The firm acts as a full stack platform to identify and support entrepreneurs often before they are starting a company. Contrary has raised nearly $100MM across funds. In our discussion Eric and I covered their thesis on talent, how he was able to raise a first fund without the normal background LPs often look for, and how they use culture to attract top talent. First, a word from our sponsor:Allocate is the digital operating system for investors looking to build and manage world-class private portfolios within venture capital and other technology-focused private assets.Despite the enormous growth of the private markets and the rapid increase of retail demand for private alternatives, investing in the highest quality private assets within the innovation sector remains inaccessible and opaque.Go to allocate.co to apply to be an early-access member and join 500+ active Allocate users.About Eric Tarczynski:Eric Tarcynski is the Founder and Managing Partner of Contrary, a venture fund that identifies and invests in the world's top talent. So, we're gonna do a little autopsy now - a little hair follicle autopsy.” (02:45) (Dr. Brian) “The whole concept of porosity has to do with how much moisture your hair can absorb and retain. So if it's low porosity, it means that your hair physically cannot get moisture in it.” (03:08) (Dr. Brian) “You can't necessarily change your porosity. It's usually due to genetics. But, I think it's a good idea to test your hair just to see because there are certain things you can do to manage your hair based on if you have high, medium, or low porosity.” (05:55) (Dr. Brian) “There's certain things you can do, real quick, for low porosity hair. NOTE: In this episode I'm using a Sennheiser e835 microphone into my Portico 2 channel strip and using these plugins in post: KIT BB N105, Shadow Hills Class A Mastering Compressor, Saturn 2, and Aquamarine 4. Here's the summary of what I discuss on How To Handle Loudness Properly in All Stages of Your Podcast Production Workflow: Record all raw tracks at a healthy level (not too low or too hot) Set all raw tracks to the same LUFS before bringing them into your DAW. (I do this at the end of my cleanup phase after I remove background noise, plosives, hums, and other blemishes) Use Compression and/or MaxxVolume/Vocal Rider to compress/tame the loud parts as well as boost the lower volume parts. (NOTE: This step will effectively amplify any background noise, so be sure to absolutely minimize the background noise before pressing record!) Adjust the overall level of each participant so they all sound good compared to each other. (as part of your mixing phase, where you can also use other processing like EQ, saturation, etc.) After rendering the final episode audio, process this file so it adheres to the “unofficial” loudness standards of podcasting: -19 LUFS for mono episodes, or -16 LUFS for stereo episodes. Other Notes: If you ever have questions please reach out! You can sign up to receive Daily Goody's in your email a few times per week or a weekly roundup. Sign up here. I'm not going to lie, things have been pretty rough around here both on a personal and professional level. So today, I thought I'd open up more than I believe I ever have here on The Alden Report. Today I'm talking straight to the mic again about some personal pain that I am experiencing. Some people say that experiencing pain is one of the universal laws of success. That is, most successful people experience pain and pain brings wisdom. If you can make it through and come out of the other side, success will be waiting. Well, I've experienced my share of pain and I've seen how it has led to success. But in down times like these, I often have to question why it is we must go through these negative experiences at all?  I elaborate on these experiences on my latest blog which you can read here. As I say in the blog, I'm not opening up this way so that you can pity me. I understand that being an entrepreneur can bring extremely difficult times. I've built a number of businesses over the last two decades, most of which actually failed. But we are strong. I am strong. Successful entrepreneurs are strong and enduring. I know it will be fine in the end. I know I am on the right path. I know pain is a necessary part of the human experience. But right now, I welcome the other side more than ever.Thank you to this episode's sponsor: Wicked Happy – Apparel To Make You Smile The way we live our lives depends on our outlook. Outsourcing Your Entire Podcast TeamBeing an expert in Podcast Production, Edwin Frondozo knows that he can't do everything alone. In this episode, Edwin shares how he became an expert by outsourcing his entire podcast production team and how he does it. KEY TAKEAWAYSThe first step is to list down all the tasks needed in the podcast production.Second, when you are done with the list of tasks, you can group the required skill-set; for audio, you need an audio engineer, a manager for the whole team, and an SEO expert to optimize your podcast show notes. Remember not just to hire one person to do everything in your production. It's always better to hire someone knowledgeable in specific tasks. The third step is not letting your team do everything without guiding them. You need to share your ideas and experiences with your team, teach them what you know, and vice versa; they will give their take on tasks based on their expertise. Teaching and showing your team how you want the task done by recording yourself and sending it to them also saves you time instead of going on the task every time you delegate.About Edwin FrondozoBefore becoming the co-founder and CEO of Slingshot VoIP, Edwin worked at IBM Canada and Nortel Networks within the sales and marketing organizations. He provided key insights on the business and technical benefits of the respective product lines he represented. Now, Edwin hosts The Business Leadership Podcast & Lives series, where he interviews many influential business leaders in North America about best practices and lessons learned in building a brand, creating high-performance teams, and innovating an entire industry.Learn more about her here:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/edwinfrondozo/ Website: https://www.slingshotvoip.com/ Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/edwin100x Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edwin100x/ Are you in need of any assistance? It's time for us to walk you through our podcast production process. Tune in to get all the insider information from the team behind Law Chat.   Episode Introduction:  In today's episode of Law Chat with Girija, our guests come from within the backend team of this very podcast. Jamie Gadd, the PR Officer at GBP Law, and Tanishka Kherajani, the Podcast Producer come in together to walk you through the entire process of producing a podcast and making it profitable.   Episode Summary:  We go into the details of creating a successful podcast. Right from setting the podcast up, to finding the right guests, pitching to them, conducting a well-researched interview, editing the episode, marketing it as well as monetizing your podcast - this episode is truly a comprehensive guide to podcast production.   Main Takeaways: How to start a podcast: Pick a theme for your podcast. Know what your goal is for your podcast. Have a lineup of guests that you want to interview on your podcast. Prepare a pitch letter that you can personalize and send to guests for inviting them to your podcast. Record at least eight episodes in advance so you can stay on top of your publishing schedule.   How to find podcast guests: Find guests from other podcasts in your niche. Research the potential guest to find out more about their expertise and personalize their invitation. Reach out to your contacts if they are a good fit to be a guest on your podcast. Join online communities for podcasters and find individuals that can be a good fit as a guest on your podcast. Make a list of the different industries from which you want to interview people and research them on social media.   How to pitch to podcast guests: Personalize your pitch and tell them why you want them to be on your podcast. Include your bio, information about your podcast, and your pitch kit. Don't be afraid to reach out to people you feel are too big for your podcast, you never know when they might be in a season of promotion. Include a link to set an interview with you in the original pitch shall the guest decide to move forward.   How to edit and publish your podcast: Don't make the edit sound robotic. Prepare your marketing materials and show notes while you edit the episodes. Sync the volume of the guest(s) and the host(s) so that the episode is equalized. Create a folder for all your promotional assets on a cloud platform where your team can access them. Schedule the episode on your podcast host platform.    How to find sponsorships for your podcast: Reach out directly to brands that will be valuable to your listeners. Incorporate sponsorship opportunities into your guest onboarding form. Use platforms that help you find sponsors. Join Facebook communities for podcasters to discover sponsorship resources.   Podcast Tools We Use at GBP Law:   Yeti Microphone Zoom Google Forms Google Drive iMovie Asana Trello Canva Libsyn   Resources:  Podcorn: https://podcorn.com/ Anchor: https://anchor.fm/ Thematic Music: https://hellothematic.com/   Find Jamie Gadd: Website: https://www.jsisconsulting.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jsisconsulting/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jsisconsulting Book A Call: https://calendly.com/jsis/consultation   Find Tanishka Kherajani: Website: https://www.trendalignmedia.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trendalign/ YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/TanishkaKherajani Skill Over Skin Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/skilloverskin   Get the visual experience, watch the videocast for the episode here: https://youtu.be/GUCRJMF_V4U   Connect With Girija: Website: https://www.gbplaw.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gbplaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GBPLaw/   Help us mentor other entrepreneurs through the power of storytelling by rating us and leaving a positive review on Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/law-chat-with-girija/id1528580730   Get the FREE Five Day Legal Audit: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/5-day-free-legal-audit-challenge/   Join Law Chat for Entrepreneurs Free Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lawchat   Get Ready To Use Contract Templates At: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/

I wrote stories and took them into my teachers like not homework, just stories...I just knew I wanted to write.” (07:20) “A lot of people who started a blog and wanted it to be a business immediately had no business experience. Whereas, I had ten years of leading Fortune 500 companies through projects. So, I immediately was able to respond to businesses like I was a business, and I think that shifted a lot of things.” (11:04) “I think for a lot of people it's a process of ‘go for the goal,' and then have a season where you're just running and enjoying your fitness and then go for a goal. Too often we just go from goal to goal to goal to goal. And that's where I see a lot of the burnout and the frustration.” (18:15) “You don't have to run. There are ways to be healthy, and happy, and fit. But if you want to run, go to a race and look at the people crossing the finish line. They are every size, every age, every gender. If you want to run, this is one hundred percent doable.” (25:01) “Oftentimes, it's coming back to your ‘why.' Pace is not your why. It's not what makes you show up. It's not why you started running. And then, it really is thinking about what actually brings you joy on your runs?” (36:16) Resources MentionedWhitney's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5 (https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5) The Mother Runners Club – https://www.themotherrunners.com/ (https://www.themotherrunners.com/) Amanda's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/amandabrooksmclatchie/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/amandabrooksmclatchie/) Run To The Finish – https://www.runtothefinish.com/ (https://www.runtothefinish.com/) Run To The Finish Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/RunToTheFinish/ (https://www.facebook.com/RunToTheFinish/) Run To The Finish Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/runtothefinish/ (https://www.instagram.com/runtothefinish/) Run To The Finish Pinterest – https://www.pinterest.com/runtothefinish/ (https://www.pinterest.com/runtothefinish/) Run To The Finish Twitter – https://twitter.com/runtothefinish (https://twitter.com/runtothefinish) Run To The Finish YouTube Channel – https://www.youtube.com/runtothefinish (https://www.youtube.com/runtothefinish)

Know Stroke Podcast Episode 31 Interview with Ralph Preston Founder of Stroke Buddies After a stroke, Ralph Preston leveraged over 40 years of professional video experience to continue to do good with his camera. He “turned the lens on himself “ and is developing high-quality videos for stroke survivors and for local non-profits.  About our Guest: Preston is the founder of Stroke Buddies: By and For Stroke Survivors, a Facebook group for stroke survivors that currently has 8,000 members and is growing every day. Ralph built this community from the ground up so survivors can seek answers, learn with educational resources, and receive support. Last year, he launched a weekly virtual stroke survivor support group meeting in association with MedRhythms and is assembling a team of medical professionals, PTs, OTs, physicians, neurologists, and neuroscientists who have suffered stroke themselves and are interested in sharing their stories and knowledge at these support group meetings.  Ralph also started a discussion show that is shared with the Stroke Buddies community and is called Stroke Roadmap. The purpose is to help those who are transitioning their recovery from PT to home therapy. Additionally, Ralph develops and shares dozens of home therapy exercise videos from his YouTube channel to improve at-home recovery.   This year Stroke Buddies was granted non-profit status, so now he is off to raise money and see if he can fundamentally change stroke recovery. But it's really not voltage, perse, it's really energy generation that's related to the cells.”(06:59) (Dr. Brian) “Electrical current and healing goes back to the 1700s. It was found that, if they injured a creature, the electrical stimulation that's generated by the body at that sight of the injury is increased. And it's actually increased in proportion to the amount of injury.”(08:42) (Dr. Brian) “Then Dr. Becker did some measurements with the skin of humans and other animals. He had discovered that there's this electrical field that's roughly parallel to the body's nervous system. And, if there's a problem or disturbance in the field, such as an injury, then it can stimulate the cells to start repairing.”(11:13) (Dr. Brian) “There's a time in London where these two babies had lost their fingers and their fingers regenerated naturally. This goes back to this concept that the younger an organism is, the more healing regeneration that they have. So babies have the ability to have natural regeneration to some degree.”(12:49) (Dr. Brian) Resources MentionedDr. Brian's amazing new book on social media, INFLUENCED, featuring his incredible insights and experiences along with many of your favorite influencers. Know Stroke Podcast Episode 30 Stroke commonly damages motor function in the upper extremity (UE), leading to long-term disability and loss of independence in a majority of individuals. Rehabilitation seeks to restore function by training daily activities, which deliver repeated UE functional motions. The optimal number of functional motions necessary to boost recovery is unknown. This gap stems from the lack of measurement tools to feasibly count functional motions.  Today's guest is Dr. Heidi Schambra from NYU Langone. She and her team at the Mobilis Lab, out of NYU Langone developed the PrimSeq pipeline to enable the accurate and rapid counting of building-block functional motions, called primitives. PrimSeq uses wearable sensors to capture rich motion information from the upper body, and custom-built algorithms to detect and count functional primitives in this motion data. They showed that their deep learning algorithm precisely counts functional primitives performed by stroke patients and outperformed other benchmark algorithms. The study also showed patients tolerated the wearable sensors and that the approach is 366 times faster at counting primitives than humans. PrimSeq provides a precise and practical means of quantifying functional primitives, which promises to advance stroke research and clinical care and to improve the outcomes of individuals with stroke. In our discussion we covered how this tool can translate into rehab happening in the clinical setting, a patient's home, and how insurers think about reimbursing stroke rehab.  About our guest: Dr. Heidi Schambra is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine, Director of the Division of Neuro-Epidemiology, Director of Research Strategy in Neurology, and Director of the Mobilis Lab. Dr. Schambra received her BS in neuroscience from Brown University and MD from Emory University. She completed her training in neurology at Harvard-Partners and in neurorehabilitation at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in motor learning and noninvasive brain stimulation with Dr. Leonardo Cohen at NINDS/NIH. Dr. Schambra was on faculty at Columbia University until 2016, when she joined NYU Langone. When not in the lab, she can be found taxonomizing clouds, cute-aggressing her pets and husband, and menacing New York on a Citibike. Tweetable Quotes“I'm laughing because I love to mispronounce this word. I always grew up mispronouncing it and I still do kind of on purpose because it's the way I used to pronounce it. ‘Quinoa,' but I like to call it ‘KEN-O-WAH'.”(02:28) (Dr. Brian) “So one of the main issues why high sugar - unintended, so to speak - is that it causes something called AGES, or Advanced Glycation End Products. Now, these are fairly toxic. They're caused by reactions between sugar and other types of proteins in your body and they are really high on the suspect list for causing some of these problems.”(04:48) (Dr. Brian) “I do want to make one comment about cancer. A lot of people aren't aware of this. Cancer is also regulated by the immune system.”(06:09) (Dr. Brian) “Just to recap about the rice. If you cool the rice overnight and heat it up the next day and you're concerned about your blood sugar, then that does help blunt the spike in your blood sugar.”(08:15) (Dr. Brian) Resources MentionedDr. Brian's amazing new book on social media, INFLUENCED, featuring his incredible insights and experiences along with many of your favorite influencers. Forgiveness is a process that takes time, patience and emotional balance. Today we explore the boundaries around forgiveness and how to deal with them. The first step in this process is to understand where you are emotionally. You need to be able to identify what feelings you are experiencing, what thoughts you are having, and how these emotions make you feel. For example, if your mother died from cancer but it was not your fault, then there may be some guilt or shame around your loss because it was not your fault. If you can't forgive yourself for something that's not your fault then try using radical responsibility as a way of dealing with this guilt or shame. Radical responsibility means acknowledging that we have no control over everything that happens in life and that we need to be compassionate with ourselves and our need to be perfect. It's about accepting the responsibility for our choices and actions, taking care of ourselves, and letting go of the need to control or change everything. It is important to note that forgiveness is not forgetting what happened, but choosing not to allow the event to dictate how we live our lives and how we feel about ourselves. In episode 12 of season 2 we explore and unpack the concept of forgiveness as a process. We discuss what it really means to forgive and why it can be so difficult. As always, you'll hear some of our own stories of loss and forgiveness, as well as ideas for understanding and practicing forgiveness in your everyday life. Resources: Adams, B. (1993).
