The Southeastern 16 crew of Graham Doty, Jay Greeson and Chris Lee break down the Austin Regional. Topics include: Texas faltered down the stretch and lost the overall No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed (falling to 2) after threatening to run away with the SEC regular-season title. The Longhorns still got the title thanks to the margin for error they built in March and April. Texas will be without No. 1 starter Jared Spencer and reliever-turned starter (and UTSA transfer) Ruger Riojas faltered late, but the Longhorns have plenty of talented pitchers in Luke Harrison, Max Grubbs, Kade Bing, Jason Flores, Thomas Burns, Andre Duplantier II and Grayson Saunier to take up the slack. Maybe the biggest question is whether the offense, which should get a boost with preseason All-American Max Belyeu back from injury and more at-bats under his belt. Can Rylan Galvan and Will Gasparino hit better in the tournament after their numbers declined late in the year? Can freshman sensation Adrian Rodriguez step up? The Longhorns are the team to beat, even if not clicking on all cylinders. UTSA looks to be the biggest challenger in the regional, with a lineup full of All-AAC players that included conference player of the year Mason Lytle. The Roadrunners have .400-plus on-base guys throughout the lineup (and had a .425 mark as a team) but can arms like Robert Orloski and Connor Kelley carry UTSA to a regional title? Kansas State rode home-run hitters Dee Kennedy (11 HR), Maximus Martin (14), Keegan O'Connor (16) and Seth Dardar to an at-large bid but top-end pitching might hinder the Wildcats' advancement hopes. Houston Christian will have its hands full and needs Parker Edwards to throw a great game to have a shot at a win. Texas beat Houston Christian earlier in the season.

To the best of my knowledge, Kris Schultz is the second“merch slinger” I've met that went on to pursue a lyrical life as a troubadour in her own right.  My first experience was with Texas songwriter Kayla Ray as she first visited KC slinging merch for Jason Eady.  I love Kris' trajectory…. check this out.  Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Kris was obsessed at an early age with the country songs of heartbreak and loss on the jukebox at a bar she visited regularly with her parents.  At an early age, she showed promise in several sports, especially the field part of track and field eventually accepted a scholarship to throw Javelin at Kansas State University, where she majored in Radio/Television Journalism.  While competing in the Texas Relays during her college career, she fell in love with Austin, TX.  And soon moved there with only a box of books & CDs, a small stereo, and a bag of clothes.  She walked into the city-ran Austin Music Network TV channel, asked for an internship, and soon was spending her days proof-checking videos of local music and taking in every note. But she still hadn't thought of playing music herself. After years assisting musicians as merch slinger, roadmanager and van driver, but never playing or singing herself, Kris eventually  acquired a guitar and began writing songs. She released her full-length album, Standard Issue Heart, inOctober 2021, has played such legendary venues as The Saxon Pub and Cactus Café in Texas, toured in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeastern US, has been featured in the live performance series “Songs In Places.”  Kris recently found herself in the Heartland and we connected to make an appearance on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show happen.   Enjoy this performance and conversation with Austin transplant Kris Schultz.  Tasty Brew Music Radio Show "Showcasing the best of Americana/Roots Music in andfrom the Heartland!”Fridays 10 AM to Noon CST on 90.1FM KKFI Kansas CityCommunity Radio !!Since 2010, spinning a “tasty brew” of Americana/Bluegrass/Country/Roots Music… empowering the art of the song! This week, 124 countries agreed at the World Health Assembly in Geneva on measures aimed at preventing a future pandemic. The agreement very strongly favours a “One Health” approach, appreciating how so many potential pathogens originate in human-animal interactions. Still to agree on the terms of how to share pathogens and information with global science and vaccine researchers, eventually the treaty will need to be signed by at least 60 countries. But can the inequity between countries of the global south and north, and issues of intellectual property, be bridged?A new study on origins of the Nigerian mpox epidemic points strongly to zoonotic crossovers and mobility of wildlife in West Africa. Edyth Parker of Redeemer's University in Nigeria describes their phylogenetic tree. Can the bovine form of H5N1 flu infect pigs, and could domestic pig populations then provide a crucible for further variants to develop? Jürgen Richt of Kansas State University and colleagues have been investigating. We need to keep up vigilance.Lucy van Dorp of University College London, working with a consortium including London's Crick Institute, has been looking at a moment in the past when human activity provided an opportunity for a bacterial human pathogen to change its lifestyle. According to their phylogenetic tree, the bacterium Borrelia recurrentis (which causes louse-borne relapsing fever in humans) adapted and moved from ticks to human body lice around about the same time as humans started using woollen clothing. And Susan Lieberman, VP for International Policy at the Wildlife Conservation Society, was in the trenches of the Pandemic Agreement negotiations, and shares some of her hopes for its success. Real strength shows up when life knocks you down and you choose to rise with gratitude, faith, and community. Dr. Douglas Burton shares how a life-altering diagnosis transformed not just his health journey, but his entire perspective on what it means to truly live well. From the operating room to the other side of the patient experience, he opens his heart about the emotional weight of caregiving, the spiritual awakening that came through illness, and the small, intentional shifts that have brought him greater peace than ever before. His story is a powerful reminder that joy is not found in doing more—it's found in slowing down, showing up, and surrounding yourself with love. Key Takeaways: Slowing down and creating space for joy can be more healing than constant striving. Practicing daily gratitude builds emotional resilience and a deeper sense of peace. Community support is a critical part of mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Faith and surrender can bring clarity and calm when facing uncertainty or illness. True healing isn't just physical—it's also spiritual, relational, and deeply personal.   About Dr. Douglas Burton: Douglas Burton, M.D. is the Marc and Elinor Asher Spine Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS and his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, TX. He completed his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center and completed spine fellowships at The Texas Back Institute in Plano, TX and at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. In 2003 he was awarded the Marc and Elinor Asher Spine Professorship. Dr. Burton's clinical practice is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of complex spinal disorders in both pediatric and adult patients. In addition to his primary practice location at the University of Kansas Hospital, he also travels to both Hutchinson and Salina, KS for a monthly outreach clinic to provide health care to patients in rural parts of Kansas. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Interurban Orthopaedic Society, the North American Spine Society and the Scoliosis Research Society, where he is the incoming Chair-Elect of the Research Council and member of the Board of Directors. He served as President of the Federation of Spine Associations from 2018 to 2019. In 2019, The American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons announced a new partnership, the American Spine Registry (ASR), which will be jointly owned and developed by both organizations. Dr. Burton currently serves as co-chair of the Data Use Committee for the ASR. His research interests include the development of disease specific health related quality of life instruments and the study of complications and outcomes associated with spinal deformity surgery. He has authored or co-authored over 236 peer reviewed publications and serves as a Deputy Editor of Spine Deformity, the official journal of the Scoliosis Research Society. In 2006 he helped found and remains on the Executive Council of the International Spine Study Group. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich reviews a paper published in The Bovine Practitioner with the first author Madeline Mancke from Kansas State University. The objective of this study was to determine potential associations between Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) serum concentration of cattle at initial bovine respiratory disease (BRD) treatment with the risk of retreatment or mortality at 60 days. BRD is the most significant disease in beef cattle and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Developing prognostic tools may be valuable for managing individual cases. cTnI is a protein that is released into the circulatory system after myocardial damage and may be useful as a biomarker for prognostication of BRD cases. Mancke walks through the results of the paper which demonstrated that 8/318 samples had high cTnI levels and animals with high cTn1 concentrations had a significantly greater probability of not finishing the 60-day post-enrollment period. Cattle with high cardiac troponin concentrations at initial BRD treatment were more likely to have negative clinical outcomes but, in this study, very few animals had high cTnI levels. Mancke provides information about potential future research opportunities to better manage BRD cases in the feedyard.  The Bovine Practitioner is the peer-reviewed journal published by AABP. The journal publishes original research, case studies, review articles and case studies that are intended to provide information to the practicing cattle veterinarian. The journal is available open-access online and print volumes are available for purchase. There are no publication fees for authors and the peer review and submission process is managed online.
