Get transported back in time to discover the untold stories and roots of a railroad town called Clinton, in South Carolina...as told by our guest in this episode, Albert "Vision" Williams. A passionate historian, ancestry hobbyist, and amazing artist, Albert brought Clinton to life in our imaginations, revealing the untold stories of its history through the lens of his family's legacy. A legacy that we share to an extent because he also happens to be a cousin that I discovered via ancestry.com. Through heart-warming memories of his childhood, poignantly painful stories of loss, and spine-tingling stories of new ancestral discoveries, Albert in his deeply informed and passionate style painted a beautiful tapestry of the stories of the African-American community whose roots can be traced all the way back to the start of the slave trade route in West Africa. Please be warned that some of the stories shared in this episode may be quite triggering for some listeners. From one decision made by a visionary grandfather - decades ahead of his time - generations of families and students are being nurtured. Our guest in this episode, Dr. Carlene Fider, comes from that very lineage of passionate educators and visionaries who, in one way or another, have always seen it as their life's calling to give back to the communities that nurtured them by offering safe refuge to those most in need of belonging. And with her passion for supporting socially disenfranchised & marginalized communities, Dr. Carlene is clearly continuing in these very noble footsteps. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have existed since before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but for many years, only a select few have been widely known. And to Nicole Ford-Miller, our guest in this episode, that was an unfortunate oversight that had to be corrected. Being an Altadena - California native, it was quite a shock when one of her friends discovered that Nicole had never stepped foot onto the University of Southern California campus. And no wonder. Nicole's passion for HBCUs was kindled by her family since childhood, both through her parents and her aunt. So there was never a question as to what kind of university she would attend. After her incredibly welcoming and amazing experience at an HBCU (Bethune-Cookman University), Nicole started an organization, Stepping in the Right Direction (STRD), to spread the word about these little-known options for the African-American community. Tune in to find out more about Nicole's outstanding work in creating awareness about these universities. For Dr. Issac Hatley, seeing his vivacious, strong, and fiercely independent wife so weakened by chemo that she needed help for even the most basic self-care was utterly heart-breaking. But this brave and admirably loyal husband's attitude and approach to her suffering is a beacon of light and a beautiful example of what it looks like to truly love someone. In this follow-up episode to Kiana Hatley's last week, I had the privilege of interviewing her husband Issac, along with a brief interview of their 14-year-old daughter Reagan Hatley. Issac and Reaghan shared their insights into what it felt like to be a carer for someone you love, and also divulged some precious gems for anyone going through what they did as a family. Their perspectives of breast cancer's far-reaching effects will both warm your heart and reduce you to tears...in a good way! You'll definitely walk away with so much more hope in humanity. To a lot of people, breast cancer awareness month brings images of pink-clad ladies and children participating in marathons, with huge smiles on their faces. To our guest in this episode, breast cancer awareness month took on a whole new, not-so-glamorous meaning. "...you know, when you see breast cancer stuff, you see like October the month of pink and it's so girly and it's beautiful and it's such a positive thing, but breast cancer is ugly and it's harsh and it's brutal and it is painful. It robs people of their family members and it robs people of themselves." ~Kiana A mom, wife, and licensed marriage family therapist, Kiana shared her deeply moving story about her struggle with cancer not just once but two times. First with low-grade Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in her 20's, and then 10 years later with aggressive Triple Negative Breast Cancer, a direct result of her radiation therapy treatment for lymphoma 10 years prior. A strong, plain-spoken survivor with a big heart for people, Kiana had a lot of wisdom to share from her experience. From trusting your own instincts about your body to knowing how to be persistent in getting the help and treatment you need, you will walk away with a lot of food for thought...and encouragement. Tune in to get a candid but compassionate view of the reality of fighting breast cancer through the eyes of someone who has walked the journey. !Warning: This episode contains discussions of suicide and abuse! The blows we're dealt in life have the capacity to make us or break us, and what we do with those agonizingly painful situations is what sets us apart. For Latisha Russell, pain and trauma have been a common thread since before the age of 6. Having been separated from her estranged biological dad at a very early age, her mom's new marriage landed them all in an even worse situation - with a verbally and physically abusive husband/stepdad - and he went as far as to sexually abuse Latisha for years. In a pivotal moment of despair, instead of letting the pain of these horrendous traumatic childhood experiences snuff her life out, Latisha chose to use her experience to help others. Tune in to listen to her as she composedly recounts her harrowing experience, and how she is helping other families going through the same navigate these very sensitive situations.
