This week, I chat with award-winning filmmakers MARY ROBERTSON and ARIANNA LAPENNE, the creative forces behind AMAZON PRIME VIDEO'S four-part documentary series, "Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story." Listen as Mary and Arianna explain how and why they investigated the rise and fall of this famously colorful but internally and privately troublesome company. As director, Arianna takes us inside her creative process of how she shaped the unique interview looks, which help drive the series and illustrate who these former employees really are. Plus, Mary discusses why her company - MAXINE PRODUCTIONS - likes these types of nostalgic documentaries that shine a light on certain issues that may not have been so obvious back then. Lastly, I discuss the effects of the horrendous wildfires that are destroying the Pacific Palisades and Altadena in the Los Angeles area. While I am safe, several of my former colleagues and friends have lost their homes. It is the most destructive and devastating fire in my 20 years of living in LA. Below are some links to GoFundMe pages for folks who have lost their homes as well as some other ways to donate to people or groups in need due to the wildfires. Anyone who went to school in the 80s and 90s recognizes the sparkly unicorns, day-glo dolphins and bejeweled kittens that adorned folders and pencil cases. Those memorable designs came from Lisa Frank, Inc., a brand that defined girlhood for a generation of Americans only to seemingly disappear overnight. Now, a new docuseries on Prime Video, Glitter & Greed: The Lisa Frank Story, goes behind the neon-hued world of Lisa Frank to reveal a much darker reality. The four-part docuseries uncovers a stranger-than-fiction tale that takes viewers into a hidden world lurking at the heart of the company that wasn't all puppies and rainbows. This week I chat with award-winning filmmakers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz to discuss their Emmy-nominated, critically acclaimed, and hugely popular MAX and Discovery ID docuseries - "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV," which sheds light on the troubling experiences of child actors in the entertainment industry, particularly those who worked on popular Nickelodeon shows produced by powerful showrunner Dan Schneider. Emma and Mary explain how they brought the project together and the keys to getting this very sensitive information from folks who were hesitant to talk. We also discuss why these types of projects are so important. The groundbreaking series set the internet ablaze with revelations of a toxic environment on set that included a voice coach getting arrested for sexually abusing one of the young stars. Dozens of former child stars have spoken out both during the series and since causing a reckoning in Hollywood and forcing the industry to make changes. Afterwards, I discuss the recent slew of insane announcements in entertainment, including a famous chicken restaurant entering the streaming wars and journalists declaring cable TV dead.
At one time, being “Slimed” on Nickelodeon was seen as the ultimate television rite of passage and a harmless bit of fun. But as “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” — Mary Robertson (“Framing Britney Spears”) and Emma Schwartz' (“Elon Musk's Crash Course”) devastating investigation of the warped culture at Nickelodeon in the 90s and 2000s — reveals, the atmosphere both on and off the set at Nickelodeon could be anything but harmless, fun, or safe. Joining Ken on the pod to discuss their Emmy-nominated, 5-part Investigation Discovery docuseries, Mary and Emma detail the rise and fall of Nickelodeon “Golden Boy” Dan Schneider. His oversight of some of the most successful shows on the network left some staffers, young actors and the actors' parents deeply upset or worse. In the case of Nickelodeon star Drake Bell, who comes forward for the first time to tell his story on camera in the series, he was sexually abused by dialogue coach Brian Peck. “Quiet on Set” pulls back the curtain on what went wrong at Nickelodeon and gives these young actors a chance to finally tell their side of the story. “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” is nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program. “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” is streaming on Discovery Plus, Hulu and Max Follow: @_rmaryr_ on Instagram and @mkrobertson on twitter/X @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter/X Hidden Gems: Mary: “To Be and to Have” Emma: “Jacinta” The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.
Kim Masters and Matt Belloni take a look at Jeff Skoll's decision to close Participant Media after 20 years. And the banter partners break down why two congress members sent a letter addressed to the heads of Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery about their in-development joint sports streamer affectionately nicknamed “Spulu.” Plus, Masters speaks to Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz about their investigative documentary series, Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The filmmakers talk about working with Business Insider contributor Kate Taylor to uncover years of inappropriate behavior that took place on the sets of Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider. They also share how Investigation Discovery went from ordering a three episode series to five episodes with more on the way as the cameras continue rolling.
Nickelodeon helped shape pop culture for decades. But a docuseries is exposing the toxic culture behind some of the iconic children's shows of the 90s and 2000s. As young viewers flocked to the channel for beloved programs, sexual abuse and harassment were rampant behind the scenes. Today's story is as fresh as you can get—it's the most recent story told at The Narrators. Last week we celebrated our 11th anniversary, outdoors in the parking lot of Buntport Theater. It was our first time performing anywhere near the theater in over a year and we were definitely a little rusty, but it felt great to be home. We want to take a moment to thank everyone who's supported the show over the years and the community that has grown around us, especially folks like Robert Rutherford and Mary Robertson, who brought the show to San Diego for a few years; my co-host Erin Rollman, who welcomed the show to its current home at Buntport; Sydney Crain, Karen Wachtel, Jessi Whitten, and Scott Carney, the patient and generous team of folks who help me keep the show and podcast going; and the countless others who've volunteered their time, energy, and personal stories to The Narrators over the years. And last but certainly not least, we'd like to thank Andrew Orvedahl for creating the show back in 2010. We can't think of any better way to commemorate the occasion than listening to a story from the master himself—today's story comes from comedian, actor, and game designer Andrew Orvedahl. Andrew told this true story just nine days ago, outdoors at Buntport Theater—the theme of the evening was “Confessions.” Special thanks to Knuckle Pups for today's outro music! Mary Robertson chose a story by Carmen Radley that she shared at our "Siblings" show in December 2015, and Robert Rutherford chose a story by Ellen K Graham that she shared at our "Two-Way Street" collaboration with Stratus Chamber Orchestra (formerly Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra). Per Robert's instructions, please check out this recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending AFTER listening to Ellen's story. It's worth your time, we promise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLhpkvQLDt0 Thank you for continuing to support the podcast and for coming out in droves every month to our live shows. We are still so in love with the power of the community that this show has built and we look forward to sharing another 100 episodes with you. Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 30: The theme for our October show, "Two Sides to Every Story", provided an opportunity for a little bit of experimentation. We thought it might be fun to explore the nature of truth in true storytelling by looking at an age old adage, that there are two sides to every story. We invited pairs of storytellers to tell their versions of a shared experience or story. We were hoping to dig into what makes a story a story, what we can learn by looking in between the gaps, etc. We sequestered the storytellers while their counterparts were telling their version, so that what the audience got was free from influence. It was pretty danged cool. Part 2 of the show features true stories from scholar/activist Mary Robertson and Narrators co-host Robert Rutherford. These stories were recorded at The Deer Pile on October 17th, 2013 by our good friends at The Denver Diatribe. The intro and outro music was produced and graciously provided by Sans Seruf, and you can find more slick beats for your earholes over at his bandcamp page. Learn more about your ad choices.
