means you’ll have more energy for running, for momming, for life. One route that many mom runners are pursuing on their path toward opting out of diet culture is intuitive eating. Kayla Fitzgerald, a Registered Dietician Nutritionist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor joins this episode to help us explore the principles of intuitive eating and how they may be of use to all of us runner moms. Kayla received a bachelors of science degree in Dietetics from Kansas State University and completed her Dietetic Internship at the Medical University of South Carolina where she worked as a Clinical Dietitian. She is now the co-owner of Nutrition Rites where she specializes in Intuitive Eating, Medical Nutrition Therapy, Sports, Allergies, and General Nutrition. In this episode, Kayla explores the principles of intuitive eating, offers actionable tips to help mom runners tune out the damaging messages of diet culture, provides crucial advice for helping our kids grow up as intuitive eaters and much more. Can you remember a time when you didn’t feel like you needed to lose a few pounds? If you can answer yes to that question, you’re one of the few lucky ones, because most women can’t. This episode explores several topics that come up regularly in the Runner Moms community: Body image, eating disorders and unhealthy relationships with food and fitness. These issues are, unfortunately, very pervasive in our society thanks to the traps and lies of diet culture. To explore these issues and provide useful and actionable advice to the Runner Moms community, Amy Harman joins the show as this episode's guest. Amy is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a certified eating disorder specialist. She has addressed body image issues at many professional conferences and community events and recently released a book titled, Perfectly Imperfect. The book explores many of the topics that are discussed in this episode and provides compassionate strategies to cultivate a positive body image. We as a community of runner moms can empower ourselves to escape the traps of diet culture and lead healthier and happier lives without worrying incessantly about the appearance of our bodies. We can also choose to view fitness as a celebration of what our bodies can achieve rather than as a penance for what we’ve eaten. Even more, we can break the cycle and prevent our kids from dealing with these issues. How much time is available in your weekly schedule to just be still? If you're like most moms, the answer to that question is... not much, if any. Zuisei Goddard, author of Still Running, joins the show to introduce the concept of meditation in motion and help you, as a runner mom, find a better way. If you currently feel like you lack mental clarity or are always craving stillness, but can never seem to find it, you aren't alone. Most moms are too busy managing their households, juggling work and family schedules and putting everyone else's needs before their own that they never seem to have any time left over to just be still. As mom runners, running is usually our main alone time. Rather than treating running as just another task to check off of your to-do list, you can use it as an opportunity to achieve increased mental clarity, recharge your energy, embody your life through your breath and more. In this episode, Zuisei provides advice for finding the the 'why' behind your running practice and discusses how to use mindfulness to discover what we're feeling and how to respond to those feelings skillfully rather than reactively. We also talk through the importance of teaching children how to accept the discomfort of boredom rather than continually entertaining them with activities and screens. Whether you're interested in learning more about the idea of meditation in motion or have been searching for ways to bring more stillness and clarity to your life, this is a must-listen episode for all runner moms. Born in Mexico City, Zuisei graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in English: creative Writing and a minor in Psychology. Soon after, she moved to Zen Mountain Monastery in upstate New York, where she lived and trained from 1995 to 2018. Today, Zuisei is a writer and Zen teacher and is currently based in New York City. It’s a story of overcoming body image issues, depression, and making the choice to keep moving forward even in the face of setbacks. Stephanie also speaks to the essential ingredient of learning to love yourself on the path toward increased wellness. Stephanie describes how running saved her life in several ways:"I really feel like running has saved my life. Not only from a health perspective but just my brain because, when I started at 260 pounds and so so depressed, like, I was just the whole time I’m training and I’m out there and I’m talking to myself. I’m like, ugh, you’re too fat to do this. You’re never good enough. Then, as I keep going, I realize that I’m starting to turn those thoughts into positive stuff. When you reach a point where you’re so sad and then finally something like, a light comes on, whatever you’re doing at that moment, it’s like, oh, I have to do more of this. So, for me, that’s what running was. Like it’s this tiny glimmer of light where all of the sudden my, you’re too fats turned into you’re doing this," said Stephanie.Support the Runner Moms podcast: https://www.patreon.com/RunnerMomsConnect with Stephanie on Instagram: @changingstephanieSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/RunnerMoms)
