We dive into what stuck out, both good and bad.Plus, Maryland football left little doubt against Rutgers as they jumped out to a 21-3 lead before coming away with a 42-24 win. Welcome back to the Young Terps show, where we dive into the latest surrounding Maryland football and basketball.Head coach Kevin Willard saw his team get back on track against UMBC on Tuesday night, pulling out a 92-68 win as Maryland was able to empty the bench late. Jahmir Young led the way with 20 points and was one of four to finish in double figures, while Deshawn Harris-Smith was able to find success around the rim and Julian Reese notched his second double-double of the season. But it wasn't all pretty as Maryland's perimeter shooting remains a concern, shooting under 30% from deep in the win, but what stuck out about the win?Meanwhile, Maryland football wasn't able to pull out the win against Michigan, but they'll shift gears this upcoming weekend as they look to pull out their fourth win in five games against Rutgers with both teams entering the matchup 6-5. Welcome back for the Young Terps postgame show, where we break down what went right and wrong in Maryland's 31-24 loss to Michigan, and what it means for the rest of the season and program. “I'm also proud of the way our team fought. I'm not up here to celebrate a moral victory at all, but you know what, to have a breakthrough win, our team played the script to a tee except the finish. And to me, down 20 and we still had a chance to win, our team continued to fight. We knew that we would have to take their best. We withstood the onslaught early in the first half,” head coach Mike Locksley said postgame. “Going in at halftime, we knew that coming out and scoring early and getting a three and out to get us back in the game, and we were able to do it. When you play a champion like Michigan, you've got to understand, they won't give it to you and our guys need to continue to understand that we're going to have to go take it.” Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa accounted for all three turnovers in the loss, while it was Billy Edwards Jr. punching in all three touchdowns on the tush push. Maryland clawed back from an early 16-3 deficit and were able to find success through the air, while Beau Brade led the way on defensive with a team-high 11 tackles including ten solo. Brade and the defense held up in the second half, holding Michigan to just 95 yards and three-and-outs in half of their possessions in the second half. But late blunders, and a questionable call late, put the game into focus as Michigan escaped with the win and making the Terps winless against the Big Ten elite in 2023. What does that mean as the fans evaluate the success of the season? We give our takes and more.To catch up on previous Young Terps episodes, you can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podomatic and YouTube.
Welcome back to the latest episode of Young Terps where Ahmed Ghafir and Mason Viener take you back into the latest surrounding Maryland athletics. After dropping both games in the Asheville Tournament last weekend, Maryland will have a chance to reset the season just four games in with a marquee opponent up next on the schedule. Maryland and head coach Kevin Willard will take the Terps to Philly to take on 'Nova, who is coming off a humbling 76-72 loss to UPenn. Should Maryland expect the Wildcats to be fired up, but more importantly, will the Terps be fired up? We dive into the matchup as the Terps look to add a quality nonconference win to the NCAA Tournament resume. We switch over to football where head coach Mike Locksley will close out the home slate of year five with the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines coming to College Park. Maryland struggled two weeks prior against a stingy Penn State defense, but after coming off a bowl-clinching win versus Nebraska, the Terps will face another tough defense against a Wolverines defense that has star power both in the front seven and in the secondary. How will the Terps fare, and what needs to happen in order to find success?Plus, we close the show out by giving our betting takes for this weekend's game.Make sure to like, rate and subscribe to the podcast! To catch up on previous Young Terps episodes, you can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podomatic and YouTube.Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InsideBlackGold/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Insideblackgold, twitter.com/youngterp1Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/insideblackgold/Follow us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@insidetheblackandgold
Welcome back for the latest episode of Young Terps where we dive into a busy weekend for Maryland revenue sports. The weekend began and ended with Maryland basketball competing in the Asheville Tournament, where head coach Kevin Willard's squad was humbled on Friday then Sunday for the first two losses of the season. While the Terps now fall below .500 for the first time in the Willard era, the way the Terps lost was equally as concerning as finishing with 28 turnovers through the weekend. Three-point shooting on both ends of the court was the tale in Friday night's 64-61 loss against Davidson as a late Bobby Durkin three proved to be the difference. Maryland looked to turn the tide on Sunday after building a lead as many as 11 in the first half, but turnovers loomed large as the perimeter shooting gradually went cold, leading to a 66-63 loss that the Terps had to claw back from.Maryland will now look to get back to .500 in an early marquee matchup against Villanova next Friday night, but what was most concerning? Is patience needed or are there viable concerns? We shift over to football where the Terps did just enough to pull out a 13-10 win against Nebraska, the program's first win against the Huskers and first win of the season since September 30. It wasn't pretty, but the win also gives the Terps bowl eligibility for the third consecutive season, marking the first time that Maryland has done so since Ralph Friedgen accomplished the feat in 2006-08. We break down the win, what stuck out, and whether it's a late-season momentum changer or simply the sixth win on the season.
Welcome back for the latest episode of Young Terps as we dive into all the latest news surrounding a busy week for Maryland athletics for both revenue sports and on the recruiting trail. Maryland men's basketball kicked off the 2023-24 season against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday night as they cruised to a 68-53 win as DeShawn Harris-Smith and Julian Reese led the way. Harris-Smith made his presence felt early, especially on the defensive end, while Julian Reese was able to find consistent success around the rim though struggled from the free-throw line. Maryland will now shift its attention to the Asheville Tournament this weekend, first taking on Davidson on Friday night. What were the concerns and highlights in Tuesday's win, and what can Maryland prove this weekend? We also hit the recruiting trail with five-star Derik Queen expected to be in the final days of his recruitment as Maryland fans anxiously await his decision, looking to add a longtime priority to its 2024 class. So, what to make with everything with the early signing period now officially open? Plus, Maryland suffered a second decommitment in the trenches this cycle, but there could be good news coming with another target on the cusp of a decision. We close out the show hitting on Maryland football heading to Lincoln to take on Nebraska in a game the Terps remain the betting favorite for. Nebraska enters Saturday with one of the top run offenses and defenses in the country, and after the Terps struggled to run the ball against Penn State, what can we expect this weekend? We give our predictions, what it'll take for the Terps to pull out the win and share our betting takes. Welcome back for the latest episode of the Young Terps podcast as we analyze Maryland's latest humbling loss to Penn State as four turnovers told the tale in a 51-15 loss."They came in here and kicked our butts and we got outplayed and outcoached," head coach Mike Locksley said following the loss. "We didn't make plays in any of the three phases that we're going to need to make consistently."So, what went so wrong for Maryland football on Saturday afternoon? Despite quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa starting the game with 17 consecutive completions, the veteran quarterback accounted for two of Maryland's four turnovers in the loss, while the running backs accounted for -6 yards on seven attempts. Of course, Penn State's front seven did what many expected them to do as they registered six tackles and 12 tackles for loss for -63 yards. Was Maryland that much worse of a team on Saturday?" You give some credit to Penn State's front. They are as advertised, a good front, but I don't think they're 51-15 better than us. And so to me, that's where I don't think we play to our potential. And when we don't play to your potential, the first place you look is at me and I have no problem with owning that," Locksley added. With yet another humbling loss, we take a look at what it means for not just the outlook of the remainder of Maryland's 2023 season, but what it also means fan support as the Terps put the finishing touches on year five of the Mike Locksley era.To catch up on previous Young Terps episodes, you can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podomatic and YouTube.
Welcome back to the latest episode of Young Terps, where we preview Maryland football's next game against ninth-ranked Penn State. What should the Terps watch out for? How do they stack up on both sides of the ball? We take a dive into the match. Maryland also suffered its third decommitment of the cycle, but was it a true decommit? We dish the scoop. Plus, the latest on five-star Derik Queen with his recruitment winding down.
Welcome back to the latest episode of Young Terps, where we break down what went wrong in Maryland's 33-27 loss at Northwestern and what it means.Maryland was able to start hot on both sides of the ball, with the offense opening the game with a touchdown while the defense registered a pair of sacks to force an early punt. But Northwestern found its groove and four consecutive scoring possessions put Maryland in an early deficit. Drops loomed large in Saturday's loss, while the unforced, post-play defensive penalties reemerged as Northwestern controlled the game from seemingly start to finish.Maryland was able to generate one final opportunity with just over three minutes remaining, but an overthrow led to an easy Northwestern interception, sealing the Terps' defeat and pushing them to 5-3 (2-3).For a Maryland team coming out of the bye, what went so wrong for Maryland football against what was likely the best chance at a sixth win? And after having two weeks to turn the page off two consecutive losses, how does a loss like Saturday happen? Is Maryland getting to six wins now a genuine concern? It won't get any easier with Maryland set to face its second top-ten opponent of the season with Penn State headed to College Park next weekend, but how damaging was Saturday's loss for fan support? We break down all the heartbreak as we critique the 'standard' in College Park.To catch up on previous Young Terps episodes, you can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podomatic and YouTube.
