Discovery Park CEO Discusses Memphis - Jeremy C. Park interviews R. Scott Williams, author of "Town Mania: Marcus Winchester and the Making of Memphis," and President and CEO of Discovery Park of America. Scott discusses his background as a Memphian and his role at Discovery Park of America, which inspires visitors through exhibits on history, science, and technology. He mentions the park's upcoming focus on America 250 and Tennessee's celebration in 2026, which ties into the themes of his book.Marcus Winchester's Early Life and Legacy - Scott discusses his research and writing process for his book about Marcus Winchester, a key figure in the early development of Memphis. He explains how Winchester's connection with David Crockett, whom he funded in congressional campaigns after a financial setback, piqued his interest. The book begins with Winchester as a 17-year-old prisoner of war, detailing his early life and the challenges he faced. Scott highlights Winchester's role in establishing Memphis and his journey from a prisoner of war to a prominent figure in the city's development.Interracial Marriage and Social Struggles - Scott and Jeremy discuss the complexities of Marcus Winchester's life, focusing on his marriage to a woman of mixed racial heritage and the challenges they faced due to societal racism. Winchester, despite his contributions to building the city, was forced to move outside the city limits after laws prohibiting interracial marriage became stricter. The couple had eight biracial children, and their relationship was later portrayed negatively, with evidence of their marriage being erased or misconstrued over time.Marcus Winchester's Legacy in Memphis - Scott discusses his ancestors' lives in Haywood County and the impact of slavery on their community. He emphasizes the importance of understanding how slavery affected individuals like Marcus Winchester, highlighting the legal restrictions on freeing slaves and the dangers faced by free African Americans. Scott also describes Marcus as a visionary in logistics, business, and commerce, particularly in the development of Memphis. He notes Marcus's contributions to transportation, entertainment, hotels, and tourism, as well as his role as the first mayor and the founder of the city's first charged ferry service.Marcus Winchester Historical Research Challenges - Scott discusses the challenges of researching and writing about Marcus Winchester, noting the difficulty of piecing together an accurate story from limited historical records and making necessary assumptions. He highlights Winchester's community-focused actions, such as requesting vaccines during an outbreak and seeking permission to use wood during a harsh winter, to illustrate Winchester's character. Scott emphasizes the importance of including relevant historical context to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of early Memphis and its settlers.Preserving Memphis's Historical Legacy - Scott discusses his hopes for readers of his book about Memphis, emphasizing a deeper appreciation for the city's history and the importance of preserving historical sites. He highlights the story of the Winchester Cemetery, which was neglected and desecrated, to illustrate why historical preservation matters. Scott expresses hope that readers would understand the significance of preserving Memphis's historical buildings and the contributions of previous historians and researchers.Marcus Winchester's Historical Legacy - Scott discusses the historical significance of Marcus Winchester and the role of transportation in shaping Memphis. He highlights the upcoming anniversary events in 2026, including the bicentennial of Memphis's incorporation and the 230th anniversary of Marcus Winchester's birth, which he hopes will spark public interest in history.Visit https://rscottwilliams.info/ to learn more about Scott Williams and visit https://discoveryparkofamerica.com to learn more about Discovery Park of America.

Since the launch of the Memphis Safe Task Force, the TBI has confirmed 44 missing children recovered to safety, most being runaways. The director of the TBI said they've been focusing on the missing children, identifying 137 when the task force started. Doesn't that alone justify the entire operation? If it saves ONE life, right? Right? Also on the show: Chicagoans have expressed jealousy after seeing videos of Memphians thanking Trump for making Memphis safe again, Ketanji Brown Jackson suggests black Americans can't vote and compared them to disabled people, and The Zohran takes on Fox News! With the Memphis Safe Task Force in place, Memphis is now a city with zero tolerance and some people forgot what that means. Memphians, trained by weak and overly tolerant city council members & leaders, got used to living by the simple rule of "that's not legal, but it's ok" . Pushing for resolutions eliminating "pretextual stops" for operating a vehicle with safety deficiencies like no tail lights, expired or fake drive out tags, the city council created a lawless culture in Memphis. Speeding and reckless driving, smoking weed while driving and other crimes were handled with "look the other way" policies because of a soft on crime DA, city council and leadership. It's taken federal agencies to step in and correct this mess. The old city motto - "That's not legal, but it's ok" has been thrown out because THP does not answer to Memphis City Council and other leadership. And thank God!Support the show: https://www.newstalk989.com/personalities/memphis-morning-news/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Daily Memphian columnist Day Conaway wrote a column that strongly suggested Memphians should take up arms against President Trump. The column was so volatile that the donor-funded newspaper removed it leading to cries of censorship. Under pressure from their small readership, the newspaper relented and posted Conaway’s screed. Also on the show, more news has come out over the weekend about Tyler Robinson, the alleged Charlie Kirk assassin, and we share everything that's been released so far. We also listen in on Justin J. Gunfire erupts on Beale Street at South Main as 901 Day revelers ran for cover. There were more than a half dozen large fights on Beale throughout the day. Mayor Paul Young went out of his way to tell Memphians that our city was safe and the real problem was the crime coverage by news organizations like KWAM. Yesterday, the mayor’s rhetoric puts lives in danger. Our city is not safe and our mayor is a fool for saying otherwise. Agree or disagree?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Memphis Grizzlies---Chris Herrington from the Daily Memphian with Geoff Calkins on Hardiman Lease Negotiation on FedExForum
Earlier this year, I received the mind-bendingly generous offer of a couple of weeks “at sea” this summer to really drill down on writing my dissertation. It was the first time I was able to set aside every other beautiful burden in my life and focus my whole attention on turning tens of thousands of words on the Christian imagination into a single thesis. My soundtrack for those sabbatical weeks was the only Jeff Buckley album, entitled, appropriately, Grace. Memphians are usually vaguely aware of Buckley, primarily because of his tragic death by drowning where the Wolf River meets the Mississippi. These are the two rivers we are told not to swim, often with Buckley's name added to the haunting testimonials. I myself was taught to fear the big waters by the invocation of his name. Jeff Buckley's shocking death in 1997 was one of many stories of young, talented, beautiful people whose early promise was cut short. Critics and listeners had praised him as “the next truly great artist,” citing his soulful tone, soaring range, and out-of-the-box sensibilities. And then he was no more. I've thought about Jeff Buckley a lot this week, for a few reasons. As I transition back into life at St. Patrick, I still have the taste of that fruitful couple of weeks scored by his album. I will forever be transported back to St. George Island whenever I hear him. Also, this past week a new documentary on his life opened in theaters and I've been foaming at the mouth to go see it. There's something about his album and story that touches “life eternal” for me. It's somehow both a product of its time and also an echo of past and future. Most meaningfully, I've been immersed in Psalm 105's brief coverage of Joseph this week in preparation for this Sunday's sermon. From Israel's perspective in Genesis, (at least for several decades), Joseph's was another story like Jeff's. A beloved young man, full of vision and promise and vitality, stolen from this world too soon. We could easily learn defensiveness and cynicism from such apparently senseless losses: “how to shoot someone who outdrew you.” The world doesn't fight fair, so why should we? Yet a wider perspective shows us that “it's never (really) over.” In fact, if we can see the whole picture, we might just take a posture in the mean-times that looks more like worship, even if “it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.” Can't wait to be with you all!
