Veterinarians are nearly three times more likely than the general public to die by suicide, and one in six has contemplated taking their life, according to recent studies. The industry has never been under more stress: During the pandemic, pet ownership in the United States rose by 70% and the demand for veterinary assistance has risen exponentially. But many veterinarians are leaving the profession because of intense workloads, crushing student debt, hostile pet owners, and the trauma of euthanizing animals they've cared for from cradle to grave. We'll talk about the mental health challenges veterinarians and vet techs are facing, and what can be done. This segment originally aired on March 8, 2022. Guests: Dr. Susan Cohen, social worker, Dr. Cohen runs support groups for veterinarians and animal welfare workers; former director of counseling, the Animal Medical Center in New York City Dr. Melanie Goble, founding board member, Not One More Vet -- a nonprofit organization devoted to helping the veterinarian medical community with mental health issue; practicing veterinarian Jennifer Scarlett, president, San Francisco SPCA; veterinarian Dr. Cherese Sullivan, president, Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association; practices general veterinary medicine

Welcome back to How She Built It Podcast! Today, I have my friend Katie Merkes sharing her business story with GoodLife Integrative Veterinary Care. Katie's story of following her dreams and handling new roles as a wife and mother with it, is inspirational and motivating. I'm so excited to be able to share her with you! See below for a few of my big takeaways from our chat, and listen to the full episode for all of Katie's wisdom. Key Takeaways Katie knew from a very young age she wanted to be a veterinarian. She attended Iowa State University for her undergraduate with a Major in Animal Science and Minor in Spanish. She continued on at Iowa State in Veterinarian Medicine and graduated in 2013. After graduation, Katie moved to California for a year to do an internship in the horse world. After a year of equine knowledge, she moved back to Dubuque to begin her business. Katie's business journey began when she was able to buy a former mobile veterinarian's practice in the area. Although she was hoping to specialize in equine, she saw the demand for small animal services. Her business now focuses on both equine and small animal care. She credits her husband for his support of the long-term goal of her business. Challenges with being a business owner: Katie had to go through a huge identify shift when she became a mother. Her priorities and mindset had changed. She could no longer work the crazy hours and had to put her family first. Setting boundaries and communicating the new boundaries was difficult. “You just have to go for it.” 2020 was a year of growth for Katie's business. After reevaluating the logistics and serving clients further away, she has made the shift to a brick and mortar. “It feels so good to delegate jobs to other people and I have found a great team. They love when I give them responsibilities and they do a kickass job at it.” Katie shares the importance of having a team and giving up some control. What advice would Katie give to future business owners? Find something you are truly passionate about and keep going! Since that time they have invested in more than $100 million dollars toward 2,400+ studies addressing the emerging and established health challenges of a variety of species. Dr. Kelly Diehl gives us some examples of a few of these studies so we can get a scope of the research they fund. We would love it if you could listen in!
