In the wake of red tide and increased attention on sustainability efforts in the state, representative Margaret Good has responded. Project Stormwater, developed with owner of Stocking Savvy LLC, Sean Patton, will address concern over sustainable practices to protect Florida's ecosystem. "[It] will fundamentally change the way we develop in Florida," Patton says. "[It] is very environmentally friendly and fiscally low risk." On Monday, Feb. 11, Democratic representative Margaret Good made the announcement at the Landing Raquet Club, Sarasota. As of right now, the project is in its first steps. Phosphate mining could have longstanding negative consequences in the environment and ecosystem in Manasota--and its neighboring counties, Sarasota and Charlotte. An upcoming Hot Topics Luncheon with the League of Women Voters will addresss this issue. Glenn Compton, Chairman of Manasota 88, an environmental group that oversees phosphate mining in the area, spoke to the Critical Times on phosphate mining activity in the Bradenton area. While Florida is an ideal state for extracting phosphate, he believes that the long-term affects of mining in this area will be more costly in the long term. ASALH Manasota President James B. Stewart spoke to the Critical Times about their plans for Black History Month. This year's theme is black migration. Gavette has been a member of the Pine View School Pine View Association (PTO equivalent) for 10 years, a parent liaison, a homeroom parent and participant on Pine View’s Shared Decision-Making Team. She also has served on the Pine View School Advisory Council for 10 years. She sat down last week in the WSLR Studios to talk with Cathy Antunes on The Detail.
On July 26th, The Detail welcomed School Board Candidate Nick Guy to the WSLR studios. Guy is challenging incumbent Bridget Ziegler for the District 1 School Board Seat. The School Board race is nonpartisan and all voters are eligible to vote. As there are only two candidates running, this race will be determined in August. Election Day is August 28th.
On July 19th, The Detail welcomed School Board Candidate Jane Goodwin to the WSLR studios. Jane currently serves on the Sarasota School Board and is seeking re-election this year. She has three challengers. The primary election will be held on August 28th. If any candidate receives more that 50% of the vote in August they will win the seat on the School Board. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two vote-getters will appear on your ballot in November.
