Reformed podcast dealing with various theological topics. Sit back, grab a drink, or the steering wheel, or just turn up the volume while you're doing your thing wherever you are and let's see what we can learn about the one true God.
In this episode we look at the proper way to read the Bible. Hermeneutics is the study of biblical interpretation, and surely that is a necessary part of properly reading the Bible, but there is also a heart attitude. The acronym for this talk is WELCOME. Worship, Listen, Context, Meditate, Explain.
In this episode we take an introductory look at how a person who does not know Biblical languages is able to benefit from many the tools which are available.
It's not as boring as it sounds. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most useful (and fun!) Methods of interpreting old testament poetry.
In this episode we look at what is called the grammatico-historical method of interpretation. It is something you will run across when reading certain Christian literature. This episode will give you a very brief description of what it is, so that you can better understand what those authors are talking about. Our acronym is TGC. Time (language changes over time), Grammatically rules apply, and Cultural Context.
GeTMA: Genre, Type of Speech, Meaning, Application. The Bible is to be interpreted "literally" (according to the letters), in other words, it is to be interpreted as literature. Poetry as poetry, history as history, etc. Then we must recognize hyperbole, parable, etc. Finally we look at the difference between Meaning and Interpretation.
"The Infallible Rule of Biblical Interpretation" Sometimes called the "Analogy of Faith". God is His own interpreter. Scripture interprets scripture. VITA. Verbal Inspiration, Truth, All-knowing (Omniscient author).
The Bible is God's Revelation, therefore it is Understandable. We have to Love it to understand it. We need to Explain it to others (or Evangelize or Encourage).
this episode I give three reasons why proper biblical interpretation is so important. Remember AAP. Authorship, Authority, Power. Because God is the author of scripture, it has authority and power in the life of the believer.
A talk on how we should approach this cultural moment known as "Christmas".
In this episode we look at what it means to speak the truth.
How do we know true truth? This episode we define truth as "that which corresponds to reality." How do we recognize reality? We explore this question in this episode. We all recognize reality by faith.
In this episode we begin looking at the concept of "truth". In this introductory message, I talk about the need to speak the truth and the need to know when to hold your tongue.
In this episode we look at the relationship between love and obedience as well as the role of trust in our work with God.
In this episode we explore Jesus' concept of not just deciding who our neighbors are but rather how can we be a neighbor to others
In this episode we look at the difference between ethics and morality as well as their connection. Of course we look at this with an emphasis on Christian ethics which is based on Christian morality.
In this episode we look at the doctrine of original sin. Original sin being sent inherited from Adam, and actual sin being those sins which flow from that inherited sinful nature. What do we do about it? That's the gospel.
This episode talks about Christian ethical behavior and how the difference between law and grace affects this. Also, if we are under grace, why follow the law?
This podcast is the fist of a series Christian ethics. We begin with what is known as. "The Golden Rule": "do unto to others what you would have them do unto to you." We are not saved by the law, but we are given the Spirit of Christ when we are saved. We are told to follow in his steps. Today's message will focus on Matthew 7:12..
In this episode we look at limited atonement. A better name for this doctrine would be particular redemption. This doctrine addresses the idea, "for whom did Christ die?", for "the elect" only of for everyone who ever lives?
In this episode we look at the necessity of the atonement. The atonement the only method available to God to secure our redemption? Could we be saved without an atonement?
This week we begin looking at the doctrine of the Atonement. This episode is an introduction to that study.
In this episode we look at, as the title proclaims, the 70th week of Daniel in the Battle of Armageddon. This is the final installment of our eschatological meanderings. The 70th week of Daniel is a prophetic vision of the coming of Christ. Why would it not be? The Battle of Armageddon, since it is well known in popular theological parlance, we will also see in this context.
We continue our discussion on the various views on the Millennium.
In this episode we continue our discussion of eschatology (study of the end times), with an introduction to the Millennium.
Is the title explains, we continue our discussion of dispensationalism focusing on the Rapture and comparing dispensationalism to covenant theology.
Further inquiry into the rapture has led us smack into dispensationalism (oh my!). Join in as we explore this fascinating and divisive topic.
Part 1 of a look at the doctrine popularly known as the Rapture. Is it biblical? Does anyone care? Is it just assumed that is biblical and read into the text? Is it just assumed that it's biblical and we leave it at that?
Many people are asking, "Is this the end of the world?" Let's explore that question biblically.
In this episode I discuss who the Beast of Revelation is and what the mark of the beast is. I'm doing exegetical reading from Vern Poythress' commentary on the book of the Revelation, "The Returning King ".
In this episode we address the use of Psalm 91 by many Christians who are saying that the proper interpretation and application of the psalm will protect believers from getting sick.
Continued look at Puritan writer, Thomas Watson's book, "The Doctrine of Repentance". We examine 6 different ways to look at (think about) sin, to see the "sinfulness of sin". 1) Every sin is a recession from God (a pulling away from). 2) Sin is a walking contrary to God. 3) Sin is an injury to God. 4) Sin is profound ignorance. 5) Sin is a piece of desperateness. 6) Sin besmears with filth.
As we preach a Gospel of love and hope, we need to also be aware that there is wrath being stored up for the non-believer. So how are we to give an answer for the hope that's within us while also lovingly explaining the necessity of repentance. In this episode we continue our examination of the Puritan writer, Thomas Watson's, The Doctrine of Repentance. The following impediments are addressed: 1) Men do not apprehend that they need repentance. 2) People conceive it is an easy thing to repent. 3) Presuming thoughts of God's mercy. 4) A supine sluggish temper. (Laziness) 5) The tickling pleasure of sin. 6) An opinion that repentance will take away our joy. 7) Another obstacle to repentance is despondency of mind. (depression) 8) Hope of impunity. (God's patience toward sin is sin as His permanent disposition.) 9) Fear of reproach. (from friends) 10) An immoderate love of the world.
A little longer today. I am addressing the current cultural moment of awaiting for Hurricane Corona. How we are to demonstrate the Peace of God from the Prince of Peace. 1. God is in control. (The Providence of God) 2. Speaking Peace 3. Functional Gods
The weakness of the American church is manifold: 1) uncoverted pastors leading unconverted people 2) the biblical illiteracy of Christians 3) the idolatry of children (loving and worshiping our children more than we love Christ). 4) the worship of material things and as always seeing "prosperity" as blessing 5) the worship of health and comfort 6) fear of death 7) lukewarmness to the things of God 8) belief in our own abilities to deal with life's problems 9) desire to be liked by people (fear of man) 10) faithfulness to a church based on anything other than its faithfulness to the Gospel (and a willingness to abandon a church based on anything other than its unfaithfulness to the Word of God or geographical relocation) 11) a denial of the authority of all of Scripture 12) a desire not to offend or to appear judgmental 13) a belief that all churches are good churches 14) "racial" barriers (we are all to be one in Christ, the world is currently promoting the idea that only those in power can be "racist". This is a demonic lie. 15) pastors who will not call out sin among their own congregations especially when those in sin wield official or unofficial power (1Peter 5) 16) pastors who are afraid to present biblical truth for fear that their congregations "are not ready for it" (Eph 4:11-16) 17) people who have been ordained as pastors who are biblically disqualified (1Timothy 3; Titus 1). Since the world does not want to follow these biblical commandments, it calls the writings of Paul unauthoritative (especially in respect to the ordination of women, which is forbidden in Scripture, and because of which many call Paul misogynistic, to their shame.) 18) Pastors who fear losing their income if they offend too many in their church 19) Christians who trust in government (chariots and horses) 20) Christians whose fear of man rather than the fearing of God fail to speak out on culturally immoral issues (the top of this list being abortion, and the LGBTQ+ issue) 21) LACK OF PRAYER 22) LACK OF PRAYER 23) LACK OF PRAYER (since this is so important it needs to be reiterated) 24) self-righteousness 25) lack of daily repentance The list is very long, I'm sure. I am not unaware that my own sin and short-comings could fill a book (to my shame) and that I am unaware of many of them. (Psalm 139) And yet I have hope! For I have seen the goodness of God in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13). I am still amazed by the powerful Christians I come across. I am humbled by their faith as evidenced in their words and works (James 2:14-26). Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few (1Sam 14:6). Repent. Read and memorize Scripture. Search your heart to see if you truly love the Lord. Preach the Gospel to yourself every day. Find your spiritual gift(s) by serving others in and through the Church. Start speaking the truth in love at all times. Seek to serve and to save others. Think of others as more important than yourself. Our lives are but a vapor. James 4:14-17 "yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin." This is a little long because I wanted to get this out now. (and at this my eyes begin to water tears of sorrow and grief) because I know that in a few days (or even hours) "the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things will enter in and choke the word" (Mark 4:19). My desire is to feel and to think and to speak like this all of the time. Pray for that kind of boldness and love for me and I will pray for it for you. Give no place to the Devil (Eph 4:27)
