Claire Chick had done everything right. She ended the relationship. She filed police reports. She told friends she was scared.Just days before her death, she even warned that she believed her estranged husband might kill her.On the night of January 22, 2025, in a quiet neighborhood in Plymouth, her worst fears came true. As she stepped out to meet someone new, the man she'd been trying to escape was waiting in the dark. What followed was a brutal attack in full view of the street—and a series of questions that still haunt the people who loved her. How many warnings does it take to be believed? In September 2023, 45-year-old Eleanore "Ellie" Halverson and her mother, Roxanne, drove to a mental health facility in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was planning to check in for treatment. Outside the entrance, Ellie said goodbye to her mother and daughter, as neither of them were allowed to accompany her inside.Roxanne expected she would hear from her daughter within a few days, once Ellie had settled in and was granted phone privileges. But as time passed with no word, a sense of unease set in. Then she learned that Ellie had never officially checked into the facility, and no one had seen or heard from her. Fearing the worst, Roxanne reported Ellie missing in Grand Rapids. Then, on November 4, Ellie was spotted on surveillance footage in Northhome, MN. Ellie's family believed she was likely with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Geno. Police eventually tracked Geno down in rural Itasca County. He told investigators they had argued one night in early November, and Ellie had stormed off into the freezing Minnesota darkness. That was the last time he claimed to have seen or heard from her. This November will mark two years since Ellie vanished. Her family is still searching, haunted by unanswered questions and desperate for the truth about what really happened that night. If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Eleanor “Ellie” Halverson, please contact the Itasca County Sheriff's Office at 218-326-3477. In this episode of Dating Detectives, Mackenzie and Hanna are joined by Mackenzie's long-time friend and fellow private investigator, Brandy, for a jaw-dropping undercover story. What begins as a routine insurance surveillance case quickly unravels into something far messier, as Brandy tails a seemingly average family man who, while his wife is out of town, juggles not one, not two, but three different women, sometimes even on the same day.Click here to join our Patreon! Danger doesn't always announce itself with bruises or broken bones. Sometimes it lurks beneath the surface, wrapped in excuses, disguised as sleep, masquerading as concern. During this powerful episode, we uncover the reality of psychological abuse that happens within the supposed safety of intimate partnerships. We explore three particularly devastating forms: abuse disguised as sleep disorders, where partners deliberately cause harm and then claim they were dreaming; delusional jealousy (clinically known as Othello's syndrome), where irrational accusations of infidelity become tools for control; and identity invalidation, a systematic erasure of a person's history, accomplishments, and sense of self. These patterns often go unrecognized because they don't fit conventional understandings of domestic violence. A husband who presses on his wife's eyeballs in the night and claims he was fighting monsters in his dreams isn't just having a parasomnia episode—he's creating a perfect cover for deliberate harm. A partner who becomes fixated on implausible affairs with pastors or distant acquaintances isn't merely insecure—they're establishing grounds for surveillance and isolation. And when someone rewrites your childhood memories or diminishes your professional identity because you've paused your career to raise children, they're not being critical—they're systematically dismantling your sense of self.We also address the complex question of why women stay, especially in situations where material comfort masks emotional devastation. "Leaving isn't always safe, and sometimes the prison has chandeliers." The contrast between a mansion and a shelter, between marble floors and survival mode, creates painful dilemmas that outsiders rarely understand. If you recognize these patterns in your relationship or in someone you love, please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. Remember: you are not crazy, you are not alone, and your life—your real, beautiful, whole life—is not up for debate. Stay safe, stay sane, and stay supported.Support the show

In this episode, we talk about how vulnerable it can feel to name a need, the weight of perceived pushback, and how quickly it can spiral. We dig into what we call the nag paradox—that toxic loop of asking, resisting, escalating, and shutting down—and how it traps so many of us in a cycle of sacrifice, resentment, and disconnection.Mentioned:Wages For Housework by Emily Callaci Get resources, ad-free episodes, and more at timetoleanpod.substack.comPreorder No More Mediocre: A Call To Reimagine Our Relationships And Demand MoreFollow Laura: @thatdarnchat | thatdarnchat.substack.comFollow Crystal: @itscrystalbritt | itscrystalbritt.substack.comSubscribe, rate, and share to help others find the showIf you or someone you know needs support: The National Domestic Violence Hotline | 800-799-7233 Hosted on Acast. A listener sent us a video that hit a nerve: a husband asks his overwhelmed wife how he can help, then resists the very thing she asks for. In this episode, we unpack what's really going on in moments like these. In this powerful and eye-opening episode of Please Me, we're diving into the uncomfortable but critical topic of how abuse often hides behind the mask of love, jealousy, and control. Host Eve sits down with Shawn Schutt and Amanda Courier, co-hosts of the Touchy Subjects podcast, to unpack the hidden layers of domestic violence and sexual assault—and how abusers manipulate relationships long before physical violence ever occurs. Shawn and Amanda specialize in breaking the silence around topics most people avoid—and today, they're exposing the subtle yet dangerous tactics abusers use to gain power and control, from isolation and jealousy to phone surveillance and emotional manipulation. In this episode, we discuss: The true definitions of domestic violence and sexual assault How jealousy is often the first red flag—and why society normalizes it The role of identity and how marginalized communities face unique risks Abuse tactics like isolation, phone control, and manipulation disguised as "love" Why leaving an abusive relationship is far more complex—and dangerous—than it seems Steps to safely leave an abusive situation and how to seek support Whether you're navigating a relationship, supporting a friend, or just want to be more informed—this is an essential conversation everyone should hear. Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions about domestic violence, sexual assault, and manipulation, which may be distressing for some listeners. Throughout, we explore the ethical responsibilities of true-crime storytelling, the perfect-victim myth, the chilling power of “dogfish” deception, and why trusting your “femmetuition” can be the difference between life and death.Click here to join our Patreon! Jessie was 21. Molly was 11. Two days after their joint birthdays, their mom, Jill, was murdered by Molly's father. In the hours, days, and years that followed, there was little room for grief. Jessie and Molly were expected to keep going — and they did. But that forward momentum came at a cost. It's been nearly 20 years, and only recently have Jessie and Molly begun to revisit what happened and what it's meant to live with unspoken grief and unacknowledged trauma. As part of that process, they discovered a manila envelope packed away in storage - inside were eight children's book manuscripts written by their mom in the 1980s. Finding those stories sparked a new chapter of connection with their mom and motivated them to work towards getting them illustrated and published. Note: This conversation includes descriptions of domestic violence, stalking, violent death, and suicide. If you or someone you know needs support, see the list of resources below. In this conversation, Jessie and Molly talk about: What their mom was like and what she meant to each of them Their vastly different experiences of the day she was killed What stood in the way of them naming what they lived through as abuse and trauma How grief became something they held privately, even from each other The impact of finally receiving permission to feel and grieve Their efforts to get their mom's children's stories published Follow along and support their project: Barty Books on Instagram GoFundMe: Everyone Has A Story To Tell. Send us a textIn this deeply personal episode, I share the story I've never told — a summer day in 1995 that changed the course of my life forever. What started as a long, lonely walk through the rain became a turning point in my survival journey. From childhood trauma and emotional abuse to the moment I finally pushed back and reclaimed my voice, this episode explores what it means to choose yourself — even when everything around you tells you you're nothing. We'll also explore how the Full Moon in Sagittarius and Saturn's shift from Pisces to Aries mirror this exact energy — the call to break free from old narratives, rebuild identity from the inside out, and walk a new path where no one else gets to decide who you are. This is an episode about rage, reclamation, and rebirth. It's astrology rooted in real life — and a reminder that your chart holds more than predictions. It holds your power.

This week Mackenzie and Hanna invite the first PI guest on the show to share one of their own stories! The first PI guest is Austin, a nine-year veteran whose toolkit spans family-law digs, criminal-defense surveillance, insurance-fraud exposés and cutting-edge open-source sleuthing. He pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to trail a suspect—long hours in a lobby, split-second decisions on whether to dash inside or stay hidden, and even the pros and cons of facial-recognition software like PIMeyes. You'll get Austin's top safety hacks for vetting dates (free and low-cost background-check resources you can use tonight) and discover why a seemingly innocent Memorial Day beach trip ended with an all-too-public, trunk-wide rendezvous in a cherry-red Porsche.Click here to join our Patreon! This week on The Dating Detectives, we meet Sandra, an accomplished counselor whose relationship began with friendship, trust, and late-night heart-to-hearts during the pandemic. But what started as a slow-burn romance with a charming EMT quickly spiraled into a web of lies, emotional manipulation, financial devastation, and ultimately, physical violence. In Part 2 of this two-part series, Sandra bravely walks us through the gradual erosion of reality that left her questioning everything, including her own sanity. It's a textbook case of how abusers groom, isolate, and control, layer by layer, and a powerful reminder that trusting your instincts isn't just important, it can be life-saving.⚠️ Content Warning: This episode includes descriptions of emotional, financial, and physical abuseClick here to join our Patreon! **If you or someone you know is experiencing stalking or domestic violence, there is help. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or visit www.thehotline.org.** Peggy Klinke was a vibrant young woman whose life would be derailed by a relationship with a man named Patrick Kennedy. What began as just a short romance became a years-long campaign of stalking, threats, vandalism, arson, and psychological terror—all of which Peggy documented in painstaking detail. Despite her repeated cries for help, the justice system would fail her again and again: law enforcement would ignore her, and Patrick's obsession would eventually escalate into violence. Jacque Waller was a 39-year-old, mother of triplets, who tragically disappeared on June 1, 2011, in Jackson, Missouri. She had been in the process of divorcing her estranged husband, Clay Waller, when she vanished after meeting him to finalize paperwork. Her abandoned Honda Pilot was found along Interstate 55, but Jacque was missing. Investigators suspected Clay from the beginning, but it took months before they could charge him. In April 2012, he was officially charged with first-degree murder, and later, as part of a plea deal, he led authorities to Jacque's remains and admitted to killing her. Jacque's case has been featured in multiple true-crime documentaries, highlighting the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help.
