Cherokee chef Nico Albert Williams is just trying to make some corn soup. She's the executive director of the Burning Cedar Sovereign Wellness in Tulsa (grand opening Sept. 14) and the vocalist for a badass doom/sludge metal band, Medicine Horse (debut album drop Sept. 8). In this music-filled episode, Nico and I talk about storytelling in music, religious horror and how she pivoted from the restaurant chef life to community leader.

In today's episode we talk about Sochan with Nico Albert Willaims of Burning Cedar Sovereign Wellness. Sochan is a member of the Asteraceae family (Daisy family) and is an important plant in Cherokee cuisine. In addition to being a great perennial vegetable for humans to eat, thisplant offers leaves for the caterpillars of several moths and butterflies, flowers for many pollinators and seeds for migrating and overwintering birds. They are also tough enough to be planted in spots where invasive plants have recently been removed. You can purchase Sochan plants from Aaron's nursery Here, with a portion of sales going to support Burning Cedar. You can follow Nico's work at BurningCedar.org or on Facebook / Instagram. You can support her work by donating to Burning Cedar! In the interview we mention the study Testing the Nutrient Composition of Perennial Vegetables in Denmark, Sweden, and the United States (PDF) Nico mentions the Eastern Cherokee returning to harvesting Sochan in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, which you can read about Here

Uncovered Legacy

Get transported back in time to discover the untold stories and roots of a railroad town called Clinton, in South Carolina...as told by our guest in this episode, Albert "Vision" Williams. A passionate historian, ancestry hobbyist, and amazing artist, Albert brought Clinton to life in our imaginations, revealing the untold stories of its history through the lens of his family's legacy. A legacy that we share to an extent because he also happens to be a cousin that I discovered via ancestry.com. Through heart-warming memories of his childhood, poignantly painful stories of loss, and spine-tingling stories of new ancestral discoveries, Albert in his deeply informed and passionate style painted a beautiful tapestry of the stories of the African-American community whose roots can be traced all the way back to the start of the slave trade route in West Africa. Please be warned that some of the stories shared in this episode may be quite triggering for some listeners. A church minister, newspaper editor, NAACP leader, community activist, and family man, the Rev. John Albert Williams (1866-1933) was a singular leader in a simpler time who faced complex problems and made North Omaha a better place. He was widely recognized in North Omaha, in the Episcopal Church and among his family; however, today his name is nearly lost to Omaha history. Adam is making sure his name is not lost. If you desire more freedom and the ability to call your own shots, stay employed! There is a fallacy that being an entrepreneur will provide that. It may, but only if you are willing to work 24/7 for an undetermined period of time to achieve the freedom you are looking for. Owning a business isn’t for the faint of heart. Entrepreneurship means business baby! It requires agility when there is a disruption and a response is necessary. You can’t wait for others to tell you what to do. You must create the vision and go for it. Stop letting naysayers plant fear and stop your dreams. Surround yourself with like-minded people who support your success. Albert also hosts the Plan Build Become podcast, interviewing inspiring thought leaders to further help his own minority communities. ----- A native of Jamaica, Albert Williams arrived in the Bronx with his mother and two siblings when he was 8 years old. He exemplifies how the ripple effect of entrepreneurship can take hold in someone at a young age, manifest itself, and now give back through mastermind coaching and mentorship to minorities with business ambitions. He started by bagging groceries in the express line while still in elementary school, held many jobs since then, owned a barbershop and laundromat, and acquired Best Deal Private Care Service Inc. in June 2012. Best Deal specializes in nonemergency medical transportation, but more importantly, it is a community car service that takes pride in knowing customers by their names and their needs. As CEO, Albert Williams gives his Bronx-based livery company strategic direction while assuring that its operations remain high-quality and focused on the needs of its loyal customers. In this episode, Albert Williams explains that he coaches other minorities who aspire to be entrepreneurs by reminding them that there is no magical pill. Mastermind groups allow us to bring out those qualities we may not see in ourselves. Albert Williams explains the importance of listening, being humble, and investing in your own personal development. Even in a company where all of his drivers are independent contractors, he reminds them that they have to be the right fit since he is the face of the company and that elderly woman they are picking up for an appointment may be somebody’s mother. And she most certainly matters. When thinking about his business, he always wants to know how his drivers, his vision, and the strategic plan he has put into place will move the needle forward. We welcome actor, director, audiobook narrator, and author Kevin Theis back to Booth One to talk about his new book, Invading Nirvana, A Chicagoan in the City of Angels. This hilarious and informative book serves as a blueprint for any actor considering moving to L.A. to try to get work in show business. It's available at bookstores or on Amazon. Kevin has also narrated the audiobook. Longtime Chicago critic and theatre professor Albert Williams has this to say about it: "A smart, witty, but also incisive and candid chronicle of Theis's experiences and observations as a Chicago actor who decided to head west to crash the TV, film, and surprisingly lucrative audiobooks markets." In this book, Kevin explores every aspect of the entertainment industry, including stand-up comedy. Treating the project like a journalism assignment about what it's like to live there, he also talks about other L.A. weirdness, such as the pervasiveness of Scientologists and cannabis. Check out this site to see the big blue Scientology Center and one of the videos Kevin saw in person. Kevin has a book signing on October 20 at City Lit Books and on October 24 at the Den Theatre. Gary and Kevin have just seen The Rembrandt at Steppenwolf, starring John Mahoney and Francis Guinan. They, along with their 3 supporting actors, are sensational. As Kevin says, go to this show to see "two pros get up on stage with the right material and the right director and just knock it out of the park!" In his "Good Times & Bum Times" segment, Gary recounts two amazing tales of woe and good fortune. The bum times is particularly astonishing. Gary has recently done an audio book narration workshop with Kevin, which was a lot of fun. Kevin will come to your home to do the workshop! Go to this site if you'd like to sign up. Our producer gave Gary a shark picture book as a "present." It includes graphic photos and "danger ratings", along with proof that at least one 5 star danger-rated shark can live in fresh water. Good to have your phobias validated. Kevin announces a new project he is doing at Oak Park Festival Theatre. A world premiere play called "A Dickens Carol" by Ned Crowley. The premise is that A Christmas Carol is based on actual events from Dickens' life. Opens November 26. Speaking of A Christmas Carol, this will be the  40th anniversary of Chicago's Goodman Theatre production. Kevin enjoyed being part of that cast for seven years. Kiss of Death: Celebrate the life of magician Eugene Burger. What a story. A master of close-up illusions and mentor to many at the The Magic Castle. Gary has been lucky enough to get invited in the past and recalls it as one of the great experiences of his life.

What's the difference between an end and a beginning, and are they sometimes the same thing? My guest this week is Albert Williams, a longtime queer artist and activist who's seen the queer world transform over the course of his life. Throughout that time, there were periods when change just wasn't coming fast enough, and that's when he and his friends found ways to force one era to end and a new one to begin.
