Most of us want to be in good shape and improve our health span, not just our life span. In this episode, Angela talks to dietician and science educator, Holly Baxter, about the most effective ways in which you can get lean, achieve optimal health levels, and remain vibrantly full of energy in a way that is the most beneficial for your body and mind, and why excessive cardio might actually be holding you back. KEY TAKEAWAYS If we engage in cardio too regularly, and carry a calorie deficit, it can negatively impact the energy available for muscle recovery when we need it most. The best way to increase lean body mass and reduce body fat is through incorporating a high protein diet and moderating caloric intake. The latest research into fat loss seems to suggest that there are few advantages in diets that are high in carbohydrates and low in fat vs diets that are high in fat and low in carbohydrates. Everyone is unique and has a bespoke set of requirements. The best coach or mentor will always prescribe an approach based on the individual's needs, and not a one-size-fits-all programme, as these rarely work. BEST MOMENTS 'I definitely had a strong focus on how to optimise my physique for performance' 'It's important to recognise that everybody has a unique preference for different foods' 'What is going to govern the rate of weight loss is the degree of calorie deficit' 'You've got to learn about your client and meet them where they are at' VALUABLE RESOURCES Take My Biohacking Quiz and Get A Free Personalised Report - www.yourtotalhealthcheck.comBecome an Insider of The Female Biohacker Collective and have Angela as Your Health Coach in Your Pocket - www.femalebiohacker.comFree Fasting Guide - www.angelafosterperformance.com/fastingPodcast Shownotes - www.angelafosterperformance.com/podcasts Thanks to our Sponsor: Bon Charge - Get 20% off at www.boncharge.com/Angela ABOUT THE GUEST Holly Baxter is a Dietitian and Science Educator that has been involved in the health and fitness industry for some 13 + years, where much of this time has been dedicated to providing her clients and followers around the world, with evidenced-based education, and to putting up the good fight against the many misconceptions surrounding food, nutrition, and exercise. In 2011, Holly graduated Deakin University as a Food Scientist and Nutritionist and went on to complete her Master of Dietetics in 2013, and now practices as a Clinical Dietitian and Online Science Educator. Holly has, and continues to participate in the sport of bodybuilding as a professional physique athlete, claiming x2 World Championship-level wins in the Natural Fitness Division. It's funny how you remember moments in your life. I was in high school. I was 17 years old. I'm sitting on the couch with my dad. I'm eating a big bowl of ice cream with a lot of chocolate syrup on top and he's eating a salad. My dad says to me, "you know, son, you're burning more calories right now, eating that big tub of ice cream than I am right now, eating this healthy salad. But one day that will change." And boy, was he right. I'm now 59, and I have to watch my weight. I'm the one eating the salads right now. To talk about a healthy lifestyle, Perla Eidson, she's a Clinical Dietitian.

In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with fellow registered dietitian Emilie Burgess. We hear her introduction to sports through tennis and her experience playing on an NCAA Division 1 team. Emilie shares how being an athlete led her to studying nutrition, and why she ended up specializing in disordered eating and female athlete nutrition. We discuss the need for sports dietitians to understand disordered eating and eating disorders given their high prevalence in athletes. Emilie talks about being a part of the pioneering Female Athlete Program at Boston Children's Hospital, and the ongoing research and educational resources they are putting out. Emilie shares her own “all foods fit” nutrition philosophy, based around listening to our bodies rather than the latest TikTok trend or diet fad. I talk about my love-hate relationship with social media and why I put more effort into the podcast than Instagram. We discuss social media frustrations and the importance of knowing which sources of information you can trust, and what you should ignore. Emilie talks about her passion for working with athletes with eating disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We debunk the “not sick enough for treatment” myth, highlighting how your physical appearance does not determine your right to care: psychological pain has no look, and you deserve care and mental freedom. We discuss different work settings for sports dietitians: on the field and with collegiate teams, inpatient treatment centers, hospitals, research environments, 1:1 consultation and private practice. We highlight the role of sports dietitians within high school and college settings, work both Emilie and I love! For young professionals, consuming coffee in the morning and fast food for lunch, and perhaps other unhealthy snacks to prevent drowsiness is a normal daily diet. Not infrequently, lunch was missed because of the limited time squeezed by various meetings. Not to mention that the office environment and exposure to other people cause young professionals to get sick more often, and sometimes hinder recovery. Back with Emilia Achmadi, Clinical Dietitian, Disease Prevention Management, and Sports Nutritionist, in this episode of NalaTalk, we will discuss the importance of vitamins and minerals for young professionals! Hi SSUN listeners! We decided to share this episode again because we thought it especially relevant as the prevalence of eating disorders continues to rise. Anna L. and Elizabeth chat with Kerri Heckert, a certified eating disorder registered dietitian, and Eleanor Benner, a clinical psychologist, about educating and empowering families to help their child recover from an eating disorder. They highlight the importance of modeling food neutrality, normalizing body and weight changes, and that eating disorders affect people of all shapes, sizes, races, ethnicities, genders and religions. We discuss: The multi-faceted causes of eating disorders, which are biological brain-based illnesses Risk factors for developing eating disorders, including genetics and examples of environmental factors How COVID-19 has impacted sleep, eating, and exercise schedules for children and adolescents The developmental period in which children are most vulnerable to the development of eating disorders and what parents/caregivers can do to mitigate that susceptibility Warning signs (behavioral, psychosocial, emotional, and physical) of eating disorders First steps parents/caregivers can take if they begin to suspect that their child has an eating disorder How Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is the gold standard, first line of treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders, in addition to working with a specialized treatment team The benefits of early detection and intervention for recovery prognosis Kerri Heckert, MS, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S, ACSM-CEP is a Clinical Dietitian in the Eating Disorder Assessment and Treatment Program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In this episode, I talk with Rise Up Nutrition teammate and fellow dietitian Mackenzie Bowman. We discuss how she got her start working with eating disorders and sports nutrition after staring off as an engineering major. Both with experience working in the collegiate setting, we talk about the importance of sports dietetics and nutritional resources for student-athletes. Mackenzie shares her passion for building personal relationships with clients, focusing on the psychology behind nutrition and coaching clients to their own unique goals. Mackenzie and I discuss her role working with clients enrolled in our Group Coaching program, and the nutrition transformations she has witnessed during the first 3-month course. Overcoming disordered eating and REDs takes time, but having the support of our dietitians and other female clients sharing in the process can help speed up the journey. Mackenzie's food philosophy centers around fun, fuelling adequately for health and performance, and fitting all foods in. She is passionate about cooking and community, using food to bring people together, alongside intuitive eating and gut health. Her Instagram @followyourgutrd feed is full of recipe inspirations together with gentle nutrition tips. Mackenzie gives us all advice on using social media for good rather than triggering negative mindsets: the instant unfollow button is our friend! For a lot of our clients, the pandemic and the birth of TikTok were the catalysts for disordered eating and overtraining, but for Mackenzie this time sparked her own path to intuitive eating. Mackenzie shares her naive history with nutrition despite growing up as a competitive high school athlete. Food was always fun and intuitive, providing her with the energy needed to fuel her activities. However, studying dietetics in college led to Mackenzie developing an unhealthy relationship with food and body image, hindering her performance as a collegiate volleyball player and affecting her social life. Coming out the other side, Mackenzie uses her personal experience to connect with and guide her clients. Working at Rise Up Nutrition, Mackenzie loves the impact she has on the lives of our clients, and seeing them meet their own goals brings her a lot of joy! Mackenzie Bowman's Official Bio: Mackenzie Bowman is a Registered Dietitian and sports nutritionist and intuitive eater! In addition to Rise Up, Mackenzie currently works at Prosperity Eating Disorder and Wellness, and the last few years was the Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition at Wake Forest University for their collegiate athletes. Prior to Wake Forest she was a Clinical Dietitian which, as we know, is a great foundation of nutrition expertise before going into specialization. Mackenzie is a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician, she has her Master's degree in Applied Nutrition and Physical Activity from Virginia Tech, she has completed Marci Evans eating disorder training and is a Body Project Facilitator helping people improve their body image. In this episode you're just going to learn more about Mackenzie, get to know her and her passion for nutrition – and you'll understand why she is such a great coach for some of the ladies in our programming! Eating healthy doesn't have to be complicated! Experiment with quick methods of cooking like stir frying your protein and veggies together to put together a healthy and delicious meal even if you're strapped for time. Recreate lower calorie versions of your favorite foods! For example, with tacos you can use a smaller tortilla, lean meats, seasonings, and lots of veggies to feel satisfied without feeling restricted. Hi! About Tina ChagouryDietician, health behaviour educator & cancer survivorLicensed Clinical dietician, health behaviour educator and media spokesperson Tina has been practising dietetics in Dubai for more than 17 years.Tina is also an adjunct instructor of Human Nutrition and Food Science at the Abu Dhabi University and currently consults at the Jumeirah al Qasr's DNA clinic as well as NMC's Cooper health Clinic and works closely with renowned paediatricians and functional doctors. When she is not in a white gown, Tina is a regular TV expert guest on MBC1 Sabah El Kheir Ya Arab and previously on MBC 3 Gentle Steps raising awareness and addressing women's health and nutrition in the Arab world for more than 10 years now. In 2019, during her summer holiday, Tina was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and underwent medical treatment that included chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and made it through the other side, in one piece but with some major lessons learnt. About this EpisodeIn this episode, we talk to Tina about her background and her journey as a mother, a licensed clinical dietitian, a media spokesperson, and a breast cancer survivor. She shares some excellent insights and tips on being and staying healthy, how to support those who are fighting cancer and how to help children make healthy food choices. You do not want to miss this episode filled with many valuable and practical tips.Tina's QuotesI fell in love with the major. I was so passionate about what I was doing, the people I met, the professors I met, we're still in touch until now, so yes, it was definitely the right choice for me and this is my story, how I started with nutrition and I don't regret it one bit. What they (cancer survivors) need is to feel whole again and to feel normal again and that means, give them some space. If they want to be alone, let them be alone. If they want to do things on their own, even if you don't think they are able to do it or it will make them tired, let them be.Nutrition is the core of cancer, be it in the prevention, be it in the treatment or be it in the healing afterwards.Don't ignore your deficiencies. Make sure you're always on top of your health, your iron, your Vitamin D, your B vitamin, do your regular checks. So many challenges affect how people eat! Keep supplementing yourself whenever needed. Eat healthy, get away as much as possible with processed foods, from junk; for you, for the kids, for everyone.Start your mammogram earlier than people tell you.You can't imagine the benefits that seeds and nuts add to your diet every day. Flax seeds especially have so many beneficial and healing effects on the body. The treatment is so harsh, that sometimes I would think that the treatment is going to kill me, it's not cancer that will kill me. My advice to anyone going through this (cancer), don't go online, don't research your symptoms, don't research your disease. You will never read what you want and it's not always accurate, it will really spiral you into a dark hole and you will get nothing out of it in the end. registered dietician, nutritionist, and I've been in practice for about 10 years. I'm a clinical dietitian, I talk a lot about healing foods for cancer, anti inflammation, cardiovascular disease, so I definitely have that clinical specialty. But I also believe that food is really fun and part of pleasure of life. And the idea behind champion nutrition is sort of just enjoying food, focusing more on adding in versus subtracting and just having that view of nutrition.Support the show (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl8NPB2H4Mf/?igshid=1m9w8d28oarlu&utm_source=fb_www_attr)

More about our GUEST: Vickie Klimantaris is a Registered Dietitian, Licensed Nutritionist in the state of Florida. She has a Bachelors of Science in Nutrition & Dietetics from Florida INternational University where she graduated top of her class. Since graduating and completing the Didactic internship, Vickie has practiced as an RD in various areas including Oncology, Community outreach, local school districts however her most recent work has been as Clinical Dietitian and Clinical Nutrition Manager for a local Hospital in South Florida. There, her focus has primarily been critical care medicine and post-surgical medicine where she provides nutrition life support for the most vulnerable. She provides nutrition education for patients who undergo major abdominal surgery to help them adjust to their new way of living. Working in the hospital for many years, she's realized that obtaining good health can not be learned in a 15-min diet education which most patients receive while hospitalized; with that being said, Vickie has taken her love for educating and has started her own Virtual Private Practice to provide more in-depth counseling to those who are looking to live a healthier life. After becoming a mother, she quickly learned how challenging it can be to balance newborn life while finding the time to prepare meals. She also wanted us to note that, "Hospital food-service is such a challenge, because you are balancing cost and trying to streamline what you are making to accommodate a very diverse population with not only different issues but also different preferences. And allergies. Hospital food-service gets a bad rap but it’s a very challenging and thankless job. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who you might mistake for Superwoman and if you do, you won't be alone. She is regularly featured on television news segments, inside major blogs and publications, and on podcasts from all over the globe. She's an accomplished Success Coach, Speaker, host of the Maximize Your Strengths podcast, as well as published Author of the hot new book; From Frustrated to Frickin' Awesome: 4 Steps to Achieve the Success You're Wired For. But more than anything else she's an exceedingly proud wife and mother of two, who loves helping others discover how to make their businesses and relationships thrive in harmony. But this was as far from her starting point as you can possibly imagine. Graduating from St Catherine University with a post baccalaureate certificate in Nursing, she entered into the medical profession as a Clinical Dietitian and Registered Nurse before a four year stint as a beauty consultant for Mary Kay So from my viewpoint, she has always had a nurturing side to her character, wanting people to look and feel as good as they can right from the outset. And so you can see that where she is now, is as far away as she could be, but also very similar in concept, she has found a way to maximise her strengths, provide more value to the world and enjoy herself in the process. As she says “While I've always been interested in self-development, in the last 9 years, I dove into investment in my training, self-improvement, and coaching. In addition to classroom style learning, I've gained valuable knowledge from seminars, home-coaching programs, group-coaching programs, one-on-one coaching relationships, books, self-study, and real-life successes and failures. Strengths and playing to them are key to what makes a successful life.
