Seventy-nine Sarasota truckers voted this weekend whether to join the Teamsters union. We have the details. Then: The crowd was big, the tone was raucous, and the battle cry was "Home Rule!". Gretchen Cochran reports from Anna Maria Island. Then: A developer will be allowed to tear down a historic building in downtown Sarasota - if the city doesn't manage to move it. This story is from Ramon Lopez. Next: Just weeks after the three-way scandal, Bridget Ziegler flexed her political muscle again on the school board yesterday. Finally: The vice mayor of Sarasota made a last-gasp effort to stop a major zoning amendment that changes what can be built along major thoroughfares in the city. Ramon Lopez reports.

In a narrow 3-2 vote, the Sarasota City Commission passed a change to its comprehensive plan that incentivizes construction of workforce apartments along major thoroughfares. The dissenters argue we're giving too much to commercial developers, for too little affordable housing. Ramon Lopez reports. Then: The Florida Supreme Court issued not one, but two rulings about abortion on Monday. We interviewed the CEO of Planned Parenthood Southwest Florida.  Next: Sarasota city commissioners discussed - again - a developer's request to tear down a historical building in downtown, as Ramon Lopez reports. Finally: The Sarasota School Board had a 20-minute session yesterday. But that was preceded by three hours of public comment, plus a protest beforehand. This time, this was in part a response to Bridget Ziegler's suggestion to check the immigration status of students and their families.

Ambitious plans that could result in hundreds of new public housing apartments were before the City of Sarasota Planning Board last week. But it turned out that the one commission member who is from the neighborhood where the new construction could happen is opposed. Ramon Lopez reports. THEN: The City of Sarasota Commission voted to expand a short-term rental ordinance from the barrier islands to take it city-wide. Community members and commissioners actually hope the new regulation will slow the takeover of neighborhoods by vacation rentals.  NEXT: After Governor DeSantis suspended his presidential campaign, some lawmakers expected a change in priorities during the legislative session. However, two Democrats in the House say nothing is new. Chris Young with partner station WMNF talked to them. THEN: Today, the Florida Supreme Court heard arguments on whether or not an abortion amendment will be on the November ballot. Bridget Ziegler's tenure was not on the agenda of the school board yesterday evening, but the conservative activist certainly was on the mind of the public. Florence Fahringer followed the proceedings — and put her finger on something that was NOT on the agenda. Then: The Florida Legislature is into the second week of its 60-day session. The biggest teachers' union in Florida is backing a bill that would fund all-day pre-K daycare in low-income areas. The FEA also opposes a bill that would weaken child labor protections. We play excerpts from an interview by partner station WMNF with FEA President Andrew Spar. Next: Volunteers will head out across Sarasota and Manatee counties in late January to count the area's homeless. Catherine Hicks with the Community News Collaborative reports. Then: Martin Luther King Day celebrations staged a big post-pandemic comeback in Sarasota on Monday. This, despite climate challenges - both political and weather-wise. Finally: The "Through Women's Eyes" film festival is shaping up for its 25th return this March in Sarasota, and we get a preview, thanks to the Peace & Justice Report's interview with festival organizer E. Moms for Liberty is a Florida-based organization, with more than 300 chapters in 48 states. It claims to advocate for “parental rights at all levels of government.” 1 In reality, they push for banning children's books and literature, fight against diversity, inclusivity, LGBTQ children, and rail against sex education and the teaching of Black history. The Moms for Liberty cult-like following believes there's a widespread conspiracy in American schools to expose children to “woke “concepts about sexual orientation and gender identity that don't conform to their idea of traditional family values. Of course, they joined the Ron DeSantis' “Don't say gay” campaign. 2 But as it turned out, Moms for Liberty is right-wing education movement with a huge hypocrisy problem. Co-founder Bridget Ziegler, who's also a member of the Sarasota County School Board in Florida, and her husband Christian Ziegler have been caught in a sex scandal that threatens to end the organization. Moreover, Christian Ziegler who is also the chair of the Republican Party of Florida and a big Trump fan, was accused of rape. 3 1. David Waldman picked up a new Advent calendar to help keep track of his Hallmark movies this season. We'll make a secret Santanist out of him yet! Speaking of Christians, Florida Gop Chair Christian Ziegler, and his wife, Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler... like another woman very, very much, but Christian seems to also like raping, and being mean, which makes everyone sad and angry. The Zieglers and probably their (Formally?) really good friend don't like children reading about such things… and kissing… so they take kid's books away. Lucky for kids, a good Penguin will never let that happen! Moms for America Action invites Donald Trump to join them under the comforter. If women's attitudes don't shift, rural white hate-nerds will need to find someone other than “women” to have sex with. In war, those things guys get away with, they get away with a lot more. Rape has always been a weapon to choose from. Too bad Hamas exercised “the perfect deception”, and picked a bunch of anti-right hippies to attack, giving Israel no choice but to blow Palestine smithereens into much tinier pieces. At least this means job security for Israeli soldiers with autism. Estonia joins Finland in dropping an iron curtain on Russia. Georgie we hardly knew ye, but who'd want to? Sandra Day O'Connor will be in history textbooks also. Meanwhile, a Trump dictatorship is becoming increasingly inevitable. Who could ever stop him? Well, good governing would. Dick Durbin discovered that the rules aren't there just for Republicans. Republicans hate those kinds of rules! Scott Perry did not want anybody looking at his cellphone. In retrospect, that totally makes sense.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 83: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT:  I'd like to apologize for what MSNBC has become. Again. I'd like to apologize AGAIN for what MSNBC has become. They fired Mehdi Hasan yesterday. He hosted one hour a week on Sunday nights and it might have been the best hour on the network because while I don't know that I agreed with even MOST of what he said, he wasn't doctrinaire and he didn't simply repeat what Maddow says and he didn't pretend to be a moderate because being a Trump propagandist didn't work out for him like Scarborough does and he didn't struggle to read a prompter full of Democratic Party talking points like Joy Reid does and to my knowledge he never fell asleep on the air like Andrea Mitchell does nor cause the viewer to fall asleep like Hayes and O'Donnell do. I do NOT know for certain why they fired him, I do NOT know if he said something about the Middle East they did not like, I do not know if the timing was coincidental. Let's put it this way: they either fired him for his Middle East opinions DURING conflict in the Middle East OR they fired him for something else DURING conflict in the Middle East and thus made themselves look guilty of firing him for his Middle East opinions anyway. Just as important as the continuing asinine and ignorant conduct of the management of MSNBC and NBC and NBC News is the issue of personal integrity of the people at what is god help us the closest thing to a liberal news network in this country. MORE important than the FIRING of Mehdi Hasan, is the response from MSNBC's stars about the firing of Mehdi Hasan. Want to read what Maddow and O'Donnell and Hayes and Wagner and Reid and everybody else said about this:   Wanna read it again? The POINT of HAVING the money IS that you SHOULD say "F YOU" to somebody at least once in your life. Not like Musk did; saying it to people who for some reason don't want their ads next to antisemitic and Pizzagate posts. But in DEFENSE of something. FOR something. If there are three people at NBC – hell, three people in NEWS – three people in TELEVISION – who can at least get away with a loud pointed protest – hell, can get away with saying “If Mehdi Hasan goes or if Tiffany Cross goes or if we keep diluting our product down to badly rewritten Democratic Party press releases, we're on strike” – if there are THREE people in media – besides like Taylor Swift - who can say “We are standing on our principles” and will LIVE TO TELL ABOUT IT, it's Chris Hayes and Lawrence O'Donnell. Of course – you've gotta HAVE principles. ALSO the Judge Engoron Trump gag order is back in place and Trump is still endangering the judge, his wife, and now his son. And Politico says the editorial that provoked Trump to revive the self-own "I will kill ObamaCare" not only revivified the ISSUE; it revivified Biden's campaign. Emails went out within hours. Nancy Pelosi got on a press call Tuesday. Biden hit Trump on video Wednesday. Commercials are already running on the state level. And then the Wall Street Journal ran another editorial on ObamaCare… attacking… TRUMP. For his failure to repeal AND his failed response to their first editorial. Whereupon Trump replied by attacking… the Wall Street Journal by calling the paper quote “Globalist” and the Editorial Page a “mess.” The Editorial Page whose editorial about ObamaCare got him so excited that he again vowed to replace ObamaCare and thus revitalized the Biden campaign and I haven't fully diagrammed this bizarre confluence of events but I think the gist of it is: if Biden is re-elected we can thank… The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board? B-Block (31:46) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: House Judiciary subpoenas Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo and enrages GOP. Good. Wanna guess how many copies Marjorie Greene's book sold in its first week? You need only three digits. And Henry Kissinger is dead. Are we certain? (37:35) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Even The Daily Caller has fired Tucker Carlson. Lanah Burkhardt and book banning for fun and profit. And Three's Company: Florida GOP Chief accused of sexual battery by a woman who says she and he and his wife - who is the co-founder of Moms For Liberty - had a long-standing menage-a-trois polygamy thing going on. Oh so it's THAT kind of liberty! Moms for three-ways! This week we're talking about everyone's favorite “grassroots” organization, Moms for Liberty. Justin is breaking out the cork board to show you where it's all coming from. We also share our controversial takes on the Wikipedia redesign.    Readings https://web.archive.org/web/20230117220154/https://www.momsforliberty.org/news/moms-for-liberty-partners-with-brave-books-to-donate-thousands-of-books-to-schools/  https://bookriot.com/moms-for-libraries/ About the launch of Moms for Libraries. Among the titles in Brave Books's catalog are Elephants Are Not Birds, Little Lives Matter, and More Than Spots and Stripes — 100,000 copies of this anti-critical race theory book were given away on Martin Luther King Day this year. It's clear what the “values” in said books are. https://newrepublic.com/article/169946/moms-for-libraries-public-schoolsMoms for Libraries prompts supporters to purchase copies of books from a handful of small conservative publishers it's chosen, such as Heroes of Liberty, which released a book in December valorizing Elon Musk.  Also mentions Brave Books https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2022/10/moms-against-libraries/“rapid-onset gender dysphoria” mentioned in this article.  https://www.tampabay.com/opinion/2022/07/09/just-who-is-behind-moms-for-liberty-column/Funding sources for Moms for Liberty unclear.  Moms for Liberty incorporated as an Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(4) organization, a form that lends itself to dark money political shenanigans. People buy books from them to have them donated to teachers and students directly. Sales money goes back to Moms for Libraries to fund more donations (allegedly).  Donating directly to students rather than libraries.  Agenda as self-describedFocus on restrictions on “public school libraries” (very deliberate phrasing, always includes the public part). Probably to conflate school libraries with public libraries so they can censor those as well in the name of school aged children. Tend to avoid talking about public libraries when on the defensive. (“If N.C. statutes require parental consent for sex education, why are we freely allowing sexually explicit materials in our public school libraries and classrooms?”)  Probably also use Public School to differentiate from Charter Schools, home schooling Pushes for early literacy and funding of libraries (for the moment) Mixture of ideology. Wedging into liberal support until it shifts. TERF behavior.  Focus on transparency language (identical to Gov. DeSantis anti DEI order).  Most local chapter members believe these are legitimate grassroots organizations. May not have lasting power when the people funding it lose interest.  Fights over school boards are nothing new, the homeschooling movement has been infiltrating public school boards for decades. Will also attempt to divert funds to charter schools. Moms for DeSantis explicitly against public education by promoting Crimes of the Educators.

Ever since the pandemic saw school boards explode into shouting matches over mask mandates, nothing has been the same. And Florida has been the epicenter of some of those battles. Leading the charge is Bridget Ziegler, mother of three, and chair of the Sarasota school board. She is against the teaching of CRT and gender identity, but she is pro protecting the rights of parents. And Governor Ron DeSantis endorses her. Bloomberg spent several days with Ziegler, and over the course of three episodes we got to know her – and her opponents.  In chapter one of “The School Board Queen” we meet Ziegler and her family, and we learn her origin story. There were mean girls in high school. She didn't finish college. And it was a surprising suggestion from her husband that set her on the school board path. We also talk to a former school board member who was so put off by Ziegler's “shenanigans” that she left the Republican party and registered as a Democrat.  “The School Board Queen” is reported, produced and hosted by Kathleen Quillian and Samantha Storey. Bridget Ziegler is against the teaching of CRT and gender identity. She believes parents should have ultimate control over their children's education. In chapter two of “The School Board Queen” we explore where these stances come from. We hear from a Republican woman who fought against communism in her kids' schools in the 1950s. We hear some of the first instructional videos made for sex ed classes, including one on how to groom yourself and another on whether or not to go steady. Two historians, Michelle Nickerson and Natalia Mehlman Petrzela who studied the era, take us on a tour, drawing a through-line from the mothers of yesterday to Bridget Ziegler today.   “The School Board Queen” is reported, produced and hosted by Kathleen Quillian and Samantha Storey. In the final chapter of “The School Board Queen” we dig in with Bridget Ziegler. Her opponents have called her names – transphobic and racist. But she says she'll take “the arrows of being called whatever” for what she believes in. She's a champion of the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act – that's the so-called Don't Say Gay bill, which critics call unsupportive of the LGBTQ community. We want to know what it's like to be a student living with the bill, and we spend time with a trans teenager, an eleventh grader, who surprises us with their clear-eyed perspective. “The School Board Queen” is reported, produced and hosted by Kathleen Quillian and Samantha Storey. Nationwide, many first-time candidates won election to school boards. And in Florida, all six DeSantis-endorsed candidates on the November ballot won their school board elections. Is it discriminatory, or is it truly about protecting parental rights? Are we dealing with more government overreach, and what are the unforeseen consequences of this liberal shift? And who is it actually hurting from it?    Listen in for what Bridget Ziegler has to say.   KEY POINTS: - Is the liberal agenda trying to exploit young minds? - What is HB 1557? - Government overreach and emotional exploitation  - Where did the shift to pre-programming in K-12 begin? - Why HB 1557 is not necessarily an LGBTQ issue   QUOTABLES: “Education impacts every single person in your community, whether you have children or not, and whether you own business or real estate or have employees. Parental rights in Florida: Should they be stronger?

Many conservatives in Florida contend that parents should have a greater say in the education and care of their children. Schools have a role to play, they say, but should not be allowed to substitute their judgment for that of parents — even when children attempt to assert their own rights to privacy. Florida lawmakers have proposed a new section to state statute outlining the rights they believe parents should have enshrined in law, assuring that school districts and other governments cannot keep them from fully participating in the raising of their children. Sarasota County School Board member Bridget Ziegler, who helped write the legislation and stands among the most ardent supporters, speaks with reporter Jeff Solochek about the initiative and why she thinks parents need a stronger voice written into law.
