Dr. Shannon Jung has a longtime interest in housing, both academically and personally. Academically he was interested enough to explore federal responsibility for housing people with lower incomes (who could not afford housing) and wrote a dissertation on that topic. He explored the moral tradition on housing policy highlighted by Jane Addams, Jacob Riis, Walter Rauschenbush, Wendell Berry, and James Cone. During his graduate years at Vanderbilt, the University there was actively engaged in demolishing lower-income housing. Personally Shannon volunteers at Turning Points in Bradenton, Florida. There he takes food stamp (SNAP) applications and often hears stories of people who have become homeless. Some of these stories are devastating and leave him bewildered as to how people can survive in the absence of shelter. Shannon is a pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has served churches in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Florida. He has taught at colleges and seminaries in Tennessee, Virginia, Minnesota. Iowa, and Missouri. He is a Team Leader in STREAM and does research on affordable housing in Manatee County. He was a refugee for a brief period and has continued his interest in the consequences of being homeless. Among several books, he wrote one on Building the Good Life for All: Transforming Income Inequality focused on successful work in the Manasota area.

Welcome to the February 2022 edition of “One Move at a Time,” the US Chess podcast in which Dan Lucas, the Senior Director of Strategic Communication, talks to people who are advancing the US Chess mission statement to “Empower people, enrich lives, and enhance communities through chess.” Our guests today represent the Manasota Chess Center in Sarasota, Florida.  Nicholas Lewis is the Executive Director and Grandmaster Pascal Charbaneau supports the coaching and advisory team. Nicholas is a graduate of Florida State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. He has held diverse professional roles since graduation, which included professional violinist and conductor, software developer, copyright coordinator, Wikipedia administrator, product lead for Minds.com and, most recently, founder and executive director of the Manasota Chess Center. Nicholas discovered chess during his freshman year at college, when he began playing with his college piano instructor,  which led to his piano lessons ending and morphing into weekly chess lessons instead. Nick later joined the college chess club and eventually became the president.  Under his leadership, the club held numerous tournaments, and grew from just eight to over 30 members. After graduation, Nicholas moved to Sarasota, Florida.  He worked in the technology field for three years, before reinvigorating his passion for playing and teaching chess. During this time, he began pursuing the launch of a local community chess center in Sarasota.  The result of his efforts culminated with the formation in June 2021 of the Manasota Chess Center.  Today the Manasota Chess Center has grown to more than 50 members, and it now delivers a wide range of chess programs and activities that include monthly US Chess tournaments, chess study groups, and private and group chess lessons from US Chess certified coaches. Additionally, the coaching/advisory team includes two GMs, Pascal Charbonneau and Akshayraj Kore. One of those GMs is joining us today. Pascal Charbonneau has twice been the Canadian Champion and he won over a dozen national championships as a junior. Pascal attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County on a scholarship when the chess team won the national championship four years in a row. He graduated in 2006 magna cum laude with a degree in financial economics and a secondary focus in Russian. After 2006, Pascal aimed his attention to the financial world. From 2008 to 2019 he worked at a multi-billion-dollar hedge fund as a key member of a small investment team.  He is currently senior portfolio manager with Vazirani Asset Management, an event-driven hedge fund.

My personal favorite Goodreads list Red, White & Royal Blue is on is Books That Make You Vomit With Joy!. Today’s Library Tidbit is about the history of the Native American population of the greater Tampa Bay Area. The first people to live in the area were Paleoamerican peoples. We don’t know much about them as we do later people groups as many of the artifacts that they would have left behind have either decayed with age, or are underwater. The Florida coast line being much different then than now. Much of what we know about the Paleoamerican people in Florida come from archaeologists doing underwater excavating in springs. The first people arrived in Florida during the time of the Pleistocene megafauna, think mammoths, giant tortoises, and bison antiquus. Paleoamericans used stone tools, including spear points, blades, scrapers, gouges, and more. Archaeologists have also discovered ivory, antler, shell, and wood tools, including eyed needles, pins, mortars and a throwing stick or boomerang. The closest site to Pinellas County that has been discovered and excavated is the Harney Flats site in Hillsborough County. The next distinct culture that we have archaeological records for is the Manasota culture. The Manasota are named for the modern names given to the area that they mostly lived in, Manatee and Sarasota. It’s important to keep in mind that most names for prehistoric peoples are names given to them by modern people, probably white people who have no familial connection to them. The most famous archaeological site for the Manasota in Pinellas County, at what is now the St Pete-Clearwater airport, is now named Yat Kitischee a Muskogee name that means “red people”. Muscogee is one of two officials languages of the Seminole Tribe. The original site was Moog Midden after the electronics plant that was nearby. The Manasota culture was fully adapted to coastal life. Archaeological sites have been found along estuaries and near bays for easy access to fish and shellfish, as well as along rivers for access to plants and land animals. There is evidence that they hunted and fished with spears and harpoons with bone and stone points. They may also have used bow and arrow for fishing and hunting as well, though there is less archaeological evidence to suggest that. Most of what we know about the Manasota culture revolves around their burial rites. Older Manasota burial plots are found near settlements and do not hold any grave goods or evidence of preferential treatment for the dead. This suggests a more egalitarian culture, however, we do not know this for certain. As time passed the Manasota adopted the mortuary practices of surrounding cultures, which included some ceremonial or religious burial practices. Around 200 ad there is evidence that the Manasota adopted the religious practices of Weedon Island. First the Manasota adopted the practice of burial mounds for their dead, but later they also adopted the practice of burying their dead with grave goods. We do not have evidence for what happened to the Manasota culture, but it is believed that they were assimilated into the Safety Harbor culture which appeared around 900 ad. The Safety Harbor culture is named from an archaeological site in Safety Harbor, which is in turn named for being a safe harbor from pirates in...

It's back to the Singing River...this time with a brood of kids in toe. Natalie Crist and Christopher Balzano talk about a day spent with their five kids at several sites along the Manatee looking for the voices of the Singing River. They also make a detour to Manasota where they teach the kids about grave markings and symbols at the Manasota Memorial Gardens. Some of the "mysterious" symbols they found can be viewed here: https://trippingonlegends.wordpress.com/2017/06/08/name-that-symbol/ Check out more about the legends and what they found without kids at: http://www.hipcast.com/podcast/HjxDb0ZQ http://triplegend.hipcast.com/deluge/...
