In this episode of Revolutionize Your Retirement, host Dori Mintzer talks with Helen Hirsh Spence, founder of Top 60 Over 60, about reframing aging in the 21st century and confronting both external and internalized ageism. Helen shares her own story of becoming a social entrepreneur in her late 60s after a 35-year leadership career in education, and how subtle experiences of invisibility and lowered expectations led her to recognize ageism in herself and in the culture around her.The conversation dives into what ageism looks and sounds like, everyday comments, workplace nudges to retire, birthday-card humor, and “senior moment” jokes, and why these messages quietly erode confidence, opportunity, and health. Helen introduces the idea of “longevity literacy” and a “longevity mindset,” noting that we now live 20–30 years longer than previous generations and need a new life map beyond the old “learn–earn–retire” model. She and Dori discuss how people in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond can pivot, re-skill, and design non-linear lives that include multiple purposes and periodic reinvention.Helen also talks about her work with individuals and organizations: helping older adults surface purpose, strengths, and an “entrepreneurial mindset,” and helping employers become age-ready by recognizing the value of older workers' experience and institutional knowledge. She emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, stepping out of one's comfort zone, building multi-generational connections, and cultivating supportive networks that challenge limiting beliefs about aging.About the Guest – Helen Hirsh SpenceHelen Hirsh Spence is a trailblazing advocate for longevity literacy and a leading voice in the fight against ageism. She is the founder of Top 60 Over 60, a niche consultancy and thought-leadership platform that challenges outdated stereotypes about aging and showcases the value of older adults in today's workforce and society. Before launching her social enterprise in her late 60s, Helen spent more than 35 years as a senior leader in public and private education, including roles as a language teacher, secondary school principal, founding executive of the Ontario Principals' Council, and head of an all-girls school in Ottawa. A lifelong learner and traveler, she has done volunteer advisory work in Honduras, Bolivia, the Canadian Arctic, India, and Bhutan, and even climbed Kilimanjaro at 58.Key Topics We CoverLongevity literacy and the new map of life: living 20–30 years longer and outgrowing the learn–earn–retire model.Longevity mindset: reframing expectations, health span, and the opportunities of extra decades.Purpose in later life: self-awareness, revisiting values, multiple evolving purposes, and getting out of your comfort zone. The entrepreneurial mindset (for business or life): creativity, spotting opportunity, re-skilling, and embracing change.Connect with Helen Hirsh SpenceWebsite & Resources: Top 60 Over 60 – articles, talks, media, and program information.LinkedIn: Age Sense - Fresh perspectives & insights on shifting demographics, longevity & age inclusivity, reflectionsWhat to do next: Click to grab our free guide, 10 Key Issues to Consider as You Explore Your Retirement Transition Please leave a review at Apple Podcasts. Evan opens up about a very real debate at home over doing the show from the house, then the conversation takes a hard left into a viral graphic that has people claiming the NFL “told us” back in September it would be Drake Maye vs Sam Darnold. The guys laugh through the conspiracy, point out the other names hidden in the image, and then get right back into the AFC Championship aftermath as callers rip Sean Payton's decision-making and the play call that helped sink Denver. The segment also hits the weather angle, how the Patriots approached the second half, and whether the “cover up” sounded worse than the original decision. Plus, Spence pops in with a prediction, more calls roll in, and the hour tees up Jets and Giants coordinator news and a strange Mets producer story.
If you've been doing all the right things—working out, eating better, praying more—but still feel stuck in your body, your mindset, or your faith… this episode may explain why. In this powerful and deeply honest conversation, Shaela sits down with licensed professional counselor and life coach Shelley Spence to unpack the connection between spiritual freedom and physical health—and why so many Christian women stay trapped in cycles of guilt, control, perfectionism, and shame when it comes to their bodies. This episode goes far beyond surface-level fitness or nutrition advice. It explores what it really means to walk unhindered with God—and how unaddressed spiritual bondage often shows up as body image struggles, emotional eating, burnout, program hopping, and frustration with health results. In this episode, you'll hear: Why you don't have to believe every thought you think—and how to test thoughts against Scripture What spiritual freedom actually looks like (and why it's not just “trying harder”) How shame, fear, and hidden beliefs can block progress in weight loss, fitness, and body confidence Why healing happens in layers, not overnight—and why plateaus aren't failures The surprising connection between body image, identity in Christ, and midlife changes How Christian women unintentionally place their worth in their appearance, discipline, or consistency Why striving for control in health often leads to more exhaustion—not results How to gently move toward freedom if food, wine, scrolling, or distractions have become coping tools The biblical truth that God's grace is sufficient, even when your body feels weak or uncooperative Shelley also shares her own journey through spiritual freedom using the Keys to Freedom Bible study, how the Lord revealed hidden areas of “playing small,” and what it means to reclaim surrendered ground—spiritually and physically. This conversation is for the Christian woman who: Feels tired of trying to “fix” her body Is overwhelmed by health advice but still not seeing results Wants freedom from guilt, legalism, and perfectionism Desires health that honors God—not idolizes discipline Is ready to stop striving and start walking in alignment with the Holy Spirit If you've been chasing change in your body but ignoring what's happening in your spirit, this episode will feel like a deep exhale. Jack is joined by Goal.com's Sean Walsh to discuss Tottenham's brilliant win over Borussia Dortmund. We react to a refreshing approach and performance, trying to make sense of it within the context of an otherwise awful season, though nobody should be complaining about the result right now. We analyse the tactical shift that saw Djed Spence utilised in an advanced role, praising his partnership with Destiny Udogie on the left and asking if this is a blueprint we will see more of going forward. The pressure on Thomas Frank was immense coming into this, could this be the springboard for a genuine turnaround, or is the writing already on the wall regardless? Sean then answers your questions, covering the questionable transfer links to two underwhelming West Ham players, and a deep dive into Tottenham's injury record which sparks a wider conversation about whether football is in danger of eating itself by pushing players' bodies to the brink. Donate to Legend On The Bench now and help save people from suicide: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/legend-on-the-bench We somehow turned a Spurs pod into sinkhole chat, canal-boat paranoia, and then a genuinely weird, rare thing: feeling a bit of pride after losing to Liverpool. Two red cards, a ref performance that made no sense, and yet the stadium noise actually lifted us. We get into Romero's chaos, Spence looking class, Richarlison coming on like a man possessed, and whether the players are actually buying what Frank's selling. Plus a quick word on the To Talk Is To Do campaign and why it matters this time of year. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
