In this episode of CASAT Conversations, we are honored to welcome Dr. Steven C. Hayes, a pioneering clinical psychologist and the originator of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). With decades of groundbreaking work that has transformed the field of psychotherapy, Dr. Hayes brings a deep understanding of how we build resilience, move through suffering, and live with purpose.Drawing from tribal traditions, spiritual wisdom, and cutting-edge behavioral science, Dr. Hayes shares how ACT helps people willingly take on their own history, turn toward their pain, and connect with what matters most. He reflects on pivotal moments in his career—including his TEDx Talk, Turning Pain into Purpose—and emphasizes the importance of developing mental flexibility in a post-COVID world where "5 out of 5 of us" need resilience.Dr. Hayes also critiques the systemic challenges facing the mental health field today, including the limitations of the DSM, the influence of pharmaceutical companies, and the reduction of individuals to data points in normative science. With humility and fierce compassion, he calls for a culture shift in psychotherapy—one where practitioners are empowered to trust their intuition, meet clients with curiosity, and reject categorical thinking in favor of wholeness and integration. In this episode, Dr. Hayes discusses:The role of acceptance in healing and transformationACT's connection to tribal traditions and human resilienceHow personal pain can become a path to purposeHis critique of the current mental health system and the DSMThe power of integrating all parts of ourselvesA vision for bottom-up change in psychotherapy through practitioner wisdomJoin us for a compelling and candid conversation about how we can reimagine mental health care—from the inside out—and reconnect with the core of what makes us human.Key words: acceptance and commitment therapy, ACT therapy, resilience, mental health, healing, wisdomResources: TEDTalk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o79_gmO5ppgInstitute for Better health: https://www.ibh.com/Books by Steven C. In this powerful and deeply personal episode, Ed Ricci shares his transformative journey from inconsistent fitness habits to becoming a dedicated endurance athlete with a renewed sense of purpose. After a rough first marathon experience and the toll of the COVID years, Ed found motivation through family, loss, and charity to return to running with greater discipline. His story includes training for the New York Marathon in honor of his father, who suffered from Parkinson's, and raising $17,000 for the Parkinson's Foundation. He speaks candidly about the mental and physical demands of endurance training and the profound personal growth that followed. Ed recounts the emotional and physical challenges of completing the 4x4x48 challenge, running four miles every four hours for 48 hours straight—all while juggling family life and sleep deprivation. He discusses how experiences of grief and loss, including the deaths of his sister and uncle, shaped his commitment to fitness and living a meaningful life. Now in his mid-40s, Ed is chasing a sub-3:15 marathon goal and reflects on the measurable benefits of consistent training—not just on his body, but in his work, family, and mental clarity. This episode is a testament to the power of purpose-driven fitness and the resilience of the human spirit. Takeaways: Tying physical challenges to a cause—such as raising money for Parkinson's research—can provide deeper motivation and emotional resilience, especially when facing grueling endurance events.Partnering with someone for regular training can help maintain consistency, push through mental barriers, and create a sense of shared purpose and camaraderie.Events like the 4x4x48 demand more than physical endurance; success hinges on managing sleep deprivation, family responsibilities, and nutrition throughout the experience.Regular early-morning exercise can dramatically improve mental sharpness, emotional regulation, and productivity across both professional and personal life.Training smart involves knowing when to adjust expectations, especially when recovering from injuries or balancing other life stressors.Goals should be ambitious yet realistic, tailored to current fitness levels and structured in a way that fosters growth rather than burnout or discouragement. Physical and mental transformation doesn't happen overnight. Progress requires patience, tracking measurable improvements, and embracing a mindset of continuous adaptation and self-honesty.

We all have demons. Some we fought on the battlefield, others we fight in our own minds. For Army veteran Juan Espinoza, the weight of his experiences nearly crushed him-until he found a way to process the pain. After years of bottling up emotions and trying to "just push through," Juan hit a breaking point. One cold December night, he stepped into the rain, dropped to his knees, and screamed for purpose. What followed was an outpouring of emotion that turned into a book-written in just two days-that changed his life forever. In this episode, Juan shares how writing became his therapy, how shifting your perspective can change your life, and why true strength comes from vulnerability, not suppression. Whether you're a veteran dealing with the unseen scars of service, struggling with relationships, or searching for purpose after the uniform comes off, this conversation will hit home. And if you think you're not the "writing type," Juan's story might just change your mind.Timestamps: 02:45 - Juan's Army career and combat deployments 10:45 - Writing as a form of healing and self-reflection 22:30 - The power of perspective in overcoming pain 35:45 - Strength in vulnerability and breaking toxic cycles 50:15 - How veterans can start their healing journeyLinks & ResourcesVeteran Suicide & Crisis Line: Dial 988, then press 1 Website: https://juanespinoza.meTranscriptView the transcript for this episode.
Behind every successful business owner is a story you don't always see, the tough seasons, the unexpected turns, the quiet moments where they feel like giving up but decide to keep going anyway. It's making big decisions when you're not sure how things will turn out. It's sticking with it, even when life doesn't go to plan. These are the parts of business people don't often talk about but they matter the most.Building a business isn't just about strategy, skill or systems. It's about stamina. The ability to show up on hard days. The willingness to lead even when no one's watching. And the courage and inner strength it takes to stay in it for the long game, especially when life throws curveballs you never saw coming. And my guest in this episode, Joanna Boyd, is a powerful example of exactly that.Joanna who is a Brisbane based buyer's agent with over 27 years in the real estate industry. She's also a business owner, mother, and one of the most grounded, heart led leaders I've had the pleasure of meeting. Joanna shares how she built her business from the ground up after the sudden loss of her husband, the systems and strategies that keep her client experience seamless, and what true leadership looks like when life is anything but smooth.“ Grief and loss and challenges can be presented in so many different ways, but you've almost got to sit in it and swim with it and actually really get those feelings to be able to come out the other side. It's not my nature to not keep moving. There's so many little bits of wisdom that I've learned along the way” - Joanna BoydWe explore:Joanna's 27 year journey through the real estate industry The sudden loss of her husband during a family holiday and how it shaped her pathHow Joanna found the strength to rebuild her life, raise her children, and grow a successful businessThe loneliness of business ownership and how to build your own support toolbox for your journeyWhy systems, client education, and proactive communication matter more than ever in real estate and property managementWhy she believes systems and processes are key to delivering a high end client experience and the ones she swears by and has implementedHow to build strong customer relationships that lead to repeat and referral businessSimple ways to make your business more efficient with email templates, Loom videos, and process roadmapsTips for balancing work and life as a solo parent and business ownerHow grief can fuel purpose and why it's okay to ask for helpThe value of surrounding yourself with like minded people and why Netflix sometimes counts as personal development Kylie's Resources:Property Management Growth School: https://courses.thatpropertymum.com.au/TPM-BDMSchool Digital Marketing School: https://courses.thatpropertymum.com.au/digitalschool That Property Mum Courses: https://www.thatpropertymum.com.au/courses/ The PM Accelerate Membership: https://courses.thatpropertymum.com.au/accelerate Book a Strategy Call with Kylie:...

Send us a textJessica Ramos is a 31-year-old registered nurse and passionate advocate for domestic violence awareness, drawing from her personal journey of survival and healing. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, Jessica's life has been shaped by her strong foundation in faith and education, which she received through attending Catholic school from preschool through college. As a teenager, she built some of her best memories at Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra and her first job at Marie Callender's in Monterey Park, where she later returned during the holidays, embracing the joy of reconnecting with her roots.Growing up in a home with divorced parents, Jessica and her sister experienced financial struggles, but both parents shared a mutual belief in providing a strong education and a safe environment. Jessica's focus on academics led her to complete a Bachelor's in Nursing and establish a solid career, but it wasn't until later that she realized her academic success had been driven by a deeper need for love and affection, stemming from unresolved childhood wounds. At 25, Jessica purchased her first home, only to find herself in an emotionally abusive relationship that would alter the course of her life. What began as a seemingly innocent relationship quickly turned toxic, leading to a cycle of emotional, verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. While she was excelling in her career as a nurse during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jessica faced a very different kind of nightmare at home—one marked by manipulation, gaslighting, and coercion. The relationship slowly stripped her of her voice, dignity, and sense of self. After enduring years of trauma, Jessica finally found the strength to escape. She sold her home, took a leave of absence from work, and began the long process of rebuilding her life from the wreckage of an abusive relationship. Although her case against her abuser was dismissed in court, Jessica's journey to healing had only just begun. With the support of loved ones, therapy, and access to resources like EMDR, somatic exercises, and organizations such as Peace Over Violence and East LA Women's Center, Jessica has taken back control of her life and found the strength to speak out about her experiences. Now, Jessica shares her story as a domestic violence survivor to spread awareness and help others who may be going through similar struggles. She hopes that by highlighting the early signs of abuse, the importance of self-worth, and the red flags to look out for, she can prevent others from enduring what she did. Her advocacy work is driven by her belief that domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of their background or education, and that life after abuse can still be full of hope, healing, and beauty.Jessica's courage and resilience have transformed her into a voice for change, and through her journey, she has embraced the stronger, wiser version of herself. Her story is a reminder that healing is possible, and she is grateful for the opportunity to share her experiences in hopes of making a difference in the lives of others.___________________Music CreditsIntroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OGStingerScarlet Fire (Sting), Otis McDonald, YouTube Audio LibraryOutroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OG__________________My SGV Podcast:Website: www.mysgv.netNewsletter: Beyond the MicPatreon: MySGV Podcastinfo@sgvmasterkey.com
