    D. Arthur: Taking a Significant Break From Work After Loss

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2021 41:48

One summer day in 2018, D. Arthur got an offer to join the recruiting team at a hot start up with some former colleagues from Google. It would be their first big move up in the corporate world after college. Later that same day, though, they got a phone call that no one ever wants to pick up: their mother had Stage 4 lung cancer. This is the story of how D. declined the job offer they'd been waiting for, packed up a full life in Brooklyn, and began what would become a three-year hiatus from full-time work to care for their mom in upstate New York. We get into the realities of pressing “pause” on life as you know it, the creative projects that kept D. afloat during such a difficult time, and the unexpected relationship that changed everything. If you've ever wanted to help your boss be a better manager, this episode is your manual. I sat down with one of the best managers I've ever had to finally get to the core of what it means to "manage up." Amanda Carlton has managed upwards of 40 people throughout her career so far, across multiple industries and role levels. Needless to say, she gets what it means to be a manager. We use examples from our time working together as manager + direct report to show what "managing up" looks like in practice, break down how to start managing your boss if you don't have that kind of relationship yet, and explore whether there's a point when managing up is a lost cause. Plus: What do Amanda's most fulfilled direct reports all have in common? Amanda also shares her own career twists and turns, from starting in Higher Education Student Affairs, getting an MBA and pivoting into tech HR, and how these pivots have shaped her view on people leadership. Consider Amanda your manager-whisperer. This week, I'm responding to a provocative listener question: “I'm someone who is 'anti-career' (I go through seasons of trying different things out to meet my emotional and financial goals at the time) so I didn't think I would find value in your mission. I obviously was wrong, but I wonder if you have anything to say about how to stay motivated in a capitalistic society when all I wanna do is LIVE, not work.” Enter: The Meaningful Work Equation.
