Learn more about this offering at shawnparell.com/iceland.A young monk arrives at an old monastery. Among his daily tasks, he is assigned to replicate sacred church canons by hand. He soon observes that each replica is copied from a preceding replica and asks the abbot: “Father, is this not problematic? One mistake could perpetuate through every subsequent copy.” The abbot shrugs and responds, “We have been copying from copies for centuries.” But, wanting to encourage the young monk's earnestness, he submits to check the original manuscripts for discrepancies. So, the abbot disappears down a dark staircase to a vault in a cave beneath the monastery. Hours pass and he does not reappear. By now concerned, the young monk descends the staircase and discovers the abbot on the floor, ancient scrolls scattered about, wild-eyed and muttering to himself."Father, are you alright?" the novice pleads. The abbot manages to stutter a single word in response. The young monk slowly, questioningly, sounds it back: “cel-e-brate?” “Yes, yes – that's it! We had it all wrong, my boy. The word was ‘CELEBRATE!'”~I love this old dharma joke. Its cheekiness is underpinned by valuable teachings like how a beginner's mind can grant a fresh perspective and how ritual can devolve into absurdity if its original energy is forgotten. It also makes light of a disposition that seems exclusive to our species – namely, to be unnecessarily hard on ourselves. The sacred revelation of this story is to celebrate. My mother invoked the aphorism nothing's ever easy as counsel throughout my growing years. During apartment moves and breakups, at 2 a.m., when I called, bleary-eyed, from a campus library and, repeatedly, through the season of a nervous breakdown (mine, not hers). Among a class of women pioneers in the legal field and a single mom, she worked staggeringly long hours, sacrificed amply, and rarely complained. More than advice, nothing's ever easy was an anthem and an affirmation: like The Little Engine That Could, it was her way of chugging I think I can, I think I can up the mountain. My mother was then the age I am now, and I understand how her perseverance was born of a necessary resolve. If she could reframe hardship as reliable rather than unexpected, she could calmly measure the weight of any presenting challenge and steady her course onward and upward. She could overcome. And so, she did.But every belief has its implications. If we take ourselves too seriously and are convinced that our growth depends on our gravity (the word “serious” comes from the Latin root “serious,” which means "weighty, important, or grave"), we risk veering with programmatic precision toward celibate and not leaving room for celebrate. Here's how it happens.Negativity bias refers to our neurobiological stickiness around negative events or emotions. We weigh perceived threats more heavily than positive or benign factors – it's a matter of primal electrical activity, information processing, and evolutionary advantage. One constructive comment could be cozied into an outpouring of approval and admiration, for example, and we assume that the constructive comment is the only honest one. We are preferentially sensitized to the pea beneath the mattress.Modern media algorithmically harnesses and exploits this psychological predilection for negative news to keep our attention. Fear is a hungry beast. Consistent exposure to toxicity and traumatic imagery has become the norm, even for those of us who are media literate and intend to set healthy boundaries for our nervous systems. What's more, when negativity bias combines with availability bias, the tendency to perseverate and overestimate the importance of the examples that immediately come to mind when considering a topic, and confirmation bias, the tendency to seek out, remember, and favor information that supports something we already believe, diffuse impressions can concretize into core narratives. Now for an insightful bit of research. Because negative news carries disproportionate psychological weight, balance does not equate to a 50-50 equilibrium. Researchers charted the amount of time couples spent fighting versus nurturing and determined that a ratio of five to one between positive and negative interactions is needed to sustain a stable, satisfying relationship over time. If we apply these findings to our relationship with ourselves, it follows that our physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being is predicated on the multifold cultivation of signals of self-regard over those of scrutiny and punishment. The first noble truth is that suffering, or dukkha in Pali, is unavoidable. Rupture is bound to happen. Challenges happen; life happens. Nothing's ever easy. Whether or not we reconcile ourselves to our situation, we are of the nature to grow old, to become ill, to die, and to experience loss. “Be joyful though you have considered all the facts,” wrote Wendell Berry. Our actions and attitudes are our only true belongings, the only ground upon which we stand. What is the difference between your existence and that of a Saint? The Saint knows that the spiritual path is a sublime chess game with God. And that the beloved has just made such a fantastic move and that the Saint is now continually tripping over joy and bursting out in laughter and saying, 'I surrender.' Whereas, my dear, I'm afraid you still think you have a thousand serious moves. - HafizJoy is about surrendering to the rapture and grace of life. A fresh cell spontaneously begins to pulse within its round, fluid body, sparking neighboring cells, and so on, until a wave of light radiates across a forming heart. This, I believe, is an utterance of joy.Joy also widens the heart's aperture to delight in facets of our interconnectedness. Sympathetic joy, or mudita in Pali, is the practice of finding pleasure in the intrinsic happiness, health, and good fortune of others. Mudita promises to untie our thoughts from unhelpful comparison and gladden our relational field.Even allowing the heart to experience sorrow can be a tenderizing portal into joy. According to resilience and bereavement expert George Bonnano, allowing the full spectrum of emotions to emerge is essential to a healthy grief process. His research with psychology professor Dacher Keltner demonstrated that the more widows and widowers laugh and smile during the early months after their spouse's death, the better their mental health outcomes over the first two years of bereavement. We can despair over the thousand serious moves we thought we had – or we can recognize that sifting for joy is part of our resilience training. "They've taken so much from me. They've taken our ability to worship in the way we might. They've taken parts of our culture. They burn texts. They've destroyed so much. Why should I let them take my happiness?" wrote the Dalai Lama.My friend Mark Jensen recalls hearing Father Thomas Barry counsel that we should wake up every morning and beg forgiveness because we are human and because of how much we have destroyed and are destroying; and then, we should stand up, look around, and celebrate beauty so that our celebration is greater than our despair. Because, as we awaken, we may find ourselves like the old monk — bewildered and delighted at how mistaken we were, struggling to appear good rather than inclining ourselves toward the essence of goodness. And, meanwhile, yellow-bodied roses will be opening across the garden. Get full access to The Guest House at shawnparell.substack.com/subscribe

The Little Engine That Could was just plain lucky. If you remember that children's book, when the little engine had to take over for the bigger engines to pull the train loaded with toys over the mountain, he kept telling himself, “I think I can,” even though it seemed clear he was much too small to succeed. While the “I think I can” strategy worked for the little engine, in the real world that mindset is responsible for more failure, frustration and disappointment than we are led to believe. Thinking positively is not what is necessary for a positive result. It's not a bad thing, but it's not the only thing, and if it's not grounded in reality it can be damaging. You don't achieve confidence by trying to build confidence itself. True confidence is a natural result of properly directed actions along with a positive mindset. Without the actions and the experience that comes with following through on those actions, a confident attitude will let you down nearly every time. You need the proper ingredients to build confidence. Confidence is the cake that comes out of the oven, but it isn't what goes into the oven. What goes into the oven doesn't look like cake at all, but if you've followed the recipe, the batter miraculously becomes a cake. That's the kind of confidence you can count on and it's much more powerful than just a “can do” attitude. Think back to the last time you started a new piece feeling confident that you could meet the challenges it would present. Of course, you knew there would be difficulties in the piece that you would need to work on and conquer, but you were secure in your belief that you would be able to finish the piece and play it with assurance. That's the kind of confidence that comes from positive past experiences, the habit of success. A habit of success allows you to meet challenges and obstacles with the inner certainty that you already have the skills and strategies you need in order to overcome them. Your certainty is built on your track record of growth and achievement; you know you will be able to succeed because you have proof. Obviously the trick is creating those positive experiences that create that inner feeling of confidence. That's part of what we will talk about today. We'll also talk about what sabotages our confidence and how to break a cycle of disappointment, if you ever find yourself losing your confidence. Plus, I'll share the most important habits I believe you need to make sure that your confidence is baked into all your playing. By the way, confidence isn't just for performing. We play with more flow, more musicality, and fewer mistakes when we play with conviction and confidence. So whether you want to perform for others or just enjoy your playing at home - my hope is that you'll do both! - you'll find today's ideas invaluable. Just like the Little Engine That Could, you'll soon be saying, “I knew I could!” Links to things I think you might be interested in that were mentioned in the podcast episode: Our 2024 Harp Happiness Challenge in the Harp Mastery® Hub is starting its second week. My guest in this episode is Paul Webb who comes to the show via an introduction from a previous guest Nick Sheppard (Ep.53) – Many thanks Nick. Paul is a self-confessed ‘Music Talks Junkie' and I love the fact that he listens to the episodes on his journey to and from Fly Fishing. Originally from the UK he's lived in the U.S for over 30 years and now has the joy of living in Bend, Oregon which I am very jealous of having had a couple of delightful holidays there and at one point we seriously considered retiring there. Music is a clear passion for Paul, both listening but also playing guitar. He describes himself disparagingly as ‘a hack' but I hardly think that's fair particularly given he's a left hander who plays right-handed. His musical passion is complemented by several others including:· Family – his wife Talley and their two children Ellis & Dylan.· Climbing – Paul shares several fun, inspirational stories about climbing as well as one about climbing the Royal Arches in Yosemite and almost not making it down. · Cycling – with three friends he did The Race Across America, which is 3200 miles in 7 days. This was the inspiration for one of his song choices and the title of the episode. He also shares openly and movingly about the challenges his son Ellis faced with addiction and how he came very close to death. I'm delighted to say that Ellis is now well into his recovery and in Paul's own words is thriving. Paul finishes his song selections with a performance of an original song by himself and his younger child Dylan. There's a great story behind it and the performance is just exquisite. Paul's song selections are: 60's - Moon River Audrey Hepburn70's - Carillon Sky80's - Love Is A Stranger Eurythmics90's - Signe Eric Clapton00's - Fix You Coldplay10's - Catch & Release (Deepend Remix) Matt Summers20's - Made It Out of Clay Dylan Webb If you would like to be on the show then please contact me at musictalkspod@outlook.com Please follow and like Music Talks on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/musictalkspod . I'll bet you remember these familiar words, "I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. I think I can." Sure you do. Well, I hope you do, or else you had a deprived childhood. Because most of us grew up on those words. It's that little book, The Little Engine That Could. I think Fred Flintstone must have read it to his kids. I mean it's that old. Remember, the little engine tries to make it up to the top of the mountain, with this train load of toys. It's a mountain no other train was able to navigate. And as he gets near the top, he says, "I think I can. I think I can (puff, puff, chug, chug)." Oh, I've read it so many times to my kids and my grandkids. Well, as you remember, of course, he makes it to the top of the mountain. It's a great book. It's got a great philosophy of life. It's a great confidence builder. But maybe right now you've hit a mountain that you really can't climb. Maybe you need to read that book again - or I've got an idea. How about a much better book. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Brink of 'I Think I Can't.'" Now, about that mountain that you're having a hard time getting to the top of. And I'll tell you, I know what it is to chug up mine and not be making it. Maybe you're there. There's just too much right now. Maybe it's one of those Morton salt times - they're the ones who have the commercial "when it rains it pours." It's gotten worse before it got better. It could be you're just too tired, you're too depleted. Maybe you have in front of you a responsibility or even a ministry that looks... well, just too big for you. And you are living on the brink of "I think I can't." Well, if it's any comfort to you, someone as strong as the great Apostle Paul was there. He recorded it in 2 Corinthians 1:8. He talks about pressure in his life. He says, "We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life." Paul literally, he's on the brink of "I think I can't." He talks about the responsibilities of his ministry. In chapter 2, verse 16, he says, "Who is equal to such a task?" He's just barely hanging on... maybe just like you. And then all of a sudden in chapter 3, verse 4, he talks about "such confidence is ours through Christ before God." Wait a minute! Where did this confidence come from? I thought you couldn't make it up the mountain, Paul. Well, our secret is our word for today from the Word of God from 2 Corinthians 3:5. He says this, "Our competence comes from God. Not that we are confident in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, He has made us competent." Now, there's a re-appearing Greek word here that means "adequate," "qualified for," "worthy," "large enough." It's the word that John the Baptist used when he said, "I'm not worthy... " I don't deserve to untie Jesus' sandals. Paul said, "I don't deserve to be an apostle," but now he's confident. Well, if you feel you're not adequate, you're right. If you feel like you don't deserve the position you have, right again. If you feel like you can't handle what you've got, you're right. God lets us get to those overload points so He can show us what we can't do and what He can do. The simple fact is whatever the gap between your strength and your challenge, God makes up the difference. He has made us competent. So, my friend, draw deeply on His strength. Be honest about how desperate you are. And then proceed as if God will get you to the top of the mountain. Because He will, if you are at the brink of "I think I can't." Because then, you're at the brink of God's miraculous enabling.

The classic story of "The Little Engine That Could" by Watty Piper has been inspiring optimism and hard work for almost 100 years with the iconic phrase "I think I can!"What mountain(s) are you facing today? Developing the tenacity, perseverance and "Can Do" mindset the little blue engine had takes more than just repeating three words over and over again and it IS possible for each of us.1. Boost self-efficacy. First you must believe in yourself.Recall times in the past when you "knew you could"; when you were successful and ponder on the skills, thoughts, habits etc you needed to obtain that goal.Search for stories of others who have overcome impossible odds. 2. Be aware of your powerful thoughts and cut the ties to the ones that are causing you to sink.3. Watch sabotaging language.Replace "have to" with "get to".Replace "should" with "will".Eliminate "try" and replace with "do".4. Know your motivation. There are three that will set you up to fail and three that will set you up to strive for success.Set to FAIL:DisinterestedExternal.Imposed.Set to Succeed:InherentAlignedIntegrated5. Mindset is yours to control.Choose to wake up every morning repeating “I think I can.” Instead of I can not I can not. Always be mindful of your thoughts and words…and your actions will automatically start to change. You are the one willing to change and as you change, the world changes because of you.You deserve to reach the mountain top.You deserve success. And not just you. Hiya Friend! In today's episode, I'm literally going to read you a classic story you might remember from your childhood: The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper. Now I know you might be asking yourself, "Why in the world are you reading us a story for children on a sobriety podcast Jess?" Don't fret, there's a purpose! Okay... so you remember the story, yes? It was that fun, sweet tale where a train carrying toys and treats for good boys and girls breaks down. Three train engines decide to not help, each for their own reasons. Finally, a little blue engine comes along and helps. Well, friends, I re-read this story as an adult the other day and HOLY TOLEDO. The amazing themes and symbolism that you can pull from this story are worth talking about. So if it's alright with you, I'm going to read you the story on this episode! That way you can not only hear it, but you'll have the opportunity to also see how much of it can resemble our sober journeys. I hope you enjoy it!One last thing... Friend, do you feel like you've kicked the booze but are still experiencing that dreaded urge to pour a drink during that witching hour? Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom offers his thoughts on the FTX situation, explaining why he believes crypto is a fad and not the future of currency. Then, Giordano takes a call from a caller who he allegedly helped a couple years ago, who thanks Giordano for helping him completely turn his life around. After that, Dom reignites an idea from yesterday's show, telling that after sleeping on it, he would like to move forward with offering a ‘Conservative Radio Host Story Hour' at a local library, asking listeners what books he should read, landing on ‘The Little Engine That Could.' Then, Dom welcomes J.D. Mullane, Columnist for the Bucks County Courier back onto the Dom Giordano Program, after Mullane penned a column exposing a situation in which a local business faced some governmental heat for showing a conservative film. Mullane takes us inside the shocking story, telling of a threat levied by Newtown commissioners against the Green Parrot for hosting a conservative group, solely because they were going to show a film that had a wide theater release. He's also narrated hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of audiobooks, so he's really good at doing lots of different voices and accents. To show me how he does it, Ray did a cool dragon voice, and then I did a giant's voice—and then we talked about how it's really fun to imagine how other people (or monsters!) might sound, but that you can never really tell just by looking at them. Even if someone seems scary, they could actually be a really kind person (or monster)! Something Ray and I have in common is that we both love stories! Something we don't have in common is that I like to listen to them, and he likes to read them out loud and perform them—and that's a really fun difference to have! Ray gets to record books, and I get to go and listen to them whenever I want. How cool is that?We talked about cardboard creations, and how penguins don't like cheese, and how he likes to ask new people to tell him whatever they know the most about! I think that's a great way to make friends, because someone might be an expert in something really surprising, and you'll learn a lot about it—and them!I learned a lot of things about Ray, especially that he's super fun to talk to, and a really nice person. I think you'll think he's fun and nice, too!Well, it was great talking to you again! I'll be back after the holidays with some more cool people to introduce you to, and in the meantime, I hope you'll be able to practice meeting some new people, too. If you're uncertain how to start the conversation, you could do what Ray does and ask them about the thing they know the most about, or you can just try asking them, “How were you kind today?” Have a great week, and if we don't talk before then, have a terrific Cardboard Boxing Day, too!Vac
The kindness and determination of the Little Blue Engine have inspired millions of children around the world since the story was first published in 1930. Cherished by readers for ninety years, The Little Engine That Could is a classic tale of a little engine that, despite her size, triumphantly pulls a train full of wonderful things to the children waiting on the other side of a mountain. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/avant-garde-books/support

Have you every wondered why some people try harder than others? There was a study to see if preschoolers had internal vs external control of behavior. Meaning they believed they were in control of their behavior or an outside source was. They were asked questions like:“When you draw a whole picture without breaking your crayon, is that because you were careful? Or because it was a good crayon?”“When somebody brings you a present, is that because you are a good girl (boy)? Or because they like to give people presents? They found even preschooler's belief that they could control outcomes of their own behavior significantly linked to how hard they tried, how long they persisted and how successful they were at self-control. The more they saw themselves as the cause of positive outcomes, the more likely they were to delay gratification as shown through the Marshmallow test.Listen to how you speak. Notice when you and your kids say "I can't." Change "I can't" into "I don't know how to...yet!"If you you think you can't then you can't. If you think you can you can be just like The Little Engine That Could. If you don't know how to do something...yet, you can figure it out.If you believe you CAN...then you can! You will continue to try and figure sh*t out when you believe you can accomplish it.www.allyoumama.comIG -@MeghanQBarrett

One of the first books I can remember reading with my Mom was the classic: "The Little Engine That Could." Do you remember it? No other train was willing to take on the task. The little blue train was. It was difficult, but he repeated to himself in the rhythm of the track: "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I think I can." And he did. This is one of the earliest memories I have of a story of human empowerment. And there are so many of them! So many sports movies of teams winning when they shouldn't have, stories of people achieving their dreams while overcoming impossible odds, people even overcoming their bodies to do what they have to do. There are so many of these stories, because we need them. So many people just quit. We come to a life situation and we say: "I don't think I can." And we do this because what's packed in our invisible suitcase is the idea, “I have no power.” Paul crushes that thought in us with what he writes in Philippians 4. It's a verse you have maybe heard before: "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength."But Jesus isn't to be treated like pixie dust to sprinkle over your life so that all your dreams will come true. that's not what Paul was teaching. In fact, he calls what he knows a "secret." Here's what Paul is teaching. Christians aren't little super heroes that leap from power to power and from joy to joy. We're people who sometimes see astounding success and sometimes see soul numbing trouble. We're people who sometimes find bright solutions and other times stare at a problem only to find more problems. But that doesn't mean we need to carry around an invisible suitcase with the idea inside, “I'm powerless.” Because we're not. And that's not because we've got all the answers or have peppered enough Jesus onto every situation, but because come what may we've still got our glory, our peace, our everything, our Jesus. Or to say it like a man named Paul who lived a whole lot of this life said it: I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
